Greetings,

It just occurred to me that folks might be wondering what has
happened to This Day in Ancient History. Well, it has moved! It is
now part of my blog which is devoted to Classical subjects at:

http://www.atrium-media.com/rogueclassicism/

This Day in Ancient History is part of the sunrise update (i.e. done
when I get up) and there is probably a bunch of other stuff posted
there on a daily basis which should be of interest to fans of ancient
history. The Yahoo site is serving as a temporary archive until I can
finish putting together something more permanent at my website.

Please come and check it out!

Salve,

First of all, apologies to all members of the list(s) for the
quietness over the past few months -- I've been through just a
hellish year teaching a grade 6/7 split with a principal who
did not make things any easier (very long story; it appears to
culminate in the development of ulcers ... waiting test results
on that). I've also had problems over the past two weeks with
my ISP and/or Yahoo (the latter was not letting me post to my
   own lists!).

The good news is, I shall be resuming my announcement lists in the next
few days and will have a bit of backlog to catch up on, so
there might be a flood of sorts. I realize, though, that some
folks might have forgotten they are even on these lists, so I
won't open the gates for a couple of days in order to give you
   a chance to unsubscribe.

dm

PS Ancient World on Television will resume this weekend
PPS This Day in Ancient History will resume Monday, July 8 (as of

Apologies for the non-delivery of TDIAH for the past week; the
service should resume this week some time in it's former
one-per-day format with a couple of day's lead time (to allow
teachers/profs who use the thing to do whatever they want to do
with them) ...

Regifugium -- a festival which didn't really happen on "February
24" but actually six days before the kalends of March, which was
usually during a period of intercalation. Roman writers suggested
this festival was a celebration of the expulsion of the Tarquins,
although modern scholars have their doubts. Whatever the case,
on this day the Rex Sacrorum would offer some sort of sacrifice
in the Comitium and then run away as fast as he could

Traditional end of the Roman year (followed by a period of
intercalation)

Terminalia -- a festival in honour of Terminus, the divinity who
presided over boundaries. In Rome itself, Terminus had a shrine
within the Temple of Jupiter beneath an opening in the roof because,
it is said, when they were building the Temple of Jupiter, Terminus
refused to move. What happened in the city is unclear, but the
rustic version of the festival involved. At boundary stones,
farmer families would gather and build a turf altar; a fire would
be built and one of the younger members of the family would throw
grain in the fire three times. Others offered other things like
honeycombs and wine, then a sheep or pig would be sacrificed and
a feast would follow.

Parentalia possibly comes to and end with the festival of Caristia,
which was a sort of 'kiss and make up' festival. The idea was that
people had made peace with their dead, so now it was right to bring
to an end any quarrels they were having with living members of their
family. There was usually a big family reunion type banquet and
worship was given to the Lares.

Parentalia possibly comes to an end with the festival of Feralia,
during which sheep were sacrificed to the dead; I'm not sure whether
the rites mentioned by Ovid (Fasti 2.565 ff) in connection with
the Feralia have anything to do with festival or not (suggestions
welcome!).

==ante diem xv kalendas martias==
Parentalia (day 3) -- the period for appeasing the dead continued

Lupercalia -- annual ritual of uncertain (and perhaps evolving
purpose) run by a pair of special collegia of priests. On this
day, the members of the collegia would meet at a sacred cave called
the Lupercal (on the Palatine) where Romulus and Remus had supposedly
been suckled by the she-wolf. There, the ceremony would begin with
the sacrifice of goatts and a dog and offerings of sacred cakes which had
been prepared by the Vestal Virgins. Some of the older members of
the priesthood would then wipe the sacrificial knife on the foreheads
of some of the younger members. Others would then wipe away the
blood with wool that had been dipped in milk. The 'wipees' were
supposed to laugh at this point. Then the gang would cut up the
skins of the goats and make them into long strips, which they would
put on somehow. They would then run wildly around the Palatine,
whipping people -- especially women -- with the strips of goatskin.

FOR THE RECORD: I have not found any evidence of the oft-mentioned
(in the popular press) practice of the Romans pulling "billets" out
of a jar to choose a girlfriend/marriage partner/whatever for the
day and/or until the next Lupercalia.

44 B.C. -- Marcus Antonius offers a crown to Julius Caesar, who
declines it.

Antoninus Pius and wife of the emperor Marcus Aurelius

Parentalia (day 1) -- a festival for honouring/appeasing the dead
began on this day with a number of signs: temples were closed,
altars did not have fires burn on them, people were forbidden to
get married, and magistrates set down the trappings of their office.

Fornacalia (day 1) -- this was actually a "feriae conceptivae", which
means that it probably wasn't always held on the same day. Originally,
it was a feast of the curiae (an early division of the Roman people)
which also seems to have involved a sort of banquet for the gods,
although scholars are unsure which gods were specifically honoured.
Then again, Ovid claims that rural folk would pray to a divinity
called Fornax.

==kalendae februariae==
Rites in honour of Juno Sospita: Juno Sospita was originally
worshipped in Lanuvium, where she seems to have had started out
as a fertility goddess of some sort and evolved into a warrior
protectrix of the city. When Lanuvium was granted Roman citizenship
in 338 B.C., the cult was also given special status and place under
the control of the pontifices, who would annually perform a sacrifice
to her. There also seems to have been a ritual whereby blindfolded
girls would enter her grove to feed barley cakes to the sacred
snakes therein. If the cakes were accepted, the girls were proven
to be virgins and the fertility for the upcoming year was guaranteed.
Which of these rituals -- or perhaps both -- took place on this day
isn't clear in my sources.

Rites in honour of Elernus: Elernus (or Helernus, or may Avernus) is
another one of those very ancient Roman deities about which we know
little, as can be seen by the variations in name. He appears to have
been some type of underworld divinity (perhaps being honoured with
the sacrifice of a black ox by the pontifices).
