Sustainable-Communities is a low-volume moderated and publicly archived mailing list focusing on sustainable living practices at a community level, particularly development and management of sustainable intentional communities. Topics include sustainable building practices, architect and builder involvement, energy efficiency, energy conservation, renewable energy generation such as solar wind and hydro, rainwater collection, waste systems including composting, resource sharing, and goods and services exchange.a

The average sustainable community exists at the level of city block, development subdivision or small town. A sustainable community may be as small as two households sharing resources like renewable electricity generation or a composting waste system. No upper limit exists, except by the definition of the word 'community'. Sustainable communities may form for many reasons, including shared interest, cost/risk mitigation or a simple desire for a community-connected lifestyle.

Sustainability on a family or community level can be achieved with minimal but focused lifestyle changes. Key changes include determination, common sense, proven practices, and applied technologies.
