Frank: Just another quick note to say that I took a look at your photo of the
whole machine, and it is delirious. It makes me laugh just to look at the photo.
I'm sure it's even more magnificent in real life. At first, I thought the body
of the typewriter moved back and forth on the carriage rails. I have an Oliver 5
with a 14-inch carriage, but your machine simply puts that to shame. Definitely
find an escapement and backspace mechanism to make your monster work!
Hi all, Today, I bought a British Oliver No 15, sn CS15608 (very wide carriage). The problem is that the draw cord is broken. According to secrets of the...
Hi Frank, Ordinarily you press the two keys between the typebar 'mounds' and push in the little black button just under the left hand side platen/roller know...

Hi Nick, Thanks for the tip, I managed to get the carriage off. It turned out to be jammed, like you described. Now I need to replace the broken draw cord. The...
Congrats on getting the carriage off. I don't know if the mechanism is the same, but I have had good results using shoelaces as replacement carriage bands on...
Frank, If you buy the picture hanging kit from Lowes, it contains a perfect small steel cable that can work perfectly as a draw cord. Next you can adapt one...
Marty,Ā Thanks for the tip! I already told you on youtube, but anyway: great videos!! Planning more sequals? ... De: martinaricejr <martinaricejr@...> ...
Thanks! I tied the cord directly to the carriage and it seems to work. :)However, sometimes, while typing, the carriage suddenly shoots to the left. Any clue...
The tabs on the 9s I've worked on have to be set with little spring-loaded sliders that sit on the jagged-edged rail on the bottom-front of the carriage....
thanks for your help, squattercity. Now I know why the carriage is beyond control: some of the teeth of the gear under the right margin release button have...
Frank-- Sounds like an ugly escapement issue. Perhaps the best solution would be to get hold of a cheap rustbucket machine and swap escapements. Olivers come...
Thanks Rob, I“ll search for a Oliver parts machine, although there are not that many here in Holland and shipping a rustbucket doesn“t make sense as shipment...
Frank: Didn't see this query till now. I'm guessing that these super-wide-load typewriters were used to type on ledger paper. Perhaps the ribbon was set high...
Hi, the little forked tongue is very close to the platen. I guess that means that the ribbon support has been bend? I am glad you liked the Oliver; I am also...
Sorry for not writing in english, but I hope you like the pictures: http://schrijfmachine.blogspot.com/2011/03/british-oliver-no-15.html ... De: squattercity...
Brilliant photos, Frank. Thanks for the link. Given how great your machine is, I imagine the 40-inch platen must be sheer insanity. Rob P.S. I think you're...
Uh oh, Frank, from your photo, it appears the backspace support is fractured off. It typically rises from that piece of metal that's rusty and uneven in your...

Hi Rob, sooner than expected, I managed to get a rusty but working Oliver 9 (sn 606984) that serves as a parts machine. In previous mail (see below) you spoke...
Hi Frank, Congrats on your purchase. Hope it didn't cost too much. Seems sad to be cannibalizing a working No. 9. But, of course, if it wasn't fully...
Hi Rob, I finally managed to get out the escapement of the parts machine. I broke various screws and 2 screwdrivers. Worse, I still have no clue how I can get...
Never give up, Frank. Sorry about the screws and screwdrivers. I should have mentioned that penetrating oil--to break the accumulated rust and dust--and some...
Thanks for motivating. I“ll let is rest some days and will give it another try next weekend. In the meantime I“ll look for some better screwdrivers. I...
Keep the faith, Frank. Two things: 1. screwdrivers with thin heads designed for working on guns seem ideal. Here in the gun-crazy U.S., they're easy to find at...
