Dear Bill,

I know why you lost the Newts. O.k. Ready? Newts are freshwater critters,
and all you fed them was saltwater foods. The acids in them are really
diffrent. Newts can eat feeder guppies....and freshwater ghost shrimps. They
can't eat saltwater foods a lot and stay alive. Freshwater daphnia
cultures....they can snack on those.

I hope this helps you! By the way...what sort of tank set up do you have for
them?

Carol :)

Hi,
My name is Bill. I'm relatively new to raising Koi. I saw this
invitation to join from another list. We have two problems at the
present time. The first is Newts, the second is Koi. We have Newts in
a 20 gallon aquarium inside the house and Koi in a 2000 gallon outdoor
pond. The Newts are recent pets and we have lost like 4 out of 6. They
just seem to die without symptoms (visual). One day they're alive and
well, the next they're upside down and dead. They stink when I take
them out. Anyone able to help? They're diet was fresh and frozen brine
shrimp.

The Koi are also recent introductions in the pond which has had water
and been circulating through the filter since October and with feeder
Goldfish. I put in 20 Koi, the cat caught one the first night,, four
others have died. The dead ones look like they lost a few scales and
one's head was shrunken inward. I notice now that several have white
blisters or sores (wht. and red). The Fishery I bought them at sold me
some Malachite Green Formulin. The label says for treating Gill Flukes
and Fungus. The owner said to treat with one cup three times, once
every two days. And not to feed them while they're sick and being
treated. He also mentioned to change out 20% of the water. Any
suggestions out there? I hate to lose any more of these beautiful pets.

Greetings!

Thank you Stanley for inviting me! :) I DO work with freshwater fish,
infact...that is how I got started. ( Bettas, the betta fish did it.) However,
when I started collage ( years ago now) I had to stop breeding my bettas, and
just kept the guppies. The mollies came and went, and are back again...but the
guppies have always stayed.

I have several strains, and would most love to know about other list members
breeding Geissen or also called Ribbon guppies. How are yours doing, what
colors, ect. I know that Singapore is a large breeding ground for guppies. Here,
in the U.S....there are not so many breeders to talk about guppies with.

Again, thank you for inviting me Stanley!

Thanks, Stanley, for your welcome to the list.

I am a 60 year old American widow, grown children and 8 grandchildren. I
have been interested in fish for a long time.

my earliest remembrances are watching my mother's fish tank when I was a
small child. she had purchased a 20 gallon tank stocked with livebearers
and a hoplo catfish when she got married. that catfish and the descendants
of the livebearers were still alive when I reached my early teens.

My uncle ran three pet shops in the Bridgeport, Connecticut area, and my
brother and I raised all the livebearers he sold in his store. we had
several large "ponds" outside in summer, and into tanks in the fall to
winter over.

didn't try my first egg layers until I managed to breed some Angelfish, at
about age 27.

my interests now are breeding angelfish, especially fascinated by the
genetics and creating new varieties. I'd also like to breed the Hoplo
catfish. (Hoplosternum thoracatum) anyone bred them?

recently I bought seven tiny ones, they were about 1 1/2 inches long. Now
the biggest is almost four inches.

I have a 55 gallon show tank in the living room, seven fifteen gallon tanks
for angel breeders in my upstairs bathroom, and about 500 gallons in fry
tanks in the basement fishroom.

I recently introduced a virus into a 55 gallon tank of angelfish by adding four
nice little Koi angels, from Singapore.

I had never gotten bad fish from this dealer, and did not quarantine them.

Now, I have lost three of the four new fish, plus eight of the dozen nice veil
and superveil youngsters, almost breeding age, that I had been raising for the
last six months.

what I need to know is

    1. how long do I need to wait after the last fish dies until the water is
safe for new fish. I do 30-50% water changes weekly, my water is around 7.4 pH
and moderately soft.
     2. are the fish that survived a danger to other fish if put in another
tank? There are four adult breeders and several of the younger ones are also
starting to sort out sexes, and I want to pair them up with fish in other tanks.
     3. is there any cure for this stuff? I have one fish showing signs of
illness that I'd really like to save. chief symptoms are loss of appetite,
listless, breathing about twice as fast as normal, and dead in two or three
days.

Hey there weifeng!

Wow! PIRANHAS, huh?

Well, in S'pore you first need to obtain a license from PPD before you
can even dream of buying them. Of course, that's if you play by the
rules......

If not, then yes, they are not out of reach- just darn expensive for
each fish. Thing is, you know these angels should be kept as a shoal.

Tell you what, you tell us what you already know, or what you think you
know, then let UniQuaria fill you in, ok?

Hi everybody,
I just changed over from saltwater to freshwater. I've got a 180 tank with
two fuvals, undergravel filter, four 30 watt strip florescent lights. Did
this in December. I lost my Discus a few days ago as I changed aquariums,
still have a 180 but its a "granite" type paint now <just lQQks better to me>
I am very interested in raising/breeding "Leaf Fish" any and all help would
be appreciated. Any ideas on books or do you have knowledge on them? Thanking
all.

2. diet constitutes
3. regularity of water change/ and your practises
4. filtration
5. are guppies alone? Any friends in same tank? Is mom & dad around?
6. water conditioning. Any at all?

