Subject: Re: Decipher Numerical Pattern Sizes!

It's actually fairly simple, once you understand the system, but before I got
used to picking pattern sizes, I bought the wrong size on a few occasions.
First off, remember that pattern size does not necessarily equate to clothing
sizes (especially since designers can arbitrarily claim an outfit to be a
certain size, when ten or twenty years ago, an outfit with those same
measurements would have been sized differently (a size 0 versus a size 4, as an
example).

In the case of this specific pattern (and most pattern-makers tend to use the
same scale throughout their product line, so this chart should, theoretically,
hold true for the entire Butterick line), pattern size 8 produces an item that
would fit an individual with a bust measurement of 31.5" and a waist of 24".
Pattern size 16 would fit me (I'm a skinny guy)--bust size 38 and waist size 30.

So, take your bust measurement and your waist measurement, and that will tell
you what size pattern you need for yourself (if you're making it for someone
else, naturally you want their measurements)...if your body proportions are such
that your bust needs one pattern size and your waist needs another, you can
either make the garment in the larger size and tailor down appropriately
(generally not too difficult), or transition from one size to the other when
cutting out the pattern (not difficult, if you know what you're doing).

I found this via a Google search: http://sewing.patternreview.com/Patterns/21481
<- you have to be registered to read the reviews, but it looks like this is a
robe pattern that could double as a womens angel-wing dress. I would lean away
from this as a man's costume except for the concept of wizard's robes...

There is also this:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/35587759/medieval-gothic-cloak-hood-cape-sewing

I think this eBay listing clears up the sizing a bit more:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Butterick-4050-Men-and-Womens-Wizard-Witch-Cape-pattern-\
XS-S-M-/160888899851

The numbers you listed are standard US sizes and measurements that I'm pretty
sure correspond to the XS-S-M and then L-XL ranges. If you're making for a man,
ask him his t-shirt size.

(Especially when most sites wanted quite a lot of money for them!) Anyway, this
website asks me to choose between two sets of patterns and I have NO idea which
set of number ranges to choose between, as these ranges don't seem to be listed
anywhere on the pattern package itself (they have a scanned JPG of the pattern
itself. The ranges are: 8/18 and 20/26. The only data through which one may
hope to interpret these choices is:

Well, if you want fiber optics fabric that is a non-reflective material that
transmits and emits light through fiber optic fibers connected to LED
lights, then it's called Luminex. Their site is
http://www.luminex.it/inglese/idea.php
Their head office is based in Italy, but they have an international market
headed by LumiGram in France. Their online store is
http://www.lumigram.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=1 and this site has several
catalogues available to dowload. Bear in mind that if you are based in the US,
you will need to consider extra shipping time when ordering. Yes, you may wash
the garment gently by hand, provided you remove the battery box. Details on care
are at http://www.lumigram.com/catalog/page5.php. Textiles are also available
from Philips at
http://www.lighting.philips.com/main/application_areas/luminous-textile/ but
these appear to be mostly lighted fabric panels. All of this stuff can be
controlled from an outside source, giving you the fun option of fabric that not
only lights up, but changes with the music!

Now, if you want glow in the dark fabric, then you have several options. You may
want to paint it with glow paint. Coolglow has several kinds
http://coolglow.com/1/51/51/Glow-Paint/?gclid=CPTD18rlg7QCFWlxQgodj3cA7w. They
have fabric glow paint, body glow paint and glitter glow paint in addition to
the usual glow sticks, banners and other novelty items.
You can also dust or dye the fabric with glow powder. There are several
tutorials on the web like
http://www.ehow.com/how_7769815_make-fabric-glow-dark.html OR
http://glowinc.com/glow-in-the-dark/glow-in-the-dark-material.aspx You can
machine wash the item in cold water afterwards, too.
Or you can purchase ready-made glow in the dark fabric. There are several
international suppliers at
http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/glow-in-the-dark-fabric.html. They have cotton,
satin and stretch fabrics.

Thought this might be helpful to more than just me so here are some notes on the
luminex product

The threads are similar to heavy gauge filament fishing wire, so they look and
feel plasticy but can be disguised with an overlay (I tried organza). It's
ribbed so the fabric itself is very flexible on the vertical where the fiber
optics line up but the horizontal less so. Think of a bamboo placemat.Folding
crushes the glass fiber so you get a light scar. I saw the skirt and where the
model had sat on it there was the lit up equivalent of crunches you get with a
crispy silk, but these are permanent. It can be folded easily if you go with the
ribs. Their display skirt had pleats.

