Hi folks -
Got this email from Dena off-list regarding a forwarded email (see bottom of this email for the original, senders and recipients names removed to protect the guilty - LOL) and it has some good advice from Dena about why NOT to use your work computer to check personal emails, and why you should check info in an email before passing it on, so I'm forwarding it on to folks here.
Thanks, Dena!
:-)

Not to be mean or anything, but I worked in IT for years (too long to admit!) and there is nothing new to pass on about these kinds of things. And please be careful what email address you send this stuff to. I was part of the firing process of employees who spent time sending and reading emails that had nothing to do with work. Every email has time/date stamps and it's easy to tell how long someone spends reading and replying. Just be aware you might get someone in trouble at work. Where I work, employees have been fired for reading their yahoo email, using yahoo chat, as well as updating MySpace, FaceBook, etc. I guess folks don't realize that companies can and will fire you for this stuff. We had really neat software that we could watch whomever we wanted in realtime. I busted one chick for breaking the password on someone else's MySpace and then threatening to kill her and her children! Unbelievable and on a work computer during company hours, no less. She wound up explaining that one to the sheriff's dept. One of the most important people on our campus loves looking at porn. Because of his title, no one would fire him. But none of us would touch his computer without gloves on! He never realized why we would do that, it was funny! And what one person might consider funny, another will consider it racist.

I'm wondering if it would be a good idea to send this info to the TAB email address. Maybe someone who is braver than I am would like to, hint hint. And lastly, for those of you who think you can check your yahoo or hotmail or chat via yahoo or msn, etc. on a work computer and no one will know, think again! Everything leaves a trail. Just some tips I thought I would pass along. If you ever have questions about this stuff or the validity of what Patsy found out, Snopes is an excellent website to look things up, or feel free to contact me. It would be wise to verify all of these before forwarding by using snopes first. That way you won't accidentally forward a link to a virus, this happens a lot. I hope I didn't make anyone mad or embarrass anyone, just want to keep ya'll informed.

Neat poem, but none of the rest of it is true. It was not written by a terminally ill girl, there is no such thing as email tracking so the Cancer Society will not donate money, and no doctor is asking you to pass it on:

Slow
Dance

This
is a poem
written by a teenager with cancer.

She wants to
see how many
people get her poem.

It is quite the poem
Please pass it

on.

This

poem was written by a terminally ill young girl in a
New York

Hospital .

It was sent
by

a medical doctor -
Make sure to read what is in the closing statement
AFTER THE
POEM.

SLOW DANCE

Have you ever
watched
kids

On a merry-go-round?

Or listened to
the
rain

Slapping on the ground?

Ever followed a

butterfly's erratic flight?

Or gazed at the sun into the
fading
night?

You better slow down.

Don't
dance so
fast.

Time is short.

The music
won't
last.

Do you run through each day

On
the
fly?

When you ask How are you?

Do you hear
the
reply?

When the day is done

Do you lie
in your
bed

With the next hundred chores

Running through
your head?

You'd better
slow down

Don't dance so
fast.

Time is
short.

The music won't
last.

Ever told your
child,

We'll do it
tomorrow?

And in your
haste,

Not see
his

sorrow?

Ever lost
touch,

Let a good
friendship die

Cause you
never had time

To call
and say,'Hi'

You'd
better slow down.

Don't dance
so fast.

Time
is short.

The music won't
last.

When you run
so fast to get somewhere

You
miss half the fun of getting
there.

When you worry and hurry
through your
day,

It is like an unopened
gift....

Thrown
away.

Life is not a
race.

Do take it
slower

Hear the
music

Before the song is
over.

Dear All:
PLEASE pass this mail on to everyone you know -
even to those you don't
know! It is the request of a special girl who will soon
leave this world
due to cancer.

This young girl has 6 months left
to live,
and as her dying wish, she wanted to send a letter telling everyone to

live their life to the fullest, since she never will.

She'll
never make it to prom, graduate from high school,
or get married and have a
family of her own.

