Description

WELCOME - This is a Colonial Newsletter Foundation (CNLF) electronic Special Interest Group (eSIG)

This eSIG is a CNLF iterative Research and in-depth Study group dedicated to the History of the First U. S. Mint and includes the technology in use at the mint, the equipment - much of which originated in the "Colonial" era and which was also imported into the Mint from overseas sources - as well as the personnel and associated events, and also includes the coinage.

Our time-span of interest - in general - encompasses the years 1792 through 1800. 1792 was a year of Patterns and organization - the Mint formally opened in 1793 and the official U.S. coinage began at that time.

The very best book available for source material on the First Mint is that by Frank H. Stewart - "History of the First United States Mint - Its People and Its Operations" Privately Printed 1924. (Copyright, 1924 Frank H. Stewart Electric Company). Originals are very difficult to locate but the Quarterman reprint of 1974 is usually available at a reasonable cost on the used book market in the United States. If such a thing as a textbook exists on the First United States Mint - THIS IS IT!
