DEMAND AN INQUEST INTO DUDLEY GEORGE'S DEATH
To help put on pressure for an Inquest, please copy the following letter,
modify as appropriate, sign and date it, and mail it off to Dr. Young, the
Coroner for the Province of Ontario. The Coalition for a Public Inquiry
into Ipperwash supports this campaign, which has been launched by Pierre
George and members of the Stoney Point Support Network.
Although an Inquest would not provide the full range of investigation and
answers that an Inquiry would allow, it would be helpful. It should, for
example, get to the bottom of key issues such as:
- why medical attention was not offered to Dudley George and most of the
other injured victims of the police abuse;
- what policy allowed for Dudley's siblings, Pierre and Carolyn, to be
ARRESTED at the hospital to which they had driven Dudley -- BEFORE Dudley
was taken into the hospital for treatment (they were later released, after
Dudley passed on, and no charges were laid);
- on what basis police interfered with Marcia Simon's (Dudley and Pierre's
aunt) telephone call asking for help, also taking her into custody at the
Forest OPP detachment for several hours and releasing her in the dark of
night by the side of the road;
- whether medical experts conclude that Dudley's live would have been saved
if the above-mentioned abusive state interventions had not happened.
Please notify Davin Charney at dcharney@... if you send Dr.
Young a letter. Here is a copy of the letter the Coalition for a Public
Inquiry has sent to Dr. Young:
Re: Inquest into the Death of Dudley George on September 6, 1995
Attention: Dr. James Young
Chief Coroneršs Office
26 Grenville Street
Toronto, Ontario, M7A 2G9
Dear Dr. Young:
As you are likely aware, considerable public interest has been generated
around the death of Dudley George of the Stoney Point First Nation. As of
this date, there remain significant unresolved questions regarding the
circumstances of his death.
On Friday, January 26, 2001, the Supreme Court of Canada upheld the
conviction and sentence of Kenneth Deane, the O.P.P. sergeant who shot
Dudley George. There are no outstanding criminal matters before the courts
pertaining to the death of Dudley George. Therefore, there are no legal
barriers to calling an inquest.
The Coroners Act requires that you determine whether the holding of an
inquest would serve the public interest. Furthermore, the Act requires that
you consider the desirability of the public being fully informed of the
circumstances of a death through an inquest. Given that more than 100
groups have called for a full public inquiry, there is demonstrated desire
amongst the public for more information on this matter (see attached list).
It is our understanding that an inquest would not address the same range of
issues as a Public Inquiry, but it would serve to answer some of the
significant questions pertaining to the death of Dudley George. An inquest
would determine how, and by what means the deceased came to his death. For
example, an inquest would examine the factors that lead to the death of
Dudley George, such as the absence of emergency services made available to
him after being shot 3 times.
At this time, we are formally requesting that you call an inquest into the
death of Dudley George.
