Oh yeah,...who were your grandparents? There are a lot of good
researchers here on the list, but we need names and dates in order to
help you.

Best way to start is to write down everything you already know, and
you'll surprise yourself with how much that is. Parents, aunts, uncles,
cousins, grandparents, grandaunts and uncles, second cousins, etc.

I definitely recommend a genealogy program, but some are better than
others. I prefer RootsMagic, (http://www.rootsmagic.com). A new
version is just now being released.

I'd avoid paying for information, as most of it is a scam. Research in
Czechoslovakia will cost, and I'd go with recommendations from the list
here on people that are reputable. But that's "on down the road". For
now, fill in as much information as you already know, and talk to as
many living relatives as you can. They too will "remember" more than
they think they do once they get started.

I started off, much like yourself, a little over 15 years ago, and
didn't think I knew much at all, but lo and behold, I remembered more
than I thought, my sister helped with that which I had forgotten, and
then aunts and uncles started popping up, and family bibles, and
newspaper articles, (mostly obits) with more names, and today, I have a
database of over 8,000 relatives. You will too, and it's a great legacy
to leave your family. I wish someone had done all of this before
everyone died off, a lot has been lost forever. But I've been able to
preserve much more that would have been lost in a few more generations.

Like I say, it's a great legacy to leave behind, and it's a very
rewarding process. Family reunions are great fun, and much information
can be gathered, be sure and find out if, and where one is. Or start
one yourself. Good way to "meet the family" living and dead.

Good luck, you will enjoy your search, I guarantee. It's a great
experience!

As soon as I got your email, I started looking through Aunt Estelle's (Hurtik nee Sulak) family tree to find the names you mentioned.

Knesek - my cousin Rudolph Sulak, a clockmaker in Wharton married Doroty Knesek on January 31, 1956

Marek -Lydia Marek was my uncle EJ Sulak's second wife.  That unlucky in love thing again!  I have no other information about her.

Jakubec - my uncle Ludvik (still living in Temple and a wealth of information although he is 93 years old) married Rose Jakubec in 1948.  They lived on the family farm in Rogers, Bell County.

I will be in Texas this June and plan to spend a week or so down near San Antonio and/or Houston - just depends on how long my money lasts!   It sure would be nice to meet some other relatives, especially those interested in all this.

Thanks again,
Leanna SulakMongan

Oh, thanks for asking.  My grandfather was Paul Sulak, born May 9, 1871 in Moravia, and my grandmother was Anna Kovar, born August 6, 1884.  They were married October 23, 1911 and died May 28, 1931 - murder/suicide, he shot her, then himself.

Also, thanks for reposting the other message.  You have given me hope!

Leanna,

Given the cause of death of your grandparents, you will no doubt find
a news article and obituary for them. Where did they live?
Regarding your trip to Texas, you might shoot for Houston first,
especially if you want to work on your genealogy. The Clayton
Library for Genealogical Research is one of the largest genealogy
libraries in the nation and is located at 5300 Caroline in downtown
Houston.

This posting is addressed mainly to Leanna.

I am related through Dorothy Knesek to Rudolph Sulak. My marriage
date for this couple differs by ten days from yours. According to
parish registers of Holy Family Catholic Church in Wharton, Texas,
they married on 21 Jan 1956. I have cousins that live and attend
that church to this day. Their surname is Kresta.

My records indicate that Rudolph Henry Sulak was born 10 Mar 1935;
his wife Dorothy Knesek was born 15 May 1936. They have three sons:
Alan, Glen, and James.

Dorothy Knesek is one of 13 children. Her parents were August "Gus"
Knesek and Carrie Gaydosek. I do not have a marriage date for her
parents, and if you can provide that information to me, I would much
appreciate it.

August Knesek was born 24 Feb 1895; his wife was born 28 Sep 1901.

Gus Knesek murdered his wife on 22 Nov 1948 in the Frenstat community
of Burleson County, Texas. He hanged himself in his jail cell on 15
Dec 1948.

