Now this is why it is a bad thing for cultural materials to be stored at any one
place. We should have learned from the fire of the Alexandria Library, where
countless documents were lost to the ages. Pompii is another example, the one
location with its great library was wiped out when Vesuvius blew. How many
times are we going to repeat the same mistakes? If the collection were more
widely spread, then no one event destroys the totality of what has been
preserved. Now what happens if someone INTENTIONALLY destroys a collection
because it doesn't support their views, much like the Taliban did in
Afganistan? Folks, we need to wake up to the fact that these things will happen
again and again. This is why we need to keep the private collector involved in
holding on to our history. Enough said.
