Although we generally do not meet on Mondays when Scotch Plains Fanwood schools are not in session, we have *much* to do to prepare for next weekend’s camporee.  All Scouts meet at 7:30pm at the Church on Monday – and the PLC should get there at least 30 minutes early (no later than 7:00) to have a brief planning meeting in advance (if your Scout was *elected* to a leadership position in September, then he is a member of the Patrol Leader’s Council – only those leaders need to come early).

During the meeting the scouts will:

  • Have patrols plan their menus, shopping, and cooking
  • Have patrols do a little more catapult designing/lashing practice
  • Have the Troop pack the trailer for next weekend’s trip

The trip is going to be great!  We have about 60 people coming out – Scouts, parents, and even a handful of Webelos II (AOL’s) that are getting a jump start on next year’s Boy Scouting adventures.

Reminder,

We will be having a regular scout meeting tomorrow evening, at 7:30. Please
attend even if you are "prepared" for the camporee since there are menus to
plan, a trailer to pack, and other things to get accomplished.

There will be a short PLC meeting at 7:00, prior to the regular meeting.
PLC meetings involve all elected staff in the Troop (Patrols Leaders, ASPLs,
Guides, Scribe, Quartermasters, ASPLs, Webmaster and the SPL).

The latest Camporee Guide document is attached.

Hey all Camporee Units!

Just wanted to check in and let you know about some Camporee
updates! Its going to be a great Camporee as we have 23 Troops signed up!!!
If you have more Scouts than what you registered for, you can still register
them (see Camporee Guide).

I hope everyone has practiced building their catapults.. as it will
be pretty competitive on feedback I have been getting.. GOOD LUCK to your
patrols! Remember that catapults and the competitions are Scout run. Do
please make sure each catapult is SAFE to operate.

I will be sending out an email on an update on final program stuff
next week with a final Program Schedule.

The 2012 WMRV Olympic Medal recipients (by patrol) will have the
combined scores from:

The Friday night SPL/Staff Hunt
The Catapult Competition
The Olympics!

Don't forget about the other competitions: Scout Duct Tape
Competition, Scout Best Tasting Desert Competition and the Adult Gateway
competition!

To the Adults Camping this weekend (Burton, Cerini, Downey, Genty, Kaiser, Lynch, McIntyre, O'Brien, Okell, Resnicoff, Rhein, Venick, Bumiller, Sherman, Eviner, Johns, Lee, Patel, Thal):

Things are really shaping up for the Camporee..

We have a record 19 adults coming out -- GREAT involvement, but enough that we need to prepare our meal plans carefully.  With that much food, our typical practice will not scale.  Instead, we are going be a little more structured -- much like the Scout patrols!  I am asking for 2-3 adults to step up as "Adult Patrol Leaders" and:

    *  take responsibility for coordinating the menu (tonight's meeting would be a perfect time),
    *  be responsible for the shopping, and then for
    *  making the "duty roster" (who prepares each meal and cleans up).

I'll leave it up to you whether you want to actually cook and eat in multiple "patrols" or not.

I would strongly prefer that the heavily-committed "brown shirts" not take on this responsibility -- there's too much else going on with the number of Scouts, the 5 Webelos guests, and with helping the District run the Camporee.  We will all be available for jobs on the duty roster (cooking and cleaning at various meals) but the 2-3 "Patrol Leaders" I'm asking to step up should be the ones accountable.

Typically, for meals at busy Camporees we do something like this:

Friday evening -- bring a sandwich to eat either in the car, or after camp is set up.  No Cooking.

Saturday Breakfast -- Eggs and Sausage, Juice and sometimes Croissants or muffins.

Saturday Lunch -- Something easy and quick.  A Stew that can simmer all morning is good, or even burgers/dogs that can be made rapidly.

Saturday Dinner -- Wide open.  Chicken is a favorite choice -- your favorite preparation -- but you can go hog wild and even roast turkeys if you like. No groundfires though.

Sunday Breakfast -- Eggs and Sausage, Juice and sometimes Croissants or muffins.

Please try and come tonight and we can put our heads together and get this arranged.  This weekend is going to be a blast -- you'll enjoy it!

