Sacred Sites Run Pinson Mounds to Milwaukee Mound   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #24 of 32 |
Thank you all for your part in the success of this project. And I
thank those that wanted to be there, but could not. A project such
as this takes many like you all.

Yesterday, at Aztalan Mounds State Park we hooked up with the Ho-
Chunk Native Cruzers. They are marathon runners that have gone from
La Crosse, WI to Effigy Mounds National Monument to Muscoda, Madison
and other sites with the Ho-Chunk Archeologist Jay Tolth. Jay has
taken these young runners on a tour as part of the Sacred Sites Run
and educated them about their history.
We are now running together eastward toward Milwaukee's Lake Park
Mound.

The Menominee Nation started a Sacred Sites Run on August 4, 2006
from Keshena, WI Menominee Indian Reservation. They ran further
south this week and will soon meet us at the Lake Park Mound.

The Ojibwe Nation completed a Sacred Sites Run from Lake Superior to
near the Mole Lake Ojibwe Nation Reservation.

In Milwaukee, the Mayor signed a proclamation on behalf of the
Sacred Sites Run.

Office of the Mayor
City of Milwaukee
Proclamation

Whereas: The Sacred Sites Run ends in Milwaukee during the Indian
Summer Festival on Saturday, September 9, 2006, and,

Whereas, The Sacred Sites Run has brought attention to Indian
burial mounds and other sacred mounds from south to north collecting
small amounts of soil from each site, and,

Whereas, The earthen mounds, such as the Lake Park Burial Mound,
stand as a reminder of the responsibility we have as inhabitants to
protect, care for, and preserve the resting place of those who came
before; and,

Whereas, Milwaukee will be the final gathering place of soils
collected along a journey that echoes the journey of the old mound
builders; and,

Whereas, The City of Milwaukee is proud to be the gathering place
of the soils collected on the Sacred Sites Run 2006, and commends
all community participants who recognize that we are all Earth
Keepers and we are all called to protect the sacred sites, and all
land, for future generations;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, TOM BARRETT, Mayor of the City of Milwaukee, do
hereby proclaim September 2006 to be

EARTH KEEPERS REMEMBRANCE MONTH

Throughout the City of Milwaukee
Tom Barrett
Mayor

To all the people associated with the Tenn. Ancient Sites
Conservancy and other individuals and organizations that helped, I
say;
Mvto to you all. Thank you so much and I wish you could be here to
see what you've all started.
Ben Yahola
