This may not technically be a proper post but please indulge me.....

If the SHAF hike to Elk Ridge is postponed due to weather could someone please
post the info or privately email me? I was planning to attend but I would like
to save the 2 hour ride if its cancelled!

Thanks in advance,

Hi Folks,

I wish I knew more about Cavalry operations on the Maryland Campaign ...

I'm doing some more map work, translating parts of Carman/Cope for the
web (http://aotw.org/maps.php?map_number=main). Just now, I'm looking
at the vicinity of the West Woods as Sedgwick's Division hit about
9:30 am on the 17th. I have Confederate cavalry positions generally
indicated on and near Hauser's Ridge, but not identified by unit.

I'd like to assume these are all of Fitz Lee's Brigade, as Hampton
reports he arrived at Sharpsburg sometime during the day on the 17th,
and I'm pretty sure Robinsons's (Munford) Brigade was at the far,
southern end of the field near Antietam Creek.

Does anybody out there have more specific documenation on this? Gen
Stuart's report is very vague, and I don't have one from Fitz Lee.
I'm trying to get to the Regiment level for the horsemen, and by
battery for the artillery accompanying, if possible. I'd like to at
least confirm the Brigade!

Anyone?

Thanks in advance,
Brian

It's Robertson's Brigade, under Munford, of course, not Robinson.

I have the Sears, Preist and Harsh books on the battle and Preist's
book on South Mountain. What else would the group recommend? Now,
when I'm at Antietam, where is the best place to buy it? I like to
buy a book on the battle when I get to it.

I expect to be there in late June.

Pretty much the gift shop at the Visitors Center is your best choice most
likely in Sharpsburg. However if you're planning on a side trip to Harpers
Ferry (Highly recommended) then the bookstore there is much larger with a
better selection.

See NPS website at http://www.nps.gov/anti/ for weekend hikes.

See http://store.yahoo.com/antietammuseum/ for Antietam bookstore.

BLUE & GRAY MAGAZINE: the Visitor Center has copies of the issues focusing on
Antietam. Each is well worth purchasing. Subjects include West Woods, Crampton
’s Gap, Hood’s Attack, etc.

DISASTER IN THE WEST WOODS by Marion Vince Armstrong.
Fairly new tactical study limited to Sedgwick’s assault into West Woods. I
recommend it.

The MONUMENTS AT ANTIETAM book is nice to have when looking for the stories
behind the various monuments in the park.

The TRAILHEAD GRAPHICS map of Antietam is about $9 and a great reference tool.

The BURNSIDE’S BRIDGE book is a decent micro-study of action at the bridge.

The book on Crampton’s Gap battle (I have it but can’t recall title) is
detailed account of that battle. I recall some comments about having occasional
errors.

Kathleen’s Ernst’s TOO AFRAID TO CRY examines the impact of the battle on
local civilians. If this interest you, this book is the perfect source.

BIVOUACS THE DEAD by Steven R. Stotelmyer
Great book that includes the histories & rosters of Antietam National
Cemetery, Washington Cemetery, Mt. Olivet Cemetery, and Elmwood Cemetery. Not a
study
of the battle but interesting reading about post-battle burials.

I just finished McPherson’s CROSSROADS OF FREEDOM ANTIETAM and found is just
okay and too short. It’s puts the Antietam campaign in perspective but
provides merely overview of the campaign.

I recommend that you get the various free brochures at the VC on South
Mountain, Cornfield Trail hike, etc.

I heard two Gettysburg guides (Gary Adelman & Tim Smith) are soon to release
an Antietam photo-study.

No further word on Gettysburg Ranger Scott Hartwig's writing of an Antietam
book..

Without question, get Jay Luvaas & Harold Nelson's "US Army War College
Guide to the battle of Antietam". The books you list are great books
that overview the campaign/battle, but this book is a tour book,
complete with driving instructions. It includes Harper's Ferry and S
Mountain (with driving instructions between all 3 sites).

