Don't look now but 2009 is almost over. And that means the 00s are over too. '09 was definitely a fun one for UUCA 2030s people, and I'm putting together a photo album that I'll get printed and have at the 2030s welcome table. We'll arrange the photos in semi-chronological order so it will allow us to sort of flip through and highlight a lot of the events we participate in throughout the year and help start conversations and jog memories.
I'm using Pixable.com to do this because it lets me directly import images from Facebook and then they will print and ship the album for about 10 bucks.
Here's what I'd like from you:
If you have any fun / funny pics from any of the various social events or church events that you think would be great additions to the 2009 album, just send me the link of the image. If it's a public image and I'm your friend in FB, then the link to the image will be fine, that way I can import it with Pixable.
I already have lots of pics from the recent Habitat for Humanity service day, the beach trip, the fourth-of-July party, the JAKD birthday party at Stone Mountain, Brian's birthday dinner, baseball games, kayaking, tubing, Halloween (of course), etc.
I don't have any from Singles Awareness Day, any of Tony's parties or from the talent night if there are any out there.
Note: we're also updating a couple of the photo frames with more recent photos of current "regulars" -- (so if for some reason you absolutely don't want a photo of you there, let me know, and I'll be sure to select the best one of you I can find from the Halloween Party :-D )
Subject: '91 Volvo 740 for $850--spread the word for us!
White '91 Volvo 740 for sale in Kirkwood neighborhood of Atlanta. Very reliable, runs great. Selling well under KBB for $850 firm. No accidents except someone lightly side-swiping it once when it was parked. 291k miles, but the Volvo mechanic told me last year that he expected it to go at least 100k more miles. (Volvos do seem to run forever if you take care of them.) 18 mpg city/24 hwy. Dan has kept nearly all, if not all, of the maintenance records over the years, so those are available. Oil's been changed every 3k miles, tires rotated appropriately, etc. Car passed emissions in September. Clean interior. Does have holes in the leather in the driver's seat and visible wear in the other seats. Paint job in good shape---no rust. Has a nice Sony stereo with an mp3 player/iPod plug in addition to a cd player and radio.
We had planned to drive it several more years, but we are receiving another car as a gift, and we are a one-car family.
Please pass the word; I have more photos and info for anyone who's interested.
We have many types of losses and grief. If you are looking for support or a space to share, UUCA now has a grief group supported by Lay Ministers. This group will be meeting in the Chapel on Tuesday, December 15th from 7:00-8:30PM.
Starting in January the group will be meeting the 2nd Thursday of each month.
As a reminder, I am inviting any and all this Friday (December 11) to Uncle Julio's Casa Grande on Peachtree (just North of the I-85 overpass and the Border's), in honor of my 40th birthday. I will be there no later than 6:15 to get us on the waiting list for a table and to have a margarita (or two) with whomoever will join me. We should be seated around 7:00.
E-mail me if you are coming for dinner or would just like to stop by for drinks during the 6:00 hour. If you already sent me an e-mail saying you'll be there, I've got you on the list already.
Thanks to Shabnam for asking about this and to Chris for forwarding the poem!
I was wondering about this also!!

Never become less a part of our experience.
How can I say it?
The way to get over a life is to die,
Short of that, you move with it,
let the pain be pain,
not in the hope that it will vanish
but in the faith that it will fit in,
find its place in the shape of things,
and be then not any less pain
but true to form.
Because anything natural has an

And a life is as natural as a leaf.
That’s what we’re looking for:

