Like you, I am trying to figure out what the heck went wrong and where
was the early help in the Katrina Hurricane? A very telling article in
the NY Times this morning stated:
"For reasons of practicality and politics, officials at the Justice
Department and the Pentagon, and then at the White House, decided not to
urge Mr. Bush to take command of the effort. Instead, the Washington
officials decided to rely on the growing number of National Guard
personnel flowing into Louisiana, who were under Gov. Kathleen Babineaux
Blanco's control."

So, let's look at the facts: Bush put people in FEMA who were clueless
about disaster relief and have been cited over and over again as more of
a hinderance than a help. FEMA sexual harassment classes went on for a
full day for rescuers when people were dieing and needing help. There
were political uncertainties about disaster response because as was
stated in the article above cited, that after 9-11 the disaster relief
plans did not take into account the fact that local, first-respondesr,
such as firemen, police and emergency medical personnel may also be
affected by the disaster.
The LA Governor turned away relief help so the people would be willing
to leave.
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=46224 The
infrastructure of the city was inept as its police force is corrupt.
There are tales of rescuers asking women to "flash them their stuff" and
when they refused, the rescuers moved on down the road. Neither the
Governor nor the Mayor, knowing of a huge impending disaster, used a
fleetload of school buses to get people out of harms way. They did not
ask for use of Navy nor pleasure boats to evacuate. They simply left
people to their own devices knowing a large portion of their population
are not used to caring for themselves, having been raised in the welfare
system and having no idea how to care for themselves.
The mayor seemed to me to also have a typical "poverty" mindset. WHO is
gong to help us. WHERE is the help. I have to ask where was his
leadership in his city to get people out of there? Where were his
disaster plans in a place well known for hurricanes?? If he had had
busloads of people wandering the state, cities would have found them
shelters as was evident by the response afterwards. At least they would
have been where bathrooms and water were available at gas stations even
if they had to sleep on the bus! If the National Guard had been there in
force as buses were loaded, patting down people and removing weapons and
breaking up gangs, not letting them ride together etc this huge loss of
life (both from flood and gangs) could have been averted.
In the first three days of disaster it is not the huge agencies that are
going to help. It is the city and the state that help the first three
days. But really in the first 24 hours it is the people helping
themselves. People need to have 72 hr kits with food, water and
clothing to help themselves. Neighborhoods need to have disaster plans
(ours does). Cities and states need to have well thought out disaster
plans. In the case of a hurricane where advance notice is given, this
extensive loss of life is unacceptable. The people left behind first
failed themselves, then the government at every level failed them.
The answer is not in more federal control during a disaster, but plans
in place at the local levels to care for themselves, then reach out to
the federal govt as a supplement. If the local officials are incapicated
due to a disaster, have a back-up plan in place such as surrounding
cities and states sending in their help, all ready FEMA trained if that
is so darn important (and I doubt that it is). Have phone numbers all
ready in place to coordinate volunteer efforts in case of disasters.
Volunteers with boats could have gotten rescuers where they needed to
be. Volunteers could have, would have and were willing to do much more
than they were allowed to do. People risk their lives to help others in
a disaster. And if gangs were so dangerous (and I believe they were)
perhaps their hearts would have been softened as they saw these regular
people coming in to help in droves.
(I know that many displaced people are being exposed to races they
aren't used to being around in a postiive way and I can only think it
will increase tolerance towards the races as we interact with one
another in this great time of need. In time of disaster there is no
color, there is no them/us. It is just "we" making it better for everyone.)
This disaster is not just Bush's. I do not believe it was racial
discrimination at the federal level. It may have been at the state
level out of fear for safety for the Red Cross from gangs. It was simple
ineptness at the city level. It exposed the mindset of welfare
recepients and how it is crippled in caring for its own by banding
together and helping one another and themselves in a good way.
Each of us has a responsibility in our homes, our neighborhoods, our
cities and our states to assure these disaster plans are in place.
Fight the growing hand-out mentality that we need the federal govt to do
everything for us. Let US be prepared as well as we can at every level
before asking for Federal aid. Each person unprepared and each
government entity that failed bears a part of this responsibility.
Let's not repeat the mistake.
Following is a reply to a man who was asking me what my definition of
salvation and to be born again are:
Well then Jim, welcome to the group and I hope you find what you are
looking for. I imagine it won't be long until the group "goes against
your beliefs" as in my reply to you. This just isn't a very orthodox
group.
To put succinctly what I believe re: salvation and being born again
will be a challenge.
Jesus the Christ is my exemplar. He asked that we follow him and do as
he did and even greater things than he did. All physical ordinances
only represent what should be going on in our minds and hearts. To go
through the motions of ordinances without a change of heart doesn't cut
it IMO. To continually beat ourselves up because we are not perfect
leading to lives of depression doesn't cut it either. (I was diagnosed
clinically depressed for over ten years so I know what I am talking
about when I say depressed).
The word savior now says to me save-your. Save yourself like
Jesus did. He said, Ye are Gods and now I believe it. As Gods we chose
to come here and experience earth life. We learn things, we grow, we
blow it, we learn, we grow etc etc. I do not believe our soul expects
us to learn everything in one lifetime. So while this personality who
is Susan is only born once, my soul has experienced many personalities
over the eons of time. My soul lets me in on some of the lessons
learned by these other personalities to help me with this go-round. The
goal seems to be for one of these personalities to be a Christ, too.
Jesus or better yet Joshua Ben Joseph became a Christed person and
mastered many things. I believe that is the sense of urgency that each
personality feels.
So on the one hand, I still feel this sense of getting it right,
accomplishing the goals my soul set out for me to learn in this
lifetime and to become Christed; yet on the other hand, there is peace
that if I don't get it all done today, there are as many chances to get
it right as needed. My personality, Susan, would prefer to be the one
Christed, but I am more aware of my soul and its goals and view of
things. To be born again is to have your eyes opened to your soul, to
be able to commune with your soul, to have a peace that no one else can
give or take away.
The soul of me sees the soul of everyone else and recognizes their soul
as well as their personality. Some personalities are still asleep to
their soul and are not to be trusted very much. Those that are still
awakening need more organized religions to keep their personalities
moving in the soul's direction. Once awakened there are many avenues
for service. For an awakened soul their life is one of service in some
form or another (again reflect on Joshua Ben Joseph's life). For some
that service is within the religion that helped them to awaken. For
others it is to find those who find religion distasteful for some
reason, but are seeking their soul.
The ideal religion is for the leaders to be soul-awakened people and
helping those in their care to awaken also. It seems that every
religion starts with one of those kinds of people and then devolves
into a bureacratic mess such as Jesus found within the Jewish religion
with the Pharisees and Sadducees. The Book of Mormon and Bible are
full of
examples of The Cycle of Apostacy. Yet even when the leaders are not
very awake, there is enough truth in the various religions to lead
people to their soul if they are truly seeking it. Every religion has
its scriptures and rituals. To study all other religions and find
those kernels of truth is a joy. Some prefer to stay within one
religion and find the truth that way. It is all good. It all leads us
to our souls.
Once you are awake to your soul, you do not need your religion anymore,
the goal has been reached, but your religion may need you.
Unfortunately, the more asleep the leaders are, the more they persecute
the awakened ones. (Again reflect on Jesus' life). So usually the
awakened ones are outcasts and are seen as having lost the faith. When
your authority is your soul it is threatening to those that only have
dead scriptures and lifeless rituals and bureacratic rule-making. (Did
Jesus upset the religious authorities with his unorthodox practices and
ways?)
Hope this wasn't too long, it is hard to put brieflly. I am very
grateful to the religion of my youth and for what it has led me to do
and be at this time in my life. I love Jesus
Christ and believe he is the ideal master to follow. I am grateful to
many other great ones who were awakened souls. Without their
enlightened teachings it would have taken me so much longer to awaken
as much as I have.
I am taking a class where it asks what is your purpose for this
life. I avoided the question for a week. It is not that I don't
have a purpose that I have been striving for nearly my entire life.
It is, at nearly fifty, that I fear I have failed...

Service has been on my mind a lot and here is a cool quote:
What Effect does Service have upon the Mind, the Emotions and the
Etheric Body?
It must be remembered that it is through its[service's] effects that
the scientist of the future will begin to deduce the effectual
existence of an inner cause, of an inner reality, or of a self or
soul. We have seen that service is not simply an activity of some
person or group doing something with good intention for another person
or group. Service itself is definitely the result of a tremendous
inner happening, and when that result is brought about, it will be
found to have produced a number of creative secondary causes. These
are, primarily, a change in the lower consciousness, a tendency to
turn away from the things of the personal self to the larger issues of
the group, a reorientation which is real and expressive and a power to
change conditions (through creative activity) which is the
demonstration of something dynamically new. As this inner event
stabilizes into an equilibrized inner condition, the demonstration of
the above changes becomes more regular and less spasmodic and the
effects of the new forces flowing into the personality, to be later
used creatively, will be seen in all three bodies. Thus the true
server comes into possession of his instruments for service, and
thenceforth creative work in accordance with the Plan can go forward
on all three planes. Thus has God, in His wisdom, chosen to [134]
limit Himself, and the work of evolution proceeds solely through the
medium of His chosen builders and under the direction - on this planet
- of those men whose lives are being transformed through soul contact
and creative service, and who constitute the planetary Hierarchy.
When alignment has been effected, when the at-one-ment has been more
constantly made, and when the antahkarana (the bridge connecting the
higher and the lower) is in definite process of construction, the true
nature of service, as practiced by any individual, begins to emerge.
The first effect of the inflowing force of the soul, which is the
major factor leading to demonstrated service, is to integrate the
personality, and to bring all the three lower aspects of the man into
one serving whole. This is a difficult and elementary stage from the
angle of the student in the Hall of Wisdom. The man becomes aware of
his power and capacity, and, having pledged himself to service, he
begins furiously to serve; he creates this, that and the other channel
for the expression of the force which is driving him; he tears down
and destroys just as fast as he creates. He temporarily becomes a
serious problem to the other servers with whom he may be associated,
for he sees no vision but his own, and the aura of criticism which
surrounds him and the strenuous push of the assertive force within him
produces the stumbling of the "little ones" and there has to be
constant repair work undertaken (on his behalf) by older, more
experienced disciples. [Note from Susan: so that explains what has
been wrong with me!!!! LOL!!!] He becomes the victim, for the time,
of his own aspiration to serve, and of the force which is flowing
through him. This stage will in some cases fan into flame the latent
seeds of ambition. This ambition is, in the last analysis, only the
personality urge towards betterment, and in its right place and time
is a divine asset, but it has to be rooted out when the personality
becomes the instrument of the soul. In other cases, the server [135]
will come into a wider and more loving vision, and, taking his eyes
off his own accomplishment, will go to work in silent unison with the
groups of all true servers. He will submerge his personality
tendencies, his ideas and his ambitions in the greater good of the
whole, and self will be lost to sight. Perhaps no better suggestion
can be made to the man or woman who seeks to function as a true server
than to ask them to repeat daily, with their whole hearts and minds
behind the words, the dedication at the conclusion of the Esoteric
Catechism, which is included at the end of Initiation, Human and
Solar. I would remind such servers that if they revolt or are dismayed
by the ideas embodied in the words, that is perhaps an indication of
how much they need the impression of this life objective upon their
consciousness. That pledge runs as follows:
"I play my part with stern resolve; with earnest aspiration; I
look above, I help below; I dream not, nor I rest; I toil; I serve; I
reap; I pray; I am the Cross; I am the Way; I tread upon the work I
do, I mount upon my slain self; I kill desire, and I strive,
forgetting all reward. I forego peace; I forfeit rest, and, in the
stress of pain, I lose myself and find Myself and enter into peace. To
all this I solemnly pledge myself, invoking my Higher Self."

Prayer for Peace
In this season of new beginnings blossoming all around us, in the new
thoughts and feeling worldwide, in people reaching out to others in
hopes of fulfilling mankind's destiny to create a planet of harmony
and goodwill, let us join together for peace. If we join hands,
voices and intentions we can do this! What we're asking of you is
three simple things that take but minutes and could make a huge impact
on the direction of the planet.
First, the crisis of 9-11-2001 has brought the danger of separateness
to the consciousness of humanity in the area of religion and belief
systems as never before. In our history almost every conflict has
been fueled by religious differences and a lack of tolerance leading
to war, persecution and devastation.
There exists a similarity of belief common to all religions more
pronounced today than ever before. Imagine what would happen if the
people of the world were to focus on the similarities of belief rather
than our differences. Please follow this link and if you feel aligned
to its mission add your name. http://www.unification911.org/default.htm
Second, please read thru the following invocation, contemplate the
meaning, contemplate the energy of thousands of others saying the same
words and invoking the same energies at the same time. If this feels
right, please say the invocation daily while envisioning the thousands
of other voices joining yours. On the full moon of May 23rd let us
especially join together in a prayer for peace.
Third, forward this message to as many people as you are able to in an
effort to create a spiritual vortex of love, light, and the will to
follow God's purpose for us all.
From the point of Light within the Mind of God
Let light stream forth into the minds of men.
Let Light descend on Earth.
From the point of Love within the Heart of God
Let love stream forth into the hearts of men.
May Christ return to Earth.
From the center where the Will of God is known
Let purpose guide the little wills of men -
The purpose which the Masters know and serve.
From the center which we call the race of men
Let the Plan of Love and Light work out
And may it seal the door where evil dwells.
Let Light and Love and Power restore the Plan on Earth
Scientists and researchers are discovering that prayer actually helps
heart patients recover faster from a heart attack even if they don't
know they are being prayed for. The heart of our entire world needs
healing and if thousands are praying for something specific on the day
of the May full moon May 23rd, we can make a real difference in our
world. If we do it daily we will heal it even more. Thank you.

FOREWORD
"Peter seeing him (John) saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this
man do?
Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is
that to thee? Follow thou me.
"Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple
should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but,
if I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee?"
John 21:21-23
John, the Beloved, the Revelator, an Apostle of Jesus, perhaps the
most mysterious man in history, comes alive in this book. Legend has
it that John never died and still roams the earth as a teacher.
The contents of this first book and additional books about The
Immortal may or may not be true. It is up to the reader to decide.
But whatever the opinion rendered, the story and teachings herein are
worthy of serious consideration.

