Hello, all!

Due to renovations at Hazel Parker Playground, we will be having our swing dances at another location. We have found a new temporary venue! It is called St. Julian Devine Center, 1 Cooper Street in downtown Charleston. Our first night will be this Saturday, November 28th. Please still continue to check the website and for e-mails about updates. (The website will be updated shortly.)

**Very important: The dances will be on Fridays or Saturdays.** Here are the next four weeks:
Nov 28th, Saturday
Dec 5th, Saturday- dance only 8-11pm; NO LESSONS; Lindy Loves Soul
Dec 11th, Friday
Dec 18th, Friday

The lessons will be at 6pm (intermediate) and 7pm (basic) and the dance 8-11pm. Admission price is $5 general admission and $3 for CSDA members.

We will be on the third floor of the building with a beautiful view of the Cooper River and the bridge! The dance floor is a smooth tile floor. St. Julian Devine Center is a city-owned community center. It is a brick building with very tall double smoke stacks near the entrance to the Arthur Ravenal Bridge on East Bay Street. If you are driving up East Bay Street toward the bridge, the building is on the left before the entrance to the bridge. It doesn't have a large sign, but you can't miss the very tall double smoke stacks! The entrance to the building is on Drake Street, near the corner of Cooper Street. There is parking lot next to the building and a gravel lot across Cooper Street. Note that the surrounding neighborhood is not the safest, so be cautious!

Thank you to all who spread the word about last Saturday's dance at the Majestic Grill with such short notice! It was amazing to see over 80 people there when we changed the location one day before! Please spread the news about the new temporary venue!

Have a very Happy Thanksgiving!
See you on the dance floor!
Marisa

For those of you who didn't know, there is another dance group/dance opportunity in town, the Charleston Rugcutters. www.charlestonrugcutters.weebly.com  This is a dance that occurs twice a month, that is a combination of Swing and Ballroom music. The next dance will be on Tue, November 17th. The lesson that night will be the Waltz. And as usual, the music will be a mixture of Swing and Ballroom music.

Hey all,

There's a great band, the Two Men Gentlemen Band, playing this coming Wed, Oct 14 at The Pour House. Doors open at 8pm. Show will likely start around 9pm, but definitely show up around 8:30pm to be sure. Price is $10, and the show includes the Two Men opening for The Infamous Stringdusters (bluegrass band).

The Two Men play neo vaudevillian-swing music. They have a classic sound with hilarious lyrics. Their pace can be fast sometimes (like Charleston and balboa speed), but still very fun to dance to or just hang out and listen to. They handed out kazoos the last time we saw them. Seriously, they are a great show!

Anyhoo, The Pour House is located on Maybank Highway, just down the road from J Paulz. It should be a great show. Look forward to seeing everyone there. Check out their websites below for samples of their music.

Hi all,

We are all in for a treat this weekend!  Charleston's own, Daniel McClain, will be holding a Lindy Hop Workshop this weekend on Sat (Sept 26) and Sun (Sept 27) at Spirit Moves studio in West Ashley.  (Address, directions, times, prices and details are below.)

The Beginner track is on Saturday, which will be a great introduction to lindy hop fundamentals, as well as a great review for those well-established in the dance.

The Intermediate/Advanced lesson will be on Sunday.  Several intermediate/advanced lindy hoppers are looking forward to these classes (so no beginners on Sunday please).

Please note the times are different for both days.  Saturday's lessons are from 4:15pm-7:45pm, and Sunday's lessons are from 11:30am-3:00pm.

Check out the Facebook event at http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=143303671390&index=1

Daniel McClain has been dancing lindy hop for 6 years and teaching dance professionally for 4 years.  His dancing style has been recognized for its powerful moves, crisp accuracy, and creative musicality.   Daniel has been recognized in regional competitions, placing at Lindy Focus, the Atlanta Varsity Showdown (AVS), and Boston Tea Party.  He has an amazing talent for teaching dance, being able to break moves down into pieces that dancers of all levels can understand, and having the unique ability to recognize exactly the areas where his students need to work on.  This workshop is not to be missed!!

