Hi all!
Cathy and I will once again be hosting our annual New Years Day Juggle,
1-4
pm on Jan 1, 2000 at the new Lake Dallas High School (same as last
year,
technically in the city of Corinth). To get there take FM 2181 west
from I
35E. Turn right at the light onto Garden Ridge. The school is on the
right.
Park behind (North of) the building. Weather permitting we will be
outside.
Otherwise look for signs for directions.
Happy Holidays and 'hope to see you there!
Rodney
Tentativity has passed, and our room reservation for Jugglefest has
been confirmed.
In light of our growing attendance and an increased number of
organized activities, I had requested both large rooms on the fifth
floor of Bellmont, but was told at the time (off-the-record) that one
of those rooms was likely going to be seized by the Kinesiology
programs, and would no longer be available for student-sponsored
events such as ours. Well the deal is done, and it shall soon come
to pass (no, that's just a figure of speech). Beginning Dec. 14,
2000, the godless kinesiologists will invade BEL 502-- OUR room-- the
room in which we've laughed, cried, passed, dropped, flung and caught
many a prop and shared countless memories.
But I declare to you, now is the time to forge ahead, create fresh
memories, and embark on a new era of Jugglefestivities. Our new room
is Bellmont 528-- directly adjacent to 502, and more importantly, the
exact same size as 502.
Again: We are officially slated for
Feb. 2 - 4, 2001 in Bellmont 528.
The schedule for open juggling is the same as last year:
Friday, 5 - 10pm
Saturday, noon - 6pm
Sunday, noon - 6pm
As usual, the public show is planned for Saturday evening at 7:30 in
Jester Auditorium.
Stay tuned for details about specific events and activities as they develop.
Yours truly,
Jim "play that funky juggle, white boy" Maxwell
Dear friends of TJS:
Mark your calendars.... The dates for the 8th Annual Jugglefest in
Austin, TX are
Feb. 2-4, 2001.
The location is the same as in previous years, but we have requested
BOTH gyms this year. Final confirmation on the room reservation is
still several weeks away, but we have never been turned down for the
same weekend in the past. If it needs to be rescheduled, I will
notify. You can also stay tuned to our website:
http://www.juggling.place.org for developments and updates.
We're keeping the format the same as last year, since that worked so well.
Friday - 5-10pm
open juggling and Twilight Torches at the Tower
Saturday and Sunday - noon-6pm
open juggling with games and workshops to be scheduled
Public Show - Sat., 7:30pm
If you're interested in performing in the show, please let me know.
Meanwhile, keep 'em off the floor.

just say so.
MotionFest- Physicality and the Performing Arts
Nov. 9 - 12
Best Western Hotel & Convention Center
Baltimore, MD.
There's a web-site below, plus I have an application flyer-- I can
fax. Here's transcription of the letter that accompanied:
*******************
Greetings from Tim Furst, original member of the Flying Karamazov
Brothers. I'd like to make sure you are aware of a great event
coming up in November - MotionFest!
Created by and for performing artists of many disciplines, and
oriented toward all aspects of performance, MotionFest will consist
of four days of workshops and lectures to sharpen your theatrical
skills.
We have enlisted some incredible people to come and share their
talents, including (but definitely not limited to) Tony Montanaro,
Dick Monday, Barry Lubin, Dody Disanto, Bob Berky, Max Howard, and
Robert Nelson. If that sounds like too much fun, 'dose of reality'
lectures will be given by copyright lawyers, entertainment
accountants, marketing strategists, and insurance guys. There will
also be vocal coaches and stage make-up artists to pass on what they
know... and if that's not enough, a photographer will be onsite so
that you can have new promo shots taken during the Festival. Still
not enough? There will also be an open stage where you can present
your material and get feedback from 'the experts,' including the
attendees.
Dancers, actors, jugglers, circus artists, magicians, and even mimes
-- such a diversity of performance disciplines coming together in one
festival has only been a dream up to this point (and results may
vary), but one thing is certain -- anything is possible at
MotionFest. A lot of time, energy and talent has been put into
creating this unique festival. I hope that you will consider
attending, and please forward this info to everyone you know who
might be thinking of getting up on a stage.
A complete list of what MotionFest is offering and registration
instructions can be found at the MotionFest website:
http://www.juggling.org/MotionFest
If members of your club mention their club affiliation, they will
receive a $25 reduction in their registration fee.
I hope to see you there.
Best regards,
Tim Furst (Fyodor Karamazov)

World Juggling Day, June 17 2000
http://www.juggle.org/wjd/index.html
The IJA decided to get more involved with World Juggling Day. The result is
that there has been no organization, and Todd Smith, who has been donating
prizes for the closest guesses to the number of jugglers reported has decided
not to donate this year. It's still a good opportunity to juggle, and to teach
people. Enjoy!

I may have mentioned this before, but I'm not sure, and it can't hurt to plug
them again. They meet on Sunday's.

The Flaming Idiots will be at the Dallas Theater Center on July 7, 8, and 9,
and again July 14, 15, and 16.
Tickets are available via tickets.com. It's possible that the Dallas
jugglers will
try to organize a group and get discount tickets, but for that to happen
someone
has to do the organizing - and it's not going to be me, so feel free to
volunteer.

