Good day to all.

I've come out of lurk mode, hoping some kind souls out there can offer me some
bits of helpful advice.

I've been asked to get involved with a group of science fiction/Star Wars/Star
Trek fans who are about to start on a year long adventure of attending as many
conventions and events as they can all over the world. They will also be making
an independent film about their adventures. As you might guess, they want
costumes that can stand up to packing, traveling and lots of wearing. Most of
their requests, I'm good to go with, but I need some help with the Star Wars
stuff. I don't have the luxury of much research time and while I'm a fan, I've
never been into it enough to have the knowledge base I find I need for this
project.

Would anyone have personal experience (a favorite pattern used, perhaps? I can
alter well, but my drafting skills are not the greatest) or website/group
suggestions to share? Most of what I've found on the web so far is incredibly
scattered and difficult to sift through. I'm thinking Jedi robes are the best
choice for what they need, but it would still be easier if I had better base
info. And possibly sources for boots and props that I won't be able to make from
scratch as well.

Thank you in advance for any ideas or leads. I'm most grateful.

Cheers!

The other Costume Group I'm affiliated with used it for Lord of the Rings also.
But I let someone else do all that research, there was just wat too much to sift
through.

But then again it's probably just me, I have the same trouble if I try to find
something on Ebay. Too much information of the kind I'm NOT looking for can make
my head explode sometimes.

Yes, I plan to build them. I haven't seen anything pre-made that won't be
laughed right out of a convention hall. Or that is within our budget.

I had just found these, thanks to another kind suggestion from another group
member. Unfortunately, they are all out of print for several years and if you
can find them on the web, they are crazy expensive. I've got a bid in on the
men's pattern on EBAY, but so far, I've been seeing these go for much higher
than my clients can afford. From several other suggestions I've received so far,
these are a good place to start, but require some modifying to come up to the
standard I will need. I'm still open to other suggestions, in case I can't lay
my hands on this one.

Thank you!

Well, I think I may have worked it all out, thanks to the replies here and the
private messages I received and my own stubborn streak. I wanted to be sure and
say a proper thank you to all who took the time to chime in and give me a
direction to follow. Your efforts were most appreciated! :)

And if anyone is curious, I didn't find a Holy Grail of info, but several folks
suggested specific organizations and contacts and by following those I found
some enthusiasts who were very willing to share their personal experiences. I've
since been able to lay my hands on several of the base patterns and have the
instructions I need for modifying them to meet my client's needs. Whoo hoo! Now
I'm on a fabric hunt and a deadline, with a pay check and a credit "carrot" at
the end of the tunnel. Thank you all again!

I believe there is a big costume collection at the University of Wisconsin in
Milwaukee with many items from the Victorian era.

Otherwise the Kyoto Institute in Japan has a fabulous collection and I believe
most of it is online.

You might look into Kent State University Museum in Kent OH, southeast of
Cleveland.

They have extensive collections, including Victorian fashions.
Martha Pullen, the "queen" of modern heirloom sewing, wrote a two volume book on
their Victorian fashions, and another one on Children's Fashions from the

I have a bolt of white supplex synthetic four-way stretch that I've been
using for leotard lining (great stuff). I'd like to dye a batch of it to use

besides tea-staining shoulder elastics. What's my best bet for a good beige

I'm seeking some advice, please. In the great listing of UK costume museums and
collections here --

http://www.costumes.org/history/100pages/museelnx.htm#UK

-- or any others you know about, for that matter, which would you recommend?
I've already seen the V&A costume collection, Bath Museum of Costume, Museum of
London, York Castle Museum, and Kensington Palace costumes. London or vicinity
would be easiest to get to, but I might be able to make a field trip or two out
of town, especially if it's a really major collection. I just enjoy looking at
costumes -- I'm not a scholar or researcher. Killerton and Berrington Hall both
sound good, but they're a bit far for a day trip. If I can manage one, which
would you recommend?

Thank you!

I've dressed at a theatre that has an arsenal of brightly colored ribbons in the
wardrobe room - sometimes they are a solid color, sometimes they have a pattern.
The ribbons are great for labelling all laundry, the actors get to know their
ribbon (there is also a cheat sheet posted in the wardrobe room). Ribbons can be
bought cheaply and locally whenever they are on clearance. This particular
theatre had more than one space, and more than one show running concurrently, so
ribbons would be bought in sets (all the polka dots for one show, all the
stripes for the other). This worked with our relatively small casts, it might
get tricky if you are talking "casts of thousands", like a big musical. For big
shows I've always seen numbers assigned - then laundry gets labelled by sets (if
you have duplicates, or even a third set, each set has a color). Numbers painted
on the ribbon in fabric paint or puff paint are more visible and permanent than
a sharpie or
  fabric marker.

