Rangers at Antietam National Battlefield are investigating a hit and run
motor vehicle accident that occurred on the evening of September 19, 2003 that
destroyed a cannon carriage valued at $10,000. The incident occurred at the main
entrance to the park at the intersection of Maryland Route 65 and Dunker
Church Road. The involved vehicle may be maroon in color with driver or
passenger
side damage.

A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the person responsible for this crime. If you have any information
about
this incident, contact Ranger Todd Stanton or Chief Ranger Ed Wenschhof on
301-432-2243.

URL for photo of damage is below. If my AOL adds junk to it, just trim it
off.

Greetings listers,

I've been re-reading and posting lots of Antietam reports from the ORs
lately (http://aotw.org/exhibit.php?exhibit_id=OR_index), and have
been struck especially by a few. The text quoted below, written in
October 1862, really gets to me - mostly because it looks at first
glance to be typical 19th Century melodrama, but actually may be
indicative of much more ...

"In the beginning of the month of September the safety of the National
Capital was seriously endangered by the presence of a victorious
enemy, who soon after crossed into Maryland and then directly
threatened Washington and Baltimore, while they occupied the soil of a
loyal State and threatened an invasion of Pennsylvania."

"The army of the Union, inferior in numbers, wearied by long marches,
deficient in various supplies, worn out by numerous battles, the last
of which had not been successful, first covered by its movements the
important cities of Washington and Baltimore, then boldly attacked the
victorious enemy in their chosen strong position and drove them back,
with all their superiority of numbers, into the State of Virginia,
thus saving the loyal States from invasion and rudely dispelling the
rebel dreams of carrying the war into our country and subsisting upon
our resources."

"Thirteen guns and thirty-nine colors, more than 15,000 stand of
small-arms, and more than 6,000 prisoners were the trophies which
attest the success of our arms."

What do you think of it?

HISTORICAL FICTION WRITING CONTEST
---------- ------- ------- -------

A Contest Being Held By The "Fields Of Conflict"
Yahoo Group

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/FieldsOfConflict

---------------------------------------------------------

PRIZE...The winner will have his or her choice of either:

"Hardtack & Coffee--The Unwritten Story Of Army Life" by
John D. Billings (Origionally published in 1887), a view
of army life from the Union perspective.

"Company Aytch--Or, A Side Show Of The Big Show" by
Sam Watkins (Origionally published in 1882), a view of
army life from the Confederate perspective.

---------------------------------------------------------

OVERVIEW. . .

The contest is "Historical Fiction" about the American
Civil War and as such will have two components: a
"historical" research part and a purely "fictional" part.

Submissions for the contest will focus on one regiment
(either Union or Confederate), one battle in which that
regiment fought, and one person (a real individual who
actually lived during the Civil War, or a fictitious
individual made up by the author).

The entry can be written in any format. It can be a
first person narrative short story. It can be a series
of letters written home by this real or fictitious person.
It can be a diary written by this person. Or, it can be
in some other format--the only limitation is your own
imagination.

The object of the submission is to scatter throughout the
work information about the chosen regiment's involvement
in the selected battle. That's the "historical" portion
of the contest. The second objective is to develop the
character and personality of this real or fictitious
person who is conveying this information through either a
narrative, a series of letters home, in a diary, or in
whatever other form you might select. That's the
"fictional" part of the contest.

---------------------------------------------------------

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE ORIGIONAL WORK IN THEIR ENTIRETY WITH
NO PORTION TAKEN FROM ANY OTHER WRITINGS BY ANY OTHER
AUTHOR OR AUTHORS.

---------------------------------------------------------

JUDGING CRITERIA. . .

Submissions will be judged on just how well the author
succeeded in accomplishing both the "historical" and the
"fictional" objectives of the work. Questions like the
following will form the basis for selecting the winner:

1. Did the work give the reader a clear picture of what
the chosen regiment was doing before, during, and after
the selected battle?

2. Did the work supply interesting facts about this
regiment, it's higher ranking officers, the problems it
faced preparing for and taking part in the battle, the
men who made up the ranks, the equipment it had on hand,
the mindset of the men and their morale level, the
casualties they sustained, etc., etc., etc.? (The more
historically accurate information dispersed through the
work the more likely it will be that the piece will win.)

