International cyclo-cross comes to Washington DC!

The Fitness Concepts Capital ‘Cross Classic, an internationally sanctioned cyclo-cross race, will take over Lake Fairfax Park in Reston, Virginia on Sunday, December 5th. Cyclo-cross racing has risen to a new level in the mid-Atlantic with record breaking attendance levels at the ‘Verge Mid-Atlantic Cyclo-cross Championship Series’, and what could be a better mighty MAC finale and travel destination than in our nation’s capital!  This will be the last east coast UCI event before the racing blows out the roof at the US National Cyclo-cross Championship in Oregon the following weekend.

Please welcome the first annual "Fitness Concepts Capital ‘Cross Classic" to the national cyclo-cross community of racing. This is a Category 2 UCI event and will be held under UCI regulations, UCI scale of penalties will apply. The UCI Elite Men, UCI U23, UCI Elite Women, and UCI Women 35+ must have a valid UCI license; a valid USCF or NORBA license is needed for all other races. Non-licensed riders must purchase a one-day license (additional $5 fee) during registration.

We are pleased to announce that Fitness Concepts will be the title sponsor for the race this year. Fitness Concepts is the largest and most successful coaching company in the region, with a staff of 13 coaches and over 150 clients, which includes three of the top road teams in the area. Ken Mierke, Fitness Concepts’ head coach, is Director of Training for Joe Friel's Ultrafit and a prominent coach and frequent contributor on the TrainingBible.com message board. Additional information about Fitness Concepts can be found on their web site: www.Fitness-Concepts.com

Lake Fairfax Park (home of the Water Mine water park) in Reston, VA has been a favorite destination for ‘cross races the previous 6 years as its natural bowl-like setting is perfect for ‘cross racing. With terrain and elevation changes perfectly suited for the shorter, more intense style of cyclo-cross racing, this park offers it all. A well-balanced, technical course promises to be a good battle among for all classes. The park authority has taken a special interest in offering the best possible racing experience and making sure that it will be a very visual, spectator-friendly community event.

The Fitness Concepts Capital ‘Cross Classic would like to thank our event sponsors: Fitness Concepts, City Bikes, Trails End Cycling Company, Plum Grove Cyclery, Bicycle Outfitters, Bike Lane, Verge, Cycle-smart, Honey Stinger, and BikeReg.com online registration.

Fellow organizers,

I'd like to get us all together again for what I'm hoping will now be an
annual US Association of International Cyclo-Cross Organizers meeting.

I'm happy to announce the Peter Van Den Abeele from the UCI has agreed to
attend our meeting.

I'm interested in hearing topics from all of you that should be on the
agenda. What questions do you have? What feedback do you want to offer?

I expect we'll discuss next year's schedule as well, so please come prepared
with your preferred dates.

I'd like to submit Saturday, 7-8 pm, at the race hotel, unless there are any
objections or suggestions otherwise. I'll work on getting space for us.

Looking forward to seeing all of you there.

Thanks for the invite but I am retiring from promoting races after this year. I've been the primary promoter for 7 CX races and the NJ State RR and worked with Wade on 2 crits and another State RR. I've got 2 little kids at home, and new job blah blah blah - long story short - I'm done. Going out with a bang with the USGP/MAC race.

Wade will probably continue Beacon's CX race.

Organizers,

I want to try to put together a tentative schedule before our meeting next
week.

If you've got a date in mind, or if you're just staying on the same date,
please let me know. Some of you have already contacted me, so thanks for
that.

Also, if you're wondering about the World Cup rumors, yes, it's me putting
in the bid, but it won't be until 2006/7.

Thanks! I talked to Peter Van den Abeele today, and he's looking forward to
meeting with us. I'll announce the location as soon as it's finalized.

Congrats on the WC bid. You deserve it. I copied Wade Hess above. He needs to get on this list since he's taking over as the primary promoter of Beacon CX. I'm retiring.

Naturally. But I'll still find a way to mock those not in attendance as
punishment.

Attached are the minutes from last year's meeting, to refresh people of what
the issues were a year ago, and provide and example of what you can expect.

