Hi Suzann!

What wonderful news!! I think it's great to hear, that there's focus
on polymer clay in non-polymerclay magazines!!! Is it possible, that
you could scan the pages in (is it allowed), so that we could all
see?? I don't think we can buy the magazine in Denmark ;-(

I definitely have to find out, if I can afford to take a trip to the
U.K. to see the exhibition.. And I think you have done a HUGE job,
getting this done ;-) Really appreciate it!! Maybe someone could take
some pictures from the exhibition, and put it on this group?

Hi Evelyn--

Thank you for your note. I don't think it would be proper to scan
the magazine pages, but I will try to scan some photos of the
exhibition pieces for the group. It may take me a few days.

The exhibition was a lot of work but it was spread out over a long
period of time. The most work was done by the Colour Museum staff
who set up the displays. Several Guild members worked on story
panels, publicity, and selecting pieces for the exhibition.

Your kind words make me feel that all the work is well appreciated.
Thanks again.

I really don't know the answer to your question! I get frustrated with
the busy nature of most of the e-groups and get lost in all the
messages, but this one is always so darn quiet!! I've tried putting a
bit more life into it - honest. Perhaps everyone who reads here should
post a hello and say where they are, what they've been working on
recently and anything else they want to say about themselves.

Perhaps it's the nature of Brits to be quiet - I dunno, cos I'm
certainly not!

Giggling , Nah Shelley I don't think quiet will describe you best ;-))

I'm Helene, Denmark, and on my worktable is a large clay square, that I'll
cut up in a hundred or so "picture" - like pieces. To be put on the menus at
my mother-in-laws birthday party. I'm hoping the best. Mainly because I'm
using Fimo classic (found it on sale) and I've never had a harder clay in my
poor small overworked hands. I'll not be doing this again.

On my future projects list is a few masks, and hopefully a gigantic metal
box (marked Quality Street 2,5 kg box) The preliminary design of it will
take all my crative abilities.

That's what I have

Hugs
Helene

Hi again!

Well, I better tell about myself then, since I asked the question ;-)

I'm Evelyn, 38 years of age, living in Denmark (about 80 km away from
Helene Grove). I got to know polymer clay through the Internet,
looking for somethin regarding jewellery. I found lots of stuff on
Yahoo, and from there I went on and on and on...!! I have made a few
bigger items in polymer clay, but I love making jewellery, combining
polymer clay with other jewellery stuff.

I have made the website "Scandinavian Polymer Clay Guild" on
http://www.geocities.com/pcdenmark/, where I try to promote polymer
clay to the scandinavians, and there have been a lot of feedback
actually.

Two weeks ago we had a meeting in Oslo, Norway at the home of
Christel, a norwegian polyclayer, that I'm sure you know. We were 4
girls/ladies, who made a lot of different stuff, learned a lot from
eachother, and had a lot of fun :-) I have to take pictures of some
of the items I've made, and show it to you in a couple of days ;-)
Maybe some of the others want to do so too?

I've also made a new European webring lately. Here I want to promote
the european style, anso sites non-english. I have got a few already,
but I want a lot more, since I know there's such a lot of wonderful
stuff outthere. The webring is on the address
http://v.webring.com/hub?ring=polyclayeurope

Hope to hear from a lot of you here on UKPolyClay :-) !!!

Hello All,
Im Sam from New York. I was first introduced to polymer clay about 4 yrs ago by
a guy I was working with. He was lifting up a stack of books and his ring got
crushed. When he said he broke his FIMO ring, I thought he'd broken his
finger(duh!). But when he explained what it was and I saw it at the craft store
I decided--hey that could be more fun than mud pies, and certainly easier than
squinting at cross stitch charts. Hope you agree.

Right now I am trying to make clay duplicates of my kitties using the 'Making
Character Figures' book as guide. But the kitties (8 weeks old) are being
terrible models.

Anyhow I'm looking forward to hearing more about all of you. Cheers, SAM

Hi everyone

I'm Sharon from Sheffield in the UK. I've been working with polymer clay for 13
years now. I gave up my day job 7 years ago to set up on my own making my own
range of gifts etc.

I make all my stuff at home in a workshop (big shed) and sell it at Craft Fairs
and Exhibitions around the UK. I make lots of things from greeting cards to
clocks. Today I was making clocks decorated with polymer clay penguins :o)

For the past year I have been making unofficial merchandise for the television
show The League of Gentlemen, of which I'm a huge fan. I made a few key rings
for fun to give to fellow fans at a convention and it took off. My merchandise
is now sold by a shop in the town where the series is filmed (fans go there a
lot on film location pilgrimages) and over the internet. It's all very exciting
:oD

Did anyone else on here end up doing their hobby for a living?

Sharon

First, I want to thank your list owner for allowing this to be posted
here.....

My name is Whitney and I am in the process of creating and publishing a
magazine dedicated to Polymer Clay. The magazine will include information,
tutorials and articles geared towards both beginners and experienced
clayers, and in different areas of PC art..... Dolls, mini's, figures,
canes, sculpting, jewelry, etc. It will also include listings of up and
coming Art and Craft shows and who to contact concerning participation.