3. Did the work do a good job of developing the character
and personality of the real or fictitious person chosen
or created to convey the "historical" facts in the format
the author selected?

4. Does the reader come away from the work feeling as
though he or she "KNOWS" this person now and has insights
into this person's background and thinking.

5. Did the work accurately portray the life of a Civil
War soldier? If the chosen person is a physician, did
the work give the reader an accurate image of how doctors
functioned and the problems they faced. If the chosen
person is a cavalryman, did the work portray the problems
faced with their mounts. If the chosen person is an
officer, did the work give insights into how officers
delt with personel problems and devised tactics? If the
person is an enlisted man, did the work give insights
into what occupied the thoughts and attention of the
common soldier? Etc.

---------------------------------------------------------

RULES. . .

1. The contest begins 1 October 2003 and ends 1 March
2004.

2. Send an email to pes1248@... if you plan to
submit an entry. In the email please give the title of
your piece, the regiment and battle you plan to cover, the
name, rank, etc. of the person who will convey the
information, if the person is real or fictitious, and the
format you plan to use (story, letters, diary, etc). Also
include the email address at which you should be contact
if you win.

3. All submissions must be done in ASCII text with lines
no longer then 80 characters. This file, containing the
rules, is an example of the proper form. Do not make
submissions in Microsoft Word or any other word processing
software forms. I'll maintain a list of the intended
submissions in the FILES section so the rest of the
members can see who's entered and what they plan to do.

4. On 1 March 2004 all submissions must be uploaded as
a text file to the FILES/ARTICLES-MEMBER_WRITTEN folder of
the parent group. Do not upload any submissions to this
folder before 1 March 2004 or after 2 March 2004.

5. Any entries placed in the FILES section after 2 March
2004 will be removed as ineligible.

6. Members and moderators will have from 3 March 2004 to
31 March 2004 to read through the submissions and to cast
their vote for the best. Members and moderators are
asked to use the JUDGING CRITERIA above as a guide to
deciding which entry they feel adhered most closely to
the contest rules, which was the most interesting and the
most informative, and which they feel deserves the prize.

7. A poll will be started in the POLLS section of the
parent group on 3 March 2004 containing the titles of all
of the entries posted in the FILES section. Members and
moderators can then cast their vote for the best entry.
The poll will be of the "single choice" type, and also of
the type where member's Yahoo ID's are placed alongside
the vote (to avoid double voting and people voting for
their own entries). If you submit an entry you can't
vote in the poll. The poll will be scheduled to close
automatically on 31 March 2004.

8. Moderators and family members of moderators may not
submit entries.

9. The winner will be decided by the poll. A vote by a
moderator will be worth 2 points and a vote by a group
member will be worth 1 point. The entry with the highest
score will win.

10. The winning entry will be announced on or about the
first of April 2004 via a posted message to the group.
The winner will also be contacted via email at about the
same time (please make sure you enclose an email address
when you forward your entry letter mentioned in rule 2).
The winner will be asked to supply a mailing address to
which the book can be sent, and will also be asked which
book he or she wants.

11. In the event of a tie for first place, the decision
will be made by a coin toss (yes, you'll have to trust me
that the toss was fair). A prize not claimed by 15 April
2004 will go to the tied winner (if one exists) or to the
second place winner.

12. Authors agree to allow the group to make their works
public (to group members), and to allow the work to be
kept on permanent access in the FILES section for as long
as the group exists.

13. The contest is open ONLY to members of the Yahoo
group "Fields Of Conflict" or to members of their family.
To upload submissions you must be a member of the group
and members can upload submissions for family members who
which to participate.

Hi Keith,

Welcome to the group. I hope someone else will give you better
details, but you might start with a basic bio sketch and a link to his
Antietam after-action report online at:

These are some sites that give short Bios of general French. If you are
looking for more specifics about his role at Antietam I would read Landscape
Turned Red by Stephen Sears or I would use the internet to search for
specifice about his service with Sumner's Corp at that battle.

Thanks to all who replied about him. I am going to read the book and
websites mentioned below. Any info is what I am looking for. I know he
was called "old blinkey" and the few brief descriptions I have found
about him in other books have portrayed him as a "second class General"
not in the league of a Meade or Sherman. I have also perceived that he
was a hard disiplinarian, having strung up a soldier by his thumbs, for
calling him old blinkey.

