I should have, David, as that is the only required text at The Acting
Studio. For 20 years, now.
Michael S. (RIP) and I go back many years.... we did a couple of
decades.... we did some joint acting workshops about casting and
auditions.
What I like about "Audition" is that it is compatible with the
Stanislavski system, at least the version I learned from Robert Lewis
and Stella Adler.
All actors at my studio learn and work on Shurtleff's 12 guideposts,
which comprises about a third of the text.
And yes, it's text analysis, but it's truly geared to the choices actors
can and should make in an audition. Including the audition for stage or
film where you may not necessarily have the time and opportunity to read
the script from cover to cover.
Michael's 12 guideposts are partially analytical, partially intuitive.
A nice blend. For actors.
Somewhere in my files, I have the "Reader's Digest" version of the 12
guideposts.... summarized in two pages. If I can find it (it's on an old
computer)..... I'll share it with the group.
Break a leg,
Bill
