In 2007 the United Lutheran Mission Association recommended seeking
candidates for a Missionary at Large to its member congregations. The
ULMA is not a church or synod, and therefore cannot call a pastor.
Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Decatur, Illinois, voted to call a pastor
to function as ULMA's Missionary at Large. In February of that year
we issued a press release announcing the decision. In early 2008 Rev.
James Shaw accepted the call to Pilgrim. After his installation he
was immediately sent to serve Agnus Dei Lutheran Church in
Fredericksburg, Virginia. This mission had only started a few months
before.

We have been blessed with inquiries from concerned laity and pastors
around the world. Our goal is to enable concerned laymen and pastors
to come together in a confessional, traditional Lutheran
congregation. Missions are our goal. With God's help and the
dedicated people from our member and mission congregations, we look
forward to the task.

This month upon the recommendation of the ULMA, the voters at
Pilgrim – Decatur approved the calling of a second Missionary at
Large. The ULMA already has a mission startup in progress on the West
Coast where this man may be sent.