BOOK I

CHAPTER ONE
Elizabeth
I have always wanted to be a writer, but never seemed to find the
time to carry out my dream. Ironically, this time in my life is the
most difficult of all to begin such a project as this, but it is
something I must do. I have a story to tell that is difficult to
believe so I am writing it as fiction. It is too unbelievable to
present as a true story. Nevertheless, I do maintain that the
principles taught herein are true and that many readers will have
this verified by their hearts and souls.
I'd like to start with John, but that probably wouldn't work. I must
tell you about Elizabeth and something about myself before you can
begin to understand.
There's not a lot to tell about me. I am average or below average in
a number of ways. If there is anything out of the ordinary about me
it's probably the fact that I am quite curious in nature. I have
thought quite a bit about why things are the way they are. I've
always asked myself a lot of unanswerable questions, like: Who or
what is God? Is there life after death? What will it be like? What is
the purpose of life? Questions - that seem to have no answers.
I met Elizabeth about ten years ago. I was 43 years old and Elizabeth
was several years younger. I was just getting my feet wet in real
estate after failing in several business ventures. Both Elizabeth and
I had been previously married. But since we got along great together
after experiencing difficult relationships with others we both felt
like we had finally mastered the art of marriage to the extent we
half-heartedly considered giving seminars on the subject.
Leaving my children with my previous wife was one of the most
difficult decisions of my life, but the situation was not one of
those win-win possibilities. It was lose-lose. The fact that I lost
so much in my relationship with my children and they lost in their
relationship with me made it all the more important to me that my
relationship with Elizabeth would somehow be worth the great
sacrifice.
Let's move on here. I know a lot of you have gone through difficult
marriages and wish you could have your life with your children to
live over again. But there is something else I also know. I know that
all of you have the desire within your hearts to meet the love of
your life and to fall in love and stay in love. I know that few of
you have found the quality of love you are looking for.
Well, this is one area where my life was not exactly average. I found
the love of my life. I found even more than I was looking for. I
found Elizabeth.
After my divorce I starting teaching several classes in the local
community adult education programs. It had long been a hobby of mine
to study graphology, or how character is revealed through
handwriting. Then, after years of dabbling, I became pretty good at
it so I volunteered my services.
I thank God every day that I studied handwriting analysis because
without it I may not have recognized Elizabeth.
At the end of my first class I had everyone in the class hand in
samples of his or her handwriting. Then I proceeded to demonstrate
that I was truly accurate by analyzing each of them. Now, this has
nothing to do with psychic powers. Instead, it is an analytical way
of discerning character.
There were about twenty in the class and I thought that I had
analyzed everyone when Elizabeth stood up.
"You haven't analyzed me yet," she said.
"I'm sorry," I said. "Did you hand in a sample?"
"Yes, I did."
I picked up the pile of samples and handed them to her and said: "See
if yours is one of these."
She looked through them. "Here it is," she said, handing it to
me. "It seemed to have been stuck to another sample."
I looked at the handwriting. I did a double take. Through the years I
had not only formulated an image of what I was looking for in the
ideal mate, but I had also formulated what my ideal mate's
handwriting should look like. After many years and thousands of
handwriting samples I finally found one that looked like the image I
had conjectured.
I probably embarrassed Elizabeth when I blurted out her qualities.
Her handwriting showed that she was very intelligent, passionate:
objective, yet caring; focused, yet curious; loving, yet having good
common sense.
After telling her about a dozen positive characteristics I put the
sample down and took a good look at her. The first thing I noticed
was her very attractive almost sparkling face with darting
intelligent eyes that seemed to focus with great attention from time
to time. There was an honesty in her eyes that revealed her mood at
the moment. I have since come to call them smiling eyes because when
she is happy the sparkle in her eyes makes her feelings so obvious.
Physically she was about 5'3", light brown hair, great figure and
with looks enough to generate an attractive pull in any male.
I somehow felt deep within myself that I would marry her. I tried to
momentarily dismiss the feeling, but it stayed with me throughout the
week. Then, after the next class, I accosted her and asked her to
join me for coffee and the rest is history.
I could easily write a book about our relationship and how it
developed, but that is not the grand purpose of this book, as you
will soon see. What you need to understand at this time is that we
fell as much in love as is possible for us mortals to do. Think of
your favorite love story and multiply the emotions times ten and that
was us. I felt fulfilled and secure for the first time in my life. It
seemed that nothing could go wrong.
Until that fateful day...
I remember the day very clearly. I was in the family room reading a
book and Elizabeth was fixing us an evening cup of coffee. The moment
came as she was walking down the stairs, bringing my cup to me just
as she did each evening.
But this time she fell down the stairs, knocking herself into a semi
conscious state.
I ran to her, holding her as she revived and lifted her up.
"I can't stand up." she said.
"Sure you can, sweetheart. You just had a bad fall. Just rest a
minute."
She rested a while, but still could not stand.
I rushed her to the emergency room. The doctor told me that they
needed to run some tests.
Finally, after three weeks of testing, we discovered the problem. She
had multiple sclerosis. My heart sunk as I asked the doctor how
serious it was and how long she had to live.
"It varies with each person," he said. "Some go quickly, other hang
on for years. I must warn you, however, it appears that the disease
is progressing quickly with your wife. I would guess that she has
somewhere around a year or two to live. You never know, though. She
could linger on for ten years or more, but you must prepare yourself
for the worst.
"Right now she can't even walk. She may get some of her strength
back, but then will probably lose it again. It's like moving one step
forward and two steps back. Sooner or later the disease gets you.
"The problem now is with her legs, but later it will be other parts
of her body. Near the end she'll probably lose her sight, and even
her ability to speak and feed herself. I hope you love her a lot
because she's going to be very dependent on you."
"I'll be there for her," I said with tears in my eyes. "We'll do
whatever it takes. Somehow we'll beat it."
"Just be prepared to deal with it. Don't get your hopes too high. It
can be frustrating for both of you. Just be thankful that you have a
year or two of sharing left. Many people I deal with have their loved
ones taken suddenly and wish they could just have five minutes with
them to say good-bye. You have time for a long loving good-bye. I
would advise you to make the most of it."
"I appreciate the advice doctor, but don't take our hope away. There
has to be a way to beat this."
"I understand your feelings," he said patiently. "But my experience
tells me that I must do what I can to prepare you for the real world."
"I see your point," I said, "but I refuse to give up hope no matter
what the odds are. I've always believed that all things are possible.
"I'm here to help however I can," the doctor said quietly.
The next year was rather discouraging. The doctor was proven to be
entirely correct. Elizabeth got one step better and two steps worse.
She got some strength back in her legs but later lost all strength in
her legs plus some of her vision. During that year we tried every
medicine, every health food, every herb that had any chance of
working, but her health seemed unrelated to anything that we tried.
She finally reached a point where she was confined to a wheelchair
and was barely able to feed herself because of her shaking limbs.
Fortunately, she still had her mental capacities, but the doctor
warned me that even that could go next. At this point he told me that
she seemed to be deteriorating and could go fairly quickly. She could
go in six months or possibly linger on for years.
One night, as we lay in bed together and I held her in my arms, I
thought of the years we spent together. In my mind's eye I visualized
her being vibrant as she was when we first met and as she is now. I
felt very sad. Why did this have to happen to the most wonderful
woman I have ever met?
As I contemplated the situation I said a prayer from deep within my
heart.
"Why God does something like this happen to such a wonderful person
as my wife? You would think you'd have to be a serial killer to
deserve such punishment, but Elizabeth has never hurt anyone. Maybe
some very minor things, but nothing to deserve such pain. If this is
a punishment it seems unjust and out of proportion.
"Even ministers these days are saying that life is unfair. If You are
truly God, then one of Your main attributes should be fairness and
justice. Where is fairness and justice in this situation? I ask not
for myself, but for the woman I love. Surely there is an answer
somewhere, somehow, someplace..."
This was a sort of basic prayer I thought within my heart several
times daily ever since Elizabeth became ill. However, on this
particular night I said it with great emotion and cried myself to
sleep with my thoughts.
That night I fell into a very sound, profound yet peaceful sleep.
Then in the morning something quite unusual happened. I was at that
point where you are between being asleep and awake. I know there have
been several times when I have been at this stage that I was not sure
if I was dreaming or not. This was one of those times.
This was the first time I heard the bells; gentle, penetrating,
familiar, soft, yet very real bells.
At the time I heard them I was sure I was hearing real bells, perhaps
ringing somewhere outside my bedroom window, but then I roused myself
and rose up in my bed and the sound disappeared. I was not sure if I
really heard them or if I was dreaming. Then I settled back into
sleep and I heard the bells again. I roused myself and the sound
again went silent. Then this process was repeated for a third time.
One experience like this I could have shrugged off, but a three-time
repetition got me thinking that there was some significance here.
Then the next morning I heard the bells again.
And again the next morning.
Finally, I felt I had to mention it to Elizabeth. I told her the
story and she said, "The only thing I can suggest is that it must be
some type of message or sign intended just for you. I was sleeping
next to you each of these past three mornings and I heard no bells."
"But if it is some type of message intended just for me, what good is
it? I've thought and thought about it and I can't see any hidden
meaning in bells ringing."
"Have you heard bells in real life that sound anything like these?"
she asked.
"Well, they sound something like Christmas bells and they seem very
familiar. Christmas is just a few weeks away. Could it have something
to do with that?"
"Who knows?" she shrugged. "Maybe you're just thinking too much about
Christmas. How about taking your mind off the bells by doing some
grocery shopping for me. Get a pen and I'll give you the list"
CHAPTER TWO
The Mystery of the Bells
Since Elizabeth became ill I did most of our shopping and must admit
I got pretty good at it. I clipped coupons, checked for sales,
compared store brands with national brands and much more. I got to
the point where I somewhat enjoyed shopping and would probably still
do most of it even if Elizabeth was healed.
As I drove up to Albertsons supermarket at 16th and State Street in
our fair city of Boise, Idaho I noticed for the first time that
Christmas decorations were up and Christmas trees were for sale. I
wasn't sure if decorations were just put up or if this was the first
time I had noticed. It seemed like Thanksgiving had just ended and it
was too early to even think about Christmas. I felt a little like
Scrooge as I got out of my car thinking about all the presents I had
to buy compared to how few I would receive. I remember thinking as I
entered the building how it would be a lot better if Christmas came
once every five years...
Then, as I opened the door, all thoughts left me... I heard the
bells! They were the same bells I heard in my quasi sleep, but this
time I was sure that I was awake and the bells were real. I retreated
back out the door and turned around. To my surprise I saw a bell
ringer for the Salvation Army!
I was amazed that I did not connect the bells I heard in my sleep
with those of the bell ringers. Somehow I did not remember them
sounding like the bells I heard in front of me. The sound of these
bells seemed to be so pure, sweet and almost holy. Perhaps I had just
never listened to them before.
The bell ringer was a good-looking older man around sixty, clean
shaven with dark hair and simply dressed. Some of the bell ringers
look like they could have been taken from a homeless shelter, but
this one did not give that impression. He was a far cry from any
executive look but also gave the impression that he would never be
down and out. If I were to guess his vocation by his looks I would
guess that he was a high school teacher or maybe even a real estate
salesman like myself.
After looking his direction for about thirty seconds he caught my eye
and said: "Merry Christmas."
"Merry Christmas," I said as I retreated back into the store in a
state of bewilderment.
As I went through my wife's shopping list I tried to find meaning in
it all.
I heard bells on my awakening three days in a row and now I heard the
same bells here at the grocery store by a Salvation Army bell ringer.
At the time I heard the bells I was thinking like Scrooge about
Christmas. Maybe I was being taught some supernatural lesson like in
the movie. Perhaps I was being told that I should donate to the poor.
Financially, I was feeling like one of the poor myself, for I had
gone heavily into debt and had no extra money because of Elizabeth's
illness. Nevertheless, perhaps I was supposed to take my mind off my
own concerns and think of others who have problems.
By the time I had finished shopping, I had decided to give the bell
ringer a donation on the way out. It wasn't much, but maybe it was
what I was supposed to do.
As I passed by the pot I dropped in a five dollar bill. The bell
ringer looked me in the eye and said: "Thanks. Have a Merry
Christmas."
There was something about the look in his eyes that disturbed me. He
seemed to have large eyes with large pupils and the look about him
reinforced the idea of a teacher in my mind. There was something
about his look that made me feel that he knew things that I did not.
I had never felt that way about a stranger before, but that is how I
felt about this man.
I got in the car and started driving home and passed another store
that appeared to have a bell ringer. I parked again and walked toward
the bells and stopped in front of the man. I was stunned. These bells
sounded similar, but not exactly like the first bell ringer or those
heard in my dream state.
This piqued my curiosity, so for the next couple of hours I drove all
over town and visited every bell ringer I could find. Each one of
them sounded similar to the second bell ringer. Only the first bell
ringer created a sound like the bells that I remember hearing in my
sleep. Then I began to wonder if my mind was playing tricks on me.
Maybe I just thought those first bells were like those in my dream
state.
Elizabeth was upset that I was gone so long shopping and was worried
about me. She quickly calmed down as I explained to her what
happened. I ended with, "Maybe it was just my imagination that the
first bell ringer sounded like the ones that I heard on waking."
"And maybe it isn't," she said. "Maybe it is a sign of some kind.
Perhaps you were just supposed to remember the spirit of Christmas
and give what you can afford and that's all there is to it."
"Maybe," I said, not convinced she was right.
I felt unsettled about any explanation we could arrive at about the
bells. The next morning, as I lie between wakefulness and sleep, I
became even more unsettled as I heard the bells again. This time I
heard them resonate for a few seconds after I was fully awake. I knew
now that the bells were not from my imagination. I also knew that the
message of the bells was not resolved.
After I shared this with Elizabeth she said: "Your guess that you are
supposed to have a more giving spirit may be correct. The last time
you gave five dollars. That's probably about all we have given to the
poor all year. Think about it. That's not much of a donation. I know
we don't have much money, but we can do better than that."
"You're right," I said. "This time I will give fifty dollars. That's
about all we can afford, but we can give that much."
I took off again to Albertsons at 16th Street and approached the bell
ringer again. Again I heard the beautiful sound. They were definitely
the same sound that I heard on waking. As I started to appreciate
their beauty I felt my whole body and soul was resonating to the
vibration of the bells. Somehow they made me feel whole, peaceful,
strong, connected... It's difficult to give you the picture, but the
effect was definite and strong. I put two twenties and a ten in the
pot, looked at the bell ringer and said: "Merry Christmas."
"Your gift is greatly appreciated," said the bell ringer.
I started walking backward, catching the eye of the bell ringer for a
few seconds before we disconnected. Again I felt unsettled as I drove
home.
After I got home I told Elizabeth: "Giving the fifty dollars was a
good thing to do, but I don't think it was the answer. Suppose that
the answer has nothing to do with the bells, Christmas, the spirit of
giving, but something else?"
"What else could it be?" she asked.
"Maybe it's got something to do with the man - the bell ringer."
"You said you felt he was different?"
"Yes. He was different...Maybe he knows something."
"If you hear the bells again then maybe you should check him out,"
she said.
In the land of Sava, many years ago, there lived a people called the Jalas who were often paralyzed by their enemies. They could not seem to ever be the masters of their destinies because of their powerlessness, and lived in fear daily.
Legends existed among the people of Jala that there would one day come among them a powerful man who would fight these enemies for them so they would no longer be subject to those who abused them at will. This man, they thought, would be superhuman and enthroned king of the region so all their enemies would have to bow before him.
After a long wait for deliverance, many began to lose faith in the appearance of such a man; but then one day, almost unnoticed, a fairly ordinary looking man walked into town. Outside of being a little taller than average, and a little thinner than most, there was nothing unusual about this person. Even his dress was very simple, certainly not giving the appearance of potential royalty, and his slight frame gave no evidence to one with the super strength of a conqueror.
The man stayed for several days before he first drew attention at the town square, where there was an image of the god of the region who was Elume. This image was etched of fine gold and silver and it was believed that the spirit of Elume dwelt within the image and had power to grant the answers to all petitions. To petition Elume, one had to pass through a gate and kiss the feet of the image. Now the people of Sava were forbidden by law to pass through this gate, and if any should do so, and kiss the feet of the image of Elume, such a one should be killed.
There was one called Patro who greatly desired to overthrow his enemies and felt that if he could kiss the feet of the image, he would be granted his wish for the destruction of his oppressors and gain freedom for his people.
As the stranger watched on, Patro crashed through the gate and approached the image, but before he could kiss its feet and make his wish, he was subdued by the guards who began to drag him away to his execution. As they dragged Patro by, the stranger stood, stretched out his hand and said: "Stop!"
The guards paused, smiled with amusement and attempted to continue, but the stranger said in a still louder voice: "Stop!"
This time it seemed that some invisible force stopped the guards, and they dropped Patro. They were beside themselves and attempted to grab Patro again, but a third time the stranger commanded: "Stop!" and they were thrown back and unable to touch him.
At this the guards were very angry and rushed at the stranger to do him harm. Again he stretched out his arm and said: "Stop!"
At this command the guards were thrown back with strong force and were filled with fear and ran away. Patro was so thankful that he approached the stranger to kiss his feet, but the stranger said "No! You shall not kiss my feet neither shall you kiss the feet of dead Gods. Follow me and you shall stand on your own feet and have power over your enemies."
"Who are you and what is your name?" said Patro.
"My name is Jeros, Master of the Cala," he said.
"What is the Cala?" asked Patro.
Jeros paused a moment: "The Cala is the same power that the people ascribe to the false god Elume. The power that they believe resides in the image of gold and silver, resides instead in the human heart. I have found Cala and have learned to manifest it in the world of men."
"Will you teach me about this Cala?" asked Patro.
"Yes, I will," said Jeros. "Gather your friends and bring them to me three days hence, and you too can be masters of Cala."
Patro excitedly went to his friends and family and told them about Jeros. Some believed his story and some did not, but he did manage to gather a band of believing men and women to meet with Jeros on the third day. They met in a secret place and sat at the feet of Jeros and listened.
"What I do with the Cala all can do. The Cala is for protection only.
"When an enemy comes at you seeking to do harm the Cala reverses his energy back upon himself. Thus if one seeks to do you harm, the only one he harms is himself. You are not to use the Cala to initiate harm, or control; or he, Cala, will retreat to the secret place within yourself and be as if it is not."
As he spoke, the authorities came into the meeting to arrest him, but as they approached Jeros, he raised both hands outstretched towards them. Suddenly all the energy that was expended in pressing toward Jeros was pushed back against them; and the authorities were pushed back and fell to the ground. They rose and rushed at Jeros a second time, and again they were pushed back by an invisible force and fell to the earth. This time they were filled with fear and ran away.
The students were filled with awe at this demonstration and Patro rose up and proclaimed: "My friends! Hail to Jeros, Master of the Cala, the power of the gods."
"Hail to Jeros, the Cala Master!" returned the crowd.
Jeros rose up and said: "You do not understand. I did not come here to be your master, but to teach you to be Masters of the Cala yourselves."
"But you use the Cala in a way that we never can," said one. "In all our history no one has ever done a miracle such as you have just demonstrated."
Jeros groaned within himself and replied: "Believe on my words and greater powers will you have than that which you have seen me manifest, for as the Cala is in me, so will it be realized in you."
As he spoke, a young boy approached and said: "Master. Many men are coming! They have sent an army of the strongest men to apprehend you. Not even you can resist hem. We must flee!"
"No," said Jeros. "We shall not flee. But here is an opportunity for you to use the Cala yourself and apply that which I taught you, but you must not fear."
The students tried to apply the teaching of Jeros, but as the soldiers approached, they began to fear, and they struck down the first students in their path. When the others saw the first were vulnerable, they feared all the more and lost all contact with the Cala.
When they approached Jeros, he stood and stretched out his hand again and every single soldier fell back with great force. Again this was repeated a second time and the soldiers all quickly retreated with fear in their hearts. At this great miracle the people thought with one accord within themselves that surely this man was a Master of Cala in a way that none before or after will ever be.
Jeros perceived their thoughts and said, "The time is not at hand to establish the Cala among you in fullness. I will stay for a short time and teach a few of you what you are ready to learn, and then I must go to other lands and give others the opportunity that I have given you."
Jeros therefore stayed a short while and taught them what they were ready to learn and parted with this statement: "I must go away and visit other students, but keep my teachings in your hearts and seek to become as I am.
"In the future I will return and teach again. It is my hope that you will learn to master the Cala in my absence so our union will be one of joy."
At this Jeros went to a far country and many felt he was never to be seen again.
The students gathered together in his absence and wrote down a prime directive of belief which read:
"The great Jeros dwelt with us and used the Cala in a way that has never been seen among men, nor has been seen since. We therefore declare Jeros to be the One, the one and only true Master of the Cala. It is therefore blasphemy for any of us to consider that we may be a Master, as is Jeros, and if one so claims to be such a Master, this wicked one will be scourged and executed.
Hail to the one true Master of Cala."
The followers, though, did gain confidence in their own power, thinking Jeros was with them, and overthrew their enemies and tore down the image of Elume. After this they melted down the gold and silver and cast a new image after their remembrance of Jeros, and did bow down and kiss the feet of this image, and did make petitions to the image of Jeros as the people previously did to Elume.
Now there were several which diligently listened to Jeros and did remember his teachings accurately. Patro and several others wrote them down and secretly passed them around. But when the caretakers of the image discovered this, they sought out these followers and had them killed and attempted to destroy all the writings. No matter how hard the new authorities tried to eliminate the true students and writings, they always seemed to surface again and it seemed that a true seeker could always find the real teachings of Jeros. This situation continued for many years until the time approached for Jeros to return to the land of Sava.
He entered the land under cover of darkness at midnight, walked again into the town square and looked at the image of himself where the false God Elume once stood. Jeros wept for a moment and then stood and said:
"Wherever the seeds of the Cala are cast, true followers will manifest. Where are you?"
At that Jeros tuned in to the Cala within him and perceived that true students were indeed in the land and that he would seek them out. But he thought that he would disguise himself and go about the in the land and teach the principle of Cala. Alas, if he presented himself as the mighty Master many were expecting, even the hardest of hearts would believe. Instead he sought to gather those who could perceive the pure vibration of the Cala.
He thus went about in disguise, which was easy for him to do as he was much older now, and the people's memories were fuzzy as to his true appearance. He went to the wilderness areas and found true seekers of the Cala who had been cast off by the authorities. As he gathered them around himself, many began to fear of being found out and persecuted or killed.
Jeros said: "When I was here last time I demonstrated the power of Cala and having done so you thought I was unique and different from yourselves. But, my beloved ones, we are all brethren and what one can do, all can do. This time you must learn to use the Cala for yourselves. Thus we will continue to gather and when the authorities come you will follow my words and use the power yourselves.
The disciples continued to study and learn until they attracted the attention of the authorities and, as they were having a meeting, officers came to arrest them. The students looked to Jeros for protection, but then he looked back and said: "Do not look to my form, find the Cala within."
The disciples were nervous, but they held steady and quieted their fears and found the Cala as the officers approached. A disciple stood up, raised his hand and by the power of the Cala he reversed the aggressive energy of the officers. As before the officers fell back. They rushed again and fell back again. At this the chief officer bowed down before the disciple and said: "Surely you are Jeros come again."
The disciple replied: "Jeros has come again, but I am not he, but I have found the Cala."
The officers then went back to the authorities who became very distraught at hearing this and sent a division of the army to subdue the group. This time twenty-four students stood up and repelled the army with great power.
Each time they attempted to attack, an invisible force came back at them. Each time they fired a weapon, the weapon injured one of their own. After a time the army retreated back to the authorities to report their defeat and testified to them of the power of Cala which was now manifest.
The authorities acknowledged that the group definitely had some power from somewhere, obviously some evil entity who is an enemy of the true Jeros. They then sent a petition to peacefully meet with the leader of the group. When Jeros received this he said: "Now is the time for me to play my part."
The authorities came and said to the group: "Some think that Jeros has come again. Tell us where he is so we can worship him."
Jeros stood up and said: "I do not want your worship. If you wish to worship, worship the One God."
The lead authority stepped forward: "If you are truly Jeros show us a sign."
"Only a self deceived and unfaithful disciple is guided by outward signs. Even if I did give you a sign you would not believe, for you do not wish to believe I have returned."
The lead authority approached closer and said: "Without a sign how can we know you are he, for you are much older than the image we remember."
"The only true sign is the Cala within," Jeros replied.
This very much angered the lead authority and he took out a secret knife and attempted to thrust it into Jeros; but as he did the energy reversed and he stabbed himself in the leg. As the authority lay screaming on the ground, his associates were filled with fear and they attempted to worship Jeros. Jeros stopped them and said: "Your worship has no meaning. I am no more to you than the lifeless image in the town square. Go your way and bother these, my friends, no more, for what you do unto them shall be done to you."
At that the authorities retreated but, because of pride, could not bring themselves to tell their people that they had discovered Jeros. Instead they found that he, who they thought they had loved all these years, was really one who they hated. And they spent the rest of their years in frustration seeking how they might destroy that which they thought they worshipped.
But those who found the true Cala grew in numbers until they filled the whole land, for none could cause them fear or create harm. It was not long before the authorities seemed to vanish and every single inhabitant seemed to acknowledge the Cala within and gladness, happiness and joy were in the hearts of all.
JJ Dewey gave a seminar in June and this is from the transcript:
DK makes an interesting statement which is important for people along the path. He says when a person goes along the path he pretty much leaves religion behind and governs himself. The tendency of many would be initiates governing themselves is they tend to go a little crazy for awhile because they don't have anyone telling them what to do so they do what they want. Oftentimes they indulge themselves too much. The advice DK gives is the true initiate will never lower the standard of the humanity of which he is a part. He will always seek to raise the standard and not lower it. I've seen many people in my life become interested in the spiritual path. Many of them start lowering their sights when they enter the spiritual path. They think they can have a free for all, love fest sort of thing or share other people's wives, get into drugs etc. They come up with all sorts of ideas that actually lower the standards rather than raising the standards up. This is a process a lot of people go through. It's a little like a kid who is raised by strict parents then goes off to college. Oftentimes the kid will go crazy and parties and drinks every night and makes up for lost time.
Audience: JJ, I have a bit of trouble with the standards thing. Being a former LDS I had strict standards I was expected to live by and I was immune. You say keep the standards high and my voice in my head is saying every time I take a drink of wine or wear sleeveless clothes or do things like that I have lowered my standards. My mother quite often tells me it's an LDS thing.
JJ: You have to look at what's really a standard of spiritual living. Wearing sleeveless clothes is not a lowering of any spiritual standard. They might think it is but what is a true spiritual standard and what the churches think is a spiritual standard are often two different things.
Audience: So how do you determine that?
JJ: By the principle of harmfulness. If you're creating harm, then you're lowering the standard. If you are doing something harmless, like drinking a glass of wine a day, then you need not concern yourself. Research has shown that wine is actually beneficial to your heart, so how is that hurting anyone? If you're wearing attractive clothes, how does that hurt anyone? It doesn't but if you see you neighbor's wife and say, "I want her and if we do it in secret it's not going to hurt anybody." Then you are creating harm because you're diverting her attention away from her spouse. In this way you are lowering the standard. But many people, like aspirants, might think anything goes as long as nobody knows about it. They might think no one will get hurt, and many times they do some very harmful things. For instance, I talked to a guy who organized a spiritual group one time. He was an older guy, but had done this when he was younger. He said the group was really great.
They had soul contact and everyone had a really good feeling about it. Then they started sharing each other's wives. He said it just exploded and everyone hated each other by the time it was over. No one thought this was harmful at all yet it did create harm. That's an important principle like DK says. It's sort of an obvious thing that isn't obvious to a lot of people. He says that the true disciple does not lower the standards of humanity. He will support the good standards that they have and seek to raise them higher.

