Update to the post below. I tried the Ni-Zn batteries in the BT-11h batttery holder in the
D7. WORKS GREAT!!!!!
I get full power out of them and they are 2500mah too as opposed to the lower power with the 1.2V Nimh cells. The Ni-Zn are rated at 1.6V. This will make it the highest capacity full power pack one can use with the D7.
Only issue with these cells is I wouldn't use them on the back of the H/T if running concurrently with the lighter plug power supply. I use the Nimh cells when I have the
radio plugged in. Plus you should only use the charger that comes with the Ni-Zn cells
and DO NOT use any other kind of charger UNLESS it states clearly it can be used for
Ni-Zn cells. I did bypass the protection diode in the BT-11H pack but even if I didn't, I still
wouldn't try using the radio plugged into a power supply with the Ni-Zn cells in the pack.
It would be dynamite if some of the old battery holders/cables are compatible when the new D7 comes out. Somehow I don't think that is going to happen. More then likely they will engineer so the old stuff can't be used with the new.

Just wanted to suggest the availability of the Ni-Zn batteries. Could be a likely candidate to use in a 6 cell BT-11h battery holder for the D7. Nominal V is 1.6V so it would make it a 2500mah 9.6V pack. The no load voltage after charging is 1.8V.
I have them but haven't tried them yet in my D7 as I don't want to take the remote chance that they will dork the thing. I've bypassed the diode in the BT-11h holder and I would suggest if one is going to run the D7 with external power like the cig lighter converter, that you use standard NiMh cells as the Ni-Zn use a special charger. Just use the Ni-Zn for portable use and charge with the 5 hour charger. There is a 1h and 5h charger available and I'd go with the 5h as the 1h only gets to 80%
capacity.

I see the previous owner of this group is gone and the email is bad for him.
We need a new moderator for the group to kick the spam out.
I already moderate a Bearcat scanner group (taken over for same reason) and

If anyone else is interested in running this group post an email to the

Please HELP
I want to get my portable packet station up using my ancient Radio Shack Tandy
TRS-80/Model 100 Laptop. I used it 20 yrs ago with a PacCom TNC and a 2meter
HT. The model 100 uses 4 AA cells and is perfect for a low-tech packet staion to
have in case of emergeny/disaster rather than a battery eating modern laptop.
I need help figuring out the RS232 coonection on the back of the model 100 to
the Th-D7A so they can talk.
Any help appreciated.

There is a replacement being planned, of course, which is to be expected
eventually. It's competitive and manufacturers can't stand still.
Typically one of the first signs that it is coming near to release in the US
is when the manufacturer applies to the FCC for compliance approval
(required before sale in the US). There are currently no such applications
to be found on the FCC website for a Kenwood HT. Speculation/rumor that
I've heard includes: better TNC, built-in GPS, D-Star option, color display,
Bluetooth, water-resistant, quad-band, available in US before end of 2009.
That's quite a wish-list, and my bet is that it's highly speculative rumor
with little to no basis. No announcements, no explicit evidence of
something coming yet, just salesman dribble about how good it's gonna be,
and we all should know that salesmen are the last ones to find out about new
products (the difference between a sales guy and a marketing guy is that the
marketing guy knows when he's lying). Kinda like the rumor going around
currently that Kenwood is looking to sell off their amateur radio division.
Kenwood & Icom have occasionally released new models in Japan before rest of
world, but is there a D7AG replacement there now? Even if there is, there's
been plenty of instances where new Japanese models never made it out to
anywhere else. With all that said, the D7 needs to be improved/replaced, so
come-on Kenwood, hurry it up!

Does anyone know how you can check the TH-D7A(G) version number that is
actually burned into firmware? Via radio keyboard, OR via PC/terminal
port?
AND, how about: what is the latest TH-D7A firmware version nubmer ?
Hello, Looking for some information on trying to connect these 2 items

I have posted this message on a few other groups, so hoping someone
will be able to give me a h and on what I'd need to connect the ht to

I guys. I purchased my THD7A 2 day ago, maked the cable but in my
laptop I have only usb ports. The soft is MCP-D7 BUT permits only
com1, 2, 3 or 4. I have a conversor usb to serial and drivers too. I
have a VX7R and works fine in my laptop, with my conversor but in COM
9. What can I do. Thnaks in advance and 73 from Patagonia.
Well, the manual is wrong. The TIP needs to go to the DIN9 pin 2 and the RING
needs to go to the DIN9 pin 3 and then ALL IS COOL.
Wouldn't you think that Kenwood would put a notice of that error in the Manual
in the supplemental papers that come along with a new unit. I have looked all
through mine and find no reference to the Manual error there.

Some things to watch out for:
The manual may have its markings reversed. So swap pins two and three
and see if you get a connection.
Also, if you're using the wire that came with the package and are
soldering it to a nine-pin connector, be aware that the colored enamel
insulation has to be melted off first. Use an ohmmeter to see if you
have continuity between the nine-pin and the mini stereo plug.
Some people have also mentioned that the cable supplied was defective
in some cases. A continuity check should also help determine that.
Good luck
