Hi All,

I thought I'd let everyone know that the tile 'museum' has more
exhibits and has updated its website.

http://www.tile-heaven.co.uk/index.htm

Beware - very long load on the 'all-together' page, but I think well
worth it as an inspiration source.

I'm trying to drag those that are going to polydays this weekend out
of lurkdom!!

So who's gonna be there - and what classes are you going to be doing?
Who am I likely to meet up with?? Anyone travelling there from London
who wants company on a train?

I'm going to be doing both classes with Sarah Shriver and the antique
bead one with Alison Ingham.

Hi Iris - we'll have to make sure that we say hello to each other
properly! I know what you mean with sorting things out. I have to try
and see if I can get it all into a small enough mass to be able to
carry half way across the country on the train!

I miss chatting with you and Jo at pcc. We wont be in the same
classes, but that shouldn't stop us catching up on things! I hope you
are bringing lots of things to show, I just loved your torture
chamber from last time.

Look forward to seeing you on Friday.

With apologies to anyone who sells the proper clay modelling and
carving tools, I think I should tell everyone about some 1/2 price
bargains at my old favourites, Maplin electronics.

They're currently selling a set of 'Solder-aid' tools which are all
double ended in sets of 6 - ie 12 different tool shapes - for a
fiver!

If you have a nearby Maplin shop have a look - if not, check the
website...

Hey there Sue - Polydays is a 2 day away thingy. Organised by the British
Polymer Clay Guild, it consists of 2 days of classes fun and pasta machines!
It's held every other year at about this time of year it seems. This will be
the 3rd time it will be held at Loughborough University Campus in
Leicestershire. That isn't to say that it will be there every time, but they
seem to offer the guild the best deal for accommodation and rooms for
classes etc that they've found.

I should have posted here months back about it. It's this weekend so it's a
bit late for booking now! For those not local, we arrive and stay 2 nights,
friday and saturday night - local folk can just attend the classes if they
want. There are 3 different time slots for classes and with a choice of 5
different classes in each slot. A class lasts 3 hours. There's 2 on the
saturday and one on the sunday morning, the saturday evening is polyparty
time as well as showing and possibly selling off of your wares. Sue's
polymer clay pit is open on and off most of the weekend (can't remember the
times) so we can also buy more supplies as we run out! Sunday afternoon
before we head off we are also invited to the guild AGM, I'll stick around
for that and head off afterwards.

Oh I am definitely getting excited. Save your money for the next one sue!

I really haven't got shares in Maplin, but...

I've just had notice of the fact that they're now selling something
that will be a real boon to any polyclayer who needs to make moulds.

The material is called POLYMORPH and is a reusable, low temperature,
granulated plastic moulding agent.

In order to get the stuff flexible enough to mould, all you have to
do is drop it into warm (65C) water for a few minutes. Then the
plastic is nicely malleable and can be pressed into any shape, which
it retains while it's cool. The plasticity is regained by re-heating.

It's obviously not going to replace silicone mould materials but if
you need to make a temporary mould, this stuff is perfect!

Its Maplin reference code is N15AT and it's available in 250g and
500g pots.

Hi Alan,

Have you tried it yet?

I'm back, STILL recovering - but I did have a fantastic time!

Where shall I start? Umm....... Friday - journey not too bad etc on
the train - still took me 6 hours in total from my door to the halls
at Loughborough but not tooooo bad. I met Jami Miller at the station
as I got off the train (she was hanging around from the previous
train to wait til she saw someone she recognised!) and we went to the
University together on the bus and then managed to get lost trying to
find the place to check in. But at least we got lost together!
Got a wonderful goody back in the evening as our welcome package with
fimo, premo, bits and pieces as well as the new fimo gel stuff - the
fimo equivalent of tls I believe (and no I haven't tried it yet!) I
also won a prize on the raffle on Sunday and picked a second goody
bag so I now have 2 bottles of the stuff (heehee).

Sue had the polymer clay pit selling clay supplies open on and off
all weekend and I spent quite a bit of money there!

Saturday I did Sarah's Shriver's caning workshop - she normally does
it in either 1 or 2 days, but had to cram it into a 3 hour session.
Let's just say she was rather challenged - it really does need 2
days! I thought she was an absolutely brilliant teacher and just
oozes talent, I was amazed at how much she managed to cram into such
a short session. Very nice lady too!

In the afternoon I did Alison Ingham's ancient bead workshop. From
working with such large bits of clay in the morning it was odd to
switch to working in such a minute scale - but EVERYONE did
brilliantly. We each made one exceedingly detailed fabulous bead.
There's a wonderful picy of all the class beads I've just added to
the photo list - all the beads in the class were beautiful. Alison
did a heck of a lot of preparation before hand, she
made this wonderful little bead holding gadget thing for each of us
so you can work on a bead and not smoosh it. Very clever yet simple
stuff. Also supplied each of us with a tiny wire wrapped gem stone.
Again a brilliant class.

