Brian: Couldn't even get off the ground here yesterday AM, conditions near
zero-zero. Cleaned her up some, once the fog lifted flew a while just enjoying
the Tailwind, but conditions were still very hazy.
2500 rpm (don't have a manifold pressure gauge) is getting me around 175-178 mph
at 2500 ft, have checked this twice w/ 4 way GPS. Don't think I'm hardly there
on
the prop yet, and I've got some drag reduction to do.

Brian, I am now working on the rotary engine installation. I have
placed the radiator (26lbs wet) at station "D" (78" on new plans).
I have moved the engine forward several inches (of the most rearward
possible position). To balance, I can locate the battery behind
the seats or in the engine compartment--I can choose between a wood
or metal prop. I can carry more fuel in the header tank and less in
the wings. At this phase, it is a guessing game. If I could weigh
the fuselage and get a rough estimate of the c.g. it would help a
lot. --Jerry

Rick, I started out yesterday at 10:00 and the haze
was so bad I turned around after about 5 miles. I
spent the day cleaning and tweaking stuff. I removed
the cowling and cut off the flang on the bottom
outlet. Made small fairings for the stub strut, and
taped up the gaps between the fuslage and horizontal
stab. I recently installed strut cuffs. At 3000' and
2500/22" average ground speed GPS 2 way was 163 MPH. I
still have lots to do to cleanup the airframe but did
see an increase over previous flights. Also cleaned
some paint out of the pitot and static ports, now the
Airspeed is within 5mph of the GPS instead of 15.

Rick, how did the prop turn out, did it help? Whats takeoff and top
speed rpm? Only have 10 hours on 168X but have quite a few TO and
landings. Been making several small adjustments. The prop needs a
little tuning as it turns only 2200 on T.O. and 2600 @ 2500ft. Climb
is well over 2000 fpm. Haven't tried performance at 8 and 10000 ft
yet. Top speed is around 210-212mph but hopefully pick up with srut
fairings and 150 more rpm. Easy cruise at 2500 ft is 2300rpm at22-22

I am having the drive made by a professional machine shop. Right now
the output shaft has been splined and threaded and hardened. Next it
will be ground. The harmonics have been largely taken care of by
better design that has evolved over the years. Still, when you are
building your own, you don't know for sure until you spin a
prop.--Jerry

You guys gotta read this!! Talk about your massive dead stick landing!
No power for 18 minutes in an Airbus, and landed in the Azores, I'm no
geography wiz but isn't that in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere?
The guy that had hold of the pointy end of this aircraft deserves large
thanks.

LAJES, Azores Islands (AP) Portuguese investigators sought Saturday to piece together the circumstances that forced a Canadian airliner with 306 people aboard to make an emergency landing without engine power.
More than 50 passengers were injured Friday when the Air Transat plane hit the runway and screeched to a halt after gliding without engines for 18 minutes.
Aviation officials speculated the Airbus A330 may have developed a fuel leak 65 miles off the Portuguese island. Investigators from the Portuguese Aviation Institute arrived Saturday at the Azores' island airport.
Passengers screamed when the plane's tires burst into flames as fuel spilled onto the runway, witnesses and officials said.
``People panicked and screamed. We lost altitude quickly and the plane depressurized and jerked about,'' passenger Joao Gaspar said. ``It was a miracle we survived.''
The passengers donned life vests as the plane rapidly descended and the pilot struggled to control it. But he managed to land at the Lajes airport on Terciera Island, one of the nine islands in the Azores chain, about 900 miles from Portugal.
Nine people were taken to the hospital after the evacuation and the rest were treated by paramedics at the airport.
``Only the pilot's skill prevented a tragedy,'' Alfredo Cruz, a commander at Lajes Field, a U.S. Air Force base on the island, told the Portuguese news agency Lusa.
``The flight attendants were hysterical. One of them was swearing, and the one making the announcement that we had to make an emergency landing sounded very scared,'' said passenger Daniel Rodrigues, 24, of Toronto. ``Once people heard her voice, all the old people started praying.''
The plane's wheels burst into flame and fuel spilled onto the runway when it touched down, vice president of Portugal's civil protection agency in the Azores Ricardo Barros said. Frightened passengers left the plane by the emergency chutes.
The jet was en route from Toronto to Lisbon with 293 passengers, mostly Portuguese living in Canada, and 13 crew members aboard. Michel Lemay, a spokesman for the Montreal-based charter airline, said both engines were shut down when it landed.
But he said it was ``too early to say if it's an engine problem or a fuel problem or another problem.''
Canada's civil aviation authority suspended Air Transat's authority to operate the twin-engine aircraft over an extended range until it is ``satisfied that no safety deficiencies exist,'' spokesman Art LaFlamme said.
The incident also prompted Transport Canada to send a team of investigators to the Azores and step up monitoring Air Transat's operations to ensure compliance with safety requirements.
It was the second recent problem with an Air Transat plane. On Aug. 18, the 338 people aboard a Lockheed L-1011 jumbo jet were evacuated after smoke poured the cabin as it moved into takeoff position at Orlando International Airport. The pilot braked hard and ordered everyone to leave the plane on the emergency slides. Two people suffered minor injuries.
Air Transat specializes in charter flights from several Canadian and European cities to vacation destinations.

Are you making your own redrive system or are you buying a commercial unit?
I hear that there are harmonic considerations in designing redrive
system--i.e. they can shake themselves apart under some conditions.

Well lets see how this site works. I am attaching two Tailwind photo's
Jim's new Tailwind Image05 (54.4KB)
Weaver's Tailwind Rocket&Tailwind (48.6KB)
Total of 93KB.

Thanks Jerry. I hope it continues to work well, and be mostly maintenance
free.

Today we are very pleased to post a wonderful collection of photos
detailing the construction of Rick Croslin's beautiful Tailwind.
There are 114 photos in all. Taking all these photos, scanning them,
and sending them to us was a large undertaking. But Rick tackled it
and got the job done. That is the way he is. To view, go to
j-winddesigns.com and click on Construction photos and scroll to
find them. Jerry
I like this much better than the tons of emails I was getting with
they way Jerry doing it. I signed up for the daily digest. Does
anyone know if the digest will automatically send pictures or do you
have to do a seperate download?
