When I was checking out various Protestant denominations, Malachi Martin's accounts of his Catholic Faith in Hostage to the Devil and The Final Conclave impressed me enough to take a fresh look at Catholicism.
He certainly became known for his fervent defense of orthodoxy and traditional Catholicism in his later years.
While I will not pretend that this information is easy for my own Faith, during the sixties and seventies, Fr. Martin seems to have lived a scandalous life, assisting the treacherous American Jewish Committee's efforts to manipulate the Catholic Hierarchy, in conformity with its own sectarian objectives. He also promoted many liberal, and even heretical, opinions during this time, which is apparent from books he wrote, and from the reports of others.
I do not presume to judge Fr. Martin's soul. I hope that, at the end, he did conform to the best influences in his life, and attained to peace with God.
His best friend, the late Fr. Paul Wickens, FSSP, at least seems to have been a Faithful and a prayerful man of the Church. . .
Not all of the charges made against Fr. Martin are well established, and some may still prove to have been misinformed. Sadly, however, the harm he did to the church, and his bad habit of stretching the truth, seems to have gone far beyond what I previously had suspected:
The following is excerpted from Milt Rosenberg's Sept. 20, 1996 program with Fr. Martin Chicago's WGN Radio:
"Milt Rosenberg of WGN in Chicago interviews Malachi Martin. Earlier that day, Rosenberg had been reading through Edmund Wilson's memoirs ("The Sixties", 1993, Farrar Straus and Giroux) and became puzzled by what he read. Below is the audio file and the transcript of the exchange that follows:Milt Rosenberg of WGN in Chicago interviews Malachi Martin.
