TCS (Taking Children Seriously)is an educational philosophy
and a way of life in which both parents and children take one
another seriously by finding/creating real solutions to problems --
solutions everyone involved prefers -- rather than imposing their
will on one another. The purpose of this list is to provide support
for parents striving to engage with their preschool-aged children in a
consent-based rather than coercive way. Please note that we are
using the term "preschooler" to refer to children around the ages
of 3 to 5. It is not intended to imply that the "preschooler"
will be going to school. Many of the parenting philosophies that
support taking babies' wants and needs seriously, tell parents of
preschool aged children that children need limits and discipline
(however gentle). TCS offers an alternative to these theories.
