In response to the question about double house numbers being listed in the matriky.archives.cz for the Roznov region:

The person who entered the records wrote according to their own methods.  As you can tell from looking at the records, there was a set number of columns for each sacrament.    I have seen columns that clearly said the house number for the groom and a column for the house number for the bride.  I have seen only a column for the groom’s house number and the bride’s house number entered with the information about her name and father’s name/occupation/village.

I have also seen the bride’s house number entered into the column next to the groom (my Krzenek family was a prominent family in the village).  I have seen a house number next to the groom that is actually a house number to his village, without stating his village, causing confusion.

However the use of double house numbers have coincided with the time when the numbering of the houses in the village changed.  (Someone had previously mentioned this.)  For example, Michael Krzenek lived in house #6 (Valasska Bystrice) since the time the house was assigned that number.  After the Napoleonic Wars, I assume the village was growing, so houses received new numbers.  Michael Krzenek’s house of #6 became #170, so for awhile, until folks got used to the new numbers, entries were made “6/170”.  A few years later, only #170 was used, so the family didn’t move, only the house number changed.  (The Jan Krzenek family kept their house number, #60, during this time without it changing.)

I had read some records in Halenkov and had seen the same numbering practice, but I do not know the exact regulations that were passed about the numbering system.  I am only relating what I have experienced with my work in the records.

Do not trust indexes.    I have yet to see brides indexed.  Indexes should be organized by the LAST name of the baptized/deceased, but I have seen where a different scribe, for his time period in the parish, decided to index by FIRST names, so in the middle of the “C/K” index, you find entries for “Katharines”.

It is absolutely maddening, but so wonderful to have access to these records, compared to the old days when a researcher was hired to travel to the archives and he/she only had a chance to look at a set number of books a day.

I was wondering if there is any kind of archive for this (above) newspaper, as
it was in existence from 1891 to present for the town of West.

Family recollection, is that Vilem ("William") Joe Bacak was picking cotton in a
field (in West) during a storm and that he was struck and killed by lightning.
I would have imagined that something like this would have made the paper of such
a small town.

I have not been able to locate a death cert for him either.

William Joe Bacak (b. 22 May 1895, Mart, McLennan County, TX; d. 18 Jul 1917,
West, McLennan County, TX))

Thank you for reading!

(Hello Rosemary!)

I have long tried to find an 1890 census for Justice Precinct 8, McLennan
County, when John Ermis probably lived next to "my" Frank Bacak by that time or
vice-versa. (I have 1900 and 1920.) Frank was married to Annie in 1884 in
Fayetteville, and next showed up in the 1900 census for Elk.

In 1900, John Ermis (born Oct 1857, per 1900 census) lived two houses from Frank
Bacak and family in what was surely the town of Elk. Frank's wife Annie died in
1903, and he reportedly walked away. He re-married in 1904 and lived in Dallas.

I also can't seem to find my Bacak line in an 1890 census for Fayetteville,
Fayette County or the same year for Justice Precinct 8 (West)? (I don't know
that an 1890 census exists for those counties.) My direct Bacak line arrived in
1871. Looking for my line by name during this period is really difficult. In
1880 for example, Valentin Bacak was written as "Balentine Batcha". In 1900,
Frank Bacak is written as "Frank Bachok", in a 1903 funeral record as "Bachak";
by 1910 his eldest son was recorded as "Bacake", and by 1920 it was written in
the census correctly. It only took 40 years.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,
Richard

Her nursing career spanned almost 40 years with 33 of those at Methodist Hospital where she worked as a staff nurse, head nurse, supervisor, and manager of the main operating rooms. In 1986 she was honored as Woman of the Year by the Federation of Houston Professional Women representing AORN. She retired from Methodist Hospital in 1990 but remained an active member of several organizations, such as: Association of Operating Room Nurses (AORN); Council of Catholic Women and the Serra Club of Southwest Houston. She enjoyed her retirement through traveling, volunteering and gardening.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 41 years, James Daniel "Dan" Magown. She is survived by her children Kathy Magown Dickson and husband Wayne, Michael Magown and wife Oly, and Danice Magown Boyette, her grandchildren Stephanie Dickson Kearney and husband Bill, Matthew Dickson and wife Jennifer, Kelly Boyette, Holly Boyette Massiatte and husband Jason, and James Magown, and her great-grandson Kaiden Massiatte, and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces, and nephews.

Lil treasured her time with family. She dearly loved her children; Kathy, Michael and Danice. Her greatest moments were seeing her grandchildren grow into young adults. Stephanie, Matthew, Kelly, Holly and James were her pride and joy! She enjoyed watching them in school events, playing sports, nursing them while sick, helping with "taxi" service to events and appointments. Her great-grandson, Kaiden, was a reason to celebrate as the family expanded.

Faith was a cornerstone in her life and she relished volunteering and worshipping at Corpus Christi Catholic Church where she established wonderful friendships with church members and the priests.

To my children:

I have savored every taste from the cup of life,

And now lovingly pass it on to those left behind.

"SPANEM BOHEM"!

Lovingly,

Mother

Richard,

You will be hard-pressed to find an 1890 census for very many areas because it was destroyed in a fire in the 1920s.

In 1880 for example, Valentin Bacak was written as "Balentine Batcha". In 1900, Frank Bacak is written as "Frank Bachok", in a 1903 funeral record as "Bachak"; by 1910 his eldest son was recorded as "Bacake", and by 1920 it was written in the census correctly. It only took 40 years.

Hi Richard,

My husband’s Ermis group arrived in 1866 and lived in Fayette County area.  Several daughters married & moved to Wharton & Nueces Counties.  The only Ermis in your area was a female who married a Kucera.  The John Ermis in our family was born 1880 in Fayetteville and never left Fayette County.

From what I can figure out, there were at least 3 different Ermis familes who arrived in Texas.  So far, none of the others are kin to us.

Sorry I couldn’t help you with your John Ermis.

Rosemary

(Hello Rosemary!)

I have long tried to find an 1890 census for Justice Precinct 8, McLennan County, when John Ermis probably lived next to "my" Frank Bacak by that time or vice-versa. (I have 1900 and 1920.) Frank was married to Annie in 1884 in Fayetteville, and next showed up in the 1900 census for Elk.

In 1900, John Ermis (born Oct 1857, per 1900 census) lived two houses from Frank Bacak and family in what was surely the town of Elk. Frank's wife Annie died in 1903, and he reportedly walked away. He re-married in 1904 and lived in Dallas.

I also can't seem to find my Bacak line in an 1890 census for Fayetteville, Fayette County or the same year for Justice Precinct 8 (West)? (I don't know that an 1890 census exists for those counties.) My direct Bacak line arrived in 1871. Looking for my line by name during this period is really difficult.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,
Richard

The West Library and Museum has The West News on microfilm. You would have to
ask the librarian how far back the archives go.

I would have imagined that something like this would have made the paper of such
