Well yeah they do "GET IT" in one form or another....  ;-)   But no mostly the
lightweight plastic promo mugs.. As they go high in the air they kind slow down
and don't hit with a lot of force..  One BAD idea... BEADS... yeah real bad
there.... Mostly they break apart and then it pretty much becomes a very large
bore SHOTGUN...    Loads of fun for us but funny a lot of people don't want to
come back and play after being "BEADED" in that manner...

Decent price and readily available from Mcmaster-Carr, part number 6646K23 .

2 way solenoid valves which are readily available up to 2" npt and bigger are
another option.

Along with butterfly valves which were also mentioned, can be either manual or
air piloted.

I have acquired 2" Asco Red Hat solenoid valves, which are about $500 new, for
$20 at a local industrial surplus store before. Watch ebay.

Simple.. I use what I call a red hat valve.. metal construction, large enough
opening and fast acting.. I use them on all the air canons I build.. I shoot
confetti, t-shirts, mugs, or whatever from them.. And at Halloween they are good
for just a simple air scare..  I am not at work yet but I will get you the model
and part number for them and send that...

Not that I've tried it but I understand that butterfly valves work
for this application.

Happen to have one sitting on the floor here. Air activated. Looks
like it would work but at 4" dia prolly too big for your
application.

I am looking for a metal Quick Exhaust Valve
that can more a lot of air quickly and handle
some decent pressure. Above 40 psi but below 90.

I am building an air cannon with a metal storage
chamber. 1" maybe 1.5" should do it. Any suggestions
on where to pick one up? It will be used to launch various
things.

I know the irrigation valve option but I want something
a bit more robust.

Thanks,
Mike

Please keep in mind this is a technical list, not a chat group, if thats what
you seek, join a list like Halloween-L.

Of course a certain amount of banter is acceptable within the replies of your
post. Don't just blurt out - me too, or agreed - I believe you get the point.

Subject lines:
Remember to change the subject line if you are straying from the original
thread. Please change the subject line if you are on digest, as "Digest 1044"
means nothing to anyone.
If you want an answer to a question, use a descriptive subject line. "Help
Me" is bad subject line. "Casting small parts" is a good subject line.
Subject lines affect whether or not people even read your message, and affect
people searching the archives for help at a later date.

Trim messages:
Especially if you are receiving messages in digest form. By the same token,
quote enough so we know what you are responding to.

Please do -NOT- post virus warnings. This has been hashed to death on other
lists.

Regarding "For Sale" items. You may make general Items for sale announcements.
OT sale ads, links, uploads, etc. will be treated as spam and may result in your
removal from the list and ban.

Reasons for banning include:
NO FLAMING (arguing, belittling other members, intimidating others, and
harassment), period.
No Foul Language, this is a group with members of all ages.
No Shouting (posts in all caps).
Spamming the message board, links and or files pages of our
group, spammers will be treated with all the respect they deserve.
No politics - PERIOD
Ignoring previous warnings - this really ticks me off - you will immediately be
moderated.
Regularly acting in an inappropriate manner.

When you see a post with ADMINISTRATORS WARNING in the subject, drop it, no
comments, no rebuttals, just let it go, further posts in response after an
ADMINISTRATOR WARNING will result in a ban, with no warning.

If you have any doubt about sending a post because you are concerned its a chit
chat or blurt, sit on it a for a while, review it, and then post if you
absolutely think its useful to the rest of the group.
Please refrain from off-topic (non prop related) posting.

Please keep a copy of this in your TI messages folder for future reference.

All,

While there are a lot more expensive solutions, Light O Rama has an interesting
option.

I ran into an unusual item this past weekend at a resort in Southern
California.

Small trees around patio areas had the usual arrays of white minilights
sparkling in the night. But then I saw this drrripp of bright blue-white fall
through a tree canopy out of the corner of my eye! And again, in another tree,
and again and again, every few seconds. Looking closer, they were what appeared
to be acrylic tubes, maybe 18" long, with a string of LEDs. At intervals, a set
of LEDs would light, then slide down the string in maybe 300 mS, stopping with
the bottom 3 lit, for another brief ment.

VERY cool looking, and an interesting project, but I'd like to find out more
about the commercial version. Anybody hear of anything like these? Any
suggestions for good search terms?