By you sending
this to as many people as
possible, you can give her and her family a
little hope, because with every name
that this is sent to, The American

Annual Boy Scout Winter Campout Rendezvous
                       February 19th, 20th, & 21st, 2010
                               Kaufman, Texas
Booshway~ Frank Shiels
Segundo ~ Samantha Three Jugs

  ~ No Camp Fee
~ Hawk, Knife, Archery & Rifle Competition
     (if there's enough interest)
~ Free Saturday Breakfast (at Three Jugs camp)
~ Free Saturday Evening Meal (at Troop Leaders Camp)
~ Award for 'Best Vous Camp'. A chance for you to show off you best period
camp. Selected Boy Scouts & Leaders will judge.
~ On 500+ acres of land that has been in the Shiels family since it was land
granted to them by the State of Texas. Ask grandpa Shiels about the original
deed. It states that the land was measured by the 'turn of the wagon wheel'.

Once again the Boy Scout Troop Leaders are inviting all who enjoy a good
rendezvous to join them for their annual February campout. Last year we
introduced the boys to the spirit of the 'vous with great response. They had a
chance to forge a knife, make a possibles bag, learn fire starting and compete
in the hawk, knife & black powder rifle competition.
You won't be asked to do anything other than set up camp and enjoy the
company. This will allow the boys to experience a more 'vous type atmosphere,
hopefully opening their eyes a little wider to what a real vous would be like.
Who knows, these boys may be the future of our 'vous.
Don't get me wrong, those of you who would like to help, people are always
needed to help with the various competitions. If you have one event that you
would like to help with or be in charge of, your help would be more than
welcome.
This is a chance for you to camp and show it off to boys who are eager to
learn more about everything from your favorite tent styles to why you wear your
jacket that way.
This is our third time to be invited to this gathering and it would be nice
if we could get some response from other vous'rs. The few who have helped in the
past years are returning to help, but having those few people show up to
represent the many rendezvous'rs out there is just ridiculous.

Off subject a bit here Taylor, Some folks were looking for rifles reciently and Midway is running a really good sale on Lyman Plains rifle kits. Flintlock kits for about $360 and percussion a little less. This is a pretty good deal. They offer them in 50 and 54 and these can be finished to be pretty period correct.

The following is off the www.texianlegacy.com page. This is always a great event. Hope you can make it!

Taylor

January 22-24, 2010 - Pilgrim's Camp and Swap Meet. This year we will be at the Presidio La Bahia in Goliad. As before, we are stating that the public is invited, in the intent of making sure our invitation is not misconstrued as "members only". -- Program TBA but will include Charlie Yates on "A History of the Presidio". There has been a request for a presentation on "Becoming a Reenactor: How To Go From Spectator To Joining In The Fun". Email Jerry Tubbs if you want in on that.
Folks from several different Texas Rev groups have joined together to organize this annual event with the goal of providing a friendly, safe, informative and fun place for "civilians" to explore their interest in living history and for "old hands" to pass on their knowledge and expertise. Camping will be available in two camps; one for modern camping and one for period camping. Camp setup will be on Friday and we can tear down as late as Sunday afternoon. There will be an all-day opportunity for one-on-one discussions on the various levels of living history; the philosophy and goals of our avocation; weapons, clothing and tools of the period; historical research, and, above all else: safety issues. In order to provide an environment most conducive to learning, the event will be focused toward living historians, reënactors, those curious about our hobby, and those interested in possibly joining us. If you have been interested in this part of Texas history, or have wondered "how could I", then this is the event for you.
Ever wonder how this event got started? Click here.
In conjunction with the "Pilgrim's" Camp, the "old hands" are encouraged to bring their surplus gear, equipment, clothes and accouterments for an old fashioned trading session and swap meet. Be sure to bring those items you no longer have a need for.
If you're a living historian interested in helping lead one of the presentations or simply someone interested in getting involved in the wonderful world of early Texas, contact Jerry Tubbs (telephone 713-973-1136) or Charlie Yates. This year you will need to bring firewood and we will have real bathrooms (which also means water will be available). Of course, we are at the mercy of any burn bans, but at this site fire pits are allowed as long as you replace the sod, as usual. Since there will be visitors at the Presidio, period dress, though not required, is definitely encouraged. This event is rated 1.

