When was "Tom Bombadil goes a-boating" written? Did its Shire

LOTR got from the older Tom Bombadil poem?)

According to what I read, most of the poems in "Adventures" were written many years before, when he was teaching at Leeds and shortly after he returned to Oxford; some were rewritten to harmonize them with Middle Earth.

It's hard to be specific
Tolkien wrote, then changed a few words and rewrote, and wrote it all out
again
So his son Christopher has actually published more "books by Tolkien" than
his father ever did!

DUSTED OFF FROM THE ARCHIVES...

When the cast were promoting the first Lord Of The Rings film in Cannes Viggo Mortensen perfected his tortured yet kooky persona (which I like to call: being a twat) by refusing to wear shoes, what with him being so intense, man.

Anyway, him and Sean Bean are standing outside the hotel having a cigarette and, hey, whaddya know, Viggo is barefoot.

He finishes his fag, chucks it to the ground but – OH NO! – he's got bare feet. Sean Bean puts his be-shoed foot down on the smouldering stub and says, in true Sheffield brogue: "For fook's sake Viggo, get some fooking shoes."

Orcs and Goblins are like ARod vs Eddie Cleaver. Orcs from Mordor are
like Orcs from Moria on steroids. Sauron has the biggest and baddest
assaulting Minas Tirith (Orcs from Moria) while the minor leagues
(Orcs from Moria) are guarding the outskirts of the battle. Ignoring
the Balrog, of course. (Did he really have wings?) Hah!

Goblins are little dudes, Orcs are the big and nasty dudes.

25th March is Tolkien Reading Day!

Tolkien Reading Day was set up to encourage people to read some of Tolkien’s stories at school or university, in reading groups, or as a family; the theme for 2009 is

“Journeys & Destinations.”

Reading Day is an opportunity for grownups and children to read together and share their thoughts about journeys in Tolkien’s works and the places the travellers are going to. You can read an old favourite or maybe discover new ones.

Ideas for exploring Tolkien’s books together are available online and in hard copy

www.tolkiensociety.org/ed/index.html

or

 www.tolkiensociety.org/ed/tolkienreadingday.html

J.R.R. Tolkien’s books appeal to all ages and readers worldwide find pleasure, entertainment and deep significance in his work.

Reading together is fun, for both children and adults, and reading on a theme stimulates good conversation and vocabulary development. There is much more to Tolkien than “The Lord of the Rings” though. Families or library reading groups can enjoy various stories from either the well known, the humorous adventures of “Farmer Giles of Ham” who takes on giants, knights, and dragons, the mystical journey of an artist in “Leaf By Niggle”, or the travels and travails of the dog “Roverandom”.

Schools can contact the Society for education packs, bookmarks and posters. Members of the public, libraries, or reading groups wishing to hold an event near to rather than on the 25th can contact the Society for free posters to help with publicising their event.

Requests for posters or queries regarding this Press Release should be addressed to:

Ian Collier, Publicity Officer, 22 Oaklands Road, Wolverhampton, WV3 0DS UK

e-mail publicity AT tolkiensociety DOT org

Launched in 2003 the reading day event has sparked interest in reading and reading groups across several nations and ages from Primary schoolchildren to University students and library users of all ages. Hence the circulation of this release to the media, educational press and county library services. 25th March has significance to Tolkien’s readers, as it is the day of the Downfall of Sauron at the conclusion of the ‘War of the Ring’ in “The Lord of the Rings.”

I was curious as to whether anyone has read 'The New Shadow' in book
XII of HoME and what they thought of it. I found it very interesting,
but I didn't know quite what to make of it, especially considering the
intro to the story where JRR Tolkien said he wasn't going to write
anything about the Fourth Age.

Well, it is set 105 years after the ring was destroyed. THe main
character, an old man named Borlas, was one of Faramir's guards, so
he was alive back then. He has a discussion with a younger man
(Saelon) about morality and good versus evil. They get to talking
about a character whose name, Herumor, makes the older man fearful.
Saelon tells Borlas to meet him later if he wants to learn more about
what this Herumor guy does.
The next day he's still worrying about his conversation while he is
out. THe story ends when he gets home with the line, "Suddenly he
smelt it, or so it seemed, though it came as it were from from within
outwards to the sense: he smelt the old Evil and knew it for what it
was."

Anyways, it is worth a read if you see it, despite my rough summary.
It also interested me that, according to the book, he wrote two
drafts of the story, despite saying that he didn't want to write
about the forth age. "his [Aragorn's] wars would have little interest
after the overthrow of Sauron; but that almost certainly a
restlessness would appear about then, owing to the (it seems)
inevitable boredom of Men with good: there would be secret societies
practising dark cults, and 'orc-cults' among adolescents." (J.R.R.
Tolkien).

Streets in Wincanton, Somerset (UK) have been named after the streets of Ankh-Morpork, the city which forms the backdrop to most of Terry Pratchett’s fantasy novels.

Are there any towns out there with Tolkien addresses?