Thanks,
Bill Sherman

Hi all,

I am writing on behalf of Colin Okell, the quartermaster. Since we currently have no phone, tv or internet at home (tech coming tomorrow, supposedly) and he has been having problems with his Wifi adaptor, my office email is our only current recourse.

Even though there was a lot packed up in the trailer on Monday night, we still need to pack up the patrol boxes and store them on the trailer. I would like to request that available members of each patrol (those who are not shopping that night or even not going to the camporee for that matter) help in this matter. We are planning to pack the boxes on Thursday night at 7 pm. If you are available, please come to the back of the church to help. Remember, many hands make for light work. Hope to see you then.

Scout and Adults,

A few reminders about this weekend's camporee:

1) We are convening at the Church at 4:30 on Friday.  We plan to depart at 5:00.  Please make every effort to adjust your work schedule around this.  Remember, the adult volunteers in the troop do this every month, and many of us work a lot farther away...  ;-)   We are counting on every seat belt in every car, so we cannot really "recover easily" if people get held up (and we wait for every scout to be in a seat belt to depart)

2) Bring warm gear (layers), rain gear, and consider a folding chair since we are in a field, not the woods -- so seating options are slim-to-none.

3) Thanks to Bob Okell and Noel Downey for stepping up as adult "patrol leaders" and taking responsibility for adult food.

4) As our quartermaster suggested in an earlier message, we are PACKING THE TRAILER Thursday night at 7.  We don't need everybody, but we could definitely use about half of the scouts.  Please coordinate with your patrol leaders and see if you can get half of the guys in each patrol there.  With a lot of hands, it will be done in 45 minutes.

5) Attached is the latest email with the final Camporee Guide (sorry that it is the 4th time) -- the schedule has been updated.

6) If you haven't been camping with us before, check out the suggested gear at http://home.comcast.net/~troop104sp/site/?/page/Camping/

Hey all Camporee Units!  We are going to have an awesome Camporee.  We have
24 Units signed up with over 470 people!  Which unit will GO for the
GOLD?????????????

Anyways a few housekeeping issues:

1.  Please see the attached updated Camporee guide (final schedule).
Reminder:  New program Friday evening:   SPL/Staff HUNT!
(patrol)

2.  Please do not arrive earlier than 5:00pm as we are finishing setup/
please be complete with tear down 10:30am Sunday.

3.  Bring GPS units for the GPS Geocache course

4.  Scouts should bring patches to trade -- we will have starter kits if any
Scouts need for a startup.  This will be trading Scout to Scout.

5.  Don't forget that all the patrol competition points are rolling together
to form an overall winner of the OLYMPICS overall.

6.  Please no cars on the Camporee field!  This is a safety issue and I WILL
YELL! :).  Trailers will be diagonally parked along the edge of the parking
area.

7.  When you arrive, please have the Scoutmaster/SPL come to HQ for checking
and show you your site.  Please have your paperwork ready.

8.  All additions must be paid on Friday evening.

9.  IS your unit/patrols prepared for all the competitions (duct tape/best
tasting desert............)

GO FOR GOLD!

We have been working hard on planning -- now is the time to have fun!   The
last catapult Camporee was awesome ( remember no preassembled catapults and
this is a Scout led activities.. don't get point deductions for adult
intervention!)

If you have problems on Friday, please contact me:  908-285-8730 on my cell.

Thanks and see everyone this weekend!  GOLD GOLD GOLD!

I get frequent calls from parents and scouts trying to figure out how to reach another scout in the troop.  For this reason, we distribute the troop and patrol and leadership roster whenever it changes significantly.  Attached is the current one, for your information.  For security we password protect it since it includes unlisted phone numbers -- but since this may be part of the reason that people don't post it on their walls and use it regularly, I'll break with protocol this time and tell you that the password is 1984.  It is also stored on our website, http://home.comcast.net/~troop104sp/site/

I have also included a copy of the roster annotated with color-coded listings of who from each patrol is attending the camporee, and which patrols are "teaming up" to normalize the size of the patrols.  This can be very helpful when organizing shopping trips, or changing plans -- please print it out and keep it handy!

Only kidding.  It will actually be 22 degrees at Sabattis Adventure Camp in the Adirondacks, where we go to summer camp, but not down here in NJ.