As I'm sure most of you know, you can always find current information for Texas
Juggling items on my website, at www.whitis.com. From time to time, I get
an email from someone who is looking for juggling contacts in a city which
doesn't
have a juggling club. Any time there is a club, I assume that the locals
at that
club are the people to contact, but for any of you who may be a lone-juggler in
your town, feel free to contact me to let me know where you live, and how
someone
should contact you. If you wish, I'll put it on the website. If you
prefer more privacy,
I can just keep some notes and send that to anyone asking about contacting
jugglers
in your area.

B-dee-b-dee-b-dee... That's all, folks!
All,
You are hereby invited to attend the second "First and Last, End of the
Century Summer Solstice Celebration and Squash Toss" at Cardo's (Rick
Orndolf) Sprout Farm in Ponder TX (Just south of Denton) on June 17, 2000.
There will be juggling, food and other fun. The main event is the Hurling
competitions (5-8 pm) wherein contestants test their homemade catapults,
trebuchets, slingshots and other hurling devices for accuracy, distance and
height. (This is where the squashes and other assorted fruits and veggies
come in!) You are welcome to build your own device and compete.
For details, directions etc. contact me.

By the way, I met, and spent 8 hours two Fridays ago, with Art
Jennings, an 88 year old former vaudevillean who was one of the 7
original founders of the International Juggling Association. He
lives in San Antonio and although he no longer is able to juggle (his
hands can't close fast enough), he is still active and attends the
IJA conventions. He has an incredible video collection and enjoys
talking about juggling and the jugglers he has known. If any of you
are going to Montreal next August, seek him out.

Bad news for Dallas jugglers.
We have been told that we can only use the Half Price Books
on the First and Third Wednesdays. There was a conflict with another
group, who had booked to use the meeting space on the second Wednesday,
and apparently they want to keep some additional time open for other groups
who may wish to use the space.
This is effective immediately, but this upcoming Wednesday is the first
Wednesday of December, so we'll have the room then, from 6:30 - 9:30.
It is possible that we can convince them to allow us to use the fifth
Wednesdays,
also, in the months that have them. December does, but it's Dec. 29th, right
between Christmas and Y2K celebrations, so unless I hear from people who are
interested in meeting that Wednesday, I don't plan to ask until January.
I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's not under my control.
I believe we need to be meeting weekly, so this change means that we should,
once again, be on the lookout for a location we can use every week.
Date, time and place for Austin Jugglefest 2000 is now confirmed.
Bellmont 502 (same as always; driving directions below)
February 4 -6, 2000
Fri. - 5pm - 10pm*

Sun. - noon - 6pm
*Note the addition of Friday night to this years festival. When
considering our usual Thursday meeting, we're looking at a four day
juggling extravaganza!
Public show will be in Jester Auditorium, Sat., Feb. 5, 7:30pm.
(driving directions below) If you wish to be in the public show,
please contact Jim Maxwell (below) as soon as possible.
Price structure: a one-time fee will gain admittance to the gym for
duration of the festival.

Directions to Bellmont 502 from Interstate 35.
Coming from North: Take upper level of freeway as you approach
downtown. (Signs will say "University of Texas- Lower Level," but
for our purposes, upper level is easier.) Exit MLK and turn right
onto Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Turn right at second light
(Trinity/San Jacinto).
Coming from South: Exit MLK (just past capitol) and turn left onto
Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. Turn right at third light (Trinity/San
Jacinto).
Everybody: This road (Trinity/San Jacinto) will bring you onto
campus. Go past guard-gate (guardless on weekends) and to the first
stop sign-- you will see Bellmont Hall and the Stadium on your right.
Find nearest available parking: All parking on campus is marked for
specific permits at specific times. Most restrictions are only
during the week (M - F, 7a - 4p) but you will want to double-check.
Find the nearest sign with arrows indicating your parking space, and
make sure it does NOT read "AT ALL TIMES" or "ALL OTHER TIMES" and
your car will not be towed. There is also a parking garage ($5
maximum) on MLK between San Jacinto and Speedway; this is a 5 min.
walk from both Bellmont and Jester Auditorium.
Directions to Jester Auditorium (Public Show)
Coming from I 35: Exit MLK and go west. Turn right at light just
past the parking garage onto Speedway (same street going left is
called Congress). Go to first stop sign (21st St.) and Jester Center
will be on the right. After you park (see above) you will want to
enter Jester from this corner (Speedway and 21st) and the auditorium
is located just inside on the 21st St. side.
Coming from Bellmont 502: Exit the building onto San Jacinto, and to
the left will be the intersection of 21st St. Go across the creek
and up the hill on 21st to the first stop sign (Speedway) and Jester
Center will be on your left. You will want to enter Jester from this
corner (Speedway and 21st) and the auditorium is located just inside
on the 21st St. side.
The new Flaming Idiots show-- "FIRE"-- will premiere at Zachary Scott
Theatre in Austin. Tickets range from $25 - 30. The original 5 week
run has already been extended to six based on pre-sales; it's
currently scheduled for Dec. 8 - Jan. 16.
Who are the Flaming Idiots? They are easily the most notorious
juggling troupe from Austin, but you've likely seen them at a
Ren-Fest somewhere. After 15 years, they are retiring from the
Ren-Fest circuit, and taking their new show up to NYC for a 2-week
stint Off-Broadway in Feb., where they hope to be picked up for a
longer run, perhaps ON-Broadway. After they conquer the Big Apple,
they will take the show on tour. But we get the chance to see them
first-- before the rest of the country! Don't miss it.
The Austin Jugglers are getting an order for Sun., Dec. 12, 2:30pm.
(We anticipate a group discount of a buck or so off the regular
price.) If you would like a ticket for this showing, contact Jim
Maxwell, (512) 458-3276, <jmax@...>. Otherwise, you may
order tix directly from ZSTC.

