>Demonstration Ideas:  Jelly making; arts & crafts (sad to say, I'm not sure what arts & crafts exactly are Czech in origin, but maybe there are others out there who know!), blacksmithing, soap-making, a Czech wedding or other party, butter churning, classroom where Czech students learn
about their new country and learn English, making sauerkraut or pickles, wine-making from wild Texas mustang grapes.  Any Czech glass-blowers out there?  Docents at each demo would perform the demo or act out the
scenario being represented...<

Hi Anita,

Thanks for the ideas. I have printed out your response and added it to my Project File for reference purposes. And, thank you for volunteering to help with the kolaches.

But, the real problem is finding folks who will actually come and do these things. Now I know that some of the other Czech-related festivities in Texas have some activities such as this. That is why I am asking folks to help me collect names and contact numbers for the individuals who undertake demonstrations and cultural exhibits AS WELL AS VOLUNTEERS TO UNDERTAKE DEMONSTRATION.

I will try to visit other festivals and make contacts myself; however, if people on this list would help, more could be accomplished.

Susan

Sorry! i just assumed every Czech knew what an "Ogar"
was! I wasn't aware it was a word unknown to those
outside a small area of Moravia. I just grew up
hearing my brothers & other young men called that!
So I apologize if I confused you, I was ignorant of
the details that TJ Slansky presented us with. But its
very interesting! See, because of this little fuss we
learned something we wouldn't have known before.

Anita,

You talk about Volunteering!!!  Wow, you should be the Volunteer Webmaster or whatever for the CHS!!!  Now, I am sure you are up at the top of list making kolaches (gotta be careful not to hurt any other feelings <G>) but if you happened to do any practicing on a few batches, send some to me and I'll guarantee you'll get an A+!  <G>

You mentioned butter churning in a previous message.  Know anyone that will be in Ennis Aug 3rd that might demonstrate butter making, or maybe a talk on how to formulate, etc.  Frank Mikula commented it would be great to have this, but the feelers I've put out has brought naught in reply <G>

Hope you will be in Ennis - will meet you if you are.

I am trying to get started on a family history of the Simecek family.  Bertha Simecek Firasek was the half sister of my mother Jennie Simecek Hranicky.  Bertha Simecek Firasek had a sister, Vlasta Simecek Baca, and a brother,  Julius Simecek. She had four half sisters, Jennie Simecek Hranicky, Viola Simecek Demmer, Helen Simecek Biedermann, and Ethel Simecek, three half brothers, Alfred Simecek, Raymond Simecek, and Frank Simecek.  Bertha's parents were Frank Simecek and Johonna Vyvyla Simecek.  Frand Simecek and second wife Agnes Bohac Simecek were the psa  parents of Bertha's half siblings,  I would appreciate hearing from any of the descendants of  Ludvik Firasek and wife, Bertha Simecek Firasek.

I don't know for sure if you are talking about "ogar"
or not, but if so, it simply means "boy" in Moravian.
If you'll read TJ Slansky's message from 5/29 you can
learn a bit more about it. I didn't realize it wasn't
a well known commonly used word among Czechs! I grew
up hearing it, so it came naturally to me. I used it
as the teens do "You go, girl" - mine was "You go,
boy". Except I said "You go, ogar", so...

Yes , cotton farming has changed a lot in the past year.  Those big compactors are called Module Builders.  They sure beat having to toss that cotton back and pack it.  Plus saves a lot in labor and time.  Tire flats and other problems.
As for the Boll Weevil Eradication program,  we are in one of those zones.  We voted for it.  The cotton farmers have lost millions in dollars from the boll weevil.  It only takes one puncture hole from a weevil to completely destroy, that single boll.  It doesn't take very many to do a lot of damage to a cotton crop.  We have had to spray a lot to try and control the boll weevil, before this program came into effect.  We would like to eradicate them completely.  There is some places that are completely eradicated in Texas and other states.  It would be less spraying and a big savings to the farmer.
Now if you are having problems with being notified, before they spray.  You send the BWE guys and the farmer that you are living next to,  a certified letter, stating that you would like to be notified 24 hours in advance.  You have to do this every year.  If they do not notify you, you have the right to notify the Texas Department of Agriculture.  I should now, because we have one neighbor that does this to us, but the letter has to be sent every year certified.  If we don't inform, she has a right to call the TDA on us.  Just some of the rules and regulations on spraying that ever farmer has to follow.
We use both cotton strippers on dryland cotton and cotton pickers on irrigated cotton.
My husband and his three brothers raise close to  3500 acres of cotton a year.  It is a long harvest.

