Harry,

Not very specific, but I've read that he lived northwest of the church, not very
far away.

I am surprised Steve Recer has not chimed in as I thought he might know. I
will ask John Schildt, who does not subscribe to this list. My guess is that
since so many of the Dunkers fled to the Manor Church north & west of Sharpsburg
I suspect Long might have lived near there and served both congregations. Just
a guess.

Harry,

Here's some information that places David's Long's 1862 residence northwest of
Sharpsburg near St. James. It's not specific, but may give you some leads. This
info was found at:

http://prweb0.voicenet.com/~pmargush/longdl00.htm

"Elder Long lived some little distance north west of the Sharpsburg church, and
mainly west of the manor. His farm home was along Saint James run, approximately
one mile as the crow would fly south of Saint James, or two miles by the present
road. He had some little distance to drive that September morning [9/14/1862],
but as this was the customary way of travel, thought little of it...The Longs
took title to some 200 acres in 1831. It was a part of the Conococheague Manor,
a tract owned by General Samuel Ringold. He had owned over a thousand acres and
had built three large manor houses. One was built where the St. James School now
stands. The original burned in 1926, leaving only the front entrance standing.
One was built on the farm now known as the Beckley farm, on the Sharpsburg Pike,
and one started upon the farm now owned by J. C. Corwell just up on the hill
from the old Long farm. This last house was started by Samuel Ringgold for his
daughter, but her untimely death caused the abandonment of the project. It was
completed by others. It was on this farm that John Reichard, a relative and
close neighbor, lived while David Long was living on his adjoining farm."

The folowing website contains a photo labeled "The David Long Home"

http://rockhay.tripod.com/peace/dunkerchurch/ankrum/preacher.htm

It also states:

The Longs took title to about two hundred acres of land; it was part of the
Conococheague Manor, a tract owned by General Samuel Ringgold. Their home was
like the average home of that day - built to accommodate both family and guests,
for all of whom there was ample room. Many were the Brethren who were
entertained in the Long home. During the battle of Antietam this house was
within range of both armies; although the soldiers tramped over the farm,
damaging it as they went, little damage was done to the house. One day a cannon
ball penetrated the east wall of it. As this sketch is being written the owners
of the Long farm are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Shaw.

150 years ago today, Brig. Gen. Joseph K. F. Mansfield is in command at Camp
Butler on Newport News Point. His men are witness to the debut of the CSS
Virginia, as she wreaks havoc on wooden Union warships.

A Union sailor notes : "It looked like a half-submerged crocodile intent on
evil".

CSS Virginia rams USS Cumberland below the waterline and she sank rapidly. There
is a flag of truce as CSS Virginia seeks surrender of USS Congress. However, one
of Virginia's supporting vessels fires on Camp Butler, including Mansfield's HQ
tent.  Mansfield's men fire back, wounding CSS Virginia's Flag Officer Franklin
Buchanan.

After setting the Congress on fire (with tide going out, darkness coming), CSS
Virginia heads back to Sewell's Point, determined to finish job tomorrow.

Mansfield sends this telegram describing the scene from Camp Butler:

"We want powder by the barrel. We want blankets sent up tonight for the crews of
the Cumberland and Congress. The Merrimack has had it all her own way this side
of Signal Point and will probably burn the Congress now aground with white flag
flying and our sailors are swimming ashore."

It all happened 150 years ago today at Hampton Roads, VA.

Tom, we always stay at the Red Roof in Williamsport. Decent and cheap,
you can cut across the back roads to Sharpsburg. You can be in
Hagerstown at the mall in just a few minutes from there as well. Check
the net for coupons.

Was informed that the grave belonging to Lieutenant Colonel John L. Stetson,
who was killed at Antietam, has been recently vandalized. It is at
Plattsburgh's Riverside Cemetery.  Vandals apparently used a saw to cut through
the brass pipes which formed an ornate fence around the perimeter of the family
plot, probably for the scrap value of the metal.

Hi, Scott.

Per the AOTW site, the Madison Light Artillery (LA) and Rowan (NC) Artillery
were equipped with 24-pdr. Howitzers.

Steve,

You are the man! Recently I bought a CDV taken in Baltimore of a Federal
sergeant with a 24 lb. Confederate cannonball at his feet. The soldier's
name on the back of the carte is indistinguishable. However, I wondered if
there was any possibility of it being a relic from the Maryland Campaign.
Now I have my answer.

Thanks so much for the trouble

Glad to have helped, Scott. On a related note, a few years ago I stopped by the

recovered near Turner's or Fox's Gap.

Tom is correct. There were no 30 Lb Parrots on either side. 20 Lb were
the largest rifles used.

The 30 is a monster, 4500 lb tube. We just cast a replica at our foundry.

Scott,

The largest spherical shells used during the Maryland Campaign were the
32lbers. There was only one battery that had them. I have found a few
pieces on the Shepherdstown Battlefield towards the western side. It looks
as though they were firing from Ferry Hill. The closest 30lb Parrott guns
were on Maryland Heights overlooking Harper's Ferry.

Excellent History Channel material. I was disappointed that they did
not cover the annual movement of the monuments to storage for the
winter. I was also surprised and saddened that they did not note the
fact that Buster is NOT listed on the 20th Maine monument.

I suppose a future show will cover all the unmarked graves located in
the East woods at ANB, marked by the small, white cylinders.

That was a great piece of satire,  Some people on youtube took it seriously
though,

But it sure plays up to one of the questions the rangers do get a lot... "Why
are there no bullet holes in the monuments?" and "Why did they fight in national
parks?"