I wasn't taking a class with Kathy Dewey, but did manage to sneak in
and take a peek. OOOOHHhhhhhhh!!! I am not into sculpting at all, but
boy was there was some brilliant stuff there! I also snuck into
Christine Aliberts class at one point too to see everyone making some
wonderful wire worked necklaces and she also did a surface techniques
class making really crazy looking quilt boxes.

Saturday evening was demos and polyparty (I think) - at least I know
we had demo's at some time during the day but I don't remember when!
Jami Miller wasn't teaching a class but had her arm twisted to do
some demo-ing with the oval bead rollers and other tools and texture
thingies. Christine Alibert demo-ed wire working. I love wire work! I
never managed to get close enough to see Sue Heaser's demo, she was
doing tiny tiny fairies (I think - they were tiny somethings anyway!)
everyone was so close to her I would only have been able to get close
if I'd crawled imbetween on my hands and knees and pushed through -
and there was so much else going on I didn't get the chance to try
that (but I did think about it!)

Alison Gallant did some wonderful caning demo's and Philippa Todd was
doing tls and the new fimo gel demo's. Great stuff. We also set up
for selling things on the saturday evening and I was absolutely
thrilled that I actually sold a few bits!! Really chuffed at that.
Some of the stuff that was being sold or on show was to die for - I
LOVE Hen Scott's sculpted boxes and Alex Blythe's insects and she
also had the most fantabulous dragon!!

Sunday morning I had another class with Sarah - her wonderful
bracelets and bangles. Yet another class that really needed at least
a day if not two. I do hope they can get her back again, I really
feel I wanted to spend at least a couple of days on her workshops.
The class sort of over-ran into lunch and before I knew it I had to
quickly pack everything and try and eat something cos the AGM raffle
and then the AGM started!

I didn't see the AGM all through to the end I wanted to head back on
the train with company and Jami and Sarah said they were going to
leave at 2pm for the station and they said they didn't mind if I
joined them.

When we arrived in London I left Jami and Sarah at the station and
headed off to my friend Emma Beane's house where I stayed for the
next 2 nights. I dragged Emma round all the bead shops and all sorts
all over London on the Monday and came home on the Tuesday.

I also found out that Emma's 'little business' of selling rubber
stamps, wasn't quite so little as she'd let on. I spent most of
Tuesday morning going through what amounted to almost a complete shop
of stuff!! From more fimo and tons of rubberstamps to wire and wire
twirling thingies, to pearl-ex, the mica flake stuff and UTEE and all
sorts. I spent money big time!

That's it I think! I'm still recovering, but I think that about
covers it for now.

Those that have pestered for the news, hope that fills the gap!!

I've also just started uploading a ton of picys here. They should be
in the photos thingy labelled 'polydays 2003'. Anyone that sees
something there that belong to them and wants a name attached - just
ask and it shall be done. Similarly if you see something there that's
yours and you want it removed - do ask. I tried to ask everyone if
they minded photos going up but sorta lost track of who said what!

And lastly - I got to meet Iris in person at last but wahhhhhhh, only
managed to speak to her very briefly. I'm sorry Iris we never got to
chat more.

Yes Shelley I am back too!! and recovered ,I think. This was the fourth Polydays
I had been too and I still remember the worry of having to walk in on my own at
Derby. This time I reckon I knew by sight at least half of the people there.
It was like a family party. ....

My first class was with Alex and we made a jungle cane.Alex made it look so
easy..... I reduced mine too far I think --you need some good glasses to see the
deail but its a good technique to know about building a cane, and I still have
another chair to cover and try to learn from my mistakes.

On Saturday afternoon I had a class with Kathy Dewey. We sculpted a human head
in great detail --adding measured amounts of clay to the head. Kathy was a bit
horrified at the clay we had brought to use --it was so soft ! Our three hour
class carried on to dinner time and even after it! We missed some of the demos
but really enjoyed the ones we did see.We all managed to get our heads to the
baking stage but didn't have time to put the hair on. I can now boast that I
have finished it now and am very pleased. It was a 1/6scale but the instructions
can soon be used for twelfth scale.

On Sunday morning I was back with Kathy again, making a horses head. We started
with an aluminium armature and once more built up muscles and features in small
measured pieces. I have no idea how Kathy managed to keep going as she did. She
was constantly 'on the go' and gave us far more than 100% of her knowledge and
expertise.

I made a good choice for my classes but there were more that I would have
liked to do, philippa's picnic, Alison's iridescent crackle Sues crockery oh
and many more. We had the choice of so many talented tutors.
Thank you to the people who organised this for us , you did a great job.

