Barb,
Are the mills open to the public and where are they?
You say you may open a shop in Stone mountain, does
that mean Atlanta area? I've always heard mills sell
very inexpensively but have never had a chance to see
for myself. thanx

Barb,

I'm interested in sari silks in a red or dark red. However, I'm pretty game for
solid colored silks as well. Can't wait til your website is up and running.

Thanks,
Dana

Linda, there are "outlets" that sell to the public. If
you have a truck and can buy 100lbs or more at one
time (some are more), you can purchase from the mills.
There are mills scattered across the US.

Ok, I a silly person,

Sometime ago, one one of the group pages that I's on, someone posted
a picture of a 1580's-1600's Flag fans. I'm not sure that this is the
group. I lost the pic. I though I save it but know such luck. If by
chance this is the group, would someone re-post that pic for me. It
would sure make me a happy camper.
Thank you
Thalia

Well, It is now nailed down that I and Lorraine will be in London June
6-10 then on the 10th go to Bath overnight, and return late tuesday
11th to London again through the 18th. So if the former History of
Fashion and Dress class folks in the UK, or other interested parties
want to converge on Bath, the 10th-11th of June is the time. Does
anyone want to do this with us? We will be staying at the Georges
hotel in the center of town the night of the 10th. I've also been
thinking of Monday June 17th for the day trip to Northampton Museum
and Art Gallery (Shoes). Any place else for a convergence? We will
also naturally be doing the V&A, the Fan Museum in Greenwich, The
Museum of London, The British Museum and other suitable sites of
worship, and can probably bump these places to a convenient day if
others want to meet at one of these places to hobnob with fellow
wizards.

There is a really great museum of hats in Stockport. Just a short distance
from Manchester. Definately worth seeing if you are into millinery.

I have a burn-test kit that I'd like to sell, if anyone is interested.  I bought it for a class, and we never used it, and the university book store won't buy it back because they like to make a profit off the students.  None of the samples have been used, and the package was only opened in order for me to list what's inside.  There are 20 fiber samples (email me for the complete list) and a chart indicating what each fiber will do a) when approaching flame, b) when in flame, c) after removal from flame, d) what the ash looks like, and e) the ordor emitted.

I don't recall exactly what I paid for the kit (only that my total book bill was over $300 and so far I've only gotten $18 back) but I'd like to try and sell it for $15, that is shipping included.  Make me an offer if that sounds too steep.  Email me at SiebelSan@... if interested.  Thanks :-)

Not exactly a costuming question, but related... I am making a couple flags
for my pirate group (1690's-1731's). I've learned that most flags nowadays
are made from nylon. What fabric(s) were used back then us to make flags?
Any clues would be appreciated...
Thx

Chris,

I was a propmaker here in Hollywood for several years. The raised
webs on the movie costume were, in fact, made of foam rubber. They
were individually hand-glued onto the finished suit to create the
look you see. The rubber stretches with the movements of the body,
but inevitably, pieces are bound to come unglued. There is a great
interview on the Sony.com site with the costume designer. He talks
about the process used to create the Spidey suit. Basically, the
solid color fabric was chosen, then the small comb-pattern was
silkscreened onto it; the pieces were cut and sewn to make the suit;
the suit was then "muscle-enhanced"; next, the muscles were
highlighted by airbrushing the contours of the muscles; the foam
rubber webbing was applied to the suit; finally, the entire suit
was "weathered" - meaning it was darkened and beaten up to look used
and aged (this is done with various paints, sandpaper, etc).

Creating your own costume similar to the movie suit is certainly a
feasible task. I am planning on making my own for Halloween this
year. But keep in mind, rumors circulated about the cost of each
suit (over 20 were made for the film) - I heard an estimated $100,000
per suit. This may sound outrageous (and it is), but considering how
important the look of the character is, it's easy to see where the
money went. If you are interested in knowing where you can find foam
rubber supplies and other materials, let me know. I am going to be
doing some research in the coming weeks/months. Good luck with your
costume.

