I got a Roadmate 2000 GPS unit today as an early Christmas present. It says it
is WAAS. However, I cannot find any cables for it to hook into the 700. Am I
blind or does somebody know where I might find one?

Thanks,
Gary

I, after reading sooooo many of these entries, decided going with the GPS 18x
PC. Just save a little more money and do it the right way. It has the DB-9 pin
serial connector with 12-volt cigarette lighter adapter; and can output data in
NMEA 0183 format (industry standard) or proprietary Garmin format. I am glad I
did because using other people's ideas with the DB-9 connectors, mine works very
well.

I've got my 700 set for sending data every 3 minutes, but the radio sends out
sporadically (when it wants to).

You can find me at kf4orw-9 in the Tampa Bay area. Track it with http://aprs. fi
.

The Radio Shack Digitraveler was closed out at $29.95 and sells for
around that on Ebay

Works fine with my D700A.

I bought the Garmin GPS 18x PC unit from GPSCITY
(i looked it up, they still sell it, its here)

http://www.gpscity.com/garmin-gps-18x-pc-high-sensitivity.html

I leave it on all the time, which means it has a "fix" instantly when i
turn on the car most times (I park in a garage, occasionlly it cant get
a gps signal in the garage but most of the time it *can* which i find
pretty amazing, since my house is above the garage...)

Anyway, the only downside i've discovered is *occasionally* the TMD700
stops "hearing" the GPS. (The GPS light stops flashing on the display).
So i just reset the gps, and reset the TMD700 by selecting "none" for
GPS unit and then goign back to NMEA. Seeems to happen once every
month or two.

Works great, not expensive and it just works. I also own an AVMAP but i
dont normally use it int he car.

I have used a Garmin model V GPS with my D700 for a couple of years with
no problems. I bought my Model V on Amazon.com. Custom interface cable
assemblies are also available. Do a google search.

if you just want the nmea data and dont care about having a screen, i
use this one

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=27594&pvID=14555

it's a garmin gps18 - there's 3 versions,

GPS 18x PC — has DB-9 pin serial connector with 12-volt cigarette
lighter adapter; can output data in NMEA 0183 format (industry standard)
or proprietary Garmin format.

GPS 18x USB — has A-style USB connector, compatible with USB 2.0 and 1.1
full-speed hosts; can output data in Garmin proprietary format only.

GPS 18x LVC — has bare wire for connection to a variety of applications;
can output data in NMEA 0183 format (industry standard) or proprietary
Garmin format; provides a pulse-per-second logic-level output with a
rising edge aligned to within 1 microsecond of UTC time.

I bought the LVC version that just has "bare ends" on. i run power from
my usb port on my laptop (also works with those 12 volt ciggie -> usb
droppers) and split the output between my d700 and laptop.

they range from 80 bux for the lvc to 85 for th usb, but imho it's worth
it. even works attached to the INSIDE roof of the work truck (they wont
let me drill holes in the roof and install it properly, they like the
radio coax and other stuff going through the door seal. go figure)

I don't know if you're looking for a unit with an LCD display or not,
but on my D700, I found a Trimble Crosscheck GPS unit, dirt cheap on
Ebay, about three years ago. It's just a very generic-looking silver
box, and was originally sold for commercial fleet management (and sold
new for about $1200, but now can be found for under $50). I have it
mounted in the spare tire well of my SUV, and all wiring is totally
concealed. It does have two serial outputs on it, so I have one
connected to the D700 full-time, and I built a second serial cable for
the other output, which I connect my laptop to when I need it (using
Street Atlas). Most of the time, however, I just use it to feed data to
the D700, so I don't have any extra dashboard clutter when I don't need it.

I haven't looked at it in a while, but I think the antenna connection is
SMA.

They still show up on Ebay from time to time. If this sounds like what
you're looking for, check it out. If you find the Trimble Placer, that's
OK too. It still has two serial outputs, but it's slightly newer, and
supports WAAS.

1 GPS-III and I constructed a custom cable using 3 DB-9 cables, the
GPS cable for the TMD-700 and the Garmin cable. I just connected the
data out and grounds together from all 5 cables.

I have an old Garmin GPS-III that I bought about 10 years ago. I have
seen them on eBay for less than $50 these days.

I have it mounted in the rear cargo area of my SUV next to the radio
and use a cheap external GPS antenna I got at Fryes for $30 and a
cable harness that supplies 12VDC to the GPS. I leave it on all the
time, this eliminates having to turn it on and wait for satellite
acquisition but it doesn't draw down the battery unless I leave it for
a few weeks.

The Garmins usually use a BNC antenna connector but SMA-BNC adaptors
can be found easily.

I also have the same GPS supplying data to 3 Uniden scanners that use
GPS to switch systems on and off, works great for all 4 radios!

Simple:

If you don't have tone selected, press the "TONE" soft key and cycle through
no tone, "T", "CT" . to get what you want. Typically we use "CT" in this
area (tone for both xmit and receive.) Never used "DCS".

Then select the "F" soft key and then the "T.SEL" soft key to get to the
selection screen. Rotate the left hand (large) knob to select the tone you
want and press the "ok" soft key

as far as aprs goes, uiview imho is the best around

for "normal" tnc functions, hyperterminal will work but my favorite is
either winpack or terater. the latter being a standard terminal
emulation program.

I've been operating my TMD 700a for some time at a location that's not
convenient to a PC. Now that's changed and I want to connect it to the
computer and a terminal program.

Is there a preferred choice of terminal programs available for operating
APRS and other functions?

Is there one that will process the APRS data?

Using the internal APRS program I see a lot of messages that are too
long to display on the 700a's screen. I'd like to see the whole
message, and transmit similar messages.

It sets the hour just fine on a d700, but a gps gives gmt which doesnt change
for dst. You still need to change the offset.

Thanks

I was led to believe by a D710 owner last spring it was more
complicated, but it may have just been level of a familiarity with the
radio.

"Using a GPS you can press POS and select "symbol of a clock"SET"

Does that set the hours as well? On the D700 it only synchs minutes and
seconds with the GPS.

This only applies if you are using a local time zone - if you use UTC time
nothing changes.

Oh the joy of a single universal time zone.

For US members of the list who are affected, once you're done dealing
ghouls and goblins tonight, don't forget to reset your clocks,
especially your radio clocks.

I'm sending this out as in the past I've run for days without
remembering to change the radio as well as the other clocks. Finally
caught on when I saw that all of my positions were "old" positions on
the home station.

In addition to resetting your GPS for the time feed to your radio, you
also need to adjust the time zone on your radio.

For the TM-D700: Menu, (1)Radio, (6)TNC, (5) Time Zone. add one hour to
the current setting (example, ET: From -4:00 to -5:00).

Don't forget to do it for each of your saved PMs.

I understand it's a little more involved for the D710, and I have no
idea on the Yaesu handheld. YMMV.

I have the chance to pick up a D700 fairly cheap but have found that to turn it
back on you have to unplug it from the power supply. Also have noticed that if
I try to change the PM or turn on the TNC it is freezing up and turning off but
the microphone light stays on. I have tried resetting it but it did the same
thing. It is in the 61 series of serial numbers. I'm not sure if anyone else
has had this problem and what the repair was or if you sent it in and could give
me a rough estimate of what it cost to fix.

Thanks in advance.
Travis
