I have taken various things to family and friends as gifts in the past.  T-shirts with logos on them have been well-received.  I have also taken pins, scarves of flags and small flags of America and Oklahoma.  This time I am taking various Mardi Gras beads and masks from New Orleans for sister city friends.  We are also taking small books and magazines about our town and the USA.
Western items are also well liked.  I took bolo ties and Western shirts, sometimes small jewelry items.
This time I am taking several CDs of various American singers and Jazz music.

It has been the custom to remove shoes upon entering all homes I have been to in the Czech Republic too.  One of my cousins has house shoes of all sizes that are there to be worn.  They have wood floors, so this is nice when it is cold.

UP AND DOWN

       A Film by Jan Hrebejk

2005 CZECH REPUBLIC’S SUBMISSION FOR THE ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM

This Czech movie will be shown in the Austin area starting April 4 at the Arbor Cinemas

One of the actors in this film is the former president of the Czech Republic Vaclav Havel.

Director’s statement

After the 1989 fall of the Communist regime, which my co-screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky and I experienced firsthand as students at the Prague Film Academy, life around us started to change dramatically.

It was easier for documentary filmmakers to reflect on the fast-moving changes taking place at that time, when reality was faster than feature film stories could keep up with. That’s probably why all our films prior to UP AND DOWN take place in the past. We looked for stories in bygone periods and found parallels to what we were going through, as in the historical drama DIVIDED WE FALL, or in the retro-comedy genre films PUPENDO and COSY DENS.

UP AND DOWN is our first contemporary film where we talk about life in the Czech Republic. We decided to tell the story of everyday people and to shoot in the streets we walk on every day.  We even shot at the airport while it was in full operation!

We were fascinated by the power and simultaneous fragility of the world. We found a few stories, both local and universal: a child lost and sold, the reunion of old lovers, siblings who did not know of each other for twenty years, stories of forgiveness and hope, of aggression and humanity, stories of the Old World versus the New World. We decided to tell these stories with a sense of humor... And the strangest thing is that, we did not have to invent that many things!

Our characters are both heroes and victims of today’s globalized world, a world in which love and hate seem to roam so indiscriminately.

- Jan Hrebejk

Synopsis

In the dead of the night, near the Czech-Slovak border, two smugglers discover their truckload of illegal Indian immigrants have left a baby behind.

In a small Prague apartment, Franta (Jiri Machacek) and Mila (Natasa Burger) dream of having a child, but Franta – on probation because of his soccer hooliganism past – is not allowed to adopt, and Mila is unable to conceive. After cashing in on their savings, Mila decides to buy a baby from a pawnshop that fronts a den of thieves and pickpockets.

Meanwhile, an unusual family reunion is taking place: Academy professor Oto (Jan Triska) collapses while teaching, prompting his estranged son Martin (Petr Forman, son of director Milos) to return to Prague from Australia to see his father and his mother, Vera (Emilia Vasaryova), long separated from Oto whom she still pines for. Oto is now living with the beautiful and much younger Hana (Ingrid Timkova), who works in a refugee aid center helping immigrants to adjust to their new lives…

Apparently, "Up and Down" only showed at the Greenway
for a week. I did not see it listed in this week's
lineup there. It came and went so fast.

Maybe someone could persuade a theater to bring it
back. It did get good reviews.

To let everyone know, there are lots of Anders buried in Schulenburg
cemetery (the catholic cemetery, St Rose of Lima) along side some Stanzels
(which are also my family). I am planning a trip there so I can start
piecing this all together.

If you would like to read more about how our fellow Moravians came to Pa and NC in the early 1700s, the above has several links  of interest.  It could be that some of those ancestors we just can't locate in Europe may have come to America much earlier than we Texans?  Take a peek at "Old Salem, NC" for many interesting facts.

Hello:

I'd like to give everyone a heads-up on a documentary series that
will be airing on PBS in April. It's called "The Meaning of Food,"
and it's about the multi-faceted relationship between food and our
ways of life, culture, and family.

In the series, there's a 12-minute story about Texas-Czechs -- it's
called "Kolaches: A Bite of Czech Tradition," and it takes place
around the annual Kolache Festival in Burleson County. We shot the
story in September 2003, and followed several kids from Snook as they
entered the bake show and competed for ribbons. There are also scenes
from the Prazka Pout, as well as some great music from Mark Halata &
Texavia and the Bobby Jones Czech Band.

For more information about "The Meaning of Food," check out these web
addresses:
http://www.promotion.opb.org/programs/food.htm
http://www.pbs.org/opb/meaningoffood/

Here's the broadcast schedule for Austin, Houston, and College
Station. (Be sure to double-check your local listings -- PBS stations
don't always follow the same schedule.)

April 7 - 9:00p-10:00p - "Food & Life"
April 14 - 9:00p-10:00p - "Food & Culture" (**The Kolache story is in
this episode**)
April 21 - 9:00p-10:00p - "Food & Family"

Feel free to contact me if you'd like more info. I had a blast doing
this story, and I think we caught a true slice of Texas-Czech
culture. Hope y'all enjoy watching it.

Sincerely,

John Mikulenka

The late Rev. Dan Marek wrote a number of articles that appeared in various issues of "The Brethren Journal," the official organ of the Unity of the Brethren. The articles pertain to the history of the Czech-Moravian Brethren in Texas and their European beginnings. They have now been compiled and will appear in book form that should be available this summer through the Brethren Book Store for a nominal fee.

While this isn't a "genealogy" book, it does mention the early Texas Czechs who were part of this denomination. The European history provides information on those Moravians who settled in the U.S. (NC/PA).

Anyone in this group related or happen to have any info on this

But the big problems is probably attendance. When we were there on
Thursday, beside the four of us there were 5 other people in attendance.

Unfortunately there is no big draw for foreign made movies.

Hello from my family to yours!  A brief history of myself.....My name is Bobby Bohuslav and I was born and raised in the Moulton, Texas area. I went to work for IBM in Houston back in 1979.  My family and I moved to Tucson, Arizona about 8 years ago when I was offered a new job in IBM and settled in Vail. My wife is Sharon Grahmann from Hallettsville, Texas and we have five children.  Their names are April, Brent, LeAnne, Kayla, and Connor.
I was searching the web the other day looking for information on Robert Bohuslav who died in WWII in Northern Africa.  My father, Daniel Bohuslav, had named me after him when I was born.  This is when I came across your website and signed up!
Was wondering if anybody in the TexasCzechs group might have known him, associated with him, etc.?  Thank You!

Bobby

I found him at http://www.moravian-connection.com/master-p/p1980.htm#i19798
where it lists his wife as Veonika Tonistek, b. March 11, 1877.

His WWI Draft registration gives his name as Edward Frank Marek. He
registered in Crosby, Harris Co, TX. He gave his birthrate as Oct 29, 1878,
but did not give his birth.

He is in Precinct 2, Zavala County, TX in 1920, listed with wife "Vera" and
8 children.

None of this answers your question, but might give some clues.

Cindy Neal

Help!!. Looking for any information on Edward F. Marek born about
1878 and wife Veronika Tomascik. I know they are buried in Nada.
Anyone in this group related or happen to have any info on this
family group? I think they had nine children. I am most interested
in finding out who the parents of Edward F. Marek were.
