In Georgia, high school teachers have 3 days to teach the American Civil War and
in some states, it is taught in middle schools only -- to 10-year-olds.

Go get 'em Tom!!!!!!

Got to hear Tom Clemens give a great talk on preservation and the need to
teach CW history at the CWPT's Teachers seminar today.

Tom, many teachers were commenting on what a great job you did. Also,
presenters at both break out sessions that I went to in the afternoon referred
back to your talk - so you definitely made an impression.

   Thanks again,

   Paula

Paula,
Thank you for the kind words, it is greatly appreciated. You already knew much
of what I said, but it is kind of you to pass on the comments. Thank you.
They expect to have the hotel open by December, or thereabouts. We saw Bruce
Wilder doing some of the work last week. (He is a carpenter and also co-owner
with his wife, Nora Roberts.)

I have been trying to respond to this post for over a week now. It
bounces back to me as undeliverable. Here is my final attempt:

I recollected reading about this in John Priest's book, " Antietam:
The Soldiers' Battle" a few years back. I pulled the book and located
the reference but it credits the bee's disturbance to the 130th P.V.I.
who broke down the Roulette farm fence in this manner...." Rushing
across the open ground, the 130th Pennsylvania quickly smashed the
picket fence bordering the orchard to splinters with its rifle butts.
The air buzzed and whirrled with thousands of enraged honey bees,
after the bumbling Pennsylvanians disturbed their hives on the eastern
end of the lane. The bees, as Private Hemminger put it, "urged them
forward."

the citation was credited to the John D. Hemminger, Co. E., 130th PA.
Diary, September 16 and 17, 1862, located in the Michael Winey
Collection at the U.S. Military College at Carlysle, Pa.

Since the 132nd PVI was in formation to the rear of the 130th and to
the left, might it be possible that the bees were disturbed by the
130th as they entered the Roulette Orchard and that the 132nd then
received the brunt of the bees afterwards? There is no mention of any
artillary rounds destroying the bee hives but this may have occured
after the 130th left the grounds and were already advanced to the area
in front of the sunken road.

Are there any "authentic" recreated Civil War units in the Washington
DC metro area (Northern Va or suburban Maryland) that are more focused
on living history (educating the public and themselves)and shooting
(as in the N-SSA) than re-enactments? If so, contact me off-line. I
am interested in learning more.

Mr. Franks,

I've been looking for similar units for some years and have found none.
It seems that N-SSA units concentrate on shooting only. My wife and I
have attended several national skirmishes at Winchester and I have
talked to some members but found none doing both.

Gettysburg's terrain as more of the Sharpsburg area is cultivated  This seems
more of the area behind Fed lines in PA rather than a lot in Sharpsburg.  two

Does this particular stereoview of which you are curious about

The evidence on the back suggests that the series starts with
Gettysburg (at least through #119) and then includes Antietam and other
sites. That would put #108 in Gettysburg.

Stephen,

After extensive searching, I found only one mention of McPherson. Interestingly
it was a person also seeking more info on him.

A person offered the info below:

The 1890 City Directory listing McKeesport does have what you are looking for in
it. It states that his business is at 605 Locust St. & that he is the
photographer. His residence is at 307 9th St., McKeesport. That would not be far
from the business address.

Hmmm. Well, since all it indicates is some sort of Union Army
reserve location, I wonder which location and which Corps? I do
know that the Sixth Corps was held in reserve behind the Round
Tops and in the area of the Taneytown Road. So, if we could know
which areas were designated as Reserve Areas, that might help.

Also, in the same vein, I wonder if Frassanito has any similar
type photos in his books about Gettysburg "then" and "now"?????

Could it be looking west from the area of the Taneytown Road, perhaps
between the present day Howe Ave and the Blacksmith Shop Rd? It looks
like perhaps the southern flank of Big Round Top begins to ascend from
the left in both images of the stereographic view. I think 6th Corps
and the artillery reserve were in that general location.

Could be, Brian. Good guess. My thought is that the area is now well
grown, but the terrain would be the same. Worth a look.

Dave:
While I was attending the seminar, a friend of mine was checking out all the
small local museums and gems around Hagerstown. There are lots of them. You
might want to check out these web sites:
http://www.marylandmemories.org/index.html, (if you go to this site, you can
have them send you a great package of brochures. There is an interesting
Maryland - off the beaten path booklet. This refers to all of Marylan. Also,
http://discoverystation.org/TransportationGallery.html. I know he really
enjoyed the C and O Canal in Williamsport - Models of canal boats, pictorial
history, memorabilia, etc.
Willamsport Visitor Center: 205 West Potomac Street, Williamsport, MD
301-582-0813 and the Hager House and the Hagerstown Roundhouse (that doesn't
have a roundhouse anymore) http://www.marylandmemories.org/museums.html

I want to go back and just check out the sites that I have missed before.

Seeing Paula's post about the Boonsborough Museum, it made me wonder
what else I'm missing. I'm going back to the field in late October,
what is on everyone's must see list for that area? Where is a favorite
place to stay?

Dave