Ahh, that's where I missed out. I must not have read TJ Slansky's
message cuz I don't recall seeing the word before your email.

I've never heard the word before, but that's not surprising since my Dad

Hi Mary,

I was wondering if you would have any comments since I know that you farm (grin).

As I said, things have really changed as far as the BWE folks being public oriented.  Our problems are always when the supervisor is ill or something such as that.  After the fields had to be sprayed a second day in a row (due to rain), the crop duster pilot called me and introduced himself. He said that he would notify me 24-hours in advance of any aerial application up wind from our house. He also said he would forward my name and phone number to the other pilots/firms that spray in our area so that they could notify me when they are going to spray.

And, yep, I know that the compactors are called. If things work out right, I'll try to capture the cotton harvest with the digital camera.  I might even write about "spontaneous combustion."

Mary, it was good to hear from you. Are you all as dry as we are?

Anita,

Thanks for offering to check for someone who might be interested.  I feel it will be some trouble to get a churn set up, mixture made, etc.

I'm from San Angelo, which is considered West Texas.  Believe Concho County CHS is having festival this coming Sat in Rowena, TX, which is between San Angelo and Ballinger.  Wish I could attend it but a little far for a days drive.

Yes, Anita would be great at my job, but I don't think she has time, with all her other volunteering!

Hi Sir John,

One of my first contacts will be with the Jourdan Bachman Pioneer Farm near Austin, Texas. The mission of the entity is to portray prairie life in the 1880's central Texas." I believe it is run by the Austin Historical Commission.  When I lived in Austin and my kids attended elementary school there they made trips to the pioneer farm and saw cows being milked and butter churned.  I think these folks will be an excellent resource.

So far, I do not have an e-mail contact for anyone there. I am in the process of sending them a letter on behalf of the TCHCC. If I get a contact number, I will share it with you BUT I don't know if we can get anything set up by August.

Hi Sir John,

I thought to myself, why not check the WWW. I have found so much other useful information there. So I did and I found step-by step instructions on a Gifted and Talented Education site. The full URL is at the bottom of this message. They have info on spinning too.

Sir John,

I do have the mechanical gear and wheel-driven butter churn. However, the glass jar base was broken years ago. The churn will need to be sanded and repainted. I think I can get my son to do this for us.

Does anyone have an idea where to get a glass jar of an old butter churn?

Butter Churning

The objective of this lesson is to taste freshly made butter and to make butter from cream as the pioneers would have done.
You will need a churn; 2 cups of fresh whipping cream which has sat in a cool place about three days; dash of salt; a bowl; and a spoon.

Pioneers used a wooden butter churn with a wooden dasher. If a small churn is unavailable, a glass one may still be purchased from Sears or Wards farm catalogs. A quart jar can also be used, as is, or converted to a churn. The dasher is made by nailing two flat, crossed sticks on the bottom of a dowel. A hole the size of the dowel's diameter is made in the cover of the jar.

Procedure:

1. Put the cream in the churn and work the dasher up and down (or shake the jar) for 20 minutes or more. First the cream will froth like whipped cream, then it will "break" (turn into a curdly mess). Finally, it will "gather" and small lumps of butter will form.

2. As the lumps begin to gather remove the butter and put it in a bowl. The buttermilk is poured out and may be drunk. The butter is squeezed with the back of a spoon to remove the excess water.

3. A dash of salt may be added if desired.
Taste great on warm homemade bread.

Susan,

Sounds like a good contact.  I have never heard of the Pioneer Farms.  Wish I had known about it as I would have visited it the two times I lived/worked in Austin.

Agree setting something up for Ennis probably is little late now.  Hard to believe what was 6 months away is now two months!

Sir Jan
