Mission
NCT-BAG promotes ethical fishing for the Bowfin (scientific name: Amia calva). The fish inhabits nearly 30 U.S. states and parts of Candada, and it is common in North Carolina’s freshwater fisheries from the Piedmont to the coastal plain. Many myths surround the Bowfin, and these lead anglers to mistakenly consider it a nuisance, invasive, or “trash” species.

NCT-BAG aims to reverse this trend and promote knowledge of the Bowfin that will lead to its recognition as one of the fiercest game fish in North America. In order to fulfill its mission, NCT-BAG promotes the responsible management of Bowfin fisheries as well as their scientific study. The group has donated specimens for scientific study, cleaned trash from popular Bowfin waters, and organized an annual Bowfin tournament. In addition, its members contribute to the Bowfin Anglers Group website and submit their qualifying Bowfin catches to the North Carolina Angler Recognition Program (NCARP).