Please e-mail dwmlindyking@gmail or call Daniel at 843-817-3616 if you have any questions.  There is no pre-registration.  Just show up.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there :)

--

Directions to: Spirit Moves, at 445 Savannah Hwy (Hwy 17, West Ashley)

If you're coming from downtown on Hwy 17, as you enter West Ashley, make a U-turn at the first light (before Ye Ol Fashioned Ice Cream Parlor) and then it'll be on your right-- just before you get back on the little bridge back downtown.  There are 2 parking lots, both before and after Spirit Moves, so if you miss the first lot, turn into the second.  If you end up on the bridge, you just missed it!

Hi all,

Just wanted everyone to know about an upcoming workshop opportunity for those of you new to swing and also the veterans who have been dancing for years.

Daniel McClain will be holding a workshop next weekend on September 26 and 27th at Spirit Moves studio in West Ashley.  (Address and directions are below.)

He'll be teaching the Beginner track on Saturday, which will be a great introduction to lindy hop fundamentals, as well as a great review for those well-established in the dance.

The intermediate/advanced lesson will be on Sunday.  I know a lot of intermediate/advanced lindy hoppers are looking forward to these classes (so no beginners on Sunday please).

The class schedule and more information is below.     Please e-mail dwmlindyking@gmail or call Daniel at 843-817-3616 if you have any questions.

Looking forward to seeing everyone there :)

-Jan

Dancing in Colorado gets better each year!
We have an amazing dance community here; cooporation, teamwork, friendship, and

harmony to create a wonderful community. Words cannot express my gratitude.

Over the past 10 years we our community has thrived. We have danced a lot, had a
great time, made lifetime friends, and have good memories growing in our dance
and advancing our lives. I was recently watching some videos from events in
Colorado from 11 years ago. My we have all grown so much! Some are now
national and international dance champions and instructors. We are so fortunate
to continually have all the Lindy Hop Greats join us in Denver each year. As a
result, dancers from all across the country come here to dance.this event is no
exception.

Hey Carolina swing dancers!

Wanna dance the Big Apple IN The Big Apple Club?

Sorry for the late notice, but this weekend I'm heading for Columbia, SC - home of the historic Big Apple club (where the Big Apple dance sensation originated) - and it would be great if some of you could come join me for all or part of a great weekend of dancing and learning.

The event is called "Big Apple Comes Home."
It features:
Live music on Friday and Saturday night provided by the Solomon Douglas' Quintet (Friday) and Swingtet (10 piece band on Saturday). Solomon is world reknowned for his lindy hop friendly music and is also a top notch Lindy Hop instructor and performer himself.
Classes in Big Apple, Little Apple and 20s Charleston with dance historian and Big Apple expert Lance Benishek (from Minnesota), assisted by Denise Steele (from Oregon).

Also present will be Jean Foreman, one of the original 16 Big Apple dancers who went to New York City and performed the dance at the Roxy - thus introducing the dance to the rest of the world and beginning the craze that inspired Frankie Manning's famous choreography in the movie "Keep Punchin."
The event is sponsored by the Columbia dance leaders Richard Durlach & Breedlove, The Historic Columbia Foundation, and Teh Palmetto Swing Dance Association.

Visit http://bigappledance.info/ for nice overview of the event.

I'll be attending as a student and dancer and would love to spend time with other dancers who are willing to make a couple hour drive just to have a fantastic time! Call me or email if I can help get you to this great event. It's a wonderful opportunity.

Hope to see you there!

PS Below is a litle historic information from the website for you. All Lindy Hoppers should be familiar with this story.

The Big Apple Comes Home

Most dancers might be familiar with the dance routine known as the Big Apple. The choreographed routine comes from a scene in the movie, "Keep Punching" choreographed by the late Frankie Manning. This routine is NOT what will be taught at the Big Apple Comes Home. The "Keep Punching" routine was the result of a dance craze called The Big Apple which was a social dance consisting of countless jazz moves that were called out. The social version of this dance is what Lance Benishek will be teaching in Columbia, SC, the city where it all got started. .

Lindy Hop fans, do you love your dance history?

Did you know that in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1936, three University of South Carolina students were passing by when they were enticed to stop by the sounds of jazz and good times coming from inside the old synagogue on Gate Street. It was a time of Jim Crow segregation in the South, but the three persuaded the owner of the Big Apple Nightclub to let them in, provided they remained in the old synagogue balcony and not on the dance floor.

