Hello All,

You may remember I mentioned a few months ago that Maplin Elictronics
had begun to sell neodymium alloy, silver plated magnets with
incredible strength for their size - I suggested they were ideal for
home-made jewellery clasps.

Anyway - I've bought quite a few of the things and have found then of
particular interest to older or disabled folks who can't handle
standard fiddly, mechanical bolts, barrels or hooks etc.

A little bird at Maplin informed me that these are now on special
offer - possibly in order to sell those they have - never to be
replaced?

They were £2.49 for five pairs but now they're only £1.49 for the
same pack size.

The Maplin ref is N51AK - from their shops or internet site.

Hi Alan,
I bought some and they are very good indeed (thanks for the tip!). Just worth a
mention though - magnetic clasps shouldn't be used by people with pacemakers (I
saw this in the Rio Grande catalogue). I assume it's because magnets and
pacemakers don't mix well.

That's the best malachite I've seen. Do it in blue for Azurite, and
try blue/green blends for azurite metamorphising into malachite. I
think cross cuts of howlite have the same spherical structure.

HI
I am contemplating upgrading my digital camera - the one I have
works ok, but I'm to the point where I'd like something a
little better - I need to be able to take high quality pictures
(closeups) of smallish things, so the macro feature is very
important to me - can anyone recommend one camera over the other?
THanks for any help you can offer

Thanks Katherine,

Also, someone at another group I belong to suggested the whole
palette could be changed to shades of brown and would make a good
burl-walnut in clay.

Yes - I did a fair bit of rockhounding in my youth - almost got
some 'Blue John' fluorite complex from Castleton in Derbyshire - but
I was put off by the patrol guards, and large dogs. Doing it this way,
in clay is definitely safer!

hahahahahahahah!!! ok - I have a sony mavica. don't know if they sell the
mavicas anymore or not. but it's pretty idiot proof, has a macro function
which is very important for close-up work, and takes floppy disks. the new
sony's use CD's. the picture clarity in the new ones, i'm told, is almost as
good as a 35mm! i like the sony cuz i can take a picture, walk up to any
computer, insert the floppy disk and download it right there with no
proprietary software. i don't need any ports, busses, or whatever! the
photos are processed and ready to use right in the camera. and, if i'm
taking pictures out in the field, i can make copies right there, using the
camera, and hand them off to whoever's with me!! it doesn't get much better
than that. --sunni

Hi Sue,

I agree with Sunni, following her advice to someone else about the
Sony Mavica FD92, I bought one - like her's - the model with the
floppy disc storage facility (but I use the alternative Memory sticks
instead now they've become cheaper).

Anyway - it is idiot proof and because it's so good, my 35mm SLRs are
gathering dust!

If you can only find the more recent model with mini-CD storage, try
that - I've heard very good reports about it.

Good luck, Alan

Hi Sue

Forgive for emailing you direct. I wonder if you will want to make
prints from your digital camera? If so, the earlier Mavica may not be
the best buy as it does not have enough resolution. For 6" x 4" prints
you need about 2 megabyte resolution and for 10" x 8" a camera with 4
megabyte is required. The Mavica would be good for computer display of
your close-ups. A friend of mine uses a Canon G2 camera for close up
work and he is very pleased with it. It is a little expensive but I
guess you only get what you pay for. Why not visit some of your local
dealers and try a little hands on experience?

Good luck

Anthony

I also have a sony mavica. I also love it that you can just stick in a
floppy and the transfer is very good and quick and no fuss and of course
floppy's are cheap. Drawbacks are that it is a large camera. I don't find it
brilliant if I'm away, it's bulky to carry. Also although the floppy's are
exceedingly convenient they don't hold that many picys on a disk. On high
res. mode I can get about 4, on medium I think it's about a dozen, and on
low it's about 20 or so. If I was going for another camera I think I'd try
and find one that was smaller - make sure that whatever it records on that
I'd need to transfer to my computer are reasonably priced so that I can get
several so I can take tons of picys. Also the most important part would be
the macro function. I've heard that some macro functions don't do as close
up as you'd think. Some think a foot is close - I can focus on something an
inch or two away from the camera with the mavica.