Date, Chip, date. Are you planning to stay on your date next year?

Overview of the inaugural meeting of the US Association of International
Cyclo-Cross Organizers

All,

We had what I would consider to be a very successful meeting at nationals,
albeit a late start and finish, and sleepy eyes by the time we were done. To
assemble a large portion of US UCI event organizers in the same room for the
first time was a major, historic accomplishment. I'd like to thank all of
you who attended.

I didn't keep meeting minutes, but I'll try to review the main points that
were hit upon, and directions that were chosen.

Present were race organizers from CA, WA, OR, NC, UT, MA, ME, and MI, as
well as "interested party" Geoff Proctor, and USAC National Events
Coordinator Matt Murphy. (Matt's new assistant was present as well, and I
apologize for forgetting his name.)

Major Points:

1. Matt handed out the UCI calendar application for 2004. The original
deadline was Dec. 15, but that has been extended to Jan. 5. To receive a
copy of the application from Matt by fax, please e-mail him your fax number
and contact info at <mmurphy@...>. Matt is also on the USAICO
e-mail list.

2. USAC permit fees must be paid according to your full prize list in 2004.
Previous "arrangements" some promoters had in the past, carrying over from
Tara Morris, are no longer valid. This permit fee is different from your
calendar fee you pay to the UCI.

Schedule Issues/Philosophy:

3. It was put forth that the SuperCup raised the level of 'cross in the US,
and broke down many of the regional, even tribal barriers that created much
of the negative rivalries that existed in the '80's and '90's. It was agreed
that with the new generation of riders and promoters, healthy rivalries are
fun, but we're committed to working together and learning from each other
for the benefit of US 'cross as a whole. Destructive scene rivalry is dead.

4. Without the SuperCup, the "middle" of the sport has been filled in and
strengthened by the growth of a Cyclo-Cross National Racing Calendar,
consisting of all the US UCI races. However, we still need to be moving
towards a reintroduction of a "US Pro Cyclo-Cross Tour," consisting of a
weekend of the biggest races in each strong 'cross region, currently the
Northwest, NorCal, New England, and the Mid-Atlantic. Ideally, this would
happen in 2005. Even after that, the 'cross NRC will still have value, as
UCI points will continue to be a factor in worlds selection criteria, as
Matt pointed out. However, a pro 'cross tour will guarantee the best riders
from every region attending at least 6-8 races before nationals.

5. It was agreed that the development of the NRC had to take a bi-coastal
approach, with the middle races (currently, Michigan, Salt Lake, and Reno)
trying to fit in amongst that schedule where it makes the most sense. That
means the east coast and west coast first working together to make sure that
for riders within the respective region, there are no (or minimal) conflicts
within driving distances, and that there are races every weekend. From
there, each coast will come together (primarily Jim Brown representing the
West, and myself representing the East), and try to mitigate major conflicts
if possible.

With the incredibly early deadline from the UCI this year, however, this
will be nearly impossible. The current situation is essentially that the
east has already finalized it's schedule, leaving room for established big
west coast weekends (namely Seattle/Portland and Nationals), and hoping the
Western promoters can work around that schedule to everyone's benefit.

6. It was suggested that regions with warmer weather begin to look to
organizing UCI events after nationals, in January. Generally, the season was
considered to begin the weekend after Labor Day and go until the weekend
before Christmas. Further expansion is desired at least until the second
weekend of January (the traditional national championships date), and in
further years, until the last weekend of January (the weekend before the
world championships).

7. A January nationals was generally agreed as desirable, with many caveats.
No one was in a hurry to see it happen, yet the consensus seemed to be that
we would get there sooner or later, and was a necessary carrot for extending
the season in most regions. For it to happen, a promoter needs to put in a
bid willing to go on that date, the "mood" of the 'cross community would be
evaluated, and a decision made. The pros and cons were many, we've all heard
them before, and are too long to list here.