From Bethlehem to Calvary - Chapter One - Introductory Remarks on Initiation
CHAPTER ONE
Introductory Remarks on Initiation
KEY THOUGHT
"There is a human desire for God; but there is also a Divine desire for man. God is the supreme idea, the supreme concern and the supreme desire of man. Man is the supreme idea, the supreme concern and the supreme desire of God. The problem of God is a human problem. The problem of man is a Divine problem... Man is the counterpart of God and His beloved from whom He expects the return of love. Man is the other person of the Divine mystery. God needs man. It is God's will not only that He should Himself exist, but man also, the Lover and beloved."
- Wrestlers with Christ, by Karl Pfleger, p. 236. [3]
I.
We are in process of passing from one religious age into another. The spiritual trends of today are steadily becoming more defined. The hearts of men have never been more open to spiritual impression than they are at this time, and the door into the very center of reality stands wide open. Paralleling, however, this significant development is a trend in the counter direction, and materialistic philosophies and doctrines of negation are becoming increasingly prevalent. To many, the whole question of the validity of the Christian religion remains to be determined. Claims are made that Christianity has failed and that man does not need the Gospel story with its implications of divinity and its urge to service and sacrifice.
Is the Gospel story historically true? Is it a mystical tale of great beauty and of real teaching value but nevertheless of no vital import to the intelligent men and women of today, who pride themselves on their reasoning powers and upon their independence of ancient mental trammels and of old and dusty traditions? As to the perfection of the portrayed character of Christ there is never any question. The enemies of Christianity admit His uniqueness, His basic profundity and His understanding of the hearts of men. They recognize the intelligence of His ideas and sponsor them in their own philosophies. The developments which the Carpenter of Nazareth brought about in the fabric of human life, His social and economic ideals, and the beauty of the civilization which could be founded upon the ethical teaching of the [4] Sermon on the Mount are frequently emphasized by many who refuse to recognize His mission as an expression of divinity. From the rational point of view, the question as to the historical accuracy of His story remains as yet unsolved, though His teaching upon the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man is endorsed by the best minds of the race. Those who can move in the world of ideas, of faith and of living experience testify to His divinity and to the fact that He can be approached. But such testimony is often passed over lightly as being mystical, futile and incapable of proof. Individual belief is, after all, of no value to anyone except to the believer himself, or as it tends to increase testimony until the total assumes such proportions that it eventually becomes proof. To fall back upon the "way of belief" can be indicative of a living experience, but it can also be a form of self-hypnotism and a "way of escape" from the difficulties and problems of daily life. The effort to understand, to experiment, to experience and to express what is known and believed is frequently too difficult for the majority, and they then fall back upon a belief which is based upon the testimony of the trusted, as the easiest way out of the impasse.
The problem of religion and the problem of orthodox Christianity are not one and the same thing. Much that we see around us today of unbelief and criticism, and the negation of our so-called truths, is based upon the fact that religion has been largely superseded by creed, and doctrine has taken the place of living experience. It is this living experience which is the keynote of this book.
Perhaps another reason why humanity at this time believes so little, or questions so unhappily what is believed, may be the fact that theologians have attempted to lift Christianity out of its place in the scheme of things and have overlooked its position in the great continuity of divine revelation. They have endeavored to emphasize its uniqueness, and to regard it as an isolated and entirely separated expression of spiritual religion. They thereby destroy its background, remove its foundations, and make it difficult for the steadily developing [5] mind of man to accept its presentation. Yet St. Augustine tells us that "that which is called the Christian religion existed among the ancients, and never did not exist from the beginning of the human race until Christ came in the flesh, at which time the true religion, which already existed, began to be called Christianity." (Quoted by W. Kingsland in Religion in the Light of Theosophy) The Wisdom which expresses relationship to God, the rules of the road which guide our wandering footsteps back to the Father's home, and the teaching which brings revelation have ever been the same, down the ages, and are identical with that which Christ taught. This body of inner truths and this wealth of divine knowledge have existed since time immemorial. It is the truth which Christ revealed; but He did more than this. He revealed in Himself and through His life history what this wisdom and knowledge could do for man. He demonstrated in Himself the full expression of divinity, and then enjoined upon His disciples that they should go and do likewise.
Even though this lady is residing in MY house, she may at some time appear in yours. Be alert! A very weird thing has happened. A strange old lady has moved into house. I have no idea who she is, where she came from, or how she got in. I certainly did not invite her. All I know is that one day she wasn't there, and the next day she was! She is a clever old lady and manages to keep out of sight for most part, but whenever I pass a mirror, I catch a glimpse of her. And, whenever I look in the mirror to check my appearance, there she is hogging the whole thing, completely obliterating my gorgeous face and body. This is very rude! I have tried screaming at her, but she just screams back. The least she could do is offer to pay part of the rent, but no. Every once in a while, I find a dollar bill stuck in a! coat pocket, or some loose change under a sofa cushion, but it is not nearly enough. I don't want to jump to conclusions, but I think she is stealing money from me. I go to the ATM and withdraw $100, and a few days later, it's all gone! I certainly don't spend money THAT fast, so I can only conclude the old lady is pilfering from me. You'd think she would spend some of that money to buy wrinkle cream. And money isn't the only thing I think she is stealing. Food seems to disappear at an alarming rate--especially the good stuff like ice cream, cookies, and candy. She must have a real sweet tooth, but she'd better watch it, because she is really packing on the pounds. I suspect she realizes this, and to make herself feel better, she is tampering with my scale make me think I am putting on weight, too. For an old lady, she is quite childish. She likes to play nasty games, like going into my closets when I'm not home and altering my clothes so they don't fit. And she messes with my files and papers so I can't find anything. This is particularly annoying since I am extremely neat and organized. She has found other imaginative ways to annoy me. She gets into my mail, newspapers, and magazines before I do and blurs the print so I can't read it. And she has done something really sinister to the volume controls on my TV, radio, and telephone. Now, all I hear are mumbles and whispers. She has done other things--like make my stairs steeper, my vacuum cleaner heavier and all my knobs and faucets harder to turn. She even made my bed higher so that getting into and out of it is a real challenge. Lately, she has been fooling with my groceries before I put them away, applying glue to the lids, making it almost impossible for me to open the jars. She has taken the fun out of shopping for clothes. When I try something on, she stands in front of the dressing room mirror and monopolizes it. She looks totally ridiculous in some of those outfits, plus, she keeps me from seeing how great they look on me. Just when I thought she couldn't get any meaner, she proved me wrong. She came along when I went to get my picture taken for my driver's license, and just as the camera shutter clicked, she jumped in front of me! I hope she never finds out where YOU live!
For list members only, he is posting the Third book in his series, The Immortal about a fictionalized account of John the Beloved visiting him. Today's installment Chapter 23 is a fascinating story including the reasons why so many doomsday prophecies may not be so accurate. It is a fascinating read and I would encourage anyone interested in this subject to join the list and read at least this Chapter. Book 1 is also free on the web right now with Book 2 the only one you need to purchase to get the story so far.
I found his reasoning on the probabilities of prophecies coming to pass a very accurate one. It really rang true to me and aligned with things I had been told before. He also has several other books free online that you can find at www.thenewagesite.com or www.freeread.com
What does it mean to live a spiritual life? Who can teach me the core principles of spirituality? Strangely enough my own body can teach me everything I need to know. The cells of my body are already doing what I want to learn. My body does everything better, with more passion and commitment than me. The cells in my body have no problem fully participating in life. A hundred thousand billion of them signed on to the same silent agreement, which can be described through qualities that the most spiritual person would envy-but the most practical person would envy them at the same time. These shared qualities speak eloquently for what a cell agrees not to do as much as for what it does.
Higher Purpose: A cell agrees to work for the welfare of the whole body first and its individual welfare second. If necessary it will die to protect the body-the lifetime of any given cell is a fraction of our own lifetime. Skin cells perish by the thousands every hour, as do immune cells fighting off invading microbes. Selfishness is not an option, even when it comes down to a cell's survival.
Communion: A cell keeps in touch with every other cell. Messenger molecules race everywhere to notify the farthest outposts of any desire or intention, however slight. Withdrawing or refusing to communicate is not an option.
Awareness: Cells adapt from moment to moment. They remain flexible in order to respond to immediate situations. Getting caught up in rigid habits is not an option.
Acceptance: Cells recognize each other as equally important. Every function in the body is interdependent with every other. Going it alone is not an option.
Creativity: Although every cell has a set of unique functions (liver cells, for example, can perform fifty separate functions), these combine in creative ways. A person can digest food never eaten before, think thoughts never thought before, dance in a way never seen before. Clinging to old behavior is not an option.
Being: Cells obey the universal cycle of rest and activity. Although this cycle expresses itself in many ways such as fluctuating hormone levels, blood pressures, and digestive rhythms, the most obvious expression is sleep. Why we need to sleep remains a medical mystery, yet complete dysfunction develops if we don't. In the silence of inactivity the future of the body is incubating. Being obsessively active is not an option.
Efficiency: Cells function with the least expenditure of energy. Typically a cell only stores three seconds of food and oxygen inside the cell wall. It trusts totally on being provided for. Excessive consumption of food, air, or water is not an option, and neither is hoarding.
Bonding: Due to their common genetic inheritance, cells know that they are fundamentally the same. The fact that liver cells are different from heart cells, and muscle cells different from brain cells does not negate their common identity, which is unchanging. In the laboratory a muscle cell can be genetically transformed into a heart cell by going back to their common source. Cells remain tied to their source no matter how many times they divide. Being an outcast is not an option.
Giving: The primary activity of cells is giving, which, maintains the integrity of all other cells. Total commitment to giving makes receiving automatic-it is the other half of a natural cycle. Hoarding is not an option.
Immortality: Cells reproduce in order to pass on their knowledge, experience, and talents, withholding nothing from their offspring. This is a kind of practical immortality, submitting to death on the physical plane but defeating it on the non-physical. The generation gap is not an option.
When I look at what my cells have agreed to, isn't it a spiritual pact in every sense of the word? Other labels work just as well for any of these qualities. The first, higher purpose, could be changed to surrender or selflessness. Awareness includes both alertness and adaptability. But my body is unconcerned with labels. To it, these qualities are woven into everyday existence. They are the result of life's inner intelligence evolving over billions of years as biology. If you examine the structure of a single cell, nothing like surrender, awareness, or communion would be evident. These qualities aren't present in single-celled organisms like bacteria, yeasts, and amoebas. The mystery of life was patient and careful in allowing its full potential to emerge. Single-celled creatures continue to thrive- thousands live in your intestines, which could not digest food without them. Evolution moves forward, but it remembers where it has been, and nothing is lost.
Even now the silent agreement that holds my body together feels like a secret, because to all appearances it doesn't exist. More than two hundred and fifty types of cells go about their daily business-the fifty functions that a liver cell performs are totally unique, not overlapping with the tasks of muscle, kidney, heart, or brain cells- yet it would be catastrophic if even one function were compromised. As it divides into billions of progeny, the first fertilized cell in my mother's womb kept its link to the source. At the level of memory, I still am that first cell. If I possess a soul, anything I could possibly know about it was told to my body first.
The mystery of life has found a way to express itself through me. In fact that's my purpose for being here. Am I fulfilling that purpose? If you read over the list again and take note of everything marked "not an option," you confront a stark fact: The very behavior that would kill our bodies in a day hasn't been renounced by us as people. We are selfish and greedy. We refuse to cooperate; we behave as though there is no higher purpose more important than the demands of I, me, and mine. In our fragmentation and confusion, we've been ignoring the very model of a perfect spiritual life inside ourselves.
As they evolved, cells learned what really works for survival. Your body can't afford to pay lip service to leading a spiritual life unless it wants to throw away eons of wisdom. Yet the vast majority of suffering in our personal lives comes about because we consciously choose to behave contrary to the soul bargain that keeps our bodies alive.
I had a wonderful experience last night. Denise Mendenhall, thirteen years old, spoke at Sterling's parent's home last night along with her Dad, Doug. They have a couple of books. (The second one needs lots of editing help, but overlooking its "weaknesses" it has a lot of powerful witnesses in it). Denise went into a diabetic coma and was on life support. Her doctors gave her no chance at all. When she awakened after three days they pronounced her a vegetable. Twenty-two days later she walked out of the hospital. She spent those three days with Christ and came back with no veil.
It seems a big part of her mission is to draw people to Christ. They told of their last trip to Arizona, and passing through Florence, a town of several prisons. There are signs posted everywhere DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS. Denise started laughing at one point and told her Dad that Jesus was standing at the side of the road with his thumb out. She laughed as they passed him by, "Dad you just passed Jesus."
"Well, tell him to join us."
Denise burst out laughing again. "Hey Dad, Jesus is running after us waving his arms."
The Jesus Denise portrays is one of good humor, compassion, wisdom, and most notable of all, he is totally non-judgemental. Doug says that not only is Jesus Denise's constant companion, but he is her entertainment. He tries to lighten her load as much as possible, for when one veil opens so does the other. Denise sees not only the good guys, but the dark ones as well. She tells of how last week Satan was outside her window turning himself into all sorts of grotesque looking creatures trying to scare her. She said she just laughed at him. Just before each of her speaking engagements he especially torments her. Doug says they can always tell when one of the demons has latched onto her as her voice lowers and the light in her eyes grows dim.
Denise made a most interesting comment. Consider that her family are very active Mormons and have been cleared by the General Authorities to give book reviews. She said, "Those Mormons believe that you have to be perfect and keep ALL the commandments to see Christ. I don't keep all the commandments and I see him all the time!" Of course she also sees how her weaknesses brings tears to the eyes of the Savior. The point she was making was that in all of our human weaknesses and frailities He is there waiting. We make it too difficult. Denise also claims our loved ones that have passed as well as angels we may not know are surrounding us, waiting for us to ask for their help.
Denise acknowledges even though she walks both sides of the veil, that she is still very much human. Her father concurs saying that she can be a real pain sometimes, a regular thirteen year old. Even with all of her gifts, she can be grouchy, rebellious a bit, and mouthy with her parents. She knows she is loved by Jesus anyway. She knows that Jesus may teach her a lesson because of her weaknesses, but he will never turn away from her, never judge her, and never leave her without help. But she has to ask. He will not trample on her or our free will.
Denise mentioned there are really only two commandments we must obey to see Christ: to love God with all of our heart, might, mind and strenth; and to love our neighbor. Then we must be willing to turn our will over to Jesus Christ. She portrayed it in a very cute way. She said when you turn your will over to Him he starts rubbing his hands together and smiles, "What can I have them do for me?" It can be a real test to do WHATEVER he asks and then to be able to discern that it really is Christ not Satan that is doing the asking.
When I asked about TV psychics, Doug commented that many do not discern the difference between Christ and Satan and teach both. Worse, many of them no longer acknowledge Christ and take credit for their gifts. He mentioned, and Denise concurred, that John Edwards is approved by Jesus. Denise told us that Jesus told her to watch his show Crossing Over. He told Denise that John is doing a great work. Not Mormon, he teaches of Pre-existence, non-judgment, a loving God, people's ability to communicate with loved ones and many other principles. Most telling, Jesus told Denise that John only keeps enough money for his family needs and gives the rest away. I do not believe that I have ever heard from John or from any media outlet that John does this. I love to watch his show and have always felt like he was doing a great work. It was great to receive a second witness of this humble man of God. Denise said her crazy friend from Provo, Dave, commented to her one day, "Wouldn't it be great for you to go see John Edwards and give HIM a reading?" She really glowed as she told us this. I believe she will.
As Denise has turned her will to over to God, she is given daily direction by Jesus. When Denise was told by Jesus she would no longer be going to an occupational therapist, her Dad wondered how they would stop. "Don't you have to go to these people until they release you?" Denise assured him that Jesus would take care of it that day.
Usually Denise struggled a bit to read at her fifth grade level. That day, however, she read a sixth grade level book faster than she had ever read making only two minor mistakes. Her therapist was astounded and released her from further therapy. As they left the office, Doug turned to Denise, "Hey, what was going on in there? You can't read like that!"
"I told you, Dad, that Jesus would take care of it. He came inside of me and read."
"Yeah, but you made two mistakes. I guess that was to make it look believeable, eh?"
"Maybe. Or maybe Jesus just made two mistakes." Denise rolled her eyes. "He makes mistakes, you know."
The Jesus she portrays is so much more approachable and real. I have often contended that it is Satan who portrays Jesus as this perfect, stoic, bleeding, humorless Son of God that none of us could ever hope to emulate. I am grateful that Jesus has allowed this personable child to teach us of Him. I know this man Jesus whom I usually call Joshua. I love him with all my heart. I am grateful for his kindnesses, his laughter, his forgiveness, and his love. He is a neat guy and VERY approachable. Do not ever let anyone tell you otherwise. He is waiting. What are you waiting for?
This will surprise you because it answers an unasked question.
There is one Christmas Carol that has always baffled me.
What in the world do leaping lords, French hens, swimming swans, and especially the partridge who won't come out of the pear tree have to do with Christmas?
Today, I found out. From 1558 until 1829, Roman Catholics in England were not permitted to practice their faith openly. Someone during that era wrote this carol as a catechism song for young Catholics. It has two levels of meaning: the surface meaning plus a hidden meaning known only to members of their church. Each element in the carol has a code word for a religious reality, which the children could remember.
The partridge in a pear tree was Jesus Christ.
Two turtledoves were the Old and New Testaments
Three French hens stood for faith, hope and love.
The four calling birds were the four gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke &John.
The five golden rings recalled the Torah or Law, the first five books of the Old Testament.
The six geese a-laying stood for the six days of creation.
Seven swans a-swimming represented the sevenfold gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership, and Mercy.
The eight maids a-milking were the eight beatitudes.
Nine ladies dancing were the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, and Self Control.
The ten lords a-leaping were the Ten Commandments.
The eleven pipers piping stood for the eleven faithful disciples.
The twelve drummers drumming symbolized the twelve points of belief in The Apostles' Creed.
So there is your history for today. This knowledge was shared with me and I found it interesting and enlightening and now I know how that strange song became a Christmas Carol... so pass it on if you wish.
This just tells you how hard it is to be single nowadays... This was on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Jay went into the audience to find the most embarrassing first date that a woman ever had. The winner described her worst first date experience. There was absolutely no question as to why her tale took the prize!
Marilyn said it was midwinter...snowing and quite cold...and the guy had taken her skiing to Lake Arrowhead. It was a day trip (no overnight). Oh no, not Marilyn. She was a good girl. They were strangers, after all, and truly had never met before.
The outing was fun but relatively uneventful until they were headed home late that afternoon. They were driving back down the mountain when she gradually began to realize that she should not have had that extra latte.
They were about an hour away from anywhere with a rest room and in the middle of nowhere! Her companion suggested she try to hold it, which she did for a while.
Unfortunately, because of the heavy snow and slow going, there came a point where she told him that he had better stop and let her pee beside the road, or it would be the front seat of his car.
They stopped and she quickly crawled out beside the car, yanked her pants down and started. Unfortunately, in the deep snow she didn't have good footing, so she let her butt rest against the rear fender to steady herself. Her companion stood on the side of the car watching for traffic and indeed was a real gentleman and refrained from peeking.
All she could think about was the relief she felt despite the rather embarrassing nature of the situation. Upon finishing however, she soon became aware of another sensation. As she bent to pull up her pants, the young lady discovered her buttocks were firmly glued against the car's fender. Thoughts of tongues frozen to pump handles immediately came to mind as she attempted to disengage her flesh from the icy metal. It was quickly apparent that she had a brand new problem due to the extreme cold.
Horrified by her plight and yet aware of the humor she answered her date's concerns about "what was taking so long" with a reply that indeed, she was "freezing her butt off and needed some assistance"! He came around the car as she tried to cover herself with her sweater and then, as she looked imploringly into his eyes, he burst out laughing. She too, got the giggles and when they finally managed to compose themselves, they assessed her dilemma.
Obviously, as hysterical as the situation was, they also were faced with a real problem. Both agreed it would take something hot to free her chilly cheeks from the grip of the icy metal!
Thinking about what had gotten her into the predicament in the first place, both quickly realized that there was only one way to get her free so, as she looked the other way, her first time date proceeded to unzip his pants and pee her butt off the fender.
As for the Tonight Show...she took the prize hands down...or perhaps that should be "pants down." And you thought your first date was embarrassing. This gives a whole new meaning to being "pissed off"