The luminescence is like thousands of pinpoints of light, subtle in a lit room
similar to a light sprinkle of glitter, but in the dark it has more of a ribbed
effect. You can see this in their website photos. It's sold in panels mostly
for use as table runners or wall panels and they back it with a cheap cottony
type fabric, or the pillows have an acetate type satin. Waistbands are made of
the same stuff. If you ask for just the fabric you get the opague sheets. It's
lightweight, I'd try a midweight vinyl for garment mockups.

The power/light source comes from a small battery box at one end and an LED box;
on the clothing pieces they have one set built into the waistbands (3 x AAA
battery) but some of the runner pieces have one at each end. It would be good
for really architectural garments (think stiff kimono) but tailoring into
something like a corset would require too many individual light source & battery
hookups unless you had the panels designed & wired custom before sewing. Panels
are ~19" wide. You can cut them, but obviously the cut out pieces won't glow and
anything on the opposite side of the cut from the light source goes dark. The
sewing part looks easy, just use a denim weight needle & regular thread. The
cut edges on the horizontal are like a bristle brush & can be bound (they roll
the fabric underlayer over the edge to self-bind) or left out raw like a fringe.
They are stiff & poke-y so you wouldn't want them too high on an underarm.

The lights come in white, red, blue & green and are the pure LED colors you see
in holiday lights. They said they weren't sure if the factory could install
special the RGB led and a controller so you have the color range. That's not a
regular product at this point. I expect if you have a tech guru around and a
Radio Shack you could solve that.

It's really interesting stuff, I'm going to order a piece to mess with.

You might try tutu.com. They sell all kinds of netting and tulle for
dancers. The owner, Claudia Folts, may be able to help you find what you are
looking for. She often shops for customers to get them the hard-to-find fabrics
they are searching for. Cal their toll free number and see if they can
help you.

Costume & Makeup Classes in SF
Bay Area BY TARA MAGINNIS: For all those costume junkies in the San
Francisco Bay Area who have used my web site The
Costumer’s Manifesto http://costumes.org, or seen my workshops at Costume
College, and told me they “wish I could take one of your classes”; you now
can.  I will be teaching a beginning
Costume Design and Construction class at Diablo Valley College in Pleasant Hill
this Spring from 12:30-3:20  Fridays, Jan
18-May 24, and a Theatrical Makeup class 9:30-10:45am on Tuesdays and Thursdays
January 15-May 23.  Both these classes
also require some “lab” work on shows at DVC (or another theatre by
arrangement) so you can test out your new skills on real actors and a real
stage.  This lab time can be fit into a
variety of schedules, but primarily is held 11-7 Tu-Th, or 3:30-6:30 F, and
during evenings/weekends working backstage on shows.

Drama 113 Introduction to Costume
Design (2.5 units) Because we have only 4 sewing machines for a class
of  30, this course will be very
costume-crafts oriented, with projects in distressing, dyeing, mutant
millinery, swatching, rendering, and other stranger stuff .  Lab assignments
may include work on DVC
shows, “Richard III” or “All in the Timing”.

Drama 112 Stage Makeup(2 units)
will emphasize both design and application of makeup that connects both with
the costume design and the face of the wearer.  This is not a course on
making-over people for looking pretty in street
makeup, on the contrary, it will include how to make yourself look older,
beat-up, dead or undead, scary, dorky, unreal, mask-like, animalistic, or
fabulously
glamorous like a drag queen.  Lab
assignments may include work on DVC shows, “Richard III” or “All in the
Timing”.

HOW TO SIGN UP: Go to the DVC web site at http://www.dvc.edu/
for complete information and online registration.   DVC is located at Pleasant
Hill campus• 321 Golf Club Road, Pleasant Hill, CA 94523 • (925) 685-1230
The classes still have
places open and DVC’s tuition is super cheap by the way.  Please note also,
if you see a class has
filled on your computer, I never turn down a student who shows up on the first
day of class.

WHEN I did what you said below, only ONE The Costumer's Manifesto came up and it
was a "LIKE" setting, not a "JOIN" setting.

To join the Costumer's Manifesto Group on Facebook:

Sign into your account.

Type "The Costumer's Manifesto" in the search box on the top of the page

There should be two The Costumer's Manifesto's that come up. Choose the one
listed as "Group"

It is an open group and Tara's greeting is on this page. To join the group, all
you need to do is click on the "join" button.

See you over on Facebook!
