Hi Gulls,

I'll be helping out next year as the club's handlaunch coordinator and
resurrecting our monthly DLG contests. We are planning on making these
AMA-sanctioned contests with a $5 (or so) entry fee. We anticipate
attracting the local TPG pilots as well as a good number of Los
Angeles- and Orange County-based pilots.

I'd like to pass the proposed dates by this list before we publish to
the RC Groups community and send in the AMA forms. Please take a look
at the dates, times, and let me know your thoughts on our basic plans.
A few things to note:

- Contests will be held at the Encinitas field.
- Contests will be held in the afternoons. We'd like to expose pilots
to afternoon conditions when many people pack up their toys and head
home. This should make for excellent contest conditions.
- Contests will alternate between Saturdays and Sundays. We feel this
will help expand our potential pool of pilots as many can't make one
of the days due to standing commitments.
- Contests will be scheduled for the first Saturday or Sunday of the
month except for Easter weekend and Independence Day. There should be
no conflict with the TD contests.
- One of the contests will be removed depending on when the IHLGF is scheduled.

Sun, January 3, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, February 6, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun, March 7, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, April 10, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun, May 2, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, June 5, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun, July 11, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, Sun, August 7, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun, September 5, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, October 2, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sun, November 7, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM
Sat, December 4, 2010 from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Cheers,
Brad

Thanks, Moose. Maybe you can make it down for one or two... :)

Keith pointed out that Visalia Fall Fest is always the first weekend in
October, so I have pushed that month's contest out by a week. The updated
dates are. below. Please take a look and provide your feedback before this
becomes "official."

Brad

So, new handlaunch should just show up, right? This sounds like fun,
but I'm going to have a lot to learn...

Absolutely, Chuck. You'll find that almost all handlaunch contests are very
welcoming to beginners. One of the best parts is that you're always paired
with a timer, and most of the "pros" are more than happy to time for the new
guys. You'll find yourself learning a ton quickly and really sharpening your
thermaling and air-reading skills. It's always a great time.

Cheers,
Brad

My first sailplane contest ever ever ever was a TPG handlaunch contest
in early 2000. I still have the results e-mail that Carl Anderson
(Paul's dad) sent out afterwards, mentioning me.

This club has always been helpful to beginners.

Tom

PS for the history buffs, Arthur won that four-round contest with four
1,000s.

Chuck,

I went to one hand launch contest and had a ball. This is a great bunch of
flyers and a great club. Go for it and soar!

I need a few more responses for our fix up day (morning) for Saturday, otherwise
a few folks will be doing the work of the many.

I want to thank Mark Wood for putting a good effort in last Saturday. Also
Robin Marien the flight director and Jim Wright another paraglider pilot put in
a good effort as well. Robin loaned us some tools as did Mark. Thanks guys

We need a couple of shovels and a pic for breaking up dirt clods. If anyone can
bring those let me know.

See you at ten AM or soon thereafter,

Adam

I'm planning to be there for a few hours if I can rearrange the family
schedule slightly. I can bring some shovels and such. Would we need
a wheelbarrow?

Hey Guys thanks for the response.

We'll start at 10:00 and go until we finish probably 1:00 or so. I'll have
refreshments and some hand tools. Robin will loan us his wheelbarrow. A couple
of shovels would be helpful. If you can stay we'll have a funfly afterward.

see you then,

Adam

Not likely, I'm afraid....We ARE coming for Thanksgiving, but I won't have time
for any flying. I'm still trying to find the good sites here, at least the ones
the don't require a 4x4 to get to....Any of you guys that want to come up here
are welcome at my house, and I'm sure the PASS guys will love to show you
around.

Happy Landings,

Big thanks to the intrepid souls who showed up out at Torrey to help out with
laying down some new carpet.

They are:

Steve Conner
Kiyoshi Murakami
Chuck Norris

Its folks like you that keep our club working and thriving.

We successfully covered the front half of the mound/setup area to prevent any
future erosion of this historic location. Kiyoshi installed a new mailbox for
the rating forms.

One final thing is to locate cheap or donated commercial grade carpet to expand
the landing area. No more indoor carpet needed up there. If you have a lead on
this let me know.

Come on out and fly!

Thanks again, Adam Smith, Slope Coordinator

PS historical note: Our setup area was the location of gun placement during
world war II. We found some old plumbing at the edge of the mound.

Adam,
FYI - the Torrey mound was actually a revetment for a Howitzer that was
stationed up there during WWII as part of Camp Callan. That's the reason why the
mound actually has an "L" shape. (well, at least it did when I was a kid and
there was much less carpet).

Most of you are probably already familiar with this, but I found this blog
interesting. It talks about the techniques used to make composite sailplane
components. Lots if info and pictures.

What a great link. That would be so cool to do.

I've been thinking lately that it would be awesome to have a "Composites Camp"
for adults. I imagine a several-day program that costs enough to pay for the
materials and instruction, where you go home at the end of the week with a new
sailplane, plus a lot of new skills to keep building composite planes in your
garage.

I would probably prefer bagged foam-core technology over molds, just because the
cost of CNC-cut molds can be prohibitively expensive for most builders. But the
idea of having expert instruction, plus coming home with a new plane that you
built yourself is very appealing.

Chuck, just fly to Germany, it exists. But it is expensive. Martin
Webershock sells this kind of service.

Well Chuck, I admit when I read your post I thought "dream on" because who
would offer something like that?! Martin is the best of the best so if
you're gonna go to composite summer (winter?) camp, his would yield you the
very best airplane and building skills.

Go git 'em!

Steve

Talk to Bryan at Commercial Furnishings, across the street from The Smog Station
(where I worked). Ron at Smog Station can give you more info. Bryan is the guy
that I had talked to before and is also a glider guy. Tell him I sent you.

Happy Landings,