You all know how obsessed Ren is with Ireland these days. Here is a cute joke:
Irish Gardening
An old man lived alone in Ireland. He wanted to dig his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him, was in prison for bank robbery. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his predicament.
Shortly, he received this reply, "For HEAVEN'S SAKE Dad, don't dig up that garden, that's where I buried the money!"
At 4 A.M. the next morning, a dozen policemen showed up and dug up the entire garden, without finding any money. Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asking him what to do next.
His son's reply was: "Plant your potatoes, Dad. It's the best I could do from here."
You always hear the usual stories of pennies on the sidewalk being good luck, gifts from angels, etc. This is the first time I've ever heard this twist on the story; gives you something to think about.
Several years ago, a friend of mine and her husband were invited to spend the weekend at the husband's employer's home. My friend, Arlene, was nervous about the weekend. The boss was very wealthy, with a fine home on the waterway, and cars costing more than her house.
The first day and evening went well, and Arlene was delighted to have this rare glimpse into how the very wealthy live. The husband's employer was quite generous as a host, and took them to the finest restaurants. Arlene knew she would never have the opportunity to indulge in this kind of extravagance again, so was enjoying herself immensely.
As the three of them were about to enter an exclusive restaurant that evening, the boss was walking slightly ahead of Arlene and her husband. He stopped suddenly, looking down on the pavement for a long, silent moment. Arlene wondered if she was supposed to pass him. There was nothing on the ground except a single darkened penny that someone had dropped, and a few cigarette butts. Still silent, the man reached down and picked up the penny. He held it up and smiled, then put it in his pocket as if he had found a great treasure. How absurd! What need did this man have for a single penny? Why would he even take the time to stop and pick it up?
Throughout dinner, the entire scene nagged at her. Finally, she could stand it no longer. She causally mentioned that her daughter once had a coin collection, and asked if the penny he had found had been of some value. A smile crept across the man's face as he reached into his pocket for the penny and held it out for her to see. She had seen many pennies before! What was the point of this?
"Look at it." He said. "Read what it says."
She read the words "United States of America."
"No, not that; read further."
"One cent?"
"No, keep reading."
"In God we Trust?"
"Yes!"
"And?"
"And if I trust in God, the name of God is holy, even on a coin. Whenever I find a coin I see that inscription. It is written on every single United States coin, but we never seem to notice it! God drops a message right in front of me telling me to trust Him? Who am I to pass it by? When I see a coin, I pray, I stop to see if my trust IS in God at that moment. I pick the coin up as a response to God; that I do trust in Him. For a short time, at least, I cherish it as if it were gold. I think it is God's way of starting a conversation with me. Lucky for me, God is patient and pennies are plentiful!"
When I was out shopping today, I found a penny on the sidewalk. I stopped and picked it up, and realized that I had been worrying and fretting in my mind about things I cannot change. I read the words, "In God We Trust," and had to laugh. Yes, God, I get the message. It seems that I have been finding an inordinate number of pennies in the last few months, but then, pennies are plentiful! And, God is patient ...
This was forwarded to me and I thought you might enjoy it. Susan
Chapter 9
THE POWER OF THOUGHT
We generate three great forces every day of our lives: thought, emotion,
and action. And the most powerful of these three is thought. It is the
origin of action and controls emotion. Thought is as powerful a force as
electricity. Like all forms of energy, thought can be used both well and
ill, just as electricity can be used to improve the quality of life or
to destroy it. Since the action of every force has a corresponding
reaction, and since thought is a power we all control to some degree, it
is important for us to know what thought is and how it can be used
effectively.
The Nature and Effects of Thought
Thought is an energy produced by consciousness that modifies the
subtle matter of the mental plane. When we think, we cause our mental
body to vibrate in certain ways, and those vibrations are passed on to
the surrounding matter of the mental world. Those vibrations in effect
create forms-shapes in the mental energy field-whose colors, shapes,
definiteness of form, and persistence correspond to the quality, type,
clarity, and intensity of the thought that produced them. One of the
great Teachers said, succinctly and literally, "Thoughts are things."
When we habitually think the same thought or the same type of
thought, the resulting thought form is produced quickly and accurately.
On the other hand, when we attempt to think along new and, for us,
unusual lines, the resulting thought form will be slow and uncertain
because our mental body is not yet accustomed to that particular type of
vibration. This is one explanation for the initial difficulty people
sometimes experience in studying a new subject or thinking in new
directions. The mental body resists because of the effort required to
set aside habitual modes of thought and strike out in new directions
that lack the comfortable mental grooves (or vibrations) in which our
thought is accustomed to flow. New grooves have to be made by persistent
mental effort.
The effects of thought are of two kinds: those that react on us and
those that affect others. Both are important for our progress and for
that of the world.
The effects of our thoughts on us are twofold. First, any repeated
thought establishes a vibratory habit in our mental body. Second,
thought has side effects on the astral and causal bodies. In our astral
body, the effects are temporary emotions. In our causal body, however,
thoughts have a permanent influence on our character. We make ourselves
by the way we think. It is for this reason that right thought is so
important. Our thoughts not only reinforce our habitual physical and
emotional reactions, but they also build qualities into our causal body
that form part of our permanent character, life after life.
The effects of our thoughts on others are through the influence of
what we think on the mental field that surrounds us and interpenetrates
with the mental fields of others. The radiating vibrations of our
thought may create a thought form that floats through the mental plane,
reaching anyone else who may be attuned to it. A really powerful thought
can have an effect in the mental atmosphere like that of a thunderbolt
or a duststorm in the physical atmosphere.
In addition, because the mental and emotional energy fields are
intermingled and interpenetrating, thought vibrations are communicated
from one to the other and can cause changes in the emotional atmosphere
just as wind affects the surface of the sea and stirs up great waves. In
the same way, emotions play upon the matter of the mental realm and
create thoughts. Naturally, such mental-emotional vibrations can affect
anyone coming within their range, just as a storm of wind and waves at
sea affects ships caught in it. Thought forms, however, are not limited
by time and space in the way physical forms are. They can spread rapidly
over a wide area, being in that way more like radio or TV waves than air
or water waves.
Thought waves convey the general nature of the original thought,
rather than its exact message. For example, a Christian might pick up
the thought of awe or devotion of a Hindu worshipper of Sri Krishna. But
the Christian would perceive and express it as devotion to Jesus.
Similarly, a person might have an angry thought about someone who has
been annoying, and that thought may be picked up by other persons who do
not even know the original thinker or the person with whom the thinker
was angry. Yet that thought can reinforce any anger in their own hearts
and be directed against whoever they are at odds with.
We are surrounded by others' thoughts of many sorts: happy and sad,
angry and peaceful. But no external thought can have any effect on us
unless we are already attuned to its kind. We are not victims of the
mental world around us, but active participants in it. Just as you
select a TV channel to watch, you can select a thought channel to
participate in. Obviously then, it is a good idea for us to tune in to
right thoughts in the mental world. Right thoughts are a shield against
wrong ones. The way to air out a badly ventilated room is to open its
windows and flood it with fresh air; the way to clear a mind clogged
with wrong thoughts is to fill it with right ones.
Clairvoyants tell us that thought forms have shapes and color-pale
or vivid, muddy or clear-according to the type and character of the
thought that created them. They also say that the definiteness or
vagueness of a thought is reflected in the clarity of the outline of its
form. If our thoughts are clear-and they can be clear in a harmful as
well as a helpful way-they will be resistant to being replaced by other
thoughts. Prejudice, for example, can create rigid thought forms, hard
to dissolve, whereas fairness creates forms that are adaptable but also
strong. And the more intensely we think, the longer the thought forms we
produce will last.
Concentration and Meditation
Concentration and meditation are two important aspects of the power
of thought. Concentration is obviously of value everyday in all our
activities. To concentrate on our work is to do it more efficiently and
so to free ourselves quickly for other activities. Regularly
concentrating on the details of everyday life forms a habit of
attention, which will prove valuable when we take up any other subject
requiring concentration of thought. Concentration is also essential for
the second aspect of thought, meditation. Only a mind trained to stay on
one subject, to concentrate on one task to the exclusion of all others,
can succeed in meditation.
Meditation is especially important if we are to undertake the inner
work needed for treading the Path-the process of becoming all that we
can and should be. Meditation aims at quieting all the activities of the
personality-physical, emotional, and mental-in order that our focus may
be redirected from our transitory personality to our abiding
individuality. To achieve that change of focus, various meditative
techniques are available. Some are more appropriate for one person or
one occasion; some for others. No single technique is best for everyone,
but some basic practices are helpful, whatever techniques are eventually
used.
At the start, devote five minutes each morning to quiet, positive
thought, focusing on qualities we want to develop. We all know our own
faults, such as getting irritated over trifles, or worrying
unnecessarily, being critical, unkind, or sarcastic, talking too much
and gossiping, or withdrawing and being aloof. We can each name our own
shortcomings. Thinking about these negative characteristics, however, is
not the way to get rid of them. Instead, thinking about their opposites
will help to replace them. Devoting five minutes each morning to
thinking about qualities that complement our weaknesses is more helpful
than anything else we can do. Close your eyes and, in imagination, see
yourself acting with the quality you want to acquire. To do this,
concentration is essential; this exercise can be done only if the mind
can stay on one subject, concentrate on one activity, to the exclusion
of all others.
If you are easily irritated, practice seeing yourself as serene,
calm, kind. But be aware that a test will come: at some point irritation
will overwhelm you, and you may think that you have failed. But if you
have done the practice regularly, you will find that the irritation
passes more quickly and easily than it did before. This will be so
increasingly, and a time will eventually come when you will no longer
react with irritation, no matter what the situation. Then you can begin
on another aspect you want to foster.
Eventually you will feel that a five-minute period of such practice
is not sufficient. The glow and the peace that results will hold you
longer, and you will be correspondingly better able to manage your day
intelligently and prudently. But regularity is more important than
duration. Those skilled in such practices tell us that a regular
schedule is most important; we should not miss a single day if we can
help it.
We should not worry if results do not come as swiftly or as
completely as we would like. Worry is one of the most difficult habits
to overcome. It is a process of repeating the same negative thought over
and over again, digging a rut deeper and deeper into one's
consciousness. That's what it means to be "in a rut." The only way to
get out of the rut is to start working in a new direction by giving your
mental body new thoughts to repeat. You can memorize and, whenever a fit
of worry strikes you, repeat to yourself such sayings as these: "Peace I
leave with you; my peace I give unto you. Let not your heart be
troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14.27). "The Self is peace;
that Self am I. The Self is strength; that Self am I." "All shall be
well, and all shall be well, and all shall be well." Such thoughts give
the mind new channels to follow, and, as it flows into them, it is freed
from its earlier rut.
Similarly, we do not help the sick by thinking about their illness,
but by sending them healing thoughts and seeing them in our imagination
as whole and hale. We do not help "sinners" by dwelling on their faults,
which result from a lack of wholeness; instead, we serve them by
thinking of their good qualities and sending them thoughts of love,
peace, and progress, which will flow into their minds as soon as there
is a point of entry and help to develop those qualities in them.
Since the dead are also within the reach of our thoughts, it is also
important to send them only the most loving thoughts of which we are
capable. Prayers for the dead are offered in many religions because they
are known to be effective. And sending the dead calm, comforting, not
sad, thoughts will help them to make their adjustment on the other side.
Ultimately, however, the purpose of meditation is not just to
improve our personality, but rather to put us in touch with our own
inner core, which has in it nothing but the good, the true, and the
beautiful. The purpose of meditation is to help us discover who we
really are- to introduce us to the divine reality within ourselves and
to awaken us to the realization that everything really important is
already inside us.
To make this discovery, to meet our own inner spark, and to wake up
to reality needs something other than thinking-other even than thinking
good thoughts. What is needed is to make contact with an inner knowing,
a transcendental wisdom, a gnosis at the core of our being. The
Theosophical term for that is "buddhi." And we contact buddhi not by
using our mind but by quieting it. Spend five minutes every day in just
being quiet, in not choosing, but just being silently aware of
everything around you and within you.
It has been said, "Meditation is not what you think." And that is
correct in two senses. We may think that meditation is thinking about
something. But thinking about something is concentration, a prerequisite
to meditation, not meditation itself. Meditation is not thinking at all,
but instead experiencing an inner reality that is deeper than all
feelings and thoughts. It is being calm, peaceful, energized, comforted,
strengthened, and enlightened. Athletes call it being in the zone or in
the flow. Mystics call it listening to the Voice of the Silence.
The German poet, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, gave five rules for
life, each of which involves the ability to control thought and all of
which collectively lead to greater power of awareness: "Do not worry
about your past. Do not be angry. Do not hate. Enjoy the present. Leave
your future to Providence." These rules are also ways to make contact
with our own inner knowing, for it is Providence within us.
In moments of tranquility, from our own deep center of life, we can
gather the forces that raise us to new heights on the Path. The advice
of St. Paul is as useful today as it was some 2000 years ago: "Finally,
brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest,
whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever
things are of good report; if there be any virtue and if there be any
praise, think on these things" (Philippians 4.8).