Good news, Dallas jugglers...
The new Half Price Books opened recently, and they have agreed to let us
hold weekly juggling meetings in their community room.
I'm not sure of the address. The old address was 5915 E Northwest Highway,
and the new building is right across the street from there. The new building,
where we will meet, is the old "Sterling Jewelry" building, a long-time Dallas
business. After Sterling shut down, I believe it was a Sports Town for awhile.
If you go to NorthWest Highway, a half-mile or so East of 75/Central, you'll
find it.
For those of you not familiar with half-price...
http://www.halfpricebooks.com
Our first meeting will be Wednesday Oct 20th.
After that we hope to be there every Wednesday. They've marked us
down to have the room from 6:30 - 9:30 each week.
While they seem to like the idea, they also seem a little skittish, mostly
because they don't know us, I believe. They are worried about a customer
getting hurt, which is probably a legitimate worry considering how the
legal system works today.
Let's try to make a good impression.
Be sure to tell your friends!
All,
I'll be at County Seat Saturday on the Denton Square this Saturday
(Sept.11), if you'd like to come and juggle. I'll be on the stage in the
North West corner of the square at around 3 pm. After that we can find an
open shady spot and juggle until 6 pm. If you are interested, contact me
for more details and so I can watch for you.

This should be similar to the previous parties at the same location.
Bring swim-wear, children, juggling stuff, musical instruments, extra
food (if you want), extra drinks (if you want) and a good attitude!
Fire jugglers - bring white gas (Coleman fuel) not gasoline for the torches.

June 19th, 1999, is World Juggling Day.
The Austin jugging club will gather at Barton Springs to hang out, juggle,
and swim.
If your local group is making plans for WJD, please let me know so I can
put the word out here. Also, it would be good to contact the folks
hosting the WJD website with information about your event. Currently,
there are NO Texas entries.
Also, be sure to enter your guesses about how many people will juggle on
WJD at http://www.juggle.org/wjd/99index.html
Hey all you jugglers and performers!!
World renowned and international award winning unicyclist Andy Cotter will be
in Austin for a demonstration and unicycle workshop Saturday, May 22 from
11am - 2pm at All Saint's Church (where the Austin Jugglers meet) address-
209 W. 27th just off of Whitus in the University area. (plenty of free and
close parking available). After the workshop will be a ride down the
university drag, so everyone bring their 24" or 28" and we'll go for a group
ride!
Andy does things on one wheel that you never thought were possible. Most of
them are even legal...until he gets on a 28 and breaks the speed limits.
Andy is one of the world's top unicyclist and will be demonstrating and
teaching his techniques on all sizes of wheels and heights. He is President
of The Twin City Unicycle Clubs...one of the largest if not the largest
unicycle club in the nation as well as - Vice President of the Unicycling
Society of America which has a magazine called On One Wheel. His websites
are :
http://www.skypoint.com/~cotter/http://www.unicycling.org/usa/
Eddie Moffat who is from Austin and Director and Founder of Austin One
Wheelers Unicycle Club, who is also a world class unicyclist and has won
national freestyle and distance awards will also demonstrate his incredible
dancing and spinning techniques on a uni.
The charge is $10 for the 3 hour workshop. We might be able to videotape and
sell tapes, I'm not sure, but if you can't attend and would like a tape, let
me know.
My phone number is 512/443-1916 and my email is WalkaboutP@....
If you could forward this on to your mailing lists I would appreciate it. If
you do want to comople to stay in friendly Austin juggler homes if needed so
your costs will be kept to a minimum.
Write or call if you need more info.
Thanks and come to the workshop. It will be amazing and awesome and
inspiring!

Alan Plotkin has produced a 30-minute highlights video from our Austin
festival in February. If you don't already know Alan's work, he is an
accomplished professional videographer and he specializes in juggling
festivals. This particular product is extraordinary, even after you
consider my obvious bias. He has compiled and edited the very best footage
from the gym, as well as the unicycle ride, big toss-up and the public
show-- the end result is a slick presentation showcasing some of the finest
talent Texas has to offer. Cost is $15, and imho, very well worth it.
He's also offering straight footage from the public show (approx. 135 min.)
for $15. To order either video, you may contact me or Alan directly.

via this list about individual meetings, but if any of you would like
reminders in future months, email me and I'll set up a mini-list just for that.