The articles regarding this murder and eventual suicide are available
at:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~alvarez/

Gus Knesek's parents were Frederic Knezek and Catherine Hajek.
Catherine's obituary is also on the website above. Catherine was the
sister of my great-great-great-grandmother, Therezie Hajek
Berckenhoff.

I have a Joe KOVAR, m. Sep 30, 1919, to Fannie KABELA, b. Mar 2, 1895.

They had 4 boys, 1 girl, (sorry, no names, or dates).

Joe may be related to your Anna, which would tie your KOVARS to mine,
and give you a head start because I could give you all the 2nd, 3rd
cousins from them.

What a sad thing to happen in your family, leaving 10 children at home.  I hope all the children were able to stay together and be raised together by family.

Here are some links that may help.  I searched Ancestry.com for your grandparents, and since they are on the 1930 census in Bell County, I got these from the Bell County Archives.  Their website is http://www.rootsweb.com/~txbell/

I have a Lydia, which may, or may not be related. She could have been
married to JEZEK before/after your uncle. Or it may be a different "Lydia".

Descendants of Frank V. MAREK - May 6, 2004
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First Generation

1. Frank V. MAREK.

Frank V. MAREK and Ludmilla MAREK were married. Frank V. MAREK and
Ludmilla MAREK had the following children:

	 +2 i. Lydia MAREK (born on Apr 30, 1893).

Second Generation

2. Lydia MAREK was born on Apr 30, 1893 in Industry, Austin Co., TX.

Lydia MAREK and Louis P. JEZEK Sr. were married about 1912.

Also, meant to mention to look for alternate spellings in your searches.
Especially census records and records from Czechoslovakia. Many times
the people didn't speak english, and spelled out the name phonetically.
In the old country records were kept in latin, german, and czech,
depending on the date, and district. So you'll run across many variations.

Hi All,
Can we all band together to show our Moravian brother in France,
Jean-pierre, that Texas Czechs really are a friendly and helpful bunch?
I used the Google language tools and below is a translation of
Jean-pierre's information. If any of you have access to Leo Baca's
Passenger List books, could you look in them to see if you can find any
Matoska names? I did search the phone books last night and found about 11
listings for Matoska in Texas. I'll post those later.
In the meantime, let's show Jean-pierre a real Texas welcome!

Hello Jean-pierre,
It might be easier for you if you translated your French message
into English by using the Google language tools located at
http://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=fr .
I looked in the Czech phone book ( http://phone.quick.cz/ ) and
found that there are three Matoskas that still live in Prostejov. And
there are 2 Pituchovas that live in the Olomouc region (1 lives in
Prostejov). You might want to write a postcard to these people.
The National Bohemian Cemeteries (Ceske Narodni Hrbitov) were
started by members of the C.S.P.S. (Czechoslovak Benevolent Society) - a
fraternal insurance society. The new name of the CSPS is CSA (
http://www.csafraternallife.org/ ). They have a very nice library and you
could write to them for information about the Matoskas that immigrated to
Illinois.
Who is Paul Matoska and how is he related to your grandfather?
There are about 12 Matoskas listed in the Texas telephone book,
and many Kuchera/Kucera families also live in Texas.
Best wishes to you and your family.

Bonjour Jean-pierre,

Members,

Wow, what Rick posted about using Google to translate language is neat!
Wish there was a Czech language translator like that for free!

I wrote Jean-Pierre and Welcomed him to the TexasCzechs; hope he might be
able to translate his messages to English when posting to the list as some
may not be able to translate French messages, and some members may be kin,
etc. I told Jean-Pierre I assumed he has been to Olomouc as he isn't too
far away, but if he had not, I gave him the URL link to Yahoo photos where I
have 10 Olomouc photos posted, taken in 2000. Again, told him Welcome!

I would not be surprised if the Czech name Matous is a derivitative of
Matoska. In the Cz language, many times the oska after a name means it is
applied to the last name of an unmarried girl/lady.

