Thank you David Leighton for your report on the Peacewalk from
Assisi to Rome and your progress in spreading the word for success
of the Bethlehem to Jerusalem Interfaith Peace Prayer Pilgrimage
this Christmas 25Dec05.
During your walk with the Beloved Community group led by
James Twyman to see His Holiness Pope Benedict today or
soon, we were able to get word through emails to the network
of His Holiness Dalai Lama with the help of Hopi Dee See Mana
(Katherine Cheshire) who after a too recent hip surgery made
a detour to Tucson on her way moving from California to New
Mexico and spent a few days in Tucson while the Dalai Lama
was giving his three days teachings and public interfaith forum
discussion on 19Sep05. The newspaper article reporting on
his message is below, appropriate for themes of mutual interest.
There are several days of posts related and including information
on the Hopi Declaration of Peace, the new science information
regarding advanced energy technologies to replace nuclear
and fossil fuel power, and the history of the peacewalks in
America over last decade inspired by Buddhist Monks such
as HH Dalai Lama, the most venerable Nichidatsu Fujii, and
other global spiritual teachers such as Sri Sathya Sai Baba,

I'm glad to be back in email contact with you and happy
at the coincidence of HH Dalai Lama's US visit throughout
this month and then first week of November at Stanford
University in SF Bay area of California and then Washington
DC for several days conferences on scientific basis of
meditation.

20Sep05 - "to build a calm heart"
- Dalai Lama delights Tucson crowd
with trademark folksy manner -
"to create a century of love"
In a wide-ranging talk on creating global peace,
the Nobel Peace Prize-winner urged listeners
to start by finding harmony within themselves.
"It is very important to build a calm heart,"
said Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama's given name.
"Genuine peace, in the world, in the community
or in the family, ultimately depends on individual
mental peace," said the leader of millions of
Tibetan Buddhists worldwide.
The Dalai Lama spoke of religion as a potential
uniting force rather than a dividing one, and said
world peace will become possible as more people
learn to recognize and admire the common threads
in all faiths.
"All religions are essentially the same, teaching love,
compassion, tolerance and forgiveness," he said.
He challenged today's young people
to "create a century of love."

Buddhist leader delivers straight talk on peace
By Carol Ann Alaimo

The Dalai Lama is not a stodgy man, and neither are his admirers, judging
from the crowd that greeted the famed spiritual leader in Downtown Tucson on
Monday.
Some wore glitter, feathers or flowing robes. Others lighted incense and
struck yoga poses on the lawn of the Tucson Convention Center.
About 7,500 fans, from Tucson and elsewhere, converged on the city center to
see the 70-year-old Buddhist monk in his only appearance before the general
public during his four-day stay.
"This calls for a celebration," said Marta Macbeth, 50, of Santa Fe, N.M.,
who twined lime-green parrot feathers into her waist-long silver hair for
the event. "I just get really happy when His Holiness is around."
Erin Midkiff, 17, a senior at Tucson High Magnet School, donned a black
T-shirt featuring stars, planets and gold glitter.
"This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," said Midkiff, one of hundreds
of
students who got free tickets. "I've always been really interested in
Buddhism, and it's pretty amazing to see the top leader."
As crowds lined up outside, vendors hawked Dalai Lama calendars, banners and
Buddhist prayer beads. A handful of Christian protesters held up signs
declaring that His Holiness is a sinner who needs Jesus.
Inside, the man at the center of the hubbub took the stage to wild applause
as he displayed the folksy manner that has become his trademark.
"Firstly, let me sit properly here," the Dalai Lama began, bending over
to
untie his brown shoes and slipping them off to reveal a pair of bright red
socks.
In a wide-ranging talk on creating global peace, the Nobel Peace
Prize-winner urged listeners to start by finding harmony within themselves.
"It is very important to build a calm heart," said Tenzin Gyatso, the
Dalai
Lama's given name.
In the same way a strong immune system repels disease, inner balance makes
it possible to act from reason rather than emotion, he said.
"Genuine peace, in the world, in the community or in the family, ultimately
depends on individual mental peace," said the leader of millions of Tibetan
Buddhists worldwide.
He is also the leader in exile of Tibet, which has been under Chinese
occupation since 1950. He won the Nobel Prize in 1989 for his efforts to
find a peaceful end to the occupation.
The Dalai Lama spoke of religion as a potential uniting force rather than a
dividing one, and said world peace will become possible as more people learn
to recognize and admire the common threads in all faiths.
"All religions are essentially the same, teaching love, compassion,
tolerance and forgiveness," he said.
Speaking to the students in the audience, he said his generation "created
the mess" that led to a century of war in the 1900s.
He challenged today's young people to "create a century of love."
During a question-and-answer session with the audience, His Holiness
repeatedly drew laughter for his guileless answers.
When asked for his thoughts on the best way to raise a child, he replied, "I
don't know." He then mulled it over a moment and said love and affection
were probably good ideas.
The teachings resonated with Diana and Greg Williams of Tucson, who brought
their 6-month-old daughter, Terahnia, to the event.
"I like his philosophy about the balance in life," said Diana Williams,
36.
"Things are kind of crazy in today's world. He helps you keep things in
perspective," added Greg Williams, also 36.
Monday marked the end of the Dalai Lama's trip to Tucson, part of a two-week
tour that has taken him from Alaska to Idaho. He will now go on to Texas,
New York and New Jersey.