But I got your attention, though, didn't I?  I just wanted to remind Scouts and families to pack layers of clothing --- it may get as cool as the upper 20's down here tonight; but it could be in the 60's during the day this weekend.  Thin layers that can be added or removed as the temperature changes make the weather a non-issue.  Don't forget a knit hat and perhaps a thin pair of gloves for late-night.

The outlook suggests that it will be dry, which is great.  Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Church at 4:30.  Please remember that we wait for everyone to arrive and get in a seat belt before we leave (as a unit) -- so make sure and let us know in advance if someone got up this morning with the sniffles and has to cancel.

Thanks,

We will not be having any open fires in Round Valley, since we will be in a parade field and it is not allowed.  We WILL be able to borrow a portable "fire pit"  -- if any of you have firewood that you could bring (we have tried before and there is not much suitable firewood in the area) then please throw some in your trunk and bring it along.

Send Email Send Email

There are several opportunities for our Scouts to get involved over the next few weeks  Here is what I know of at this moment:

* Saturday 10/20
Volunteer Boy Scouts are needed at the CUB Scout Camporee at Winnebago -- all day long (8:00am-9:00pm).
Scouts can volunteer for any portion of this time -- the biggest logistical issue might be transportation to/from since
our Troop is not doing anything organized for this activity -- it would be individual scouts volunteering.
If interested, contact me at bgsherman@....

* Sunday 10/21
Councilman and Scout Dad Mike Szuch sent around the reminder that the Fanwood 5k is looking for volunteers
to help with the execution of the Fanwood 5k run.  8a-11a but see the mail from the Szuch's on how to
send an email in advance so that they know who will be helping

* Monday 10/22
TURN IN POPCORN ORDERS.  Remember, this is the larger of our two fundraisers for the year, and we will use
the funds raised to repair and augment our troop gear (tents, cooking gear).  Do not forget that you can email
to family and friends who can order online!

* Monday 10/22
Bring in a permission slip of you're planning to attend the Groundfire Cooking campout on 11/3-11/5.
The permission slip is attached -- we are looking for a reliable RSVP sooner rather than later
this time -- the Camporee had roster changes down to the wire and it causes a lot of leader replanning.

* Sunday 10/28
Lions Club Pancake Breakfast @ Scotch Hills Golf Club
Scouts assist 8:00-10:15, 10:00-12:15 or both shifts.  The Lions make the pancakes and the Scouts
are servers and busboys.  This is a major fundraiser for the Lions' Club and they are always a strong
supporter of Scouting.  We generally ask each member to work at least one shift at this event.

* Friday 11/3 - Sunday 11/5
  GroundFire Cooking Campout at Winnebago.
Details below.  Please return this permission slip in person on Monday 10/22 or via email to t-104-leaders@yahoogroups.com

* Saturday 11/17
Council is holding a Merit Badge Workshop @ Brooklawn Middle School (Beachwood Road @ Rt. 202), Parsippany.
This is an individual event opportunity -- you are responsible for signup, payment, and transportation -- though there
are often carpooling options with other scouts -- send mail to the troop at t-104@yahoogroups.com to pair up.
Registration is at   Details about this opportunity are in the attached flyer.

Groundfire Cooking Campout Details:

The scouts will break up into groups of 2-4 (typically multiple groups per patrol) and each group will prepare their own menu, shop, and cook.  The cooking will be performed over scout-made wood fires (not on propane stoves) so keep that in mind when choosing your menu.  Fires do not put out as much heat (or as steady a heat) as stoves.  We typically do some hiking on Saturday afternoon, so be prepared with your hiking boots, water bottle, compass and perhaps a day pack.  Patrols will focus on the skills required for this campout, as well as gear staging and maintenance over the next two meetings.

Hi guys,

This Sunday I will be working on my Eagle Project and I need some volunteers. I will be working at Brunner Elementary School in both the Children's Garden and the Memorial garden in the back of the school. I have already began weeding and cleaning the Children's Garden. This Sunday I plan to finish those things, spread mulch, plant shrubs and put in railroad ties as an edging material. I will be working from 9am-12:30ish. If you are able to come, please bring work gloves and any: wheelbarrows, shovels or rakes will be helpful. I have a few wheelbarrows and shovels already but the more tools we have, the more efficiently we can work. Please let me know if you can make it. Scouts,

Those of you who were paying attention last Monday, and/or who read my email last week about the calendar, have probably realized that TJ tried to schedule an eagle work opportunity on top of the Pancake Breakfast, which all of our Scouts will be attending for either first (8-10:15) and/or second (10-12:15) shifts...  so that would make it pretty hard to help TJ's Eagle project too.

