I just bought one of these Kenmore sergers on closeout...I like it. I am
curious how you came by the list of 35 capabilities...my instruction manual is
very basic and doesn't get into how to perform these capabilities. Any
additional info would be helpful.

I don't know of any in the Syracuse area but I do know they have a pretty big
Faire there, at least they used to. Chances are pretty good that's where she got
her gown. And chances are pretty good it's a Moresca design, she's one of the
best and has been around for at least 20 years. She's out of Ulster County NY
south of Albany around the Kingston area and she does all the bigger Faires. I
can't provide a link because I'm on my cell phone but you can look her up easy
enough.

My initial guess would be that it's someone in the SCA...

Try checking the local group in Syracuse: http://www.delftwood.org/
There is a good chance that if the maker is/was SCAdian, they will be able to
help you make contact...

I've noticed that the majority of these that I've seen have a .php suffix. If,
however, you get an email with just a link, no explanation...especially if it's
from someone you don't know, but even if you know them...don't click on it. I
got a few like this from friends, but it was very out-of-character for them to
send a link without any comment, so I emailed them back to ask about it. Not
once have they responded with "Yeah, I actually sent that link to you..." It's
always been some kind of malicious software at work.

I recently bought a used book titled Sewing Magic, by Mary Brooks Picken, with
the copyright dates of 1950, 1951, and 1952. This book contains 159 patterns for
women's clothes, 1 for men (work aprons), 27 infants and children (mostly
female), 11 for home dec, and 26 for "gifts," including a few men's garments.
The women's patterns include skirts, blouses, dresses, boleros, jackets, coats,
stoles, capes, scarves, lingerie, accessories, and aprons. All the patterns are
simple, but stylish. Almost all of them have no or minimal waste. Diagrams with
measurements show how to draw the patterns directly on the fabric. A perfect
book for beginning (and more advanced) retro sewers!

Darcy is a list member in good standing since 2003 which is why the messages are
getting through, she has long had unmoderated status. Someone obviously hacked
her email and sent spam, so I'm putting her on moderated till the problem clears
up. Time was, email done on a remote service like Yahoo, Hotmail, Gmail, etc
was invulnerable, but in the last couple of months these accounts have been
hacked en mass. Heaps of my friends are sending me spam unintentionally. It has
become much more prevalent in the last few weeks. Leo Laporte, "The Tech Guy"

Mistinguett" -The "father" of RENE GRUAU

Dear
Tara
for your knowledge and documentation I present you my
new book "Charles Gesmar
1900 1928 - L'affichiste attitré de
Mistinguett". It wishes to
honour Ge(i)smar, one of the poster
designers among the most creative and innovative of the XX
century. Jean Cocteau was his
great admirer.
Cecile Coutin (Conservateur en chef, Dépt. des Arts du Spectacle,
BNF): “…my admiration  for the fantastic work you made so well
documented and illustrated! I am sure that this book will be, now, the
inevitable reference for everybody who will work about
Gesmar…”

His 60 posters much more than ever
imagined (60% unedited), are placed in the worthy tradition of
graphic works of two other artists who worked for the Moulin Rouge,
Toulouse-Lautrec and Rene Gruau (of which he was the precursor).
Despite his close relationship with Mistinguett, Gesmar
produced posters and 12.000 costume designs for many other stars (Barbette,
Maurice Chevalier, Dolly Sisters, Falconetti, Ford Marion, Gray
Gilda, Leslie Earl, Mitty et Tillio, Randall Andre, Saint-Granier, Spinelly,
Irene Ambrus, etc.)
Gesmar
worked for many theatres in Paris (Casino de Paris, Folies Bergère, Moulin
Rouge,
Music Hall des Champs Elysées, etc.) in Berlin (Admiralspalast, Th.
des Westens), in Vienna (G. Schauspielhaus, Ronacher Th. etc.) and in USA.
The books includes a detailed Gesmar’s biography, a catalogue of
all his 110 graphic works, a selection of 60 costume designs  and an extended
chronology of
his contributions (volume in black
silk cm. 24x35, pp. 192 and 230
photo colour)
Best
regards.

Hello everyone, I hope you are having a great summer. After the past two
summers of being in the Louisiana heat and humidity I am so grateful to be in
the mountains this summer.

I need a little help and thought this was the perfect place to ask since my
costuming is Mardi Gras presentation gowns.

My task is to repay a friend/writer, who helped me with the Virtual Costumer
article about my gowns (Feb. 2011).

He wants to a Sock Monkey costume for Halloween.

While in Los Angeles, buying fabrics I didn't see anything that even came close
to the coloration of a sock monkey, much less the texture.

I would prefer to do this costume as a jumpsuit instead of a two piece sweat
suit. The white breast plate would hide the zipper in the front.

I am stuck on a fabric for the jumpsuit, or what I can do to a brown knit fabric
to make it look more like a sock monkey knit.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

To bad that he doesn't want to dress as a Princess, because I can handle that
easily. LOL

I checked fabrics.com and denverfabrics.com.

Not very much at the first place, but a good selection of cotton knit and other
knits in beige, ivory and brown at Denver.

Worth a look to see whether any will work for you. I note some people are
substituting ribs for the knit texture. There was a beige loop terry, or an
Ivory Locoste knit that might get you some texture for the face part.

I googled & saw this post of the 'anatomically correct' sock monkey made from
thrift store sweaters! (NSFW?)
http://www.verkstad.com/monkey.html

Looks pretty good, I think. I'm not sure from the description, if it was
re-knitted, or panels crocheted together.

Greetings,

It definitely won't be the most cost effective solution, but here's a cotton
print that ~is~ the sock monkey pattern:

http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/Browse_Item_Details.asp?Shopper_i\
d=48937101956494893&Store_id=499&page_id=23&Item_ID=8644&Parent_Ids=

That store also has the red sock-texture.

A cheaper method might be to purchase a brown knit, and then do a watered down
cream fabric paint in a spray bottle.

Good luck!

You can buy sweater knit fabric by the yard.  I have a nice cut of purple
sweater knit I'm going to make up into a sweater to wear around the
house...someday.  Here's a link to some gray sweater fabric,
http://www.fabric.com/ProductDetail.aspx?ProductID=8f70f2a3-9e66-45ce-ba6f-4aed9\
b0f44bf   and I'll bet that if you googled sweater+knit+fabric you'd get lots
of other hits.

Good luck!