That's pretty terrifying, CK fixtures are some of *the best* out there, I wonder
what the Galaxia markup is all about.

While sort of deviating from the topic, the best LED fixture I've ever used (and
most expensive):

I was reading a comparison by a ColorKinetics user.
He found it was less than half the price of the Galaxia system.
He also stated that the software was pretty simple to achieve comparable
effects.

Either way, both seem pretty cool.

Yeah thats what I thought at first too, the Phillips iCove or whatever it's
been rebranded after Phillips bought out ColorKinetics.

I love the iCoves, but the Galaxia system looks like it would be easier to
achieve the same effect for probably half the price.

That was one, there was 1-2 more....
Galaxia at 9 bills before any lights is a bit step IMO.
But very freaking cool.

I bet there is a pretty decent poor mans version to be made

Possibly, but these were compact, and had the look of an independent unit.

Oh, that I can well imagine!
Was thinking of a re-make, but it would be nice to see some detailed specs

I use these on my props. Very small (< 2"), TTL output. Been buying from this
vendor on ebay.

I use them with the Prop-1 which reads them as input.

I believe this vendor can customize based on your needs:

Sorry to be this far afield, but I was hoping someone here might have
some experience they could share. Summary:

A guy at my company got laid off and the "powers that be" decided that
they would dump that person's job responsibilities on me. :( If only
they had also dumped his paycheck on me, I'd be happier, but I digress.. :)

Anyway, the ex co-worker of mine was responsible for creating and
maintaining the MSI deployment package for the product we sell. I've
been going over the notes and tools he left and frankly, I'm pretty lost. :(

The big sticking point is we need to update the MSI to include Windows
Vista, Windows 7 and Server 2008. The packaging tools he was using don't
support these newer OS's so I'm faced with re-architecting the whole
thing or trying to reverse engineer what he did and/or find new tool
chains to build new MSIs.

So, before I re-invent the wheel, I was hoping someone here is an MSI
expert and that they might take pity on me and help me get rolling on
this project. Feel free to contact me directly at vern@... so as to
keep the discussions here more Halloween related.. :)

ADVthanksANCE!

Vern

PS: Note the end result must be MSI, not nullsoft installer or other
package manager.

Mike,
I would think that it would probably be fairly easy to find a few dozen such
units already on the market. If I were designing a new product I probably
would not "recreate the wheel" on this portion of it.

Subject: Designing a radio receiver circuit?

Not really halloween related but definitly technical:)

Does anyone on the list have the skills to or know anyone who can design a
small (very small - think small pager size) radio receiver that's
always listening
for a code received via a very specific radio signal and light up an
LED when it does.
Ideally using surface mount technologies and very low current usage.

Or perhaps you can point me to a place/forum to start my search for someone
who can? A friend and I have a new product idea that we want to
explore creating...
building a prototype circuit and then get it professionally made.

Beyond design contacts/resources I'd also love to get any info on
taking a designed circuit and
having a decent production run done (1000 units) to create basically a
final product.. in the US,
China, etc.

Thanks,
Mike

Yep that's it.
there was a RPM sensor that told the pic the speed and home position.
This raster is modulated by turning on/off the laser beam. T

To answer both latest posts, I suggested two cylindrical lenses in order
to get an expander that would form a beam with a rectangular
cross-section, rather than a circular one. A simple convex lens would
spread the beam on both axes equally. A rectangular beam could be shaped
to fit the word mask, placed close to the lens aperture. The angle of the
expansion would then determine the magnification over the distance to the
screen.

If you are just trying to illuminate a static pattern, you could
start with a laser level that projects a line. They a single mirror
that moves back and forth will project a rectangle of light.

Rather than cut out the words, I would probably print the words you
want to illuminate in reverse (white letters on black background) buy
printing with a laser printer on transparency material.

Well... A cylinder is curved along one axis, so you could curve the glass
along both axes... which would result in an ordinary convex lens. I'm not
sure that buys you much: You'd lose all of the coherence of the laser beam,
and just have a fairly ordinary--albeit monochromatic--light source. I'm not
even sure how sharp the edges would be at that point. You might have to add
another lens to focus it, yadda yadda yadda...

But, if you've got the time and the parts, couldn't hurt to find out!