If I have sent this before, sorry, but it might be good to read again.
Let me clarify a few terms that may be unfamiliar. Ego in this quote refers
to the Soul and causal body is more akin to what LDS call "intelligence."
Astral/emotional refers to the existence right after this one and LDS would
term it the spirit world. For those that think that evil is ONLY in our own
minds or our own creation I offer this as food for thought.
Quote from DK:
Today I seek to speak to you on The powers of the Dark Brotherhood. Certain
laws that govern their actions, certain methods employed by them in work need
to be realized and certain methods of protection apprehended and utilized. As
before I have told you the danger is as yet inappreciable to the majority, but
more and more as time elapses shall we find it necessary to teach you, the
physical plane workers, how to shield and guard yourselves from attack.
The Dark Brothers are - remember this always - brothers, erring and misguided
yet still sons of the one Father though straying far, very far, into the land
of distances. The way back for them will be long, but the mercy of evolution
inevitably forces them back along the path of return in cycles far ahead.
Anyone who over-exalts the concrete mind and permits it continuously to shut
out the higher, is in danger of straying on the left-hand path. Many so
stray... but come back, and then in the future avoid like errors in the same
way as a child once burnt avoids the fire. It is the man who persists in spite
of warning and of pain who eventually becomes a brother of darkness. Mightily
fights the Ego [soul] at first to prevent the Personality so developing, but
the deficiencies of the causal body (for forget not that our vices are but our
virtues misused) result in a lop-sided causal body, over-developed in some
direction and full of great gulfs and gaps where virtues should be.
The dark brother recognizes no unity with his species, only seeing in them
people to be exploited for the furtherance of his own ends. This then, on a
small scale, is the mark of those who are being used by them wittingly or
unwittingly. They respect no person, they regard all men as fair prey, they
use everyone to get their own way enforced, and by fair means or foul they
seek to break down all opposition and for the personal self acquire that which
they desire.
The dark brother considers not what suffering he may cause; he cares not what
agony of mind he brings upon an opponent; he persists in his intention and
desists not from the hurt of any man, woman or child, provided that in the
process his own ends are furthered. Expect absolutely no mercy from those
opposing the Brotherhood of Light.
On the physical plane and on the emotional plane, the dark brother has more
power than the Brother of the Light, - not more power per se but more apparent
power, because the White Brothers choose not to exert Their power on those two
planes, as do the Dark Brothers. They could exert Their authority but They
choose to refrain, working with the powers of evolution and not of involution.
The elemental forces to be found on these two planes are manipulated by two
factors.
The inherent forces of evolution that direct all on to eventual perfection.
The White Adepts cooperate in this.
The Dark Brothers occasionally employ these elemental forces to wreak their
will and vengeance on all opponents...Oft too the Dark Brother masquerades as
an agent of the light, oft he poses as a messenger of the gods, but for your
assurance I would say that he who acts under the guidance of the Ego [soul]
will have clear vision, and will escape deception.
At this time their power is oft-times mighty. Why? Because so much exists as
yet in the Personalities of all men that respond to their vibration, and so it
is easy for them to affect the bodies of men. So few of the races,
comparatively speaking, have as yet built in the higher vibration that
responds to the keynote of the Brotherhood of Light, who move practically
entirely on the two highest levels (or the atomic and subatomic subplanes) of
the mental, emotional and physical planes. When moving on these subplanes the
attacks of elementals on lower planes may be felt but effect no harm, hence
the necessity of pure living and controlled pure emotions and elevated
thought.
You will notice that I said that the power of the Dark Brotherhood is dominant
apparently on the physical and emotional planes. Not so is it on the mental,
which is the plane on which the Brothers of the Light work. Mighty dark
magicians may be located on the lower mental levels, but on the higher, the
White Lodge dominates, the three higher subplanes being the levels that They
beg the evolving sons of men to seek; it is Their region, to which all must
strive and aspire. The Dark Brother impresses his will on human beings (if
analogous vibration exists) and on the elemental kingdoms of involution. The
Brothers of Light plead as pleaded the Man of Sorrows for an erring humanity
to rise upward to the light. The Dark Brother retards progress and shapes all
to his own ends; the Brother of Light bends every effort to the hastening of
evolution and - foregoing all that might be His as the price of achievement -
stays amid the fogs, the strife, the evil and the hatred of the period if, in
so doing, He may by all means aid some, and (lifting them up out of the
darkness of earth) set their feet upon the Mount, and enable them to surmount
the Cross.
And now what methods may be employed to safeguard the worker in the field of
the world? What can be done to ensure his safety in the present strife and in
the greater strife of the coming centuries?
A realization that purity of all the vehicles is the prime essential. If a
Dark Brother gains control over any man it but shows that that man has in his
life some weak spot. The door whereby entrance is effected must be opened by
the man himself; the opening whereby malignant force can be poured in must be
caused by the occupant of the vehicles. Therefore the need of scrupulous
cleanliness of the physical body, of clean steady emotion permitted in the
emotional body, and of purity of thought in the mental body. When this is so,
coordination will be present in the lower vehicles and the indwelling Thinker
himself permits no entrance.
The elimination of all fear. The forces of evolution vibrate more rapidly than
those of involution and in this fact lies a recognizable security. Fear causes
weakness; weakness causes a disintegration; the weak spot breaks and a gap
appears, and through that gap evil force may enter. The factor of entrance is
the fear of the man himself, who opens thus the door.
A standing firm and unmoved, no matter what occurs. Your feet may be bathed in
the mud of earth, but your head may be bathed in the sunshine of the higher
regions. Recognition of the filth of earth involves not contamination.
A recognition of the use of common sense and the application of this common
sense to the matter in hand. Sleep much and, in sleeping, learn to render the
body positive; keep busy on the emotional plane and achieve the inner calm. Do
naught to overtire the body physical, and play whenever possible. In hours of
relaxation comes the adjustment that obviates later tension.

