What is unschooling?

Have you ever described 'red' to a person who is color blind? Sometimes, trying to define unschooling is like trying to define red. Ask thirty unschoolers to define the word red and you'll get thirty shades of red. They'll all be red, but they'll all be different.

This discussion list is monitored and will be moderated for spam. We encourage, but don't enforce, civility, as we believe unschooling is best illustrated through modeling, not the school-based enforcement of a mediator/teacher.

This list is about meeting people where they are in their journey.

It's a place where you can explore unschooling without being shouted down for asking questions, having doubts, or working through your fears. It's a place where it's okay to disagree, and it's a place where you can try out stuff, and see what works best for you and yours.

We've got people who are passionate radical unschoolers, and people who identify more as relaxed or eclectic, but I think we strive to embrace all the different colours of 'red.'

It's a list where being a member puts you on equal footing to ask or answer -- where no one is "trapdoor'd" or moderated into silence for holding an opposing view (Though you should expect to hear vigorous and passionate alternative viewpoints).

This freedom means that nearly everything in the world is on topic -- but modeling unschooling is much more important than narrowing the field of what might be "about unschooling." (Who has time to be the arbiter of what is or isn't unschooling? I sure have no inclination in being some unschooling purist gatekeeper -- the world is too rich and interesting (and this list is too rich and interesting) to be narrowed to one person's interest or thoughts on what does or doesn't constitute unschooling).
