That's a book I keep meaning to read, Iron Lake.
Chemo -- I'm glad you were able to have something to distract you. I know from
taking my dad to chemo years ago what a difficult time that is.

Book can sometimes be amazing tools to get you through a rough time or to just
make a long day bearable. I remember going with my mom to her chemo treatments
the first few times. It was a new building and they knew what they were doing
when they built it. Most of the large treatment rooms looked out on the large
pond between the buildings. A pleasant view for a not-always-pleasant
experience. But the first time I went there, I remember I had the first book by
William Kent Krueger, Iron Lake. So instead of thinking about where I was the
whole time, I got to spend a couple hours in Northern Minnesota.

I'm delighted to hear you're cancer-free! Good for you.
The joy of reading - one of them - is an experience such as you've described.
What a good friend you have, too.

I was reading the books while I was doing radiation for breast cancer (I am
cancer-free!!) I would be in the waiting room, waiting for my turn, and when
they'd call me I'd say "No! Not now! This is a really good part." After my
surgery, when I didn't feel like reading, I had a friend who loved me enough to
read to me. RC sure made the whole experience a lot easier for me.

Well, three years ago for the Watchman, it was the middle of March, and it
snowed on me on my drive up to Chicago. So, hopefully it will just be cold for
this trip. And of course when we got there, RC had to rub it in by saying he'd
just talked to his wife, and it was 70 degrees at home.
[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Amen to that! My drive to Dayton will be a bit longer....

I went to Naperville the last two times RC was there. Long drive but it was the
closest he came to where I live. I can't make it to Naperville this time anyway,
so I'm thrilled that RC will be close enough (Dayton) that I can go and get home
again in such a short period of time. It will only be about an hour and a half
drive. And I've been there before, for a Lee Child signing; it's a nice venue.
Too bad it will be the dead of winter. Let's all send out vibes for no snow &
ice that week.

I can make it this year. It's a bit of a drive, but I made it for The Watchman
and it was definitely worth my time.

A good friend in Ohio sent me their ARC of The First Rule, and all I can say is
that it is well, well worth the wait. One of the best things I've read all this
year, bar none. Since I'll be getting my own autographed copy when RC makes his
L.A. book stops, I'm willing to send it to the first Craisie Club member who
contacts me (macsurferx02 at yahoo dot com) with that request. All I ask is that
you pass it forward to family/friends who appreciate the series (naturally, it's
not one I recommend to first time Cole-Pike readers). Thanks. --

I agree with you, Naomi. After thinking about it for more than a day, I'm
decidedly mixed about it all. To the good, no one (with the possible exception
of his editor) knows the story better. RC has a good voice and he does have some
experience. He did the reading on The Forgotten Man abridged audiobook, and as
pointed out by Julie E., on the abridged Hostage. James Daniels performed the
unabridged versions for both of those Brilliance Audio audiobooks. However...
RC is doing all versions for BA, here (unabridged and abridged). For the first
time, there will be no professional narrator for this U.S. release.
A narrator can make or break an audiobook (and the audio experience of the
listener). But a good, experienced audiobook narrator (someone who's made it
their profession) knows how to use his/her trained voice to augment the story
telling (besides just reading). Many are quite talented in creating different
voices/inflections for individual characters in a book. Regardless of their
gender, they can move across male or female characters with ease and make the
listener believe it's man or a woman speaking. As well, more than a few are
trained actors who can emote correctly for a scene being read when it calls for
it (and know when a little is better than a lot). Does the author have the range
to create in the listeners minds those distinct characters in that now familiar
universe (for series fans and audiobook fans)?
I have no doubt, by an early review I've read by a blogger I trust very much
<http://drowningmachine.blogspot.com/2009/11/review-first-rule-by-robert-crais.h\
tml>, that this is going to be a great novel and an excellent contribution to
the series we all love. I just don't have an answer for any of the questions
I've raised, as yet. So, this may be the one book that I read (devour), first,
before going on to the audiobook. This is just my opinion on the matter, and I
don't expect others to share it. But, yes, Naomi - for this audio fan, it's an
iffy proposition for this one. Thanks.--

Thanks for the link. It's very .. iffy, isn't it? At times RC sounds right and
at other times it sounds as if he's just reading, not telling the story.
I love The Forgotten Man. I have the unabridged cds. After LAR, it may be my
favorite RC book. May be it's time to take it out & listen again.

Thanks for the link. It's very .. iffy, isn't it? At times RC sounds right and
at other times it sounds as if he's just reading, not telling the story.
I love The Forgotten Man. I have the unabridged cds. After LAR, it may be my
favorite RC book. May be it's time to take it out & listen again.

FYI: since the audiobook <http://www.audioboo kstand.com/ product.asp?
Titleid=17336> comes out the same day as the new Joe Pike book, I wanted to find
out who Brilliance Audio would use as its reader. I was more than a bit
surprised that RC himself will be doing the narration (and I confirmed this
directly with Brilliance, today).

That's amazing video. I feel so badly for those who've lost their homes - and
to an arsonist?

turned out to be the biggest brush fire in L.A. County history:

I'm in Placerita Cyn off east of the 14 fwy.
One of the young men in our small development is a volunteer firefighter has
been fighting this blaze. He said the wind is shifting every 60 & he thinks
it'll hit our canyon in a day or two if there aren't major changes.
Last November's Sylmar fire that went through the mobile home park came over the
ridge into our canyon of less than 40 homes. Firefighter stayed on 1st level of
our home because we're in middle of development. They were great guys &
comforting.
It my come close as it often does but I have great faith in our firefighters to
keep it safe.

All of you are most kind. We're no where near to these, but it's got everyone's
attention. As spread out as the city and county of L.A. is, it's amazing that
most people, personally or via work, know of someone who is being affected by
the fires (through threat or evacuation). Thank you all for your sentiments.