THE ROSE
A certain man planted a rose and watered it faithfully, and before it
blossomed, he examined it. He saw the bud that would soon blossom
and also the thorns. And he thought, "How can any beautiful flower
come from a plant burdened with so many sharp thorns?" Saddened by
this thought, he neglected to water the rose, and before it was ready to
bloom, it died.
So it is with many people. Within every soul there is a rose. The
God-like qualities planted in us at birth grow amid the thorns of our
faults. Many of us look at ourselves and see only the thorns, the
defects. We despair, thinking that nothing good can possibly come from
us. We neglect to water the good within us, and eventually it dies. We
never realize our potential.
Some people do not see the rose within themselves; someone else must
show it to them. One of the greatest gifts a person can possess is to be
able to reach past the thorns and find the rose within others. This is
the characteristic of love, to look at a person, and knowing his faults,
recognize the nobility in his soul, and help him realize that he can
overcome his faults. If we show him the rose, he will conquer the
thorns. Then will he blossom, blooming forth thirty, sixty, a
hundred-fold as it is given to him.
Our duty in this world is to help others by showing them their roses and
not their thorns. Only then can we achieve the love we should feel for
each other; only then can we bloom in our own garden.

The Gathering Principle Continued
JJ: The name of the beast in the forehead is what?
Audience: Inaudible discussion.
JJ: Right, the name of the beast-- the number of the beast in the forehead
is 666. The number of the beast is 666 and the name of the beast is
authority. The reason it's called 666 is because 6 is the number that
governs emotional energy and 6 is the number which governs the age of
Pisces which we are now leaving. The first six is symbolic of emotional
control over the physical reality. The second six is being led by your
emotions in the astral world. The third six is having your mind subjected
to emotional control or astral control. These are the three sixes. So if
a person has a number of 666. . .
Audience: Inaudible.
JJ: Six is the number of the ray which governs Pisces. It governs the
solar plexus and it governs the astral world where there is great
deception. The astral world is the desire world controlled by the
emotions. So, the first 6 represents the physical world; the physical
world governed by the pure emotions without mind. The second is where our
emotional world is governed by its self without any influence of the higher
worlds. It's governed by its self which is another 6. The third is the
mental world. The mind is not governed by its self but it's governed by
the emotional feeling. The reason it's called the beast is because the
beast reacts not by mind but by feeling.
Remember what I said about the dog yesterday? I say, "Bad dog, bad dog"
(in a soft tone) and I speak with feeling but I say something negative and
the dog responds by panting happily. He thinks it's great. The beast is
controlled purely by the way that it feels. A beast has to be herded and
controlled and directed by a master. Those that are subject to the beast
have to be guided by some authority, outward authority, not God, but an
outward authority that takes the place of the inner God. This outward
authority is his master and that makes him subject to the beast. He's
subject to the beast because the number 6, the astral world, the astral
desire nature, tells him how to think.
The astral desire nature tries to govern itself. The astral desire nature
tries to govern physical reality. Almost all the world is subject to these
three 6's. They have the mark in their forehead which means they have to
think as they're told to think by the beast. They have the mark in their
right hand which is a symbol of work, of labor, in the scriptures. That
means they have to labor as they're told to labor by the beast. Any work
that they do is subject to some authority telling them what to do. Any
thought they think is subject to an authority approving that thought. If
they go out of what the authorities tell them they can think or do then the
beast does everything in his power to put them back in line by the fear of
God or whatever means necessary. The beast can use the fear of God because
the beast takes the place of God and becomes their outward God.
Then John saw the 144,000 had the mark of God in their forehead, which was
the name of God. To have the name of God in your forehead removes you from
the power of the beast. Why? It's because when you realize that you have
the name of God in your forehead, you realize that you are one with God.
Remember, Jesus said, "I and my Father are one. My Father has given me His
name and His name I give unto you and you will be one even as I and my
Father are one." When we are one as Christ and His Father are one we have
the name of God in our forehead. To find God we look where? Do we have to
go ask a priest where God is? Do we have to go ask a prophet, a bishop or
an elder, or a pastor or a reverend? No, we look within and we ask within.
The kingdom of God is within you. Look within and you find the name of God
is your name. Your name and the name of God is one. Your real name and
the name of God is one and you look within and within is the spirit of God.
The same thing is with the parable of the virgins. There were ten virgins.
Five virgins were foolish and five were wise. The five wise had oil in
their lamps. The five foolish did not have much oil in their lamps. They
needed the oil in their lamps because when the bell sounded and the
bridegroom appeared they needed the oil to light the way so they could go
and meet the bridegroom. When the signal came that the bridegroom was
coming the five wise virgins lit their lamps then went to meet the
bridegroom. The five foolish virgins said, "We have not enough oil. Lend
us your oil that we may have enough oil to go see the bridegroom also."
The five wise virgins said, "If we give you half of our oil we will not
have enough to get there and none of us will have enough oil to meet the
bridegroom. Therefore we will not give you our oil. Go therefore to them
in the market that sell the oil and buy your own oil." This is an
interesting parable. What is the oil in the lamps?
Audience: Inaudible.
JJ: Close.
Audience: Inaudible.
JJ: Right, the Holy Spirit. So the five wise virgins had the Holy Spirit
and they had a fullness of it. Their lamps and their bodies and their
souls were full of the Holy Spirit. The time came that they were going out
to meet the master. To meet the master they had to have the inner light
shining so it would lighten the path before them so they would know where
to go to meet the master. Those who did not have the Holy Spirit within
them, said, "We want to go meet the master too. Stop and share your light
with us so we can meet him." Those who had the Holy Spirit said, "We have
been with you and the sharing time is over. It's our turn to now go meet
the master. Go to the others who want to be authorities over you and tell
you how to obtain the spirit and tell you how to meet God. Go to them and
see if they can help you. We have to now gather out and go and meet the
master." So the wise virgins left and those five foolish virgins stayed
behind and met the powers that be and tried to get enlightenment from them.
The parable of the five wise virgins is a parable of the gathering in a
way. Those who have the name of God in their forehead, their lamps full of
the Holy Spirit, their light so shines before men that the path to Christ
or unto the Masters is lightened before them. The light is within them.
It's not some external light. The five foolish virgins thought the light
was out there somewhere; that they could borrow the light from somebody
else and this borrowed light would shine forth for them. The five wise
virgins realized that borrowed light wouldn't do them any good; that they
had to obtain their own light through trial and error. The foolish virgins
had to go out in the market place and stumble and make a lot of mistakes
until finally they could fill up their lamp from within sop it could
lighten the way on the straight and narrow path.
Christ said, "If the light that is within you be darkness, how great is
that darkness. But if the light that is within you will be the light of
Christ, that light will shine forth unto the perfect day." If the light
that is within us be the Holy Spirit, which is achieved through soul, then
the door is open between us and the higher worlds. The Holy Spirit can
then flow within us and we can be full of light so the path before us is
always clear. When the person has the Holy Spirit within him he always
sees his next step. If we do not see our next step we need to obtain a
greater portion of the spirit because when the light shines within us, the
light of our next step is there before us. We should always be able to see
that so we must ask ourselves the question, "Do I see my next step?" If we
do not see it we must call in a greater portion of the light. We must
listen less to the voices out there and listen to the voices within.
One might say to me, "Aren't you a voice without with what you're teaching
us?" Yes and no. I'm the voice without but if my voice without stirs your
voice within and says the same thing as the voice within you is saying,
then it is the voice within. Sometimes we need to be reminded of what the
voice within is trying to tell us. Sometimes we don't listen to the voice
within and when a voice without reverberates what your soul is attempting
to tell you, then it's the same as the voice within. When Christ was on
the Earth teaching His disciples and He said, "Love your neighbor as
yourself" the apostles felt, "yes, that's what the voice within is telling
me. I just wasn't listening." It woke them up to what the voice within
verifies. We're stimulated from without and verified from within.
Stimulated from without and verified from within, that's how we progress.
None of us can do it alone. We all have to be reminded of what the voice
within will verify. This is why we need to assist and teach each other.
We need to remember what the true name of Christ means. The true name of
Christ means 'anointed to deliver'. When you take upon the name of Christ
it isn't accomplished by saying, "I take upon myself the name of Christ."
That does nothing. To take upon yourself the name of Christ means that you
are anointed by the Holy Spirit; you have brought down a portion of the
Spirit within yourself and you then seek to take that oil of the Spirit and
deliver to others and bring them up to where you are. When you do this you
have taken upon yourself the name of Christ and you bear the name of
Christ. This is the only way to do it.
Going to church will not do it. Listening to sermons will not do it.
Doing missionary work will not do it. By taking upon yourself the higher
teachings, higher truths and relating them to others and bringing them up
to where you are; that is taking upon yourself the name of Christ. You
become a Christ by doing that. "A savior shall appear upon Mount Zion."
That's written in the book of Obadiah. Saviors shall come upon Mount Zion;
Christ shall come upon Mount Zion because that's what a savior is. A
savior is a Christ. There will be many Christs in the last days; many true
Christs as well as many false Christs. Who are the false Christs? The
false Christs are those who do not take upon themselves the true name of
Christ, that seek to serve the ego. Instead of attempting to grab his
brother's hand and lift him up to where he is, he attempts to extract from
his brother, everything he has so he can have his own glory. This is the
false Christ; the one who tries to present himself as the Christ rather
than attempting to make other people as Christ.
By lifting others up to where we are, we take upon ourselves that holy
name. When we take upon ourselves that holy name, we provide a conduit for
the spirit to flow through us and through those we are seeking to help. If
we are not seeking to help somebody the Spirit has nowhere to flow. If the
Spirit has nowhere to flow, it will not come to us. But when we reach out
so the Spirit can see it has someplace to go, then it will flow through you
into the other person. In this way you are glorified, God is glorified and
the person that you help and assist is glorified.
So, when you take upon yourself the name of Christ and you speak the words
of Christ, the words of Christ reverberate in that person and he is finding
truth within himself. You may stimulate but he finds. You cannot
force-feed him, you can only stimulate, but he will find and verify whereas
a false teacher will say, "Listen to me because I am an authority and
because I am an authority what I say is true."
They don't tell you to verify within. They will not emphasize that but the
emphasis will be, either subtly or overtly, "Listen to me. What I say is
true because I am an authority." That is the mark of the beast. This is
the beast talking when the beast presents himself as an authority that you
must believe merely because of the power of his word. That's the mark of
the beast. Those who receive such a person, substitute him for the God
within. The true teacher does not substitute for the God within but all he
tries to do is stimulate then the student verifies from within himself. In
this the student and the teacher become one. The Christ and the student
become one. The Father and the Son become one. Through oneness the lowest
is pulled up to where the highest is. Eventually the highest and lowest
will all be equal in spiritual gifts.
It's like last night someone asked, "How are you going to give everybody a
blessing?" It wasn't necessary because any spiritual gift I have can be
passed on to you because I have no spiritual gift outside of the gift that
the Spirit may have. If I reach out to you, the Spirit will flow from me
to you and if you reach out to somebody else it will flow from you to them.
So everybody last night had the same power of the Spirit to bless and to
heal and to help. The lowest and the highest are all made equal in the
power of the spiritual gifts. That's a glorious thing.
So, the gathering of the coming age will be those who recognize, those who
can be stimulated and they can recognize the speech and the truths
presented that are verified by the God within. These people, when they
begin to recognize and reverberate within, and meet another person who has
this same process going on, are going to sense a familiarity in each other.
Have you ever met somebody else you felt very familiar with because you
know they are also receiving similar things that you are receiving? There
is a similarity of vibration. Lorraine is shaking her head. That's a
great feeling when you meet somebody who you feel on a same wavelength with.
These lights that feel on the same wavelength, when they merge, like in a
group like this, and then go back home, find it's kind of boring to be back
among people that have no interest in going higher. They have a desire to
get back together. It's like coming home. So this is what the gathering
is about; to take these people home to where they can share this similarity
of vibration. When this similarity of vibration is shared, more revelation
comes. On another scale, let's look back on the founding of America again.
Some of the greatest lights came from Europe and various nations to
America. When they got here they experienced a similarity of vibration.
They all loved freedom. They loved the freedom to think for themselves.
They had a similarity of vibration and when they got together they shared
ideas and came up with a lot of interesting ideas on how to make a better
system than any one of them could've come up with on their own. Thus they
created the Constitution, The Bill of Rights, certain guaranteed freedoms,
a fairly democratic system but unfortunately since that time we have
drifted away from the original intent. We think we've improved things
since then but there are many things we have made worse.
The next gathering will be of a spiritual nature. When spiritual people
get together they gather ideas; they have a lot more inspiration and
revelation. I've noticed this whenever I'm associated with anyone for any
length of time, that's on a similar vibration, you feel a lot of ideas come
or maybe they might ask you questions that a lot of people don't ask which
gives you seed thoughts to contemplate. This is the beginning of the
gatherings. There are other groups gathering too. Eventually there will
be pockets where people will gather in various cities around the nation and
around the world. These people will gather together in the physical and
eventually create the molecular order that we've talked about. (For those
of you who haven't read it we have a free book about it on the internet.)
These people will gather together and share light with each other. Then
after a period of time, hopefully this will be accomplished within the next
20-30 years; that a large group of people will be available to gather
together into one place. Where that one place is will be given out at the
right time.
In order to accomplish this, the number of people to initiate the gathering
will have to number in the thousands and The Immortal series will have to
be eventually be sold in the millions. When this happens it will give us
power to gather out the lights and to create a completely different and new
spiritual order of things where there will be more freedom of thought and
movement than has ever existed before that will touch the hearts of many
millions and transform the governments and peoples of the earth.

