Description
Learn Tibetan language with new words or phrases every day. I've been on hiatus for a few years, but I'm coming back with fresh motivation after a trip to India and a strong feeling that Tibetans need a cultural and religious voice.
Buddhist psychology is extraordinarily helpful in modern life, and should be accessible to all. Tibetan language is precious because many Buddhist texts have been preserved in Tibetan that have been lost or forgotten in other languages. The Tibetan community in exile works hard to fit in to the culture of the rest of the world, and we have to try to preserve theirs before these teachings disappear.
I'll be using words and phrases from colloquial and Buddhist sources, and again appreciate help from more experienced list members.
For beginners, there are files in the yellow bar to the left of the page with examples of the Tibetan script and some sound files. There are also cool links or bookmarks there with Tibetan and Buddhist resources including a radio show and dictionaries. Free software is available for converting the ACIP Tibetan transcription to Tibetan script so you can practice reading. It comes with Tibetan for Windows from http://members.aol.com/tib4win/ (also free). I find I like to type up text using Wylie transcription and then convert it to ACIP, then Tibetan script. That way, I have the Roman letter version as well as the Tibetan script but I only need to type it once.
Welcome to the list, feel free to browse past messages, and good luck with your studies!
