Actually witnessed this at Gettysburg. The ranger, while giving his
presentation, asked a child, climbing on a monument, to please get down. Mom
gets indignant (and I guess embarrassed) and said, “What’s the big deal, the
monument survived the battle, what makes you think his sneakers are gonna ruin
it”. My missus gave me an elbow to the rib – I couldn’t stop laughing.
Ranger told me afterwards “I tried to maintain myself, but almost bust out
myself when I looked over at you”.

But it sure plays up to one of the questions the rangers do get a lot... "Why
are there no bullet holes in the monuments?" and "Why did they fight in national
parks?"

SHAF announcement....

Save Historic Antietam Foundation Inc. (SHAF) is proud to announce the recipient
of its first Dr. Joseph L. Harsh Memorial Scholarship. The winner’s research
will be presented at a free seminar at Antietam National Battlefield sponsored
by SHAF on September 8, 2012. This award was created in honor of Dr. Harsh, a
professor at George Mason University, an award-winning author on Confederate
strategy ... in the Maryland Campaign and member of SHAF. The purpose of the
Scholarship is to further knowledge on the battle of Antietam and Maryland
Campaign, and it is open to all applicants. The first award recipient is Daniel
Joseph Vermilya of Kirtland, Ohio. Dan is a seasonal ranger at Antietam National
Battlefield. His topic will be “The Strength, Composition, and Experience of
the Army of the Potomac at the battle of Antietam,” which will also be
submitted to SHAF as a publishable article. Dan’s research is based on primary
sources, and will be conducted extensively at the Antietam Battlefield library
and the National Archives.

There were several very strong applications, and the selection process was quite
difficult. After long deliberation the selection committee decided to also fund
a proposal by Susan Rosenvold , the Director of Operations and Education, Pry
House Field Hospital Museum at Antietam National Battlefield. Susan is an
authority on the life and services of Clara Barton, and her proposal was to
identify and locate the places on and around the Antietam Battlefield where
Barton worked and cared for the wounded. Susan listed an impressive number of
sources she intends to consult to complete her project, and she, too, will
present her findings at the SHAF Seminar in September. The results of her
research will also be published. Because of the merits of her proposal and the
experience she brings to the project the selection committee decided to award
Susan a special SHAF Sesquicentennial Award for Scholarship.

Additional information on the research papers and the free September 8, 2012
Antietam seminar will be posted this spring on SHAF’s website ( www.shaf.org
).

I'm well aware that there was one report written for the entire Philadelphia
Brigade, but am wondering if Colonel DeWitt C. Baxter of the 72nd PA might have
written one for the regiment which wasn't published in the Official Records.
Around 15 years ago, Broadfoot published a supplement to the O. R.s which
included such previously unpublished reports, but there weren't many for
Antietam. I recall there being one for the 10th Maine and another for the 19th
Indiana. If any of our members have a copy of these books would you mind
checking for me? I've searched a few Philadelphia papers from the period, and
don't see one published. It's a long shot, but any published information about
the 72nd PA at Antietam would be useful. Thanks very much, and Happy Easter to

Scott,
Does it have to be published information? Several people from the 72nd wrote
letters to the Battlefield Board. Would you be interested in that?

Tom, thanks for the response. Anything to do with Captain Henry A.
Cook of Company I would be much appreciated. Later in the war, he
commanded the 72nd, and might have participated in veterans
organizations. That part of his life is kind of fuzzy. Scott

Scott,

I found nothing in the OR Supplement pertaining to the 72nd PA or Cook related
to Antietam. I can give you the record of events for Co. I for that period but
like the other companies nothing noteworthy.

Does anyone know of unpublished sources, particularly soldiers' letters, about
the participation of the 102nd New York at Antietam? As you can see, my
particular interest is Captain Merwin Eugene Cornell. So far, this has been the
best source:

Ontario Republican Times, Canandaigua, NY Wednesday October 15, 1862, Pg. 3

"The brigade consisted of four regiments, 102nd NY, 3rd Maryland, and the 109th
[detached from the brigade, and did not participate in the battle] and 111th
Pennsylvania. They proceeded until within about 200 feet of the woods, when the
rebels poured a terrible volley into their very faces. The right of the line,
composed of the Pennsylvania and Maryland regiments, were thrown into confusion,
which communicated itself to the 102nd - Capt. CORNELL, with a quick eye, seeing
the crisis, threw himself to the front, waved his sword and called to his men,
"Don't falter; don't fall back. Come on boys, follow me," and thus - "foremost
fighting, fell."

While in advance in full dress, a regulation uniform, he presented a conspicuous
mark. A rebel bullet pierced his brain, he threw up his arms, reeled, fell in
the arms of one of his men, who sprung forward to receive him, and died without
a groan. The brigade rallied, drove the rebels from the wood and beyond and
held the ground thus gallantly won."

Let me know if you come across any mention of a Nellie King who served in the
102nd New York with her brother. I think it was in Captain Avery's Company.

Scott & Bill,
In the Gould Papers there are quite a few letters from members of the 102nd NY.
Gould even wrote a summary of the regiment's experience at Antietam which
mentions Cornell being "shot in the head by a sharpshooter." There are too many
for me to read tonight, I am in the midst of grading research papers, starting
final exams Wednesday, but I can get to them later on. WIll be happy to provide
copies of anything of interest. Let me know if ther is a pressing deadline,
etc.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your generous offer. There's no deadline for the material.
Since I've acquired the Cornell image I've thought about writing
something about Stainrook's Brigade at Antietam. Previously, I was
leaning towards Goodrich's. Small, often overlooked, brigades.

OK, will get to it when I can. Agreed, Greene's whole division gets too little
attention. You'd be surprised how many guys wrote Gould thinking that Goodrich
was Mansfield. They saw a guy on horseback they did not know who got shot and
assumed it was Mansfield.

Hi Tom,

Thanks for your generous offer. There's no deadline for the material.
Since I've acquired the Cornell image I've thought about writing
something about Stainrook's Brigade at Antietam. Previously, I was
leaning towards Goodrich's. Small, often overlooked, brigades.

for me to read tonight, I am in the midst of grading research papers, starting
final exams Wednesday, but I can get to them later on. WIll be happy to provide
copies of anything of interest. Let me know if ther is a pressing deadline,

the participation of the 102nd New York at Antietam? As you can see, my
particular interest is Captain Merwin Eugene Cornell. So far, this has been the
best source:

Tom,

Thanks, There is no deadline. The young lady who claimed to be a soldier
corresponded with Pauline Cushman (according to Cushman's 1865 biography). It is
just one of those "rest of the story" items.

Two weeks ago, I headed for Antietam for some hiking and to join in on the
Ranger-led hike of French’s Division.

In the early morning, I headed for Snavely’s Ford and here are some photos,
plus a few of the Antietam farmsteads.
