Last Saturday morning the people of the county were shocked when the news went out that John Stefka was dead, after a brief illness with pneumonia, at his home at Sunny Side, age 63 years and 6 months.

In Mr. Stefka's death the county loses one of its most useful citizens, he was always unselfish in his service to his people, to his county and his state; being always ready to give his time and any other aid to further any move that would better his people.  Being ever ready to answer the call of a neighbor and generously give any assistance he could.

The high esteem in which he was held by his fellowmen, was reflected in the concourse of friends that attended his funeral, from over the state, they came from Austin, Houston, Edna; Ft. Bend and Austin counties, to pay their last tribute to their dead friend.

The decedent leaves a widow, several children and a host of friends to mourn his loss.

Shiner, Feb. 15.--The wife and 15-months-old baby of Joe Stefka, living five miles south of here were found dead by Stefka at noon today.  The woman's head was torn away by a load of shot and two shots entered each side of her breast.  The child was shot in the bowels.  There were evidences of a terrible struggle.  The room was covered with blood and brains.  Stefka's gun, which laid near the bodies with three empty sheels on the floor and two in the gun, did the bloody work of the murderer.  Stefka was brought in by the officers and charged with the Crime.  His examining trial is set for Monday.

Hallettsville, Tex., Nov. 10.--The case of the State of Texas vs. Joseph Stefka for the murder of his wife was placed on trial this morning.  As the case is somewhat notorious owing to the cruel features that are connected with it, an infant child being killed at the same time, the special venire was quickly exhausted, seven jurors being selected.  The case was tried at the last term of the court, resulting in a mistrial.  There were no eyewitnesses to the crime, and the dependant says his wife and child were killed during a temporary absence from his home.

Hallettsville, March 16 -- Judge Kennon has stated that he would not order a special venire in the Stefka case, as it was his intention to change venue in the case.

Stetka is charged with the murder of his wife and little child at their home near Shiner last February.  He was tried here at the Spring and fall terms of court last year and each time the jury failed to agree.  Stefka is out on bond.

The sons and daughters of Mrs. Annie Stavinoha, together with their families, gathered at the home of her daughter, Mr. Jerome Bohac of the Ammannsville community, Sunday, June 10, for a great family reunion.

A splendid dinner was served at 11 o'clock, with barbecued sausage, friend chicken, cakes, many kinds of salads, coffee, light beer, etc.  The "eats" were contributed and brought to the feast by the various families.

After dinner the participants went out under the shade of the trees to spend the warm afternoon.  At 4 o'clock the men folks decided to have a ball game, so from the oldest to the youngest they engaged in indoor [outdoor?] baseball. It was fun for the players and for the ones watching the game.  They played seven innings, the score standing fifteen to sixteen.
After the game was concluded, a lunch of cake, leomonade, etc. was served.  Afterwards all departed for their respective homes, hoping to have other family reunions in the near future.  The joy would have been greater had Mr. Stavinoha been here with us.  He died some four years ago.

The following members of the family were present to participate in the reunion: Mrs. Emil Stavinoha, Sr., and family of Rosenberg; Mr. Voytech Stavinoha and family of Fairchild; Mr. Fred Stavinoha and family of Rosenberg; Mrs. Lillie Horak and family of Needville; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Stavinoha and son of Ganado; Mr. Em il Hluchanek and family of Weimar; Mr. Adolf Stavinoha and family of Temple; Mr. Jerome Bohac and family of Ammannsville; Mr. and Mrs. Adolf Kristek of Weimar; Mr. and Mrs. George Stavinoha of Bastrop; Mr. and Mrs. Jim Stavinoha and son of Ammannsville.  The married grandchildren of Mrs. Stavinoha were: Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Stavinoha and daughter of Needville; Mr. Joe Gurecky and family of Fairchild; Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Wenzel of Needville; Mr. and Mrs. Sterling De Shozo of Rosenberg; Mr. and Mrs. Emil Stavinoha, Jr., of Rosenberg; Mr. and Mrs. Lad Stavinoha of Needville; Mr. C. Being a military wife permitted Dorothy and the children to enjoy extensive travel and to live in such places as three years in Hawaii, and four years in The Netherlands of Europe. The period in Europe was particularly enjoyable because the travel to other countries was not restricted and required only minimal paper work and effort to obtain approval prior to departure.

The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, May 23, 2004, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home.

A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m., Monday, May 24, 2004, at Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, 2004, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Needville, with the Rev. James Ramsey officiating.

Interment will be held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, 2004, at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio.

Arrangements by Wilke-Clay-Fish Funeral Home, 2620 S. Congress, Austin, Texas 78704. 512-442-1446.

Mr. and Mrs. Herman Kloesel were called to Engle early Monday morning by news of the death of Mrs. Kloesel's father, Mr. Rudolf M. Stavinoha, prominent citizen and business man of the little community of Engle, whose sudden and unexpected death occurred at Santa Rosa Hospital, San Antonio, at 8:30  that morning.

From Mr. Kloesel we learned that Mr. Stavinoha, while handling a big block of ice a few days ago, had the misfortune to let it slip and the huge piece of ice struck him on one leg, bursting a large blood vessel.  This blood ran through his leg and according to our understanding was like an overflowing river, a dangerous proposition.  His leg was packed in ice, but it was then that other measures had to be resorted to.  He was hurriedly taken to the San Antonio hospital and everything possible done for his welfare.  For a time, we understand, he seemed better, but suddenly Monday he took a turn for the worse and passed away very quickly.

The body was brought home for burial and same took place Tuesday, we understand.

Mr. Stavinoha is survived by his widow, two daughters, Mrs. John Koudelka of Borden, Mrs. Herman Kloesel of this city, two sons, Henry of Houston and Erwin of Engle, besides a host of relatives and friends.

Mr. Stavinoha was highly regarded by all who knew him.  He had many friends throughout this section, all of whom deeply regret his untimely death.  All join us in expressions of sincere and heartfelt sympathy to his bereaved ones.

Mr. Felix Stavinoha of the Fairchilds district died very suddenly early Monday morning of heart failure.  He, with many others, had attended a box supper at Fairchilds and had enjoyed the time and felt well as usual.  After returning home and preparing for bed he suddenly took sick and did not recover, dying at an early hour in the morning.

Mr. Stavinoha leaves a wife, three sons and two daughters to mourn him.  Mrs. Stavinoha's aged mother has been living with them for about two years.  Besides the immediate family, there are three brothers and sister of the deceased, J. F. and Adolph Stavinoha of Ammannsville, C. M. Stavinoha of Jourdanton, and Mrs. Joe Barta of McMullin county.

The funeral services will be held in the Catholic Church at Needville Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock and burial will be in the Needville Catholic cemetery.
