Subject: John Brown's Fort To Be Added to Park

In this 1896 photo, women stand in front of John Brown's fort, which stood
on Murphy Farm until 1906. (Historic Photo Collection, Harpers Ferry NHP)
Instead of becoming a 188-unit housing development, a 99-acre farm that
was the site of an 1862 Civil War battle will soon become part of Harpers
Ferry National Historical Park in Harpers Ferry, W. Va.

The Trust for Public Land, a conservation group, announced yesterday that
it will buy the Murphy Farm and transfer it to the National Park Service,
which will reimburse the Trust.

The Murphy family says it is "overjoyed" that the property, which has been
a working farm since 1869, will be added to the adjacent 2,300-acre
national park. "This is a dream that every generation of the Murphy family
has shared," the family said in a statement.

From 1895-1910, abolitionist John Brown's fort stood on the Murphy Farm.
In 1906, W.E.B. DuBois and other African-American leaders made a barefoot
pilgrimage to the fort, a meeting that resulted in the formation of the
NAACP.

If anyone is interested, this weekend I will be presenting two public
miniature wargames based upon the fighting at South Mountain. These
games are FREE to the viewing public, and will be a part of the very
large Fall-In 2002 convention of wargamers at the Lancaster Host
Resort on route 30 in Lancaster PA.

Game #1 will be Friday night at 6PM. It will recreate Cox's attack on
Fox's Gap led by Rutherford B. Hayes and the 23rd OVI and others.
This is a game orginally presented at the Hayes museum in Fremont OH
in early October. The game will be in 15mm scale using Johnny RebIII
as the rules set.

Game #2 will be Saturday afternoon at 2PM. This will be a follow-up
game with the afternoon and evening action at Fox's Gap as Reno led
forward the rest of IX Corps while parts of 5 Rebel brigades tried to
hold the gap.

Both games are excerpted from the manuscript for my upcoming
wargaming book, "Undying Courage: The Maryland Campaign in
Miniature." This work is the third in a series of full-color
wargaming booklets. Volume 1 of the series, "Enduring Valor:
Gettysburg in Miniature" is now in print and for sale at Gettysburg
shops including Greystone's and others. Volume 2 is due out in
January.

If anyone is interested in learning a little more about miniature
wargaming, feel free to stop by the Lancaster Host and watch the
South Mountain games, and introduce yourself as a member of the
TalkAntietam board.

And to those of you from this group who has so very graciously
offered advice, constructive criticism of the draft scenarios, and
suggestions, THANK YOU very much!

regards!

Jason,

Sorry I missed your presentation on Iverson at the CWRT meeting in
Gettysburg last week. I was tied up with other activities.

I did do a Gettysburg game a couple weeks ago at the Winds of Valor /
MilitaryHistoryOnline.com fall muster.

I'll post some pictures of this weekend's South Mountain games for
folks to get an idea of what the gaming layout looks like.

Gerry,

I have all 16 miniature wargaming scenarios currently in manuscript
format prior to submitting them to my publisher. If you's like to
take a look, please send me an e-mail off-line. Several folks from
this YahooGroup have been kind enough to help review the scenarios
and offer constructive commentary. Feel free to join in!

I have read that the Stonewall Regiment lost 141 men at South
Mountain. Does anyone know how many men they carried into that fight
(or into Antietam as I can then calculate how many they had a South
Mountain). I've heard anywhere from 500-982 in terms of the numbe rat
South Mountain.

What contemporary sources are out there, and what do they say?

Scott, I'm not sure if this is what you're after but Jeffry Wert writes
in his "A Brotherhood of Valor: The Common Soldiers of the Stonewall
Braigade, C.S.A, And the Iron Brigade, U.S.A., "A recent estimate has
calculated the average Confederate regimental strength at 166 and
comparative Union numbers at 346. In the Stonewall Brigade, the figures were
starkly worse. jackson had detached the Second Virginia and assigned it to
provost duty in Martinsburg, Virginia, reducing the brigades regiments to
four. Colonel Andrew Grigsby commanded the Virginians with a lieutenant
colonel, a major, and two captains serving as regimental commanders. The
brigade's reported strength at Sharpsburg was 250 officers and men, an
average of slightly more than sixty per regiment.