There were five cannon and a mortar.  They were rocking the parade ground every hour!
The snow was quite a site! Woke up Friday morning with two inches on the ground and more falling.  It's amazing how warm a canvas tent with a wood stove can be!!

Thanks, Josh. We were all set to go to Ft. Concho, but then this came up.... Looks like we missed some snow, saw some pics of Cat & Pinky's. We stayed warm here though. :-) We'll try to make it again next year, it's always good to see that many reenactors who are passionate about so many different eras and events, from the Fur Trade all the way up to Viet Nam! Did they have the cannons there again? Love that night-time volley!

Our daughter-in- law,  Emily (MacInnes) Somers, created, directed and choreographed this in Portland last week for her Medline glove division as a fundraiser for breast cancer awareness.  This was all her idea to help promote their new pink gloves.  I don't know how she got so many employees, doctors and patients to participate, but it started to really catch on and they all had a lot of fun doing it.

When the video gets 1 million hits, Medline will be making a huge contribution to the hospital, as well as offering free mammograms for the community.  Please check it out.  It's an easy and great way to donate to a wonderful cause, and who hasn't been touched by breast cancer?

First: Thanks a bunch Jim, I do appreciate the offer and so does Cuz.

Second: The apple don't fall far from the tree, does it? :-) She seemed to be getting a litle of that spark back this afternoon. I'm getting a rehab place lined up tomorrow, right down the street from where she was in Bastrop, and one of her friends named Jody and her little dog Max live over there - Jody is a rounder and that will give mama someone to git into trouble with. Perhaps they will sneak out for a glass of wine.

Third: I think you were the result of your mama eating too many dill pickles and ice cream snacks!

Thank you Tim, for your compliments to me and Mama both, and for your kind wishes. She IS a good 'un, and a real pistol too. :-) Four ambulance rides for her this week and several emergency room visits kinda took their toll on both of us, thought I was gonna lose her last night, and have to make that choice whether to operate or not, but she seems to be rallying a little bit today and I am hopeful she can pull out of this. She's always been tough, she could climb up and over a barbed wire fence at the post, unaided, at age 87.

Hopefully if we can get her someplace where they can do physical rehab after they dismiss her and get her stronger, she can go back to assisted living where she was. I am sure her new boyfriend there misses her, and the other widow-ladies might make a move on him. :-) Been razzing her about that, makes her laugh. And to me, laughter is the best medicine there is.... Mama thinks so too, when she was pregnant with me, she prayed that I would have a sense of humor - let THAT be a lesson to ya to be careful what you ask for!LOL

Had to take her back and forth to the hospital in Smithville a couple of times, wound up at Brackenridge in Austin twice and now she is in ICU at Brackenridge. Last Thursday the neurosurgeon said they could do surgery to relieve the clot and the pressure on the brain, but he and I both felt that at her age, that "cure" is going to be harder on her than the condition is... But this morning the neurosurgeon said the blood clot is contained and they are not going to do surgery. One good thing is, she has not been on life support and won't be, because she is 95 and has some dementia, and does not want to be hooked up to a machine forever. She hasn't need it yet though anyway. She is conscious and is acting more like a regular 95-year-old nowadays, rather than her usual "acting-and- looking-20- years-younger" level, but is seeming to get a little better today in terms of staying awake a little better and being a bit more responsive. They will keep her another day for observation, and hopefully then medicare will kick in enough to get her some skilled-nursing/ rehab/physical therapy when she gets out, with the idea of returning to assisted living later if she is able. The assisted place where she lives is wonderful, but not set up for that level of care. So we are working it one day at a time, but things are looking a little better today.

Thanks again for your friendship, it really means a lot.
Patsy

Thanks, Josh. We were all set to go to Ft. Concho, but then this came up.... Looks like we missed some snow, saw some pics of Cat & Pinky's. We stayed warm here though. :-) We'll try to make it again next year, it's always good to see that many reenactors who are passionate about so many different eras and events, from the Fur Trade all the way up to Viet Nam! Did they have the cannons there again? Love that night-time volley!