I have reminded TJ that T104 Scouts will be busy in the morning and urged him to figure out a way to schedule time when you can pitch in to help his project.  I imagine that you'll receive an update from him later today.  As you know, helping Eagle Candidates is a very important responsibility too.

In the mean time, let me reiterate, Troop 104 needs virtually all of our Scouts to work one or both shifts of the Pancake Breakfast, in your full Class A uniform.  Sometime over the next day, I will send out a reminder of the shift(s) that you signed up for  (along with a request for those that have not yet signed up).  At this point, second shift needs more workers.

Thanks,
Troop 104

Scout Families,

As far as we know (and we don't expect this to change), the Lions' Club Pancake breakfast will be held tomorrow morning. All of our Scouts tend to work one of the shifts.  They arrive in full Class A uniforms, have a bite to eat themselves, then act as waiters and busboys for the Lions.  It is a great time — the patrons are very respectful and appreciative of the scouts and the scouts always enjoy it.  Some scouts like to bring a small notepad and pen to "be prepared" to take orders from the tables.  No experience is necessary, and everyone does well at it.

No doubt you are all hearing about the storm that is approaching in the Atlantic.    Though it will be raining on Sunday, we do not think that "the storm" will really hit us until later on Monday.  So the pancake breakfast is ON. Below is a list of the shifts that the scouts have signed up for thus far.  Email changes to me at bgsherman@... or to the full leaders' email list at t-104-leaders@yahoogroups.com

However, in the event that Scotch Plains/Fanwood Schools call an "Early Dismissal" on Monday, there will be no Troop Meeting on Monday night.  If that happens then our ground fire camping campout next weekend will be in jeopardy. We'll have to see mid-week.

I would stay to keep in touch via email, but it is possible that some will be without email.  As such, please print out a copy of our troop roster of phone numbers and have it handy (one is attached).  In the event that we need to convey news in the midst of a communications outage, the hierarchy of the scout troop and patrols will be utilized:  The adult leaders will communicate with the Senior Patrol Leader, who will in turn contact his Senior Leadership and Patrol Leaders, and those Patrol Leaders will contact their patrol members.  Similarly, you may each "call up the chain" if you have questions.

Stay safe, be prepared, and we'll see you at the pancake breakfast in the morning.

Subject: No Scout Meeting Monday -- hold Thursday evening for a potential replacement meeting

Thanks to all of the Scouts who came out this morning to serve the pubic at the Lions' Pancake Breakfast.  We got very positive feedback from both the Lions and the customers.

As I foreshadowed in yesterday's email message, we will not have  Scout meeting Monday night.  Please stay home and be safe.

At this point, we are still hoping to hold our "ground fire cooking" campout next weekend, but a few things have to line up first:
  • I need to get an "all-clear" from the camp master that the camp has been inspected for safety.  I don't expect to get this all-clear until at least Wednesday evening
  • Once we have that all-clear, we need to have a camping prep meeting to line up cooking pairs/triples, tent mates, and have scouts pack the patrol boxes with the gear they will need for cooking over fires.  The only viable time for this meeting is Thursday night, at 7:30.  We will tentatively schedule that meeting now.
  • We need to pack the trailer with that gear.
Since Scouts all shop (individually or in pairs/triples) for their own food for a ground fire campout, this means that Scouts are going to have to shop for that food Friday right after school, and then get their food and gear to the church after that.  Given this scheduling change, we will understand if Scouts decide to skip this campout, but please don't come on Thursday, pair up, make a plan, and then cancel on Friday.  If we pull of this Thursday meeting, we need a firm headcount that evening; it is not fair to your fellow scouts to say yes on Thursday and cancel on Friday.

We will keep you posted throughout the week via email.  Call your patrol leader, SPL, or an adult leader if you have questions.