I'm happy to say that the site that had free patterns for various
Islamic women's clothing online is now back at
a new location http://www.modestclothes.com/patterns.htm it would
appear that it is getting housed by the nifty
http://www.modestclothes.com site that has links to modest dress sites
of several religions (mostly Islamic, but it also includes Christian
sites, and sites with no religious affiliation that sell things like
longer than usual shorts and bathing suits, etc.) While I personally
have no modesty to speak of, these links are amazingly handy for
reasearch and shopping for stuff I like for myself like long sleeve
Salwar Kamiz suits that are nice indoor wear here in Alaska.

I'm in such a bind! I'm working on my first solo project, and not only am I
a day from when I need the dress done, but I just don't understand what the
pattern is asking me to do?!?

I've completed the bodice, the lining, even the skirt, with no problem. But
I'm stuck on the sleeves.

I'm hoping one of you has either worked this pattern, or has it at home, and
can help explain what I need to do.

It's Butterick 3011. A Victorian style gown.

Please...I'm stuck on the bottom of the 1st column, 2nd page under the
sleeve section. It says:

For facing, turn in seam allowance on notched edge of two sleeve band
sections; press. Trim seam allowance to 3/8".

> Not a problem. I did that.

Stitch sleeve band facing to sleeve band, leaving notched edge open. Trim.

Cute; viewed on Butterick.com , don't have the pattern
but it looks like there is a lace overlay, would you
need to sewittothe wrong side of the fabric? The
directions should illustrate that. Then you
wouldneedtoattach the sleve band to the facing AFTER
it is attached tothe sleve. It looks like lace with a
lace trim which you would attach tothe notched edge
and hand stitch or topstitch, what is the nextstep?
Butterick also has a help line "800" number on the
directions, also look at the beginning of the pattern
and it will show how "wrong" and "right" side of
fabric is illustrated which may help clarify things
for you. Tess

I dont have the pattern so I'm just guessing.  Is the sleeve band similar to a cuff?  If so, it sounds like you're to sew 3 sides of the band to the facing, right sides together, leaving open the side that you sew to the sleeve. Then you would turn the band right side out and stitch the open seam to the sleeve. Does this make sense?

Thanks for everyone's replies. I really do appreciate it.

The sleeve is poofy, for a lack of a better word. It's gathered, then the sleeve band is supposed to fit on the bottom, from what I can tell. I understand that facing is to give a finished look to a raw edge. What I'm having a problem with right now is 'where' to sew the two pieces together. I know...probably something simple I'm overlooking. But I think my brain melted about an hour ago. ;o) Do I fit the sleeve band into the facing? Or do I just sew the two together as is?

Probably not explaining well...sorry. Leave it to me to choose the advanced pattern, make it through the entire dress, and then not be able to figure out the sleeve bands. LOL

<P> Ok, if it is just a gathered sleve attachment to a
cuff, then you have to attach the gathered edge to the
cuff and facing you can then hand hem the facing to
the wrong side of sleve. You can actually sew the cuff
facing on at any time , just match the appropriate
notches....it should turn out fine...you probably have
to hand stitch the cuff facing to the seam allowance
where the sleve and cuff meet.

Many thanks to everyone who has replied on or off list to my pleading. I've
been a part of this group for awhile now, and tonight makes me remember why.
You're all really wonderful, and a great help.

As for the dress...it won't be done in time for tomorrow, but I will have it
done for next month, when I can wear it again. The good thing is, when I
finally get it done, I can sew all the easy patterns without a problem. Next
stop, Elizabethan gowns! Joking...maybe 5 years from now. ;o) After my brain
reforms from the stress of this project.

Again, all my thanks and love go out to you all!

Angelica

There is the address - check it out! Some beautiful
detailed pictures of the costumes! Definitely worth
looking at!

heh heh, looks like you all are on the ball and found the
site, lol. I plan to make just a quick 'n dirty skirt,
probably not as nicely fitted as Amidala's. I think I may
just take a simple pattern I have and extend the back into
a train. I am going to attempt to make a corset in 6 days,
but if I can't do it, a friend is lending me a gothy
pleather one that, while not entirely screen-accurate, will
work. Whoo, tomorrow I shop for fabric!