In order to finalize the publishing details of my magazine I would like to
ask you all to please take a moment and answer a few short questions. Please
send ALL replies to me personally, rather than thru this list. Thank you
for your time and assistance.

1. What would you like to see in a Polymer Clay Magazine

2. What would you NOT like to see in a Polymer Clay magazine?

3. If kept in a separate section and done nicely, would you mind
advertisements, both from suppliers and artists?

4. Do you feel there is a need for this type of magazine? And if so, would
it interest you ?

Again.....Thank you for your time, your help is most appreciated..

Hi everyone
I understand how it is!!!
I personally think its simply that there is sooooo much info about these days
and some of us are either busy or playing clay and happy to remain lurkers.
I am a member of about 6 or 7 online clay groups as well as a list Mom!! for
Anzacpolyclayers
the "downunder" group.
Many of us are cross members of some groups. The beauty of groups like this is
that although we may be quiet as groups we often correspond amongst ourselves
and get to know one another that way. I myself correspond with many folk on an
individual basis and often get wonderful mail from folk around the world.
thanks Helene for your lovely comment about my country after viewing Lord of the
rings!! Did you know that there was an awful lot of Super Sculpey used in the
creation of army's and trolls for the movie!!!
Next week I am going to Australia for a visit and will be meeting up with 3
clayers.Looking forward to that. I think distance has a huge part to play in
how the "Outside US" groups fuction. Polyclay is very far ahead in a
"marketing" sense over there and we struggle to get our stores to even
understand what it is so when a new person picks up clay they may be your
neighbour but they may also be hundred's of miles away.
We ourselves on these lists are as up to date as we can be with many of us
travelling to the US to learn and constantly aware of what is happening and
going on.
I can remember 9 years ago when i started and I had one person here in my home
town/country that I was aware of. Now there are a few serious folk and hundreds
who are playing through out Australia and New Zealand.
Oh dear I am waffling on today but my passion for polymer and getting it out
there is still as strong as ever and perserverance is a wonderful thing!!!!!!
Cheers to all and Happy claying and Posting

you can join in. The brit crowd is a tough one to get together as life
frequently interferes with clay communique!

I have been playing with polymer clay for about 12 years, but only seriously
for the last two. I am female, 52, retired from the U.S.Air Force, and
living with my wife (yup - wife) of 13 years, my godson (her boy), his wife
and my father in law on five acres of scrub and volcanic rock. We have 2
cats and four cheewawas who keep us laffing when we aren't chuckling among
ourselves. i am the primary guest chat hostess at Polymer Clay Central and
an avid clayer, though I post my work infrequently. I am in the process of
launching my bootstrap handcraft business (finally, after talking about it
for a decade) and have committed to my first fairs. I'm gabby with a
keyboard, but backwardsly shy in person and don't talk much in crowds, so
the fairs are something I'm looking forward to and scared of!

well - that's me in a nutshell. next?

Yes, I'm here although I am a lurker.
I'm a textile artist mainly interested in the construction of Feelt and
stitch. I also do alot of bead work. This is how I came to be interested in
the uses of polymer clays.I view polymer clay as my hobby. although I have
added aspects of its use to my teachig scheduel....Next month I'm teaching
my approach to a group of international feltmakers!! I was delighted to have
some of my work taken for the exhibition in Bradford, I do hope to get to
see it.
The one thing that I have enjoyed is the diversity of what people make out
of the clay. I have also had a very enjoyable time at both of the major
events organised by the BPG as full weekend teaching prgrammes. I have
learned an awfull lot from Maria Segal and Alison and all the other people
whose work I have seen .This has allowed me to develope my own style from
the craft skill they have shared.
My web site is woefully out of date...no pictures of my PC work (yet!!)

Back to lurkdom!!
P.S I use sculpy as I find that the years of feltmaking make Fimo very
difficlt to condition unless I get my coffee grinder out .

Hi Evelyn

This is a very good question, and as list-owner one that I have often asked
myself. There are 178 members, compared to PolymerClayPeople's 764. Part
of
the answer must be 'critical mass' - more people means more activity. In
the past I have tried to keep discussion going, but it never seemed to work.
Due to the low traffic, I have actually considered closing down the list.
There doesn't seem to be much point keeping it going when it's not used.

I hope this isn't too much of a 'downer' for all of you out there! I still
think this could be a valuable forum, but it needs YOU to participate!

OTOH, I am heartened that your plea has brought forth such a response! As
Petra says, many of us are happy to be lurkers, myself included!

Hi,
I can understand how you can have felt the need to close it down, but I hope
and trust that the ball has now been kicked into motion, so to speak...

I have seen other lists, where the chit-chating was very active, only to
dwindle down to a mere 1-2 messages a month almost over night. It's weird,
and I would personally love to see a study of the group dynamics in
n -emailing list such as this and others like it.