Hey Beng Teck,

Firstly, you have been receiving messages from Mr. Tan K.T.- or Tan Kok
Tong. This is my father's account, I use it 'coz it's faster than my
Yahoo! account. Well, it's me- Stanley Tan.

Secondly, UniQuaria just started 4 days ago. To date I have 21

group in the same league, and some of them have been around for eons!
That is to say- Beng Teck, you are part of the fastest growing
Freshwater Aquaria discussion group just now! I hope you are not taken
aback or disappointed..... Let me explain.

I found www.onelist.com on 13 Apr 99. There were already 162 existing
hgroups, some of which have been around since early last year. While the
biggest of them is 167, the smallest is 2(yes, I went through all of
them)! The average works out to be 25. We are 21 after 4 days, Beng
Teck. I hope you'd give us a chance. You'll also notice that I make it a
point try and answer ALL your messages, I believe it's my responsibility
to make sure All of you get your answers. Even if I can't help you
directly, I'll try and direct you somewhere esle.

That's what I started UniQuaria for.... I was very dissatified with
numerous sites I found- half- dead, uninformative, etc.
So I started UniQuaria with the intention of matching and connecting as
many Freshwater Aquaria enthusiasts, to share their experiences and
problems!!! :)

I have designs for UniQuaria to be really BIG! I have submitted our
UniQuaria site to 11 search engines. I have extended invitations to
other discussion groups to join us. I have made UniQuaria cards to be
distributed at our local shops. I advertised on Classifiedadds!

Do you get where I'm coming from?

I want us all to enjoy the company of other fellow hobbyists, but I
can't do this alone. I NEED All of you to participate. Yes, you too Beng
Teck. I can see that you have many years of experience behind you and
you'd be a great help to the 'younger' ones out there. And as our
network extends (definitely), you'll meet others who can help you with
your problems, too!

I have told you a lot, I'd like to know how you feel about it, Beng
Teck. And all the other UniQuaria members- you read it all.. Any
thoughts?

I'd like to know if I have your support guys & gals,

At Your Service,

Greetings!

I have been a fishkeeper since I caught my first tadpole thinking it was a fish.
I currently own three tanks; a small(under 3ft) marine tank in the office, a
3ft planted tank & a 4ft freshwater tank with ranchus.

I have read a little on breeding ranchus and it appears to be an uphill task. If
there's anyone out there who is willing to share experiences regarding this,
I would
be most grateful.

Thanks in advance.

Stanley,
Since I subscribed to this list on Friday, I received no messages other than my
correspondences with Tong Tan. Just wonder how active is this group ? how
many members are there? How long has this group been set up ?
Appreciate if you could enlighten me....... thanks.

Tong Tan:
I have been keeping fish as a hobby for approx. 15 years now. It started with
one
small 1-1/2" tank given by a friend. Soon the number of tanks growth rapidy
especially
when I was into breeding of discus five-six years ago. FYI, I have given away
all
my discus collection two years ago after having more than 1000 fries and ran out
of
tanks.

The two Arowanas - a 1.5 grade Red and a red-tail gold, were with me for more
than
ten years, grew from 4 inches to present size of 2 ft. I have to gav\ie them
away
because of two reasons : my twin 4X2x1.5 tanks are getting too small for them
and
the stand for the tanks is corroded. I gave them to a friend who has a big pond
that keep large Arowana. In return, he may give a small Arowana to keep me
company.

As for the planted tank, you can find a lot of reference materials on some web
site
and
books. Most inportant points of setting up a good planted tanks includes :
     1. Good planning - determine the size of your tank(s), how you want it to
look
                 like etc.
     2. Prepare to spend money - some basic accessories for plant tank are
quite
costly, you will need to have a CO2 tank, diffuser, strong
lighting,
cooling fan (as alternative to expensive chiller), good filter,
silica sand
                 gravel etc.
     3. Selection of plants - do not make the same mistakes like most of the
newcomer,
just plant in any plants they can find. Fast growing plant
tends
to
over grow the slow growing plant. some plants that grow tall
should
be placed
at the back and shorter plan at the front , color matching etc..
etc.
     4. Spend times in maintaining - removing death plant, treating algae
problems etc.
     5. Prepare for a lot of disappointment and set back.

However, don't let all these discourage you from having the planted tank. The
satisfaction after you have finally setup a beautiful tank is worth every
efforts
you put in.

This is just my personal experience and I am sure there are many members out
there
that
can share their experiences with you.

Hey Beng Teck,

Wow! You've got a massive collection of fish- and they sound good too!

btw, what kind of arowana did you give away? :)

Also, could you introduce me to the basics of planted tanks? I've heard
a lot of hearsay but nothing concrete or conclusive.... :)

Keep yakking!

Stanley.

Hi, Mark!!!

Welcome to UniQuaria!!

I see you have a silver arowana to sell... Is it the wild species, with
a pointed, tapered tail... or is it the hybrid species with the fanned
tail?

If it is pointed tail, then sorry to break this to you but the price is
a bit too high. If it is the hybrd fan tail species, than the price is
right.

I noticed your add in Classified- Don't worry, you should be able to
find buyers soon. I just sold my own silver pointed tail arowana 2 weeks
ago for S$40!

BTW, what fish do you keep, now? :)

Keep chatting!

Stanley.