From the balcony the trio observed African American young people combining jazzy swing steps with dance moves from their uniquely southern culture. Arguably both styles were of African American origin. Soon they brought more friends to see the exciting circular dance. Lucretia Cayruth was on the dance floor and tells us that during this time of America’s great depression the white kids came often and threw coins down to feed the juke box and keep the action going.

The dance was imitated, passed on to friends, and named The Big Apple after the night club where it first came to the attention of white dancers. By the summer of 1937, it was the hot new thing at the Pavilion in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Quickly, word spread about the new dance craze. An agent from the Roxy Theatre came south to audition dancers to present it in New York City. By September, 16 dancers were in New York performing to standing room only audiences.

Lance Benishek, who studied with nine of the original dancers, believes it was America’s third largest dance craze (after the Charleston and the twist). September 11, 12, and 13, 2009, Lance will be in Columbia to teach the dance from the same historic dance floor where it began. Also in attendance to meet you and answer your questions about this phenomenon will be Jean Foreman, one of the original Roxy dancers.

The Historic Columbia Foundation has made the landmark Big Apple Nightclub available for the weekend’s festivities. Join the Palmetto Swing Dance Association in Columbia! Dance to the music of Solomon Douglas on the same wood where so many swing dancers came before you. Share the memories (and moves) of an original Big Apple Dancer.

This is NOT TO BE MISSED!

Good morning Marisa,

I visited your Swing dance group while in Charleston one evening about a year and a half ago.  I wish I lived closer to attend your functions!!  Anyway, I am on your email list and thought I would share some news with you to pass along to the group and anyone else you may think is interested.  I am in Ayden NC (Near Greenville NC) and we are having a Black Tie Collard Festival Benefit Ball on Sept. 26.  We will have silent auction, 50/50 raffle, Dance demonstrators (would love someone from your group or competitors), etc.  Andrew Theilan Big Band will be there for the evening.  Please forward this information to anyone who may be interested, it will be a grand time, with red carpet and all!  Go to the link below for more information:

Thank you so much for your contribution to the dance group!

Kind regards,
Valerie Fant

Hey,
Does Gage Hall have handicap access? I seem to remember there not being any steps out front, or just a few? I don't remember about the bathrooms. I'm considering bringing my mom who is in a wheelchair (and was once a dance teacher) and my 88 year old aunt (who still goes "jookin" every chance she can and who won a truckin' contest back in the day) with me. Also, does anyone know if there is handicap access parking nearby?

Thanks,
Jamie

Two very quick things guys and gals,

First...we have a lindy bomb on the CofC campus TODAY...THURSDAY...6:30pm, for about an hour at the corner of St. Phillip and George Sts downtown. It's dancing on the street, and it's free, and it's purpose is to grab attention of anyone passing by. If they stop and stare at us and say "I wish I could dance like that" we pop in with a "And now you can...tomorrow night at Gage Hall (4 Archdale St, downtown)....and to a LIVE BAND!"

The site for all the info on THAT is http://charlestonswing.weebly.com/events.html

and check out our regular weekly events on Thur. at J. Paulz (James Island..corner of Folly Rd and Maybank Hwy) and Saturdays at Hazel Parker Playground (70 East Bay St).
All info on times and lessons and everything is there.

One more question. Does anyone have the "SWING DANCE" signs. I know they left with us from Majestic, but who has them now? Whoever it is,...just please bring them to Gage Hall on Friday night so we can stick them out there.

That is all. Check out the sites and the events...it's gonna be FUN!

Your Friend,

Shane

Dear Charleston Lindy Hoppers,

SONH is only 10 days away! If you've been unsure if you could make it,
I'm happy to announce that we still do have some room at most levels.
Registration will stay open until every spot is filled.

Please register online. We'll get back to you right away if there's a
wait list at the level where you see yourself. If that level is filled,
we'll be happy to place you in any other level for which you're
qualified, or you can join the wait list.

I hope you can join us at SONH this summer. Even if you can't make it
yourself this year, please let your friends know there is still some
room. It's always a fluid situation right up until the start of camp, so
please check with us.