Thanks again to all.

Dear Keith;

Apparently in the Old Army T J Jackson had been a
subordinate and had French brought up on charges for
apparent drunkenness. The men under him knew he was very
fond of the bottle and many of them did not like him for
that.

Also, I would suggest you read Jim Murfin's A Gleam of
Bayonets in addition to Landscape Turned Red.

Let me see if I can find anything about him in the Carman
narration accompanying Sid Meier's Antietam game.

Any suggested changes or corrections to this article? It is the
introduction to a new wargame scenario to be published in 2004.

Thanks!

"Park Service In Talks To Buy Disputed Lee Statue "

Sharpsburg, Md. (AP) - The National Park Service is negotiating to buy a
38-acre tract containing a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee for the
Antietam National Battlefield, the park's superintendent said Monday.

Critics have complained that the statue, dedicated by landowner William F.
Chaney in June, is historically inaccurate and mars the rural views that
battlefield preservationists treasure. Leaders of the Save Historic Antietam
Foundation say Lee never stood on that hill, although he might have passed
through the
area before the Sept. 17, 1862, battle.

The 24-foot bronze statue of Lee astride his horse, Traveller, would likely
remain in place for the time being if the park service were to acquire the
38-acre parcel, Superintendent John Howard said.

"The monument is there now, and with funding the way it is, it wouldn't be
hugely high on our priority list to move," Howard told The Associated Press.

Chaney's attorney, R. Bruce Poole, said a federal purchase of the property
would render moot the foundation's appeal in Washington County Circuit Court of
the local Board of Zoning Appeals' approval of the statue. The possibility of
a sale prompted postponement on Friday of a hearing on the issue.

Poole said Chaney, a distant relative of Lee, would retain ownership of 2.5
acres, including the Newcomer House Civil War Museum he installed inside a
farmhouse after outbidding the park service for the land in 1999.

Tom,

Thanks for the post.

If the NPS would purchase the acreage, would the ground that Mr. Chaney
retained include the Newcomer barn across the street? By the way do you
know the latest on the effort to stabilize the barn?

On 12-21-03 there was another article posted in the Philly Inquirer (copied
from Baltimore Sun) entitled:
"Battle brews over Lee statue at Antietam site". It is too long to post the
text here.

URL is: http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/news/nation/7538919.htm

Hopefully the URL works. AOL tends to create some problems with them.

Thanks Brian! I knew those photos were somewhere on line, but I just couldn't
find them for some reason. Last fall when we discussed the damage here, I tried
to print out those photos, but was having problems with my printer.

Thanks,

Dear Paula,

Greetings to all!

I'm hoping the collective wisom here can help me find some
information on this dear woman.

Mrs. Margaret Shackleford was a widow with 2 children living in
Sharpsburg at the time of the battle. Unfortunately, her little
house on Antietam Street did not survive the battle. It was
destroyed by artillery during the battle. One source says the day
before, on the 16th. Luckily, she was able to rebuild a house on the
same site and lived there until her death in 1889. I currently reside
in that house and would like very much to hear from anyone else who
has an additional incident on this woman or the incident in which her
house went bomb! (so to speak).

I have seen several references to the event (too afraid to cry,
Schaff's History of Western MD, newspaper, etc.)but nothing with more
detail. A trip to the National Archives for a possible claim for
damages resulted in an empty folder! So, I am somewhat at a loss on
where to turn next.

Has anyone seen or heard any additional news on this incident?

Thank you!

Mark.
I have wondered about property being destroyed , did the
govenment pay for these losses or did each person have to rebuild on
their own? I am sure each case was treated differently and subject
to political connections or loyalties. Was Mrs Shackleford loyal to
the Union or Confederacy?

Thanks
Jeff

My understanding was that if damaged was not the result of military
action they were paid. My reference is the Bliss Farm at
Gettysburg, the ruleing was that the distruction was part of the
battle and they got nothing.

Unfortunately, I do not know what her sentiments were. Sharpsburg was
a deeply divided city, with followers of each side. I wish I could
find out more about her, but have not been able to locate any more
information.

Mary,

I am very sorry I misread your name and also thanks to James for
the info. One thing I would bet no matter what your loyalties were,
if you lost property it would infuriate you and strengthen your
resolve to end the war.