True Freedom
My American Friends. I hope you had a good Fourth of July. And to those
of you who are not Americans I hope you had a good one too, even though
you did not celebrate a holiday.
On this day when many celebrate freedom and independence it would be a good
idea to reflect on just what true freedom and independence is.
Unfortunately, illusion is increasing worldwide on just what freedom is
and the dark clouds covering their vision is becoming so thick and so
ubiquitous that the concept of false freedom is threatening to replace true
freedom.
The two views of freedom are easy to state but hard for the masses to
understand, yet the Lights must radiate the true principle to the masses or
else the Dark Brothers will have their victory. The glorious vision of the
New Age can only be manifested through the principle of true freedom.
Without it, the coming age will be a mere repetition of the darkest of ages.
Just as there is Anti Christ there is anti freedom. The false view of
freedom is as follows:
"I am becoming freer so long as my I have increased power to fulfill my
desires, even this causes a decrease in the freedom of others by forcing
individuals or groups to forfeit their desired freedoms"
True Freedom:
"I cannot fulfill my desires at the expense of the freedom of others
because I am one with my brethren. If the whole is diminished then the
freedom of each individual is ultimately threatened. I can only enjoy true
freedom for myself when the power I use does not diminish the freedom of
the group or the individual. I take my freedom the day I allow freedom for
all - the day that my use of power heals, not hurts; empowers, not
diminishes; sets free and not enslaves. I am free only if my freewill
increases the freedom of the whole."
When one reads these two statements almost all will think they fit into the
second category, but the true principle of freedom is so clouded by dogma
and our own little desires that the majority fits in the first category in
several areas of their thinking.
Abraham Lincoln understood these two views of freedom and was personally
puzzled that so many otherwise intelligent people fell into the first
category. Time and time again he heard southerners express the idea that
they would loose freedom if they had to give up their slaves. Lincoln had
difficulty having empathy for this idea since freedom in their mind
depended on the slavery of an entire race and he commented on how faulty
this reasoning was.
The idea of many in the Old South that fighting for the retention of
slavery was a fight for freedom may seem odd to us, but it made sense to
them within their framework.
They believed that their slaves increased freedom because:
(1) Their slaves did many menial chores and tiresome labor. The slave
owner had more free time to work at enjoyable activities.
(2) The slaves normally received no wages so this gave the slave owner
greater profits and more financial freedom. In fact it seemed that slave
labor gave all the Southern States more financial freedom.
(3) They feared that if slaves were given their freedom that their own
freedom would be threatened.
All of this was illusion. For one thing the North which had no slaves was
richer than the South with slaves. The North also was not threatened by
free blacks.
Then too, since the civil war in an atmosphere of freedom we have developed
appliances and machinery that gives us much more freedom without slaves
than any civilization had in the past with slaves.
It is interesting that all who seek to enslave the souls of humanity do so
in the name of freedom. Even the most notorious of villains, Adolph Hitler
sought to enslave the nations of the earth in the name of freedom.
Freedom for who?
Freedom for the handful of people who agreed with him, but to the great
detriment of freedom for the rest of the world.
So now it is obvious to all of us that the first category is illusion - right?
Wrong.
Just like the people of the Old South were caught up in an illusionary idea
of freedom, even so do the people of today do the same thing. The only
difference is the focus has shifted.
"But no one in the free world supports the idea of slavery or
totalitarianism today. Surely most people will support the second view."
It would seem that way until one examines the new slavery which was
prophesied by Isaiah:
"For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to
sojourn there; and the Assyrian oppressed them without cause. Now
therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away
for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and
my name continually every day is blasphemed. Therefore my people shall
know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth
speak: behold, it is I. Isa 52:4-6
Here the Lord mentions the plight of the Israelites who were slaves in
ancient Egypt, but in referring to the future he talks of a time when with
no money is paid for the slaves (taken away for nought) and "they that
rule over them make them to howl."
Isaiah says that this slavemaster will be able to boast:
"I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed
their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant man:
And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one
gathereth eggs that are left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was
none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped." Isa 10:13-14
So who is this latter day slavemaster who makes his subjects "howl?" Who
is he who thinks he is clever in removing the "bounds of the people,"
(restricting property rights) "robbed their treasures" (heavy taxation) and
"put down the inhabitants like a valiant man?" (treated those he robs as
criminals if they do not cooperate).
And what is the attitude of the modern day slaves:
"...there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped."
Unlike the ancient Hebrew slaves, who wanted a deliverer, these modern
slaves do not move the wing, open their mouths, or make a peep of
resistance.
How is it that our situation corresponds to slavery?
The answer is quite simple. The first most glaring response is:
TAXATION
The average taxpayer in the United States (all hidden and obvious taxes
considered) pays around 50% of his income to the government. Other nations
fare even worse, paying up to 70% or more.
Before the Revolutionary War the United States had no income tax and the
whole rebellion was ignited by tariffs imposed by the British without the
consent of the governed.
Wouldn't it be nice if the only tax we had today were a few tariffs?
Instead of rebelling as did the Founding Fathers, most taxpayers would
rejoice.
Another interesting point is that many of the slaves in ancient Greece,
Rome and other states were allowed to keep 50% of what they earned and many
eventually saved enough to buy their freedom.
What is the reasoning for this situation we are in where our tribute is
higher than ancient slaves and often twice the amount of medieval surfs?
The ancient slaves could buy their way out of their situation, but modern
man is unable to do this at any price.
To understand this we need to look at the real cause of the rebellion of
the Founding Fathers. The cause was not the amount of the tax itself, but
there were two factors which very much concerned them:
(1) Taxation without representation.
(2) The fact that taxation could be increased without the consent of the
taxpayer.
Unfortunately, we have this same situation today to an even greater degree
with more arms of taxation than mere tariffs.
Many who pay taxes feel that they have no voice (representation) on how the
money is spent.
On the second point few taxpayers feel they have any say or influence
regarding continuing tax increases.
Why is it that the modern slavemaster (governments of the earth) continue
to raise taxes to the strangulation level?
The answer is quite simple.
They feel that their main job description is to spend our money in ways
that will please their constituents. Since it is in the nature and
disposition of almost all people to perform their job well, the various
representatives seek spend money in creative ways that will please the
voters and pressure groups. In attempting to spend money on as many voters
and pressure groups as possible they find there is never enough money to
go around. Therefore, they seek to continually raise additional revenue
through an increase in taxation
This drift takes us toward a major problem which is becoming a threat to
civilization as we know it. It is this:
As the powers-that-be tax the many and give to the few, the few become the
many and the many want more and more from those who are taxed. Finally we
reach a situation (as exists now) where the majority of the people are
receiving benefits from the taxpayer from which they are making little or
no contribution. We are also reaching the point where about half of the
people in the United States do not pay any income tax with the other half
paying excessive tax. Yet those who pay little or no income tax reap
entitlements from the tax.
Consider this: If we have half of the people paying no income tax, yet
reaping payments from the tax - how are they going to vote?
Because they pay no tax - will they be concerned about increasing the tax
"on the rich" and not so rich?
No. This group will be happy to elect representatives who will increase
taxes because they are free from the increased tax, but have increase
benefits themselves.
This puts the taxpayer in the situation of the ancient slaves. The amount
they are taxed is not determined by themselves, but by freeloaders who pay
no income taxes.
Those who support representatives who are for higher taxes are therefore in
category one mentioned earlier.
Let me repeat it:
"I am becoming freer so long as my I have increased power to fulfill my
desires, even this causes a decrease in the freedom of others by forcing
individuals or groups to forfeit their desired freedoms"
Remember when we applied this principle to the Old South and how it made
sense?
But if we apply it to people today making the same error many will be
offended. Even so, let us continue.
A hot topic of the day in the U.S. is free prescription drugs. Many who do
not pay income tax (or pay tax and want their share back) want to become
freer by forcing others (the taxpayer) to forfeit their desired freedoms to
buy them drugs.
There are hundreds of government give-away programs where the same
principle applies. Those who receive feel they are obtaining greater
freedom and overlook the fact that this freedom is at the expense of the
loss of freedom of many others.
They are like the Old South who felt their slaves made them free and had no
desire to free them.
"But," says a supporter, "many of the programs do so much good. People
need prescription drugs, they need welfare, farmers need price supports,
big business needs subsidies, the elderly need Medicaid, the sex life of
the black beetle needs studied and so on. If we do not force people to pay
for these programs through taxes then many will suffer."
That's what the Old South said when faced with freeing the slaves. "If we
free the slaves, then all the benefits we receive from them will disappear,
our way of life will change and we shall be devastated."
But the slaves were freed and it was not long before they were more
prosperous than ever.
Would the same thing happen if the modern slaves were freed and were able
to give consent to the system of taxation? If we eliminated "taxation
without representation" so the taxpayer could not be forced to pay tax by
those who do not pay (or receive more benefit than they pay out), would our
system collapse?
On the contrary. Things would get better. Much better. The economy would
go through the roof, tax evasion would be reduced to a minimum because of
true fairness.
The second way many of us are in a slave-like situation is:
TOO MANY LAWS
Every year thousands of new laws are passed and virtually none of the old
ones are repealed.
Each of these laws is a restriction of freedom. That is what a civil law
does. It restricts.
What, therefore, should be our attitude toward law? Because law restricts
freedom then to have the maximum amount of freedom we need the minimum
number of laws.
Legislators should spend as much time figuring out how to eliminate laws as
they do in making them until the nation works efficiently on only those
laws which are essential to our well being.
If we were to educate the people on the right thing to do most of the laws
could be dropped and society would be the better for it.
Thus we have briefly covered two principles in establishing maximum
freedom. Do not increase the servitude of others so you can benefit and
keep only those laws absolutely essential to our well being.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of
wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was
the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of
Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had
everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to
Heaven, we were all going direct the other way--in short, the period was so
far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted
on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of
comparison only. Charles Dickens, Tale of Two Cities
Wisdom is not something one person can grab and keep for themselves. Trying
to capture and hold on to it makes it immediately slip away.
Wisdom is a process. It asks to be both a student and a teacher. It is a
community effort.
Sometimes I have wisdom to offer, and sometimes you do. It is not a static
relationship with one person on one side and the other person on the other.
Rather it is a dance in which we both play a part.