I am looking for seasonal work over the holidays once my final exams are over next week. Does anyone have any advice or ideas about where to look? I do not at all mind a more labor intensive job that requires heavy lifting, or catering etc. Any information at all would be much appreciated! I am willing to work hard, if only for a few weeks.
Hello from Moscow. Shortly after leaving my laptop out of my sight for a few hours, it appears that my computer has been wiped clean. None of my files are available. Hopefully this is not actually the case. Now, I will admit that the computer is a few years old and has some issues, and the same is true of its primary user. I'm sure any number of things could be going on, so the KGB might not completely be to blame.
When I boot up, the following User Environment messages appear:
Windows cannot load the locally stored profile. Possible causes of this error include insufficient security rights or a corrupt local profile. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator.
Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off.
The computer works, but My Documents is empty. I would be most grateful for any suggestions to try, and promise to bring back a bottle of vodka for anyone who can help me retrieve today's spreadsheets at the very least.
Hi,
Last year Kira posted about this free concert that the Morehouse and Spelman
choruses put on every year. It was a fabulous concert and I'd like to go again
this year, but just found out it's this weekend! There are Saturday and Sunday
shows at 8pm, Sat in the King Chapel and Sunday in the Sisters Chapel (both on
campus.) If you're interested, call my cell and maybe we can arrange a carpool.
Don't email me back because my home internet connection is out right now. Phone
is (202) 744 8219.
I don't remember when Kira's Atlanta Sacred Chorale is doing their xmas concert
(next weekend maybe?? need to check...), but if anyone's interested in that I'd
be up for it as well!

Office Hours: I am in the office Mondays through Thursdays. Please allow me one or two business days to respond to your email. Thanks!
I need some brilliant guidance on something for work...and I instinctively knew this was the crew for the job.
I'm working on a proposal for a public health marketing initiative--it's a good thing. I'm trying to find out everything I can about the popular websites visited by 14-24 year olds. If you have siblings, friends, cousins, nieces/nephews, pen pals, etc. that fall into that demographic, shoot me an email and tell me whatever you know about where they hang out online. This could be anything-music sites, blogs, lifestyle/celebs, whatever. Anything and everything that's popular.
I'm also looking for the same info targeted to 14-24 year old African American and Hispanic women.
Thanks in advance for the help. Put it on my tab :)
Please reply to Melora Furman at mlfurman2@... if you're interested. Thanks!
UUCA's annual Moravian Love Feast Christmas Service is one of its most cherished traditions. But it can't happen without help from people like you. Would you like to volunteer this year to be a server, clean-up crew member, cookie-provider, or reception host/ess? It is a good way to give back to UUCA, meet some new people, and enjoy a lovely service, all on the same night! AND (drum roll) volunteers are not required to purchase tickets -- what could be better than that?
This year, the Moravian will be held on Thursday, December 10, at 7:30 P.M., and will feature the Peachtree Brass, the much-anticipated O Holy Night solo, and the candle-lit Moravian Star Song.
Our greatest need at this point is for servers, who make sure that the feast part of the Feast happens: dressed in black and white with aprons, they distribute Moravian buns and mocha to those attending the service. Servers need to gather in the Social Hall at 6:30 P.M. Note that servers need to be able to climb stairs with somewhat cumbersome baskets and beverage trays, so if you don't feel up to that, volunteer instead to:
- bring cookies for the reception, - host/ess the reception (re-fill punch glasses, re-fill cookie trays) - clean up (fill & empty dishwasher, put away dishes, wipe surfaces, take out trash)
If any of these much-needed volunteer opportunities appeal to you, please contact Melora Furman at mlfurman@... or (678)591-7761, and specify the volunteer task that you'd like to do. Additional details will follow, including the complete set of server instructions for those of you who volunteer to be servers.

Here's one interesting Tid-Bit, at least for we commoners :)
Pronouncing Thoreau
The author's name is commonly
pronounced "thur-ROW," but his name actually sounds like the word
"thorough," with the accent on the first syllable. Upon meeting
Thoreau, philosopher and writer Bronson Alcott wrote in his journal the
phonetic pronunciation "thorough." And in a letter dated after
Thoreau's death, his Aunt Maria wrote to a friend that she had suffered
both pronunciations through her life, but that their name is pronounced
"thorough."