The Stonewall REGIMENT and the Stonewall BRIGADE were two different entaties.
One was Union from Michigan and the other was Rebel from Virginia.
The Stonewall brigade was at Harpers Ferry during the battle for South
Mountain.

Easy mistake to make. J. Amico also got confused. The plaque near the Reno
Monument tells the story of the Stonewall Regiment. Perhaps someone from
Michigan could come up with the numbers. I've only been there a few times and
can not recall what is written on the plaque.

Scott,

Bill Christen presented a great talk on the 17th MICH at the recent Antietam
re-enactment.

From his notes, here is info on Christ's Brigade for afternoon action at
Wise's farm in Fox's Gap - 14 September 1862:

Colonel Benjamin C. Christ - First Brigade (162 casualties)
Captain Andrew P. Caraher - 28th Massachusetts (7 wounded)
Lieutenant Colonel Frank Graves - 8th Michigan 200 men (8 wounded)
Colonel William H. Withington - 17th Michigan, 750 men (26 killed, 106
wounded)
Lieutenant Colonel David Morrison - 79th New York (12 wounded)
Major Edward Overton - 50th Pennsylvania (3 wounded)

I have already sent Scott a copy of my presentation from the past September
through Harry Smeltzer. In it he can find my estimation is 720-750 as the
strength before S. Mountain and 500 after Antietam.

Thanks folks! I needed the information on the 17th MI for a wargaming
scenario that I have written for Fox's Gap for inclusion in "Undying
Courage: Antietam in Miniature."

I'm still working on determining the armament of Stuart's cavalry
regiment by regiment. I've found some sources, but there are still
gaps. Does anyone have additional sources on each regiment and their
primary weapon (pistols, sabers, shotguns, breechloading carbines,
muzzle loading carbines, etc.)?

Group,

If anyone has been to the Antietam website lately, there is a
wonderful press release posted therein. Parts of the historic
Piper Orchard were to be begun being replanted in October of this
year.

I think, that, once the entire orchard is replanted it will
provide a much more accurate view of the terrain features behind
the Sunken Road. Of course, it would be difficult to replant the
cornfield area but this is a large step towards a more Civil War
era appearance.

Any comments?

I've read war correspondent Geo. W. Smalley's article, "A Witness to Mutiny at
Antietam," in which he alleges an attempt by Lt. James Wilson of McClellan's
staff to sound-out the wounded Hooker (via Smalley) on replacing Mac as
commander of the AoP while the battle was in progress. Smalley wrote his
article in 1894 and did not name Wilson in it. Sears mentions the episode in
Landscape Turned Red. The staff officer, of course, was "boy wonder" James
Harrison Wilson, who ended the war a storied cavalry leader and maj. gen. I am
curious if anyone besides Smalley mentioned or alluded to this incident.

Gerry,

This view is looking north from the Lamb's Knoll region. In the
foreground is the country lane that ran by the J. H. Beachley house
(first house from the bottom). To the right is Old Sharpsburg Road
(Hoffman and Martz houses). Towards the center is Fox's Gap and a
structure to represent the Wise cabin. To the left is the road
heading down towards Pleasant Valley (Lampert and Hutzel homesteads).
To the north (top of the photo) runs the old mountain road towards
Turner's Gap.

At the extreme NE corner of the photo is the National Pike near the
D. Beachley farm. The stone walls in this segment are defending by
two regiments of Colquitt's Brigade.

Everything is in 15mm scale. I use Johnny RebIII as the rules. Each
inch of miniature terrain equals 50 yards of ground scale, each tiny
wargaming pewter figure equals 30 armed combatants, and each game
turn is 20 minutes of ground time.

For more pictures of South Mountain gaming, please see my web site at
http://www.geocities.com/scottmingus/index. Also, please sign my
guestbook if you have time.

regards!

In many OOBs that I have seen, the tactical commander of this
regiment is not names. Has anyone ever seen documentation of who
commanded this regiment at Sharpsburg and South Mountain?