Good book and maybe I should have paid more attention to the driving
instructions. On my recent visit I decided to take Harpers Ferry Rd from
Sharpsburg to Harpers Ferry. Somehow (I have no idea how) I ended up getting
off Harpers Ferry Rd and onto a narrow winding road that went along the
Potomac river. Rather a Beautiful drive mind you but I am very glad nobody
was coming the other way because this was only wide enough for about one
car. After about 5 miles of this I suddenly came to a crossroad and it was
Harpers Ferry Rd. Like I said, no idea how I got off it in the first place.

Dear James,

Simple enough. When you leave the Antietam NBP and get back on
Maryland State Rte 65 (left out of the Antietam NBP parkig lot,
then left at the stop sign at SR 65), go down into Sharpsburg. At
the crossroads you will see a Mobil station on your far right and
a Lutheran church on your immediate left. The west-east street is
Main Street in town and becomes what once was the Boonsboro
Turnpike out of town. Take this road into Boonsboro, and at the
lgith in Boonsboro, make a right on Alt 40. This is the old
National Turnpike. Go east on Alt 40... in about ten minutes or
less you will be at Turner's Gap which is part of South Mountain.

Hope this helps.

Can anyone recommend a good book on Harpers Ferry? My recent visit there has
sparked my interest in the town's history. Chester Hearn has a book called
'Six Years of Hell' that looks like it might do the trick. Would that be a
good choice?

South Mountain is being developed as we speak! Most damage is
occurring at Turner's Gap where most of the land along D.H. Hill's
left flank has been parceled out for sale. Lots are already selling
along Dahlgren and Frosttown roads. The latter was recently repaved
to accommodate new home builders. Fox's Gap is in better shape, but
hopelessly entangled in a complex mosaic of public/private
ownership, unlikely to be unraveled. Whoever came up with the idea
of S. Mtn. State Battlefield was obviously hallucinating. It's a
latter-day tragedy. And preservation easements, in the long run,
won't be worth the paper they're written on, a band aid over a gash.

Tim,

I would say, "so sad," but that's not enough. I must say that it has never
been a perfect place to visit, but while researching my book I was glad to
be able to stand there and look down onto the valley floor and invision what
Hill must have seen when he first arrived.

The Reno and Garland monuments will remain won't they? At least give us
that.

Richard,

The Reno and Garland monuments art not going anywhere. The Garland monumment
is on Central Maryland Heritage League land and the state now owns the
Daniel Wise home site and the Appalachain Trail owns much of the right of
way through there. Much of the land at Fox's Gap are is own by one group or
the other or development rights have been bought up by the state. At
Turner's Gap as Tim Reese described the Frostown Road are is under
developement attack but the Alt 40 up the gap is protected.

Richard,

Your South Mountain question seems to have resurrected naïve
assumptions about cooperative, incongruent battlefield ownership,
its purported preservation, and the likelihood of achieving any
symbiosis toward accessible park status. Complex questions require
far more than simple answers, given the disparate groups involved
possessed of wholly divergent if not incompatible objectives. Pay no
attention to that man behind the curtain.

Instead may I direct your attention to http://cwbn.blogspot.com/ for
insightful investigation into the matter, postings for 3/5, 3/10,
3/12, 3/16. This is an intermittent thread which you will easily
pick up, a welcome breath of candor.

Also, if you seek honest definition of "South Mountain"
battlefields, and the political chicanery at work behind the scenes,
have a look at http://home.earthlink.net/~tjreesecg/id6.html. All is
not as it appears.

Having waded through all this, then see http://mlis.state.md.us/PDF-
Documents/2000rs/bills/hb/hb1183t.pdf for the official language of
what South Mountain "Fake" Battlefield is and is not. It's icing
without a cake which children naturally prefer.

Tim,

No one is being dishonest if you are referring to me. There is some truth to
what you say and I agree with you about the state, political and private
concerns of the South Mountain battlefields. His question about the Reno and
Garland monuments being moved, as far as I know, there are no plans afoot to
move either unless you know something I do not. Also, at this point in time
I am not associated with any group except Save Historic Antietam Foundation.
I left CMHL awhile back because of a plethora of back stabbing politics and
lip service in the name of battlefield preservation in the board of
directors' current make up. Further, I have not been terribly happy with
what the state has been up to(or not up to as the case may be)in the last
several years. I am not anyone's agent just as you are not. Just a concerned
civil war historian as you are.