8. It was agreed that all the US UCI organizers would loosely join together
under the banner of the US Association of International Cyclo-Cross
Organizers, modeled after the AIOC-Cross in Europe. The USAICO e-mail list
would become the primary means of communication between UCI organizers, and
between Matt Murphy and us. From this e-mail on, all correspondence will be
done there. UCI race organizers receiving this e-mail who have not joined
the list should do so here: <http://groups.yahoo.com/group/USAICO/>. This
group will be limited to one person per event, an organizer or president of
a series of events, and Matt Murphy. We would be happy to have a
representative from the UCI and/or the AIOC-Cross on the list as well.

9. It was suggested that all UCI promoters should generally try to attend
each other's events, but specifically the US Nationals Championships and the
UCI World Championships, as our two "conventions." We agreed on a yearly
meeting at nationals, and all were encouraged to attend the AIOC-Cross
meeting at Worlds this year, to become part of the international 'cross
community.

10. The East Coast 'Cross schedule was presented:

Date Race Name Location Category
Oct. 16 Downeast Cyclo-Cross New Gloucester, ME 3
Oct. 23 Granogue, DE 2
Oct. 24 Wissahickon, PA 3
Oct. 30 Central Mass Cyclo-Cross to End Homelessness Worcester, MA 2
Oct. 31 ECV/Clif Bar Cyclo-Cross Gloucester, MA 2
Nov. 6 Saturn Classic Harrisburg, PA 2
Nov. 7 Harrisburg, PA 3
Nov. 13 Chainbiter 6.0 Farmington, CT 2/3?
Nov. 14 14th Cycle-Smart International Northampton, MA 2
Nov. 20 Beacon Bridgeton, NJ 3
Nov. 21 Highland Park, NJ 2
Nov. 27 Gearworks Cyclo-Cross Sterling, MA 3
Dec. 4 Reston, VA 3
Dec. 4 WE Stedman Grand Prix of Cyclo-Cross S. Kingston, RI 3
Dec. 5 NEBC Cyclo-Cross Merrimack, NH 3

Other known dates were Jonny Sundt's race on the last weekend of September,
Michigan on the first weekend of October, and Portland/Seattle on the second
weekend of October. The 2004 trade show in Vegas is on October 6-8,
Wednesday-Friday.

With that, the meeting was generally concluded, with a commitment to keeping
the lines of communication open and continuing to work together.

I believe that every US UCI organizer is represented here, with the
exception of the Reno promoter, whose e-mail has bounced in the past. If
anyone knows this person and can contact him or forward this e-mail to him
at a better address, please do so, and CC me on it.

Thank you, everyone.

K, Wade has been invited to the list.

Brian, I can take you off when you want, or you can remove yourself when
you're ready, or your welcome to stay on if you want to still advice Wade on
the race. It's up to you.

Thanks for all your hard effort putting Beacon on. Glad you finally got to
see it to UCI status before you passed it on.

So, will you stay on the same date?

Thanks, Kelly.

Regarding the GP, I can only tell you how the process went last year for
choosing the dates. I don't expect to be involved in any way next year.

Basically, Bruce Fina, Brad Ross, Stu Thorne, Matt Murphy and myself sat
down at worlds, looked at the calendar, and tried to pick 3 double weekends
that represented the best spacing on the calendar, and provided 2 plane
trips in either direction, including nationals. (2 west coast, 2 east
coast). It wasn't necessarily an attempt to pick the absolute best races, or
all the cat. 1 races. (Northampton wasn't included, for instance, or
Granogue, and there were no races in CA.) Logistics were as important as
anything else.

This year, my understanding is that they'd like to make sure there's also a
double California weekend, and the races that were in the GP this year
aren't automatically GP races next year.

Really, the question is best suited for Bruce Fina, who is not on this list.
I'm simply making educated guesses.

Adam

into October. I may prefer moving my date forward, it helps in certain
logistics for me.

we will stick to our first sunday in decemer, the 4th for 2005.  i had entertained the idea of sliding it earlier, considering my race hasn't happened quite yet, i've got not time to think about it.  either way, count us in!

