That can vary, as Ben mentions, I plan on starting at 60psi, I have been in
a room when an explosion has happened at 40 psi, so no way will I use the
PVC.
And Ben suggests using PVC in no pressurized areas, only place on Grims mock
up thats' possible is the barrel post chamber.
I am trying a steel pipe 8" nipple there for mine hoping for a different
resonance. (longest I could find at bLowes)
Gonna build after ER, I'll fill you all in when I can sperimant later
tonight.

I am alittle confused. by air cannon are we not talking about shooting a

shouldnt be used for more that 100 psi. well how big of air burst is
needed?

Depending on how much force you want and how far you want the blast
to go it can very greatly, Iwould say anywhere between 50-150 psi.
Actuall as long as the pvc isnt being used at a place when the air is
being pressureize it should work fine.

Ah fellow explosives decompression afficianado, makes me proud.
Folks who know me from the Halloween-L know my opinion on using compressed
air in any PVC, in few words, dont risk your life.
ABS is comporable in cost, and PSI rating, but onluy splits or bubbles on
failure, copper, steel or iron, doubtful it will burst, so far safer, but
cost goes up.
Just think how terrible you would feel if one of your guest was used thanks
to a piece of duct tape wrapped PVC let go.

If a PVC pipe filled with water at 90 psi were to
burst you'd have a leak. If the same pipe filled with
air at 90 psi burst you'd have flying shrapnel.
Imagine the following - heck try it out. Get out your
bike pump - draw the handle up so the pump chamber is
full of air. Plug or clamp the hose so the air can't
escape - press down on the handle as hard as you can.
You'll notice that the handle is spongy and you can
press it down quite a way as the air compresses to the
limit of your strength. Now - make sure your chin is
out of the way and suddenly release the handle. The
handle should pop up back close to it's original
position. The handle pops up because of the stored
energy in the compressed air.
Now fill your bathtub with water- put your bike pump
in the tub and hold it underwater. Push the handle
all the way down to expell all the air and then draw
it all the way up to fill the chamber with water.
Clamp or plug the end of the hose and press down on
the handle with all your strength. You'll notice that
the handle did not sink very far if at all. Now
suddenly let go of the handle - it should barely move
i.e. there is no or very little stored energy in the
compressed water.
>From this experiment we can observe that air is very
compressable and can store energy whereas water is
virtually uncrompressable and stores very little
energy.
What does all this mean - it means that the same
volume of air (a bike pump full) can be squeezed into
a smaller area than can a bike pump full of water.
Some of the energy expended/used in the squeeze
process is stored in the compressed air and can be
used later to move objects i.e. make PVC fly like
shrapnel.
Consider this - fill a ballon with water and pop it -
it just kinda splushes and gets your hands wet. Fill
another ballon of similar size and shape with air then
pop it - it explodes and makes a large sound - why?
because the volume of air compressed in the ballon is
greater than the volume of water (essentally
uncompressed water) so it explodes with more force
when released all at one time.
Hope this helps.

It helps but I've ruined my bicycle pump....
You're quite correct, and I've tinkered with powering some simple props with
bungee cords that are triggered by an actor, then reset by them after the TOTs
pass on to the next scare, for the very reason that pneumatics can be dangerous
if you don't really go "by the book" on the safety, just like working with
pyrotechnics. There are no shortcuts.

Hope this helps.

scott, this year will be my third year haunting. It started out as a halloween
party for the kids and keeps growing every year. My first project was a trashcan
trama.( a witch poping out of a trashcan) it worked on remote, it took me 2
months to get it working. hahhaa. but after making the cylinder out of pvc,
working out the air silinoid and exhaust, I was hooked.

Hey
im new to the list but not to technical work. Im an electronics tech.
and am working for the Eleventh Hour.
Wrapping the Pipe in duct tape does work but the problem with doing
that is you cant tell when the pipe is cracking. It will still
explode but the duct tape will stop the pipe from shooting all over
the room.

The hallow-links list is sorely in need of updating, of which I am almost
doing (been revamping all of Minions Web)
But there are resources that arent on Monster list, and from my last
persusal of ML resources that arent on H-LL

I've got an analog Sony and a digital Canon and the Sony is superior for night
shots. I know this isn't a scientific sampling, just the experience I've had.

Hi Everyone,
I'm a member of the Feature Creatures (www.featurecreatures.com) of
Central Ohio. I have a technical computer background; but only the
start of technical aspects of haunted attractions. I'm highly
interested in this forum! I don't expect to contribute much; but
really appreciate having this specific forum to learn from and
occasionally ask very basic technical questions.
I'd be happy for any responses or information that anyone that can
point me to somewhere on the web for resources. I'd like to ask if
you techies have any favorite websites (for research or shopping)?
I'd like to contribute the one resource, which is a product, that
I'm familar with: the HAG (Haunted Ambiance Generator) sound
engineering software. Okay, it's the only one I've used but it is
easy to use for someone without a background. I'd be interested in
others' HAG experiences, reviews and/or references to similar
products.
The website is: http://www.13trackshalloweencd.com. The demented
man behind this is Dave, a heck of a nice guy - and I'd give the
technical support for this product and outstanding rating! I had
computer issues at the last minute of September, and Dave spent all
the time I needed to get the soundtracks for the haunt done for
opening in October.
Thank you Cory for the information to join, posted on the FrightFX
Group (makeup interest).
Best regards,
Neena
Time to pass on the debate, pro/cons, etc of forums, since this is a Prop
Builders list, not a forum discussion list.
Last relevant topic I recall from MoM was the fiberglass encasing of Grims
making or the spud/air cannon.
Anyone know if the fiberglass resins would attack the PVC he is using
reducing the integrity of the wall strength and safety?
Later today I intend to visit Lowes and procure a bit of ABS to take away
the fatigue issue (rather have it just blow a split thru the wall than
explode into shards if it fails under pressure) and see if a multi port
exhausting solenoid will let it operate with some tie ins to automation.

In the meanwhile, hopefully this will fill the gap, and act as a compliment

Yeah, I know the cam sucks, bought 3 on a lark when they screwed up pricing
2 years back (got all 3 for 60 bucks).
You tried an extra IR (infra-red illuminator? Did it help any in low/no
light situations?
I was considering trying IRs to get some useful vids of the kids as they go
thru the haunt up to the door, some of the faces on these kids are to die
for (and some of the adults are classic too).
Hmmm, now that I think about it, I believe I have a single IR in my cache of
stuff.
off to the shop to see if I remember right or the alzhiemers is kicking in.