Are you in the UK and do you have a Jessops anywhere near you or similar
good quality camera shop? They are excellent with their advice. I wouldn't
necessarily buy one from them (usually more expensive), but it may be worth
going with a list of questions and see what they say. A digi camera is quite
an expensive item so you need as much feedback as you can get before you
spend.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Hello everyone!

Another site to check is http://dpreview.com. They review just about
every digital camera ever made.

My sister has a Canon G2, she's very happy with it. I've got a Sony
DSCF707, which is also very good and can focus on very close objects.
At work, we've got a Nikon Coolpix 885, which is small and also takes
very good pictures. The Canon and the Nikon use memory cards, the Sony
uses memory sticks.

HI
Thanks to everyone who offered their advice on the digital
cameras - at least I have somewhere to start now - there
are hundreds of different types out there, and I wasn't crazy
about the idea of walking in to a camera store and saying...
I need a camera - at least not without having some idea of
what it is I need! I'm going to see about the Mavica - Alan
sent me a fabulous picture of his cat - close up - you can
count the hairs! I did an initial search on the internet, and there
are a few to be had still - though I think that particular model is no
longer being made - but may give the local camera store a try
too. Thanks again for all your help!

Hi Sue G & all
I used an old Mavica years ago to produce the oranges project on my
website. But things have moved on from then!
I did my 'Making Miniature Food' book with a Ricoh RDC 5000. which at
the time cost £600 but the macro is excellent at 3.5 megapixels. And it's
very user friendly. If you can find one second hand under £200 buy it!
People asked me who took the photos because they're my hands. when
I said I did they were really surprised (I'm not a trained photographer).

I have now got an RDC7 which is a little less user friendly but has great
macro and a pro function that produces truly awesome quality. You can
see the results on my website on the marketplace section.
Again, that's maybe a year and a half old. things may have changed
again. The problem I have is not with cameras it's with old art
departments in the publishing world. They don't seem to understand
digital technology and they insist on scanning pictures. So, even if you
send them awesome quality JPGs they print them off and scan them
back in instead of converting them in the digital domain. This results in
loss of quality. They even did that with my book! I was getting my editor
ringing me up saying "Will YOU print your pictures out and then we can
scan them back in, because you seem to be able to get better quality".
I had to tell them my printer is an epson 660 A hundred quid printer!
They are the professionals. That was a couple of years ago too and
again some things are changing. You still get magazines and publishers
who can't handle digital photographs, but they're the dinosaurs.
Hugs

Hi -
I have read about setting PC by boiling it - and since I hate sanding and
buffing, I am tempted by the descriptions of the nice gloss that results. Yet
I'm wary of the criticism that it doesn't get the clay up to the right
temperature.

So: has anyone boiled PC in a pressure cooker?
This should raise the temperature, and the pressure may help drive the
plasticizer from the clay (one function of the heat is to evaporate the volatile
plasticizer, and the theory is that boiling water somehow draws out the
plasticizer at lower temps... end of chemistry/physics lesson).

Also - you could use a deep pressure cooker/canner to steam cure larger items.
The piece could be set on a trivet/stand, and kept above the (shallow) water. A
little bit of water would generate a lot of hot, pressured steam, which would
(in theory) do as good a job of setting the clay as boiling.

So - before I ruin my wife's pressure cooker: has anyone out there tried this
before?

actually tried boiling poly clay. But you could take a look at

something there about it. Diane Black collects just about every

So who's gonna be there - and what classes are you going to be doing?
Who am I likely to meet up with?? Anyone travelling there from London
who wants company on a train?

I'm going to be doing both classes with Sarah Shriver and the antique
   bead one with Alison Ingham.

Hi Iris - we'll have to make sure that we say hello to each other
properly! I know what you mean with sorting things out. I have to try
and see if I can get it all into a small enough mass to be able to
carry half way across the country on the train!

I miss chatting with you and Jo at pcc. We wont be in the same
classes, but that shouldn't stop us catching up on things! I hope you
are bringing lots of things to show, I just loved your torture
chamber from last time.

Look forward to seeing you on Friday.

Hi Chris, we must make sure we say hello to each other and introduce
ourselves!!

Anyone out there from nearer my neck of the wood going?? I'm in
Dorset.

Shelley (having assessed the situation believes she needs bigger bags
and a sherpa to carry them)