Soul Contact
Today our lesson is on contact with our own soul. Anything less than that
will leave us in doubt and open to influence to unjust authorities of all
types. Only when we are in soul contact may we know without a shadow of doubt
that our course is the correct one.
It is this very issue that has me at odds with the LDS church. The
authorities of that organization told me that my soul contact was subordinate
to my leaders' and that the leaders knew better than I did what was right or
correct. I refused to acquiesce and let go of my own contact even when I
discovered later that I was contacting other levels than my soul.
I knew that I was on the right track and needed to proceed despite the
pitfalls and mistakes I would inevitably make. I felt the LDS authorities
only had my best interests at heart. They did not want to see me fall or
injure myself in the arduous journey I had set out upon. Seeing others in so
much pain upon this path they thought to save me. Like the cocooned
butterfly, I had to break out, though, strengthen my own wings and learn to
fly.
I had to follow the highest that I knew, to decide my course, to learn by
experience and to grow. There was something so compelling in me, so
unrelenting, that I kept on the path no matter how crazy it seemed to others
or to me. And I have to admit at times it was really crazy. I made mistakes.
I have been in excruciating pain and have thought that this life was more than
I could handle more times than I care to remember.
"Disciples and initiates often do make mistakes, sometimes big ones. One of
the differences between them and ordinary humans is that they move forward
into action at the risk of making mistakes. If one's heart is pure there is no
need to worry. When the mistakes are revealed they will be corrected." (Post
532 in JJ archives)
There was something inside of me, though, that always got through to me in the
darkest of moments and said "You are going in the right direction. Continue
on and the pain will subside and you will feel joy again." There was an inner
knowing beyond all earthly cares that pulled me through until I could walk
again. Sometimes that voice was as unnoticeable as the barest spark in a fire
pit, but somehow it never went completely out. Somehow it managed to flame
again and warm me.
What was interfering with that joyous connection I sometimes had? What was it
I was listening to when I made such embarrassing choices? Perhaps you have
experienced something similar and asked yourself these questions.
First we need to understand what other types of contact are possible. I am
basing these teachings on the works of JJ Dewey and will use his terms with an
occasional Mormonese translation.
Soul contact is our goal. It's way up here. Here we are in our physical body
down here. Included with our physical body is our etheric body (the system of
energy of chakras and energy points). What levels are in between our soul and
our physical body? Any ideas? Mormons talk about a spiritual body. In JJ's
terms there are certain vehicles in use before we reach the level of the
spiritual body. First there is the physical vehicle and that is pretty self
explanatory. Then there is the astral or emotional vehicle. It is a body
that looks very much like the physical body. It is the level that comprises
most near death experiences. They see people they recognize. They visit
places not too unlike things here on earth only better. They can look at
their own astral body or vehicle and recognize it though it, too, is better
than the physical vehicle. Many people that have had a near death experience
claim that anything you desire is available on the astral plane. Those that
desire power, control, hate and so forth are in a gray misty place and those
that desire closeness to family, love and togetherness experience that in a
much brighter, happier place where everything glows with energy.
What do you suppose the level above the astral/emotional level might be?
(Think of your chakras as a hint.) The next level is the mental level. At
this level thoughts are still things and so we are still in a type of physical
or form level.
After the mental level we enter into a realm that is the first one that could
properly be referred to as a spiritual level. Any guesses as to what level
this is called? It is the intuitional level. It is the level where we just
know things and there is no doubt. This is the plane from which flashes of
light or knowledge come in a split second and it takes days to sort out all of
the information.
We've looked at this from an individual point of view, let's look it at from a
world view.
Post 1429
"As I said in the past, civilization has evolved through three states and is
headed toward a fourth.
"(1) Tribal living. This was our first state after evolving into self
conscious entities. This was also our longest sojourn and during this time we
developed our instinctual nature as it works through the etheric body.
Instinct within us was very strong creating an attunement with mother earth as
the brain; consciousness and feeling nature evolved.
"As consciousness evolved, attention shifted to new abilities to insure
survival and some of the instincts dropped below the threshold of
consciousness. As the attention shifted attention from instinct to brain and
feeling the next stage of civilization evolved in order to supply a vehicle
for a more advanced human.
"(2) Kingdom living. As the desire nature grew in strength, and the power of
instinct dropped below the threshold of consciousness, tribes had impetus to
gather together for both protection and the greater fulfillment of their
desires. Civilization at this stage was ruled by a king or dictator, sometimes
good and sometimes evil, but with enough power to blend the various groups
into a single kingdom.
"It is during this kingdom stage that the astral body which governs emotion
and desire is developed, but as it evolves humanity begins to realize that
following the desire nature alone is not the answer and begins to think of
betters ways of life. As he develops the mind humanity moves to:
"(3) Democratic living in its various stages. Humanity develops mind and as it
does, it mentally calculates the deficiencies of the kingdom governments and
create logical rules and laws which will maintain order while at the same time
limiting the power of leaders and giving maximum power to the people in their
state of living and choice of representatives.
"In the civilized portion of the earth most people are either emotionally or
mentally polarized, which is manifest in the existence of kingdom governments
and democracies struggling for domination. Even within both the kingdom and
democratic lands there are subgroups of kingdoms and freedom movements
struggling for the domination of one or the other.
"As democratic systems eventually dominate and freedom becomes secure for the
majority of humanity another vacuum begins to manifest. It is sensed that the
quality of life itself is very important if freedom and prosperity is to be
enjoyed. At this time humanity will begin to seek a higher spiritual living
and move to:
"(4) Cooperative living. In democratic living humanity developed the mind with
its power to plan, reason and create through competition. As man reaches for
his spiritual roots he desires less competition and more cooperation.
Cooperative living will openly acknowledge soul contact by its various names
and a general conscious sense of the oneness of all things will lead to the
"life more abundantly" as prophesied by Christ.
"The keynote of cooperative living will be synthesis. In this system humanity
will raise to polarization above even the mental to the intuitional plane and
incorporate the best of the previous three systems for their use.
"The beginnings of cooperative living are beginning to manifest even now, but
it will be some distance in the future before they begin to dominate.
"So to recap, the journey of humanity goes from tribal living where he
develops the instincts, but does not understand them. He evolves to kingdom
living and expands his consciousness into the astral realm and does not
understand that either. Next he moves to democratic living and develops mind
and begins to understand some things. Finally cooperation leads to a synthesis
of the previous three and a full understanding of their interplay and basic
principles.
"Each of these four categories will be occupied by people of differing states
of evolution, but overall each will attract inhabitants along the lines of its
polarization. For instance tribal living will generally attract people in
instinctual consciousness, kingdom living - astral consciousness [democracy,
mental consciousness and cooperative living will attract those with
intuitional consciousness or soul contact]..."
I would dare to say that we are the pioneers of cooperative living here today.
We are seen as crazy because our level of consciousness is so different than
those around us. The good news is that we are only forerunners. We shall not
be misfits and loners forever.
But even here we are on two very different paths. Some of us are mystics and
some of us are occultists. Occultist here simply means someone interested in
the physical sciences and mystics mean those more inclined to the
psychological sciences. Eventually we must merge our approaches. The mystics
must incorporate the knowledge of the occultists and the occultists must be
guided by the love of the mystics.
So where are you on this path? Are you polarized on the desire level? The
intuitional level? Where we are polarized determines how much soul contact we
have so this evaluation is an important one. If we are not at the intuitional
level are we devoid of soul contact?
JJ gives us a little insight into this in post 1601 as well as some hope.
"The average person who is polarized in the astral body is not overlooked by
the soul, for soul energy is reflected down into that body. Unfortunately it
is a reflection and as such everything is reversed and the direction he
receives leads him into learning experiences rather than in the direction of
real truth."
Remember what I said about the LDS church trying to save us from awful
mistakes? The astral level soul contact does not lead us into truth but into
LEARNING EXPERIENCES. So the LDS church isn't entirely wrong i.e. that we are
making a mistake by following the Spirit. But as JJ explains these
experiences have a purpose.
"These learning experiences are necessary before the seeker can even
appreciate the truth."
"Every once in a while the average person can penetrate the veil of illusion
and receive a non reflected communication from the soul. To accomplish this he
must seek guidance from God with a sincere heart 'as a little child.' When
this happens this person will regard the experience with fondness and remember
it for the rest of his life, but will often be unable to duplicate it again."
So if you are on the path of the occultist or physical scientist the
unrepeatability of the experience will cause you to start to doubt the
communication even though you know deep down it was real.
"The above average person is polarized on the plane of the mind and the
interesting thing is that those who are making the transition from the astral
to the mental often go through a period of several lifetimes of unbelief. They
will usually go through periods of agnosticism and atheism and believe only
that which can be proven with hard core facts. They continue in this direction
until they discover that too many of their questions remain unanswered by the
use of the lower mind only."
"As they seek for more they discover the higher aspect of the mind which is
the door to permanent soul contact. But before they master soul contact they
often think they are receiving information from God when it is from their
subconscious mind. The subconscious mind has access to much data that the
conscious does not have but it is not infallible. In addition to this it does
not have all the reasoning powers that our conscious mind does. Overall the
guidance a person receives from the hidden mind will be more accurate and
useful than that received by the average person from his emotional feeling
self."
"The first objective here is to lift the individual member up to the realm of
the Soul so he can feel its warm radiation and learn to recognize its voice.
Those who have never contacted the Soul will be unaware of the voice of the
Soul and will often make the mistake of believing that their emotional
impressions are from their Soul."
An emotional impression would be one that strokes our ego in some way. Anyone
ever have an experience like this they want to share? They are usually pretty
embarrassing. I would guess 99% of the "I am The One" messages would fall
into this category. I would also guess most of the prayers "Is he/she the
right one for me?" fall into this one, too. Anytime we are infringing upon
another's free will it probably is this type of message.
We already described a lower mental or subconscious contact mistaken for soul
contact.
A higher mental contact opens the door to soul contact. In other words deep
contemplation of a mental concept could put you into the right frame of mind
to receive soul contact. That would be the occultists path. Deep
contemplation of your great love of God could get you there. For me it was
deep gratitude. That is more the mystical path.
How do you know what you have been calling the gift of the holy ghost or soul
contact is the real deal? By your fruits. If you follow the message where
does it take you? Do you discover six months down the road you were not on as
high a road as you thought? You learn by experience. You don't quit
experiencing for fear of making a mistake. You follow the highest you know,
you learn, you evaluate, you follow the highest you know, you learn, you
evaluate.

A Little Prayer
Anonymous
Dear Lord:
Every single evening
As I'm lying here in bed
This tiny little prayer
Keeps running through my head.
God bless my mom and dad,
And other family.
Keep them warm and safe from harm
For they're so close to me.
And God, there is one more thing
I wish that you could do.
Hope you don't mind me asking,
Bless my computer too.
Now I know that it's not normal
To bless a mother board,
But listen just a second
While I explain to you 'My Lord'.
You see, that little metal box
Holds more than odds & ends
Inside those small compartments
Rest so many of my FRIENDS.
I know so much about them
The kindness that they give
And this little scrap of metal
Takes me in to where they live.
By faith is how I know them
Much the same as you
We share in what life brings us
And from that our friendship grew.
Please, take an extra minute
>From your duties up above

Chapter Five
Like the Nephites of Old
The Council of Fifty was to consist of as many as 53 members, and
membership in the Church was not a qualification for being called into the
Council. Joseph Smith had several non-members in it.
What was the purpose of the Council of Fifty? The purpose was to govern the
dominions in the Kingdom of God in all areas of life allowing the
individual maximum use of his agency. The number 53 is a composite of
three other numbers: 49, 3, and 1. The number 49 is created out of seven
sevens, signifying perfection. The Council of Forty-nine is composed of
seven smaller councils which preside over seven different areas of human
endeavor which include, but are not limited to, (1) politics and defense,
(2) philosophy, (3) education, (4) the arts, (5) science (6) religion,
and (7) finance and business. The "three" may or may not be positions held
by the presidency of the Church to preside over spiritual affairs.
The one is a position held by he who holds the keys of the priesthood or
the key to the knowledge of God. This person may or may not be president
of the Church. When the Kingdom is fully established, he generally will
not be; however, Joseph Smith, through necessity, temporarily held both
positions. This person would guide (not dictate to) the whole Kingdom and
set in order the lower councils; yet he, himself, could be reproved by the
councils for every man is subject to error as well as checks and balances.
While it is true that the Lord will not let the Kingdom of God fail, this
is no guarantee for the success of the Church; for God can shift the
Kingdom from people to people according to their worthiness. Each time
there is a shift, the faithful few in the former organization become
leaders in the next. For instance, the twelve apostles of Jesus were the
faithful of the Jews and they became the leaders when the Gospel was given
to the Gentiles. In our day, Joseph warned us that God could pass us by
"and bestow these blessings upon another people." (DHC 5:4271 If the Church
cannot fail, then why did Joseph say this?
Why did the Lord say, "Beware of pride lest ye become as the Nephites of
old"? (D&C 38:39) Are church members becoming as the Nephites of old? Are
they full of pride? What did the Lord mean by this? To find out, let us see
what happened to the Nephites.
The Nephites lived in peace and harmony for over 200 years - something we
have not duplicated. We are told that there was not "any manner of ites;
but they were in one, the children of Christ, and heirs to the Kingdom of
God." (4Nephi 18) Finally, "they had become exceedingly rich, because of
their prosperity in Christ." (v.23) At this time, the people made their
fatal mistake: "There began to be among them those who were lifted up in
pride, such as the wearing of costly apparel, and all manner of fine
pearls, and the fine things of the world. And from that time forth they
did have their goods and their substance no more common among them."
(verses 24-25)
Is the church following in their footsteps? Do the rich among take pride in
having more than his neighbor? Do they not boast of their fine homes and
cars and their jewelry and their cabin in the hills? Do they not feel that
they are more blessed of the Lord because of their righteousness and hard
work, and that if a man is poor, it is because he is lazy, or has not paid
a full tithe, or is lessor than the rich in some way?
Have the Saints not ceased to even experiment with equality in the material
world as the Nephites did? Is this not because members treasure the riches
of this world more than the Kingdom of God? Is the church taking any
effective measures at all to live the United Order today? Nay. The members
shrink from - it and hope that they will not live to see the day when they
will be asked to sacrifice.
They forget that the purpose of the United Order is not to make the rich
poor, but to make all people rich and each man is to be equal in earthly
things that he can also be equal in heavenly things; but the rich in their
pride want to be above the poor, and even many of the poor want to be rich
so they can be above their fellow men.
Today many make excuses for not living the commandments of God by saying
that it is not practical in today's society - that they will not have to
live it until the Prophet commands them to go back to Jackson County.
These are words whispered into members' ears by the Adversary to "lull us
into carnal security" so we will not live the commandments, for the
"tomorrow" when all are supposed to live the commandment never comes to the
unbelievers, whereas it is always "today" for the righteous.
It is indeed true that many early attempts to live the United Order failed.
This was largely due to the "unrighteous dominion" of authority and the
lack of free agency to the members of the orders.
It is obvious that God is not going to come down here and show us all the
details that will make it work. What is needed is experimentation through
free will participation. Then when orders are set up that actually create
more wealth for the individuals as well as the whole, this should then be
pursued.
Instead of doing many things of our own free will to bring to pass much
righteousness the church has been burying its talent in the ground for over
100 years and waiting for some thunderbolt of a revelation before moving
ahead. Alas the wait will be forever unless the church acts upon what it
has already received.
The next thing that happened to the Nephite church was that "they began to
be divided into classes." (v. 26) Some in the church may say that the
doctor and the lawyer are in the same class as the janitor, but if you ask
the janitor you will get a different view.
Next, "they began to build up churches unto themselves to get gain, and
began to deny the true Church of Christ... there were many churches which
professed to know the Christ, and yet they did deny the more parts of His
gospel." (verses 26-27)
The Nephites built up churches "unto themselves." Is this happening among
the LDS today? What does this mean? Basically, it means teaching the
doctrines of men and to drift from the revelations of God to relying on the
wisdom of men or the "arm of flesh." The authorities have put away the
more precious parts of the gospel and now rely on the wisdom of men for
guidance instead of revelation. The principle of revelation has been
dropped from the church. No one has presented a new one for generations.
What does this leave us with? It leaves us with the doctrines of men and a
church built toward the gain of the men involved.
How does one "build up churches unto themselves to get gain?" Does this
mean to use religion to get money? It does, but this is not all. It also
means to build up churches to get gain and praise from the world. When the
world applauds the church for the beautiful buildings and temples and
schools and engraven images, murals and now the Olympics, while at the same
time the cries of the humble in spirit who walk "in low places unnoticed"
ascend up to the Lord of the Sabaoth for spiritual deliverance, then we
have the building up churches unto ourselves to get gain.
In the days of Brigham Young, tithing went into a "Common Fund." If a man
was poor and wanted to start up a business, he could borrow from this fund
and pay it back later when he was successful. Brigham Young planned on
running the entire state of Deseret from the tithing money and he actually
took steps to do away with all taxes so he could run the entire kingdom
from the common fund. Wouldn't it have been wonderful if he could have
succeeded? How would you like to have as your only tax today that of
voluntary tithes and offerings?
However, if the church used more tithing money for the benefit of the
members today, then they would receive less praise from the world, and
besides it would be "inconvenient" for they are in need of large and
spacious buildings and schools and parks, and apartment complexes, and
insurance companies, and orchards, and sugar trusts and motels and on and
on.
Where does all the tithing and donation money go? Not even the press can
find it all out. What salaries do the general authorities receive? The
salaries of our public servants are published; then why not church leaders?
We are told that "it is not given that one man should possess that which is
above another; wherefore the world lieth in sin." (D&C 49:20) Thus, all
their salaries should be the same, yet they are not. As one progresses
higher in position, he receives more pay. This is the practice of the
world, but it should not be in the church.
Can you think of a more comfortable position financially than being an
authority in the Church? You are guaranteed a substantial salary until you
die. No discipline is necessary to pay tithing for it is already taken out
of the paycheck, but not to worry for your income rises far enough above
average so you will not miss it.
How can one without a financial care in the world have sufficient empathy
to help those who are living from paycheck to paycheck?
Alas, the Assyrian (authorities) takes from the innocent and gathers from
"all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the
mouth, or peeped." (Isa. 10:14) As prophesied, the lowly members do not
raise a peep at any move taken by the authorities, just or unjust, for fear
of their eternal soul.
The only one getting any blame in the church is the humble members at the
bottom of the totem pole. But does the Lord blame the lowly member? Nay:
"Therefore, ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord; As I live saith the
Lord God, surely because my flock became a prey, and my flock became meat
to every beast of the field, because there was no shepherd, neither did my
shepherds search my flock, but the shepherds fed themselves, and fed not my
flock; Therefore, 0 ye shepherds, hear the word of the Lord; Thus saith the
Lord God; Behold, I am against the shepherds; and I will require my flock
at their hand, and cause them to cease from feeding the flock; neither
shall the shepherds feed themselves any more; for I will deliver my flock
from their mouth, that they may not be meat for them". (Ezek 34:7-10)
This scripture applies to the shepherds today as much as any period in
history except they repent. Why, 0 why, do people in every age think that
they are somehow different from the past and that this time round they can
trust their souls to the integrity of their leaders rather than in the
hands of God himself through his Spirit?
"The more things change the more they remain the same" comes to mind.