Shelley and I have talked quite a bit in the Chat room but never managed to get
together. Now that we have at least exchanged a few words in the flesh we will
know who we are talking to --if we ever manage to find time to chat again!

thank you thank you shelley for your trip report. what a wonderful
experience!! i'm gonna hafta go see all the picys!! hurry up!! *grin* may i
glean any pictures of yours with sarah shriver in them for her website, plz?
will post copyright to you, of course!!

iris -- it is my life's ambition to take a class from kathy dewey!! you
lucky gal!! will we get to see your wonderful creations, too? oh- and
over-reduced canes: no biggie. simply roll like you're reducing only place
your hands at the ENDs of the the cane and work inward. this fattens them
up. you can also cut a thick slice then run it thru the pasta machine, going
one step thinner each time (don't skip sizes or you'll get some distortion)
and giving a quarter turn with each roll thru.

consequence we have about a dozen new members (Welcome! Please give

I hope we do get together to 'chat' again soon. We never seen to be about at

Sunni - feel free to glean whatever you like from there. I've got a few
others I think somewhere that I haven't put up. Just looked again and
realised not all the picys I was meant to put up are actually there!!

Hey Margaret - haven't spoken to you for ages. I missed you at polydays. As
we are usually quite quiet here and as this is very relevant to the UK and
in keeping with that, I thought I'd put all the photos here. The photos from
the last polydays are also lurking around somewhere. I think I wasn't sure
how to do it last time and they are hidden under 'files' rather than
'photos'. We're going to be getting a collection!!

Hello everyone,

Thank you, Shelley, for posting the photos from last
weekend's Polydays and giving such a good report. I
have received some lovely letters from people who came
to Loughborough and it looks like we'll be doing it
all again in 2005. This gives lots of time to save up
and we hope to offer the whole weekend (including the
en-suite shower room!!!) for about £200 which is very
good value in comparison with other residential
courses. A large number of new people came this time
but we still have only one man and he has been to all
four weekends!! Where are all you gentlemen clayers?

We were so lucky to have Sarah Shriver and Kathy Dewey
among the tutors and all week I have been rolling
Skinner blends and making bracelet cores in between
making and wrapping our soap. I agree that 3 hours
isn't long enough for Sarah's workshops - maybe we
should go to Ravensdale and do them again! Are you
going this year, Margaret?

If anyone has any comments to make about Polydays
(preferably nice ones, please!!) can you e-mail me off
list as it helps when we plan the next weekend.

Thanks very much.

Alison.
Polydays Co-ordinator.

I would love to go, but cannot afford it.

Maybe next time. I will have to start saving for it lol

Sounds like a lot of fun.

I am in London, Emma

I have only been using polymer clay for a few months, and would love
to attend classes. They sound like a lot of fun. I just wish there
were some classes in London.

Hey there Em - glad you popped in to say hi here! Yeah I did sorta go
a bit crazy on the old credit cards last weekend. I haven't had the
guts to look closely at the exact amount I spent yet! And you didn't
help - I spent tons on your supplies as well!

For everyone else out there - I highly recommend Emma for rubber
stamps and rubber stamping related supplies - this means as well as
stamps she has wire, wire twirling thingies, pearl-ex, embossing
powders and tons more stuff that is IMO much better used on polyclay
than with ordinary rubber stamping! Emma it's about time you got your
catalogue published and you should shout out to everyone here exactly
what it is you sell.

Here you go Margaret - http://www.tinymicejewellery.com/

That's Alison Ingham's site - she's the one that works tiny tiny and
I did the 'ancient beads' class with last weekend. Her work is even
better and more unbelievable in the flesh.

Hi there Alison, I'm glad you received some lovely letters about
polydays at Loughborough. I should think so, it was well organised
(thank you) and the workshops were brilliant. And I'm sure I'm not
alone that I would be exceedingly bitterly disappointed if you
decided you couldn't do it again! So there you go, you HAVE to now! I
also really approve of the en-suite shower rooms. That was soo much
better than the other times. I'm sure most people would be willing to
pay that little extra to have the en-suite.

I haven't been quite as busy as you! I've managed to finish off the
bracelet I started in Sarah's class. I tried doing another one but
found the buna stuff I have from over here doesn't work when baked.
It crumbles away (impossible to remove the bits). So I'm busy hunting
for a buna stubstitute. Gonna try some different threads and things
and see what I can find that works. Also gonna see if I can find a
fishing tackle supply place and try and get some duck decoy. Next
time I'll test a small bit first before I make the whole bangle and
find I can't get the cord out!! Live and learn.

I would LOVE to go to Ravensdale to do Sarah's classes again, but I'm
not sure I can quite afford or justify that sort of expense! I wonder
if they'd be any chance of getting her over again and organising
something for a 2 day class with her.

Anyways, I must get on, I'm gonna go duck decoy cord hunting!!

Shelley,

Thanls so much for such a prompt reply! I now have Allison's page
bookmarked again, right along with yours. I've enjoyed both web sites
for quite a long time!!

Since I first saw 'Tiny Mice' I've wanted a class but the closest one in
California, so far, has been in San Diego and I now live in northern CA
a good 700 miles away. Now that I have Alison's page again I'll find
out if she will be coming another time and perhaps will be a bit closer
to me. Do you travel to teach? Perhaps you will be closer?

I haven't been to the UK in awhile. I NEED a trip!!!

Thanks again.

Margaret CA