Hi Kevin,

No one is referring to you; nor is anyone questioning your motives.
Let's be a little less sensitive. The dishonesty I invoke is
inherent and deliberate to the entire mountain "preservation"
process, infused into its every fiber from the get-go. When it all
began back in the `80s only George Brigham and I gave a damn. George
went off the deep end; I went back to the books where I remain. The
next publishing installment appears in June.

You and I both owe Richard a bit more candor. Of course the Reno and
Garland monuments will stay put! The former has been there over a
century; the latter is little more than a headstone sunk into CMHL
land 250 yards from the site. How contrived. Richard of course knew
they would remain, posing his question in saddened rhetoric. One can
scarcely blame him, one who can appreciate D.H. Hill's dilemma.

Those of us who have been on the "inside", who have experienced
covert agendas, and who have been disgusted at the ensuing
spectacle, owe it to every person interested in these sites to tell
it like it was, is, and mostly likely will remain. The maxim is "qui
tacet consentire": silence betokens consent.

I don't like to admit it, but the grim truth is that the South
Mountain battlefield (Turner's and Fox's) is a goner. Like those
I've learned to detest, I could continue to pretend something
meaningful is afoot. But it isn't. Only egos, careers, and bank
accounts matter these days.

You have my sincere sympathy for your past efforts, much good may
they do you. But now isn't the time to let the bastards get away
with it using our good will, tax dollars, and patience. It's time we
all called a spade a spade in both historical and preservation
contexts. Go through the URLs I sited to Richard; then tell me your
blood doesn't boil.

If we don't speak out, who will? Thanks for caring as always.

Hi Richard,

Fact is I haven't heard any buzz about a reenactment this year
whatsoever. You of course know about the troubles plaguing the
Sharpsburg Heritage Festival. Brian has posted nothing on AotW, and
I for one haven't heard diddly though everybody bends my ear sooner
or later. Maybe someone else?

Perhaps 140th observances in Virginia are logically stealing all the
fire this year. Just a guess.

Gang,

Mother's Day weekend is the anniversary of Spotsylvania, which is
the 140th year this year.

Antietam was two years ago for its 140th; however, there is a
smaller reenactment event near Burkittsville, Md.

Hi Richard,

Fact is I haven't heard any buzz about a reenactment this year
whatsoever. You of course know about the troubles plaguing the
Sharpsburg Heritage Festival. Brian has posted nothing on AotW,
and
I for one haven't heard diddly though everybody bends my ear
sooner
or later. Maybe someone else?

Perhaps 140th observances in Virginia are logically stealing all
the
fire this year. Just a guess.

Don't forget that at 12:30 on Sept 18th at the park, the dedication of the 90th
Pa monument will be held. More details will follow.

Thanks for the heads-up, Gerry. Figured something big had to be
going on in Virginia from Wilderness to Petersburg.

For anyone interested, the minor affair here at Burkittsville can be
accessed at http://www.burkittsville1862.com/. This is a repeat of
three years ago and may have run into a few snags depending upon who
you talk to.

None of the principals seem all that enthusiastic, the town has
yawned thus far, and the property owner is a bit vexed that earlier
proceeds didn't go to preservation. The state park service isn't
involved this time around. Scuttlebutt has it that the jury is out
on whether or not it will come off. Way too early to tell.

Paula,

You might want to ask Brian to post the 90 PA monument dedication on
the news/upcoming events page at AotW, including all details when
available.

Tim,

I would be interested in hearing what your views and/or vision for the best
way to preserve the South Mountain battlefields above and beyond what I have
looked at from the various sites you have been kind enough to include. If
you want to take this to private e-mail that is fine also. I am truly
interested in what you have to say and your philosophy of what it is going
to take. At the time I left CMHL they wanted to get away from the emphasis
the Civil War as the reason we formed CMHL and concentrate on other things
like Tea Shops and backing various sundry candidates in Middletown.