THE HOPI DECLARATION OF PEACE
It is in the Power of the True Hopi People to unify the minds
and spirits of all true peace seeking peoples of the earth...
"Hopi" means "Peaceful People"... and the truest and
greatest power is the strength of Peace...because
Peace is the Will Of The Great Spirit...
But do not think that just because the True Hopi People
have been told by the Great Spirit never to take up arms...
that the True Hopi People will not fight...
even die for what we know to be the right way of Life.
The True Hopi People Know how to fight without killing or hurting...
The True Hopi People Know how to fight with Truth and
Positive Force In The Light Of The Great Spirit...
The True Hopi People Know how to Educate by clear thoughts...
good pictures... and by carefully chosen words...
The True Hopi People Know how to show to all the world's
Children the True Way of Life by setting an example...
by working and communicating in a way that reaches
the minds and hearts of all people who are truly seeking
the methods of a simple and spiritual Life which is
the only Life that will survive...
THE TRUE HOPI PEOPLE PRESERVE THE SACRED
KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE WAY OF THE EARTH
BECAUSE THE TRUE HOPI PEOPLE KNOW THAT
THE EARTH IS A LIVING... GROWING PERSON...
AND ALL THINGS ON IT ARE HER CHILDREN...
The True Hopi People Know how to show the Right Way of Life
to all the world's people who have ears to listen...
who have eyes to see...
and who have hearts to understand these things...
The True Hopi People Know how to generate enough Power
to link up the forces of the Minds and Spirits of all the
True Children of the Earth ... and to Unify them with the
Positive Force of the Great Spirit so that they may
put an end to affliction and persecution in all afflicted places in this
world...
THE TRUE HOPI PEOPLE DECLARE THAT HOPI POWER
BE A FORCE WHICH WILL BRING ABOUT WORLD CHANGE.
-----end Hopi Declaration of Peace from

"Internal peace is an essential first step to achieving peace in the world.
How do you cultivate it? It's very simple. In the first place by
realizing clearly that all mankind is one, that human beings in
every country are members of one and the same family."

Subject: RE: see him at URI Conference Amman Jordan 26-29Sep05 I have
mentioned
to you, a "United Religions Initiative - Middle East and North Africa".
This is combined with the highly impressive Israeli Interfaith Organisation
of Yehuda
Stolov.
Dear Californian David, Glad to be in Internet contact again after my walk
with the James Twyman Group. It was clear to all that the SPIRIT of Saint
Francis of Assisi is currently very much alive.
I am due to fly from here to Amman for the above Conference, the 26th to
29th Next.
I am herewith passing your information on to the mighty totally peaceful
warrior Ibrahim El Hawa about the Islamic Centre South California, in Los
Angeles.
Also I am sure that Eliyahu Mclean, e-mail above should know about that
other peaceful Warrior, Chief Jake Swamp I believe from your e-mail,
www.treeofpeacesociety.org who would be a perfect support for the next
SULHA Meeting in Israel which may alas not be until about July 2006. Jake
would be a twin for a Zulu, South African tribesman who regularly attends
such meetings.
My particular greetings to co-workers Ibrahim and Eliyahu and I hope to see
them at Yehuda Stolov's above meeting on CHARITY in Amman.
I would gladly join a cyndicate to help assist such as Jake to attend
European meetings.
It seems James Twyman, he tells me he will be elsewhere than
Bethlehem/Jerusalem next Christmas particularly the 25th of December next
but I have during the above walk told many fellow walkers about our plans.
Those further dates, Easter 2006 and also the 15th August 2006 sound good as
further dates for such activity.
Here in Rome I made new contact with friends, one of whom participated in a
Work Camp (it was very hard going to get to grips with this need)
particularly in Jenin and Nablus - and she was also during August in
Ramallah as well as Bethlehem and Jerusalem. It is clear that she, Sciadia
Ghazal, we pronounce her name Shadia, finds a deteriorating situation there
which is clear from impressions of others. So even the firm resolve to
survive of Palestinians particularly in Jenin, Nablus is becoming tried
beyond the limits.
I think it would be particularly useful if Sciadia would correspond DIRECTLY
with you about this.
In my conversations with many from the USA, Canada, European UK, Germany
etc. on the Assisi Peace Walk, there is abysmally little knowledge there
about the seriously deteriorating situation in the Holy Land.
Thats all for now,
David of Wadi Rum.