As for the Beacon Cross date, I would keep it on the same date
for now. I emailed the HP guys to see what they had in mind. Beacon &
HP on the same weekend seems to work well for everyone. Having the
Beacon race on a Saturday is really nice for me.
I have not heard from the USGP guy's. Early in the season the game
plan was to keep the 04 USGP races for the 05 season. Nothing was
writen down stating that, it was just said. I know they want the USGP
to grow from 6 races to 8-10 over a few season. Adding a weekend to
the west coast and a weekend in the central part of the US.
I will not be at Nationals. Being that I work in retail & this is
the Holiday shopping season. It is VERY VERY difficult for me to take
a day off in Dec.

As in our previous conversations, Hampton Velo is
pleased to put on a weekend double in 2005, on the
same date we utilized last year. Looks like c2 on
Saturday October 1st, and c1 on Sunday October 2nd,
2005. Thanks!

Adam and everyone,
I expect that the Maine races will be on the same weekend as this year (which would be October 15 ant 16). I will probably be somewhat less involved with those races. John and Paul will be directing them. I'll help as much as I can.
The Gear Works Baystate Cyclocross could be held again on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but that is not set. Since the Nationals will be following shortly, it might be better to move that date forward. If that is the case I'd like to work that out with the rest of the east coast cross series promoters.
See you all this weekend or at Nationals.

Hi all,

I'm meeting with our sponsor on Monday. I should then have a better idea of what
Gloucester is doing in '05.

We are looking into the double race weekend option again.

See you either this weekend in Rhode Island or in Portland next weekend!

Adam,
It's been confirmed that Louisville would like to host a UCI race on Saturday, October 8th.  We'd be interested in doing the Cincinnati race the following day, Sunday, October 9th.

Thanks!
Mitch

Good question.
More Elite riders is the obvious benefit. Media is a function of how hard &
smart the promoter works themselves. Maybe, a little more
National/VeloNewsish type of press. This however does little good
obtaining/keeping non-industry sponsors, vs local print, radio & TV
advertsising and publicity.
If USGP hooked up with OLN, then it is game on.
USGP selection could be interesting in '05.

Hello Adam,

Robert Linden here from Tailwind Enterprises in Michigan.  I would like to let you know that I have come up with support for two UCI Cat 2 events for 2005.  Both events will be run at Waterford Hills Raceway and since New York has expanded their event to both Saturday & Sunday races on the October weekend we both had used in 2004, I will move my dates up one week to Sept 24 and 25, 2005.

Looking forward to the meeting again at Nationals in Oregon... I'll be there.

For the Beacon race, we had more racers than ever
before. Made more money even with a much greater
payout. I also work at Beacon Cycling stores so the
VeloNews coverage has helped me with sales at Beacon.
Also had Bridgeton News & The Press of Atlantic City
run 2 stories(Sat & Sun edition) about the event. That
helped out with sales more than VeloNews did.
So as team Pres and working sales at Beacon, it was a
win-win. The team made enough money from race entries
to be a UCI in 2005. And I had customers come to
Beacon due to the press coverage.

In short - No, Yes, Yes

No more money. Actually it cost us additional money - some nominal
fees to USGP (like MAC does) and some 'mandatory' expenses we voted
on (like using Fries to announce). We did get a lot of merchandise
prizes to add to what we had (which was a lot to begin with) but all
the cash payout was 100% Beacon. All the financial risk was Beacon's.

Yes more riders. Beacon typically had some of the lowest attendance
in the MAC, regardless of date, weather, competing races etc. Our
racer #'s were up all over, just like the rest of the MAC, but 55
elite men, 35 elite women and master's and junior fields with real
national flair could be attributed to USGP. With 265 total, we were
3rd highest attendance in the MAC. We were typically damn near or at
the bottom. HP was #1.

Yes more media. This had two parts. The obvious part was VN and
whatnot. The less obvious part is it was easier to sell the story
idea to local and regional media when we could pitch as part of a
regional AND national series. We got a couple of before and after
stories in the local and regional press.

All of the above came at some cost of increased coordination issues
(especially resolving potential or actual conflicts between MAC and
USGP sponsors) and just more bureaucracy - more emails, more people
to deal with, more phone calls, more egos and personalities etc. As
everyone knows from promoting races, there's a lot to do and tons of
details. This added to the to-do's significantly.

All in all, very worth it from my perspective.