I find it indeed odd, that from being eachothers "best friends in the whole
world", to saying less than nothing in such a short time can happen with
such ease. I hope we can turn this the other way around. Well, maybe not to
best bossom-buddies level but a bit more than before. I take great pleasure
in my on-line community(ies), because here I can socialize when I have the
time for it, and the effort I put into it is of my own choosing.

I will be sad to see this list go, but it stands to reason that if it's not
used it's because there's no market. I rest my case and throw myself at the
benevolent feet of our list-mummy ;-)

Hugs to all
Helene

Hi Sharon!

I've been to your website, at seen the globes, key rings and cards.
They are really cool!!! Really love the faces of the characters on
the keyrings and cards! How do you make the key rings??

And about making business, I have a small e-shop business besides my
job as a computer programmer (!!). It's going quite well already, but
I plan to go further with it, but I have to make more advertising
material (cards, catalogues), which I want to send to magazines,
craft shops and so on. But thing takes time, so I have to be
patient :-) Also plan to make an international version, but again,
things takes time..

Hi Petra!

It's wonderful to hear about your passion for polymer clay, and also
to hear that the clay is getting still more popular in your part of
the world. And you're right that distance is a big factor, but I also
think that language is... On Yahoo, I have found french, spanish and
italian websites and forums regarding polymer clay, which we never
hear about, since we have the language problem, but they are doing
marvelous things!!! And I think it's a problem, especially in Europe,
where we have such a lot of different languages in a relatively small
place. I'm from Denmark, and since we are only 5 million citicens,
most of us speak/understand english and german quite good, and
there's also a lot of people whose able to speak/understand french.
That's why I have made the webring PolyClayEurope, since here people
don't have to speak, but can show their stuff, and after that, we
might start to speak - the best we can ;-)

enclosed in a recessed plastic key fob

I've tried selling to Craft Shops but with limited sucess. The prices they try
to sell my goods at is usually far too much and sales are poor. So I rarely get
repeat orders. I think this is due to having to compete with imported crafts
which they are able to sell at much lower prices, therefore making my things
seem expensive.

I find selling at Craft Fairs works best for me. But I'm working on a website.

Hi Evelyn

Yes (blush) to both.

If you can wait just a few more days, I've got a mosaic project in Georgia
Sargeant's new book. According to Amazon, it's due out 15 May, and here's a
link to it:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1564968693/qid%3D1021319256/202-656
8405-7707820

I haven't actually seen it yet myself, so I'm hoping it looks good!

The mosaic technique I use is much the same as Sue Heaser's, which I believe
is in at least two of her books (Polymer Clay Jewellery and Polymer
Clay Techniques, if I remember correctly).

Thanks for the kind words!

Margaret

PS Yes I will keep the list going!

Hi Sharon!

Thanks for your information! I have had my thoughts about craft shops
(that, like you said, it's to few money in it), so maybe I should
keep on with my own business, and try craft shows in stead. It must
also be an advantage, that you can choose the look/setup of your own
shop/selling place...

By the way - a silly question from a Dane - what is 'The League of

Seeing as I asked the question, it's only right that I should also
tell everyone what I'm up to!! Heeehee, can't keep me quiet for long.

BTW Margaret, don't you DARE close this list!!! It may be quiet, but
still worth having. It's THE only poly clay UK one about, and I
personally think that even if it's quiet, at least it is somewhere I
can ask or relate to what's going on elsewhere in the world other
than the US. It's great when people are trying to find the equivalent
of 'Future' or local whatever's. Not that I'm saying that the US ones
aren't also great, but it's no good asking where can I get 'Future'
or 'Fimo Soft' when the response is to go to your local Walmart! - if
you really don't want to do it anymore let me know.

Meanwhile - as for ME - I live just outside Poole in sunny Dorset
(haha, it's pouring with rain at the moment), by the coast. I'm a
mother of 2 - not quite such young ones anymore (19 and 14, but both
still at school), and as they get older I find I can clay more. One
of these days I'm gonna surprise everyone by having my own little
craft/gift shop (in my dreams!) Meanwhile I clay/make jewellery and
sell locally at craft fairs and supply a couple of local shops with
my goodies too. Keeps me out of mischief, I work hard for what I get
out of it monetary wise, but just about keep the level below which
I'd have to start paying taxes.

As to what I'm actually doing at the moment. Being very naughty and
not enthused to work lately so I'm not doing much. I have a lot of
stock at present so I'm not worried about that at the moment. But my
daughter has been ill so I'm too pre-occupied with her to worry about
claying at the moment. I can talk about clay, read about it, but
can't physically/mentally get down to it at the moment. Oh well.
Hopefully my daughter will be more 'sorted' in a few weeks and I'll
be able to concentrate more then.

Meanwhile keep all your fingers crossed for her, she has Crohn's
disease and has to have a Colonoscopy and a biopsy this Thursday
(basically they'll stick a camera up her and take out a bit to
examine - now that's more info than anyone wanted!) So if I'm not
about much you'll all know why. But we could both do with all your
good wishes and vibes being sent our way.

My Thursday morning chat at Polymer Clay Central is being cancelled
this week. But hopefully back to normal next week.
