If you have been having problems accessing The Costumer's Manifesto this week,
go to http://63.100.111.49 instead, where I have temporarily moved the site.
I'm having problems with switching servers, and my old server
company is trying to hold my domain for ransom, so until I get InterNIC to grasp
the fact that I am the sole owner of the domain, and I want it moved, you will
need to access the site through http://63.100.111.49/

Um, ok, I know this sounds obvious, but if the event
doesn't cater to the type of people who would be interested
in your stuff, don't bother going. Story time:

A friend of mine who was hosting a craft-type show invited
me to join in and set up a table with my med/ren costumes.
The show featured stuff like candles/insense, new age
books, spirit stuff, psycic things like that. The scenerio
would have offered some interest, but no real hard-core
people who are seriously into the faires. I didn't make a
single sale or take a single order. This is 6 months ago
and I haven't heard back from a single business-card
recipient.
Then, a few weeks ago, I went to the edinboro games
and made a killing. The people at that event were the type
who go to other similar events. I am being kept very busy
now making chemises, bodices, tights, kilts, and medieval
wedding gowns - all that generated from being at an event
with a high content of truly interested people. I didn't
make that very clear, but there is a difference between
polite, curious interest and actual buying interest.

Another thing, be prepared for anything - weather if you'll
be outside, transportation of yourself and the goods, who
you'll be sharing space with, bad sale days when you dont
even break even, much less go away with gas money (our
minimum goal), the attitudes of people you are working
with, the attitudes of people you are selling
too...anything.
Don't be stiff - haggle if you need to - I can't afford
not to sometimes. People will buy more when they think
they are getting a deal, so come up with all sorts of
specials (I give discounts when complete outfits are sold
together).
When selling garb/costumes/clothing, if you can get the
people into the clothes, it does wonders in convincing them
to buy. Offer to let them try things, touch, play. Then
tell them how great they look in that kilt or gown, how
that sword is just the right size for them, how this or
that object or piece of clothing would complete the
look....just flatter them!
And you can always (provided you are female) get big
strong guys to help you if you smile sweetly and let them
know how short handed you are. We got two big kilted men
to carry ALL our wares for us, including the spinning wheel
and three big trunks of clothing.

Um, thats all I can think of now. I am not very good with
lectural monologues. I do better with specific questions.

Maybe not something to post to the group, but I was concerned you may not be able to receive email at costumes.org.

Teehee, thankfully I haven't had to deal with her mother
yet...But seriously! Brides are insane! She calls me
every other day to check up on progress, and last time she
came in for a fitting, she complained that part of the gown
didn't look EXACTLY like the picture and wants a complete
do-over (never mind that it won't look much different than
it does now!). AAAAHH! If I wasn't so poor I'd tell her
to bugger off, but ::sigh:: I'll probably be exactly the
same when I get married.

Hello all!

Felt ambitious this afternoon and made a new Medieval
Celtic dress. This dress has a periwinkle-blue bodice that
laces in the front and at the shoulders with silver
eyelets, and a very full gathered skirt made of cotton
(looks like wool!) plaid. I am not sure if the plaid is an
authentic family tartan, but it is checks of white and
shades of blue with golden yellow lines. Very beautiful
plaid, not at all garish. I'll try my best to get a
picture online if anyone is interested. This gown is not
yet hemmed - I will hem to your specifications. The bodice
is fully lined and the entire gown is made of 100% cotton.
There is only one raw edge on this dress (Where the skirt
joins the bodice) and it is finished off with a zig-zag
stitch.

I will sell this dress for $60 or offer. It is designed to
be worn with a full-length chemise. If desired, I'll make
one for you to go with this dress for $30. If interested,
please contact me at PalaisGarnier@....

Thanks!
Jessie

Hey all--

Hope someone can help me! :)

I'm in a real bind... I'm looking for about 4 1/2
yards of wool in a moss green color (as seen in the
cloak on this webpage:
http://www.greycatdesigns.bigstep.com/catalog.html)

I've found something similar for $15.00 a yard, which
was more than I was hoping to pay. Any thoughts as to
where I might could find this particular color?

Thanks bunches!

You need to trot over to my web page, www.etiquettehell.com, and get some
relief. Perhaps your bridezilla is not quite as bad others enshrined in
the web page. Under the "Etiquette Humor " category is the real life
story of bridesmaids' dresses gone terribly awry. (Tara, your link to the
"Titanic Dress" story on the Costumers' Manifesto web page is incorrect, btw.)

I don't sew for weddings so I have no way to empathize with you but I am
gearing up to make three more Elizabethan/1620's Pilgrim costumes. I
nearly ripped my hair out last year trying to fit the patterns to real life
people to achieve that tight fit of lined Elizabethan doublets.

For the person looking for a moss green wool substitute, I made the above
mentioned late Elizabethan garments from a polyester blend fabric at
WalMart that looked exactly like light wool but only cost $7.00 a yard. I
used a dark forest green for one skirt but they may have that fabric in
other shades of green as well.

Aw jeez, knew I was forgetting something! It was made to
fit a size 8, but because it laces, it will fit a size
6-10. Sorry bout that! I'll try to post a picture on

hmmmmmmm, what kind of answer is safest? HA!

Actually, it's the name of the band I'm in - we have 3 singers who
all switch off lead, 2 girls & a guy, kinda like the Mommas & the
Poppas - hence the Triangle.

The rest of the inspiration I'll save until I know y'all better... ;-)

Hi!
I have found that Baer Fabrics in Louisville, Ky. are great for having a
lot of colors of just about everything. They send out swatches and I think
that I only paid for swatches the first time I used them after that they
never charged for the service again. Their phone number is 1-800-769-7776.
Their prices are not inexpensive but they almost always have what you want.
By the way, $15.00 a ydl for wool is really not all that expensive when
pendleton wool runs about $30.00 a yd. I don't like paying any more than I
have to either so a sale is the best I can usually do. Hope the number is a
help. Beck

The bridesmaid who doesn't really want to be in the wedding and therefore
makes everything difficult (hates the dress, doesn't pay the deposit on
time, doesn't show for fittings until the day before the wedding...need I go
on?)is high on my list.

-Laura

Not necessarily...I work with alot of brides and 9 out
of 10 are great. Of course, I think it depends on the
type of wedding you are planning. Modern brides are a
bitch, but I do period weddings and every one of my
brides have been great (and yes, I've done more that
2). When you get into that situation, you need to
stand firm and let them understand that you are the
seamstress. You are the professional here.

I've also discovered that not answering the phone
helps tremendously....

I have a "policy" that I have the brides sign when I
agree to sew their weddings. It basically states that
I make fittings as convient as possible, but if the
wearer does not participate in the fittings, I am not
responsible for the fit of the garment. It save me
hassle in the long run in dealing with pains in the
butt...

This one wants a renaissance gown made of heavy velvet.
Ten bucks says she'll complain it's too heavy after the
dress is finished.