I used Simplicity 5840 View C to make a simple Jedi costume for a young cousin.
Since it only came in adult sizes, I had to redraft the pattern to a child's
size, but it wasn't too difficult since much of the pattern was based on simple
shapes. As I recall, it was a pretty easy pattern to follow. I used a
different pant pattern because I already had one in his size.

Not sure how accurate it is, but it came out fine and my cousin enjoyed wearing
it.

the 501st is the official costuming group of star wars(they do alot of
charities) you have to have an Imperial Costume(officer, stormtrooper or sith
lord) there's also the rebel legion(good guys etc).

For specific type costumes(like boba fett etc) there are sites dedicated
directly for that costume.

Cheers!

either! So here it is again, and apologies if it's a double-posting.

This page has some good illustrations and pattern suggestions:

I have used some African-type sewing patterns in the past for Jedi clothing, but
I think they are long out of print.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the suggestion, but I have indeed found alleycatscratch. I've used
them mainly for LOTR research, which they excel at, but for Star Wars? Not so
much.
I've also hit Padawan's Guide and Amber's Jedi Meditation Center and a few of
the forum boards like Jedi Council etc. I just keep thinking there has to be a
"golden" source or two out there that I'm missing somehow. I've never had
trouble finding good solid info for most of my other sci-fi endeavors, but then,
the ones I have attempted have all been things I've been very knowledgeable in
myself. And if any of you have ever worked with sci-fi fans, you know they are
easily the equivalent of SCA folk--they can get very very picky about
"accuracy." (And I mean no disrespect by that. I AM one of those people myself
to a certain degree.) My clients themselves are not so worried about this
aspect, but they also need to interact with folk who are, and they can't look
like they just pulled any old thing off the discount Halloween rack at Wal-mart.
Plus, if this thing actually goes as far as they plan to take it, I could end up
with a nice little credit for my resume, or at least a bit more word of mouth
business.

Mind? No! Not at all! That's great. Most of my local contacts were of no help
with this particular project, being more of the historical re-enactment and less
of the futuristic or movie type. A costumer's guild that's into sci-fi could be
exactly what I need. I'll look forward to their suggestions. Thanks!

Have you thought about altering a Samurai or Kimono pattern? That's the basic
historical influence for the Jedi outfits. It looks like they have loose
breeches tucked into their boots instead of the wide pleated trousers of the
Samurai, and the "batwing" jacket isn't quite as pronounced, but basically it's
the same shape.

Here are some links. I would try using these patterns to make a muslin mock-up,
fit it on the person, and use a sharpie to draw new style lines on the muslin
with them in it, to show where you want to change the shape and fit.

I am only a "home" sewer, but I have a costume problem I am hoping you can help
me with. I am involved in a local 'touring company' show and I need to create a
pair of "tear away' pants and shirt for a show we are doing now (I am "an
audience member" chosen to replace a missing actor, who then reveals her "true"
identity). I am "assuming" the easiest/quickest way for the shirt is to take the
buttons sew them on top of the button holes and put velcro on the inside to keep
it closed. As for the pants I was thinking just to open the outside leg seam
and put in velcro there as well. It has to hold up to a little movement and
scrutiny but will be covered for the most part by yet another costume peice (a
large foam pirate head that goe over my head and hangs down my front). Am I
missing anything important here and which is the best way to install the velcro
on the pants so it tears away easily, quickly and with the least amount of fuss
as I have to "break into song" ASAP once the costume is off. Tyhanks for your
help.

You need to consider in which direction the costume will be torn off of the
actor, then open each one of those seams and replace the stitching with a thin
strip (or patches) of velcro (unless you want to handstitch them closed every
night! Been there, done that!) For example, if the costume is being pulled from
the BACK, each FRONT seam should breakaway. For pants, the entire crotch seam
must be able to open, as well as the leg seams, otherwise the pants will not come
off. Believe me, I've tried it!
It's best if the fabric has a little stretch to it, as cotton sometimes will
tear even when it's rigged to breakaway. Serge all the seams to prevent snagging
on the velcro. Set up a Dress Tech with each actor to show the "puller" how to
grab hold of the "pullee", and practice, practice, practice! It's a lot of fun
when it works! Elizabeth