Hi All,
Can we all band together to show our Moravian brother in France,
Jean-pierre, that Texas Czechs really are a friendly and helpful bunch?
I used the Google language tools and below is a translation of
Jean-pierre's information. If any of you have access to Leo Baca's
Passenger List books, could you look in them to see if you can find any
Matoska names? I did search the phone books last night and found about 11
listings for Matoska in Texas. I'll post those later.
In the meantime, let's show Jean-pierre a real Texas welcome!

Yesterday my cousin Linda Skalicky and myself took off on a venture to Halletsville, Plum, Shiner, Weimar, Schulenberg, Nelsonville, Fayetteville and a few other spots. We were hunting Rosenbaum, Shiller, Schiller, Lesikar, Stallmach, Janak, Strban, Supak and the Czech Brethren Church in Shiner we had seen pics of on this list.

Oh my what sites we saw. I never knew I had so many Janak kinfolks. And man oh man the Mikeska's.

Nobody had heard of the Brethren Church so we decided to stop in the library in Shiner. There I found the directions to the church. Wow what a site that was. Even more so to see the old SPJ Lodge on the corner.

We hit every Catholic Church and Czech Cemetery, Gift Shop, Kolache Shop from East Texas to Shiner. I think the best site of all (besides the big pork chops in Navasota) was the Hostyn Church. It was just a 1/2 mile off the beaten path and well worth the effort. You could really feel our ancestors at that spot. Out in the cemetery you could look down the hill and just imagine them working those fields. What a site !!! If you are ever near there, it is well worth the hour you will spend looking around.

I often thought of ya'll everytime I recognized a name from this list.

My best souvenier was finally finding the Prune Song. I have almost learned the rest of the words that have been missing from my version for many years.

Although I loved my trip, I dont want to see another cemetery for a LONG time. ( until my trip to Czech Republic). ; )

Judy

I hope your trip included the Ross Prarie church and cemetery, between
Fayetteville and Ellinger, (also called the CMB church). This area was
one of the first settlements in Texas, and has great records of many of
the first people to immigrate here from Czechoslovakia.

Judy,
What a trip.  I have a few names of above people and may be of help.

Louise Shiller (22Nov1896-unknown) buried in St. John's Catholic Cem, Deanville, TX.  Married Edward Maresh, dates unknown.  If you have dates I don't, will appreciate them.

Anna Schiller (unk-unk) married William E.Mikeska (unk-unk)
Anna Lesikar (1887-1944) married Josef Mikeska (1886-1938)  Josef was born in Granger, TX area and don't know if buried there or not. Their son is William E Mikeska, who married Anna Shiller above. I sense they are from the Burleson Cty area, as most of the families were.

I have 19 Supaks that begin around 1950 and last birth in the 80's.  Don't know if would be of any help - let me know if you would like to go into the list.

What was your great-great-grandfather's first name or age when he came to Texas?  The Texas Seaport Museum database contains quite a few Duseks, and several of them were families with children.  The arrival dates range from 1870 to 1914.

Just a note to the new folks and those who dont already know of this great site.
Visit http://www.tsm-elissa.com to search for your ancestors arriving at galveston.

In 1911 the United States Immigration Service built an immigration station on Pelican Island (the small island that creates the Galveston Ship Channel with Galveston Island). After being severly damaged by the 1915 hurricane, the station was decommissioned to a public health station which was entirely abandoned in 1950 and sold to the City of Galveston.

Galveston took on a new role as a port of entry. When the federal government replaced state administrations in processing immigrants at the turn of the century, efforts began to redirect the flow of immigration from the Northeast to Texas. Pelican Island became federal property, and the government constructed an immigration center and quarantine station there. In the Northeast, Jacob H. Schiffqv presided over the Galveston Movement,qv which tried to offset Taft administration efforts to restrict immigration. Between 1906 and 1914 nearly 50,000 immigrants arrived at Galveston, including Bohemians, Moravians (see CZECHS), Galicians, Austrians,qv Romanians, Swiss, English, Poles,qv Italians, Dutch, and some 10,000 Jews.qv By 1915 Galveston was considered a "second Ellis Island." The flow of immigration ceased in World War I,qv and the immigration center was demolished in 1972.
